NBA star Steph Curry created a social media app. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/11/steph-curry-from-the-nba-to-silicon-valley-232/

Basketball star Steph Curry is developing a social media app, to encourage more authentic interactions between celebrities and fans. The Warriors guard and MPV rose to fame after winning the NBA Finals over the Cavaliers, but the 27-year-old player’s interest in the tech-industry is no news.

Curry is already a partner of CoachUp, an app that helps parents find private sports coaches for their children. Yet, in a recent interview with BuzzFeed, Curry said he’s planning to take his social media interest one step further, by bridging the gap between fans, athletes and movie stars.

Steph Curry thinks about fans, not about himself

Curry told BuzzFeed that he puts himself in a “fan’s perspective”.

The app, which is set to be launched within the next six months, will be similar to Shots, the selfie-sharing app. This one in particular is interesting because it doesn’t have a public comment feature over concerns about cyber-bullying and does not post follower counts.

What having a social media footprint really means

Having a social media footprint has become a priority for people around the globe. In a click – or several clicks- of a button, social media has changed the way people interact. Celebrities’ accounts are definitely a niche market, which hasn’t been fully explored by developers yet.

Two-ways or one-way communication with celebrities?

Many celebrities take to Twitter or Instagram to promote their latest work or appearances. Fortunately there’s a few who use the platform to trigger change or, in Steph Curry’s case, to create real connections.

In this year’s Shorty Award’s a team of luminaries from advertising, media, entertainment and the internet, picked a series of celebrities – from actor Chris Pratt to Conan OBrien- as top individuals for producing great content on “the social web”.

Although social medial has often been hailed as a great ways for fans to interact with celebrities, truth is that it’s often a marketing tool for self-promotion rather than something nobler. Steph Curry’s initiative could become part of something much more gratifying than the simple one-way relationship that many celebrities’ establish with their fans.

What if using various platforms, celebrities, athletes or politicians, could truly share causes their rally behind, interact with their fans and unveil things they truly believe in? That could be the rule, not the exception.

Now, is Steph Curry’s app the answer? Wait and see.
