Smartening up about smoking tobacco. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/08/u-s-says-yes-to-health-and-no-to-smoking-223/

According to a recent study, most Americans agree with implementing a new law that would raise the age limit to legally purchase tobacco products.

SMOKING IS NOT COOL ANYMORE

Smoking used to be the best way for “cool kids” to show off and raise above “the rest of people”, but this dangerous habit has lost an impressive part of its popularity during the years.

The great news is that more and more adults realized smoking was an impediment to their healthy lifestyle and the fact that they jog every morning is not killing the nicotine in their system. Therefore, more and more people are struggling with tobacco addiction, trying to put and end to this bad routine.

WINNING THE BATTLE BETWEEN HEALTH AND SMOKING

Even if adults might manage quitting smoking without any help, the younger generation should be offered extra help. This is why, in order to protect their health, cities and countries in the United States became part of a laborious process, making an effort to raise the minimum age for buying tobacco products, to 21.

The recent survey conducted on more than 4000 smokers and non-smokers over the age of 18, showed that almost 50% of them are highly in favor of raising the present age limit from 18 to 21.

Hawaii is the first stated that dared to set its legal smoking age at 21. The new law doesn’t only apply to tobacco, but it also includes electronic cigarettes and it goes into effect on January 1.

In addition, Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey and Utah changed their minimum age to 19.

If more stated support raising the minimum age for buying cigarettes, the first tobacco experimentation would be delayed, reducing the chance of the young generation to become regular users.

This measure is only one of the many actions that are taken when it comes to improving people’s lifestyle and helping them quit cigarettes.

Increasing tobacco taxes is another effective measure of tobacco control. This is actually a win-win approach, since it monitors people’s health and simultaneously, increases governmental income. However, this measure is quite tricky. Governments must tax all tobacco products, trying to stop people from opting out of one expensive product, in favor to a cheaper one.
