US: North Carolina Has Fourth Shark Attack in Two Weeks - http://clapway.com/2015/06/25/us-north-carolina-has-fourth-shark-attack-in-two-weeks987/

Latest Victim a Young Boy

On Wednesday, an 8 year old boy in Surf City, North Carolina was swimming in the ocean when a shark attacked him. He was swimming in only knee-deep water when it occurred. Despite the scare of a shark attack, the boy’s injuries were fairly minor and localized to the ankle, heel, and lower leg. These wounds were treated at the scene, though the parents took him to the emergency room to have them cleaned immediately after. All in all, the family was supremely lucky considering the dangers of a shark bite.

If only others were so lucky. North Carolina is going through a particularly rough streak regarding these types of incidents; this was the fourth shark attack this month in a state that rarely deals with such a problem. Two of them even occurred within 90 minutes of one another on June 14th, both in the Oak Island area within two miles of each other. A teen girl, 13, and teen boy, 16, were each attacked by sharks. Thankfully they survived, but sadly were not as lucky as the boy on Wednesday; she had to have her left arm amputated below the elbow, and he had his left arm amputated below the shoulder. The first shark attack of the month, meanwhile, was also to a 13 year old girl who was treated for small cuts as a result. All were in relatively shallow waters.

No Official Warning Given

No Official Warning Given

Larry Bergman, the town manager of Surf City, has no intentions of giving a warning to the citizens about not going in the water after the shark attack concern. North Carolina in the past ten years has only seen 25 shark attacks, and none of them resulted in fatalities. The town has, however, increased police patrols of the beach, which is significant; Surf City does not have official lifeguards. Instead, they have police patrolling the beach, as well as firefighters trained in water rescue. Still, when an abnormally large number of shark attacks are occurring, it’s probably best to be cautious for at least a little while, warning or no warning.
