The northern lights are predicted to dim for the next decade, making it much harder to see them on a clear, starry night up North.


Don’t worry, they are not disappearing. They’re just muting their vivid glory for a decade, kind of like Adele taking a four year break from the music industry. Except for ten years instead of four. It’s okay, we’ll survive… I hope.


According to Peter Delamere, associate professor of space physics at the Geophysical Institute, the northern lights are beginning their downward leg of a natural 11-year solar cycle. Solar activity, including enormous solar eruptions, can happen anytime and produce intense aurora, but they are unpredictable and irregular.


Aurora borealis, the phenomenon otherwise known as the northern lights, will begin to dim after 2016. The effect is estimated to last until 2024 or even 2026. During that time, the lights will be less frequent and bright. Currently, the lights are a bit like a groundhog in February–not quite sure whether it should pop its head out or not. Conditions required to see the lights include a clear night sky and the lights’ willingness to show up.


Thankfully, the northern lights will still be putting on a spectacular show through Winter 2016, so start planning your trip now.

Alaska


A great choice for North American dwellers. There are many options to get yourself to Alaska in the next year: cruise, fly, or drive. Fairbanks is the suggested destination to get the best show and not freeze.

Another option that’s close to home. In the city of Churchill, Natural Habitat Adventures offers an aurora pod made of glass and a view of the lights waving over polar bears and lots of ice. While you’re in Northern Canada, check out dog-sledding and any kind of skiing you can dream up.

One of my personal favorite countries in the world. In the summer, Scotland’s so far north, the sun doesn’t set till close to midnight. In the winter, the darkness is all encompassing. Head toward Inverness or the Coast of Caithness.


Norway


Beautiful in summer and winter, Norway offers great views of the northern lights. You can go so far North here that you can also experience the Polar Night–a 24 hour-long night.


Finland


The most infamous place too view the lights because of its fantastically luxurious accommodations–personal igloos. Sit under fur blankets and view the beautiful phenomenon from the comfort of a very warm bed.


Iceland


Head over to Iceland, not only to see the northern lights, but also to explore the seat of the North from the hit HBO show Game of Thrones. Now, if I can find Jon Snow out there, I’ll be set for life.

Landing in Anchorage on August 31, 2015, Barack Obama became the first sitting president in 15 years to make a formal visit to Alaska. He will also become the first president to visit Arctic Alaska, flying to the Inuit village of Kotzebue, which is being overtaken by ice melt and soil erosion. And he is arguably the first president ever to visit this Alaska, a hotter, wetter, and faster-changing Alaska than the world has ever known, whose melting glaciers, crumbling permafrost, rising seas, and eroding shores are threatening Alaskans’ livelihoods.


Far from a damper on his visit, the impacts of climate change are the central purpose of Obama’s trip to The Last Frontier: as a jarring visual capstone to his month devoted to climate change, and as an out-of-the-way layover to a United Nations climate summit in Paris.


(He also officially restored North America’s highest mountain, Mt. McKinley, to its original Native American name—Denali.)


You Know Obama Means Business When He Rolls Out WhiteHouse.Gov/Climate-Change


In early August, the Obama Administration proposed a new plan of action to combat climate change: the Clean Power Plan. It’s even got its own website with cool infographics and videos! Proving that he did his homework, Obama discusses how power plants generate far more carbon than any other source in the U.S., and—you wouldn’t believe it!—the federal government has never placed any limits on power plant carbon emissions, until now.


So is this a really big deal, or a meaningless gesture? Is this the grand finale of a presidency of environmental protection, or an apology note scrawled to Planet Earth after two terms of exploitation and neglect? Let’s explore.


Obama’s Climate Change Policy Has Been Under Fire Since Day One


Throughout his two terms, Obama has never been the darling of environmental activists. His tenure witnessed the extreme expansion of natural gas fracking and offshore drilling around the country; major trade growth and deregulation with countries with bad environmental records, particularly in Asia; and environmental disasters like the BP oil spill and the recent Animas River catastrophe.


In fact, just two weeks before landing in Alaska, Obama approved Shell to drill in the Arctic Ocean, despite the objections of environmentalists and coastal Alaskan communities. Environmental groups are greeting his visit with protests, condemnations of his “self-defeating hypocrisy,” and a campaign to end Arctic drilling (an industry that inconveniently brings many jobs to the state).


Activists highlighting the stains on Obama’s environmental record have every right and responsibility to do so, but they distract people from a somewhat brighter truth. Obama’s climate change policy has certainly not been flawless, but few presidents have paid more attention to the environment than Obama. Obama’s climate change policies have just been more severely scrutinized than any other president’s, giving him an inflated negative reputation.


Condemning Obama’s Climate Change Record is Ahistorical and Unfair


Environmentalists’ standards are stricter than they have ever been before—rightfully so, because our climate’s fate has never been so dire. Obama’s climate change agenda became their focal point not because his policies are so deplorable, but because they are more flexible and receptive than those of any other president.


In other words, environmentalists complain about Obama because they believe that he might actually do something about it. And they should keep complaining, because it works. But to call Obama’s climate change record terrible negates the same hope and expectation that drives environmentalists to complain to Obama in the first place.


Being U.S. President Is Like Driving a Hummer That Gets 1 Mile Per 80 Trillion Gallons of Gas


In 2009, Obama stepped into the driver’s seat of the most wasteful, energy inefficient country in the world—stuck in its deepest trench in decades. If he hadn’t laid on the gas to get us out of the trench, then millions of Americans would still be unemployed, we’d be wasting trillions of dollars to import oil and autos, and he would have lost his 2012 reelection to a climate change denier.


Undeniably, mistakes were made. But when other presidents may have just pushed forward Business As Usual to escape the Recession, Obama saw it as an opportunity to take large-scale baby-steps towards environmental sustainability: he bailed out the automakers while pressuring them to guzzle less gas. He expanded the energy sector, not in cheap and easy coal, but in natural gas, which burns much cleaner than other fossil fuels. He created jobs in wind and solar power, and in recent years, he has rolled out a series of regulations to limit carbon emissions in major industries and the energy sector.


His latest climate action, the Clean Power Plan, outdoes his prior actions in scale and ambition. It is wowing crowds in Alaska, though, environmentalists are still throwing nervous glances towards the encroaching oilrigs off shore.


In Paris, where Obama will be addressing other climate-conscious heads of state who relate to the impossible balancing act of running a country, he is betting on a standing ovation.


Obama’s End-Of-Term Swagger in Alaska: Is Clean Power Plan Just a Cheap Legacy Stunt?


In several ways, Obama is just taking advantage of an easy opportunity to solidify his legacy as a climate president.


The first way is that he is facing an open playing field. What other U.S. President can be considered a champion of climate change? Sometimes we revere Teddy Roosevelt as an environmentalist for founding the National Park system, but this is also the guy who took trips to Africa to shoot a bunch of lions and rhinos. One of the strongest environmental presidents was actually Richard Nixon, but he’s not exactly one for positive legacies. The George W. Bush years and even the Clinton years are starting to be condemned by history as a period of irresponsible growth.

With few presidents to compete with, Obama’s climate change policy has the opportunity to make history. By simply suggesting an ambitious, long-term climate policy that Obama will have very limited capacity to enact and see through, Obama’s name and legacy will forever paired with the carbon-reducing policies that environmentalists have spent decades fighting for.


Obama is very aware of this. With one foot out the door, he has gone from playing with politics to playing with history.


You could call him selfish, You could say he’s more focused on words on a (web)page than real results. You could call the Clean Power Plan too little too late. But this much is undeniable: Obama has set a presidential precedent for environmental action, for looking at the status quo and saying, “This is unsustainable.”


Obama turned the world’s eyes to Alaska, where the impact of climate change is visible in every drop of water, and legitimized contemporary climate science more than ever before.

Due to the side effects of climate change, the livelihoods of thousands of walruses are currently being threatened. Rapidly melting sea ice is forcing these animals to take refuge on a remote barrier island in Alaska, according to EcoWatch.


CLIMATE CHANGE THREATENING THE WALRUSES


Unfortunately, this isn’t a rare occurrence. In fact, EcoWatch reports that the Arctic could be entirely “ice-free” in summer months by the 2030s, leaving walruses with no other option than to take refuge on shore. Local indigenous communities that thrive around the presence of this ice will also be largely affected by the unforeseeable consequences.


This year, the first sighting of  a walrus “haut out” – as the event is referred to as – was reported by Gary Braasch, an environmental photographer, who spotted the walruses about two miles from the hamlet of Point Lay on August 23rd. In lieu of the event, President Obama is planning to visit the Alaskan Arctic on a three-day tour this coming Monday, on August 31st, according to The Guardian. In doing so, he hopes to draw much needed attention to the growing effects of climate change.


THIS ISN’T THE FIRST TIME


Last year, roughly 40,000 animals, mostly comprised of females and their babies, faced the same fate; such haul outs are concerning since they can expose the walrus population to a number of external risks. For example, because the animals are easily scared by unfamiliar sounds or objects, stampedes have become a major problem.


Although it is common for Pacific walruses to utilize coastal haulouts during the fall southward migration, females and their young prefer to rest on the ice before migrating back to the Bering Sea. The limited space on the barrier island, however, resulted in the death of 60 young walruses last year.


“Walruses often flee haulouts in response to the sight, sound, or odor of humans or machines. Walruses are particularly sensitive to changes in engine noise and are more likely to stampede off beaches when planes turn or fly low overhead,” stated Andrea Medeiros, a spokeswoman for the fish and wildlife service.

Climate Change Is Forcing Walruses On Land

Thirty dead whales were found washed ashore along Alaska’s southern coast. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) started investigating the case, looking for answers.


AN “UNUSUAL MORTALITY EVENT”


The federal government released an announcement on Thursday calling the matter an “unusual mortality event,” which is defined by the Marine Mammal Protection Act as animals that are stranded in an unexpected manner with the significant die-off of any marine mammal population that demands immediate response and action.

The first mysterious whale death in Alaska was observed in May this year and, in total, 11 fin whales, 14 humpback whales, 1 lone grey whale and 4 other unidentified have been discovered in the last four months. The dead bodies have been washing up in along Western Alaska’s shores, such as Agognak Island, Kodial Island, the Semidi Islands and the Chirikof Island and scientists have already launched investigations in the areas of interest to uncover the mystery.


WHAT CAUSED THE WHALES’ DEATH?


While Julie Speegle from NOAA told The Guardian that their theory is that the harmful algal bloom has led the whales to their deaths, Teri Rowles says that the only one sample that has been taken from one of the whales revealed that that it was negative for domoic acid. Domoic acid is a toxin produced by algae, but since the samples are already beyond decomposition, the results may not be as definitive.


Rowles, who is the coordinator of the Fisheries Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response program, notes that the exact cause of the deaths will be determined after we obtain helpful data about the total state of the whales’ health and the environment they belong to.

In addition, another factor causing delay is the location itself. Bree Witteveen, a marine mammal specialist and lead investigator, says that acquiring samples from the dead whales is quite challenging due to Alaska’s massive, uninhabited and inaccessible coastline.


WHEN WILL WE GET SOME ANSWERS?


The investigation could take months or even years and the results may not lead to a conclusion. However, researchers are collecting water samples to search for any harmful substance or possible changes in water temperature, and they have been studying at least one species of seabird.

The common mure has also been reported suffering a die-off in June, “in unusual numbers” and with “many appearing weak” in Alaska, and scientists do not know yet whether the bird deaths were related to the deaths of the whales.

Ecologists believe that Alaska’s wildfires are not hazardous to Alaska’s ecosystem, but may pose an even larger, more global effect on climate change as carbon is released into the atmosphere from the permafrost.


Fish Creek Fire in Alaska Underground But Not Gone


Though the flames from the Fish Creek Fire in Alaska have faded away to streams of billowing smoke, ecologists believe that the wildfire, which has seen moved underground, may have a devastating effect on climate change.


As the wildfire continues to burn underground, the heat will lick away at the permafrost, releasing carbon from dead organic material that has been frozen for years. It’s a simple, but terrifying chain of events that may contribute to global warming.


What’s more is the Fish Creek Fire is not the only wildfire threatening the permafrost. Alaska wildfires have consumed nearly 5 million acres after a lightning storm in June sparked around 300 fires.

An Undying Fire Thanks to the Ice: How Permafrost Affects Wildfires


The amazing part about Alaskan wildfires is the very thing that makes them so harmful, which is the fact that they don’t die out when the flames stop above the ground. Instead, the fires have a large resource of dried, dead organic material waiting underground to be burned away.


Called duff, the organic material is composed of leaves, grass, pine needles, and even trees. The duff falls onto the forest floor, accumulating over time to pile rather high in some places. Thanks to Alaska’s glacial temperatures, the duff never completely decomposes as it would if it had been in a warmer state.


Instead, it rests on a ground layer called permafrost, insulating the permanently frozen ground from the warm outside temperatures. But, as the blazes burn the duff, the permafrost has less insulating material, making it more vulnerable to the hotter temperatures.


Ecologists believe this is even more problematic because the permafrost is already unstable due to a leap of 3 degrees Fahrenheit over the last half century.


The Wildfires Will Release Carbon and Affect Climate Change


Though Alaska and other places in the subarctic have seen their fair share of fires, this fire season has started off with over 11 million acres burned away between fires in Alaska and Canada. The intensity, frequency, and duration of the fires has been severe this year. Ecologists and climatologists have warned that the permafrost may release the carbon that is has trapped for thousands of years, creating a massive climate change.


Some scientists say that the ecosystem may be able to compensate for this extra carbon as new plant life absorbs it. However, others believe this is a sure sign of additional climate change that will go beyond any effect of human emissions.


Both theories are valid, but for now, neither can be conclusively proved. One thing ecologists can agree on is that Alaska’s wildfires are already affecting the ecosystem in Alaska, even if the effects to climate change have not been seen.

Since much about the early phase of the world is still much unknown, or at least mysterious, many are drawn to that particular era. Who wouldn’t be, what with the exotic sea creatures and land creatures that lived in those times and would eventually become extinct or evolve to the animals of today?

There are thousands of museums across the world featuring exhibits of these ancient creatures. One of those exhibits is in the University of Alaska’s Museum of the North’s Dinosaur exhibit.


With this exhibit already up, it is appropriate that one of the museum’s own, the curator of the Earth Sciences, helped identify a fossil in the mountains that would become Alaska’s first elasmosaur fossil. That person is Dr. Pat Druckenmiller, a vertebrate paleontologist, who also helped in providing things for the dinosaur exhibit, i.e. he helped to excavate some of the fossils.

The fossil discovered was of an Elasmosaurus, a sea creature from the same family as the plesiosaur. The news of the find was announced by the University of Alaska in a press release, on the 22nd of this month.


The fossil was found in the Talkeetna Mountain area by a several people, one of which included Anchorage based fossil collector, Curvin Metzler. After the initial find, Dr. Druckenmiller was contacted and invited to area in order to examine the fossil, which he then identified as what it was. The piece he examined was sticking out of the 60 foot cliff, and he found it was part of the neck area. So further excavation went underway to see what else could be recovered. From what was uncovered, the length of Alaska’s first elasmosaur was estimated to be about twenty-five feet long. But there is still more to uncover as of yet.

By finding Alaska’s first elasmosaur, more studies can be done about the creature and tell us more about life in those olden days in the Alaskan region. As of yet, three of these types of sea creatures have been found in Alaska, and the elasmosaur is just one of those in the family tree.

A University of Utah study is busy studying Chinook salmon from the Nushagak River in Alaska. Researchers are removing their ear bones that were tagged for tracking to find out more about these fish and where they live and travel. Particular isotopes were placed on the fish as a tracking device. Different isotopes are found in different regions, so the distinct isotope ratios in the layers of the fish bones can show where they were during varying times in their lives, the researchers say.


The special tags have been used on 255 fish and work to trace the fish, starting from the rivers, where they were born to the oceans, where they mature and live for a number of years before going back to their birthplace to spawn, and die.


Salmon Tagged for Tracking Help Researchers Learn More About Them


The tracking device uses strontium isotope ratios to trace the Chinook salmon. This specific element, along with its isotopes is extremely connected to geography, so it works well as a marker, according to study researchers. This is especially true since the geology of Alaska is very diverse with rocks that are categorically different from each other.

They follow the chemical signature that comes from the isotopes on the fish tagged for tracking. Depending on where the fish travel, there are differing amounts of and types of these isotopes that appear in the different areas the chinook salmon live and swim in during their lives.


Data Will Help Study Salmon Numbers, Productivity


The scientists want to see how the salmons’ life and travel in their freshwater stage might affect their seawater stage. All this information will help determine more about salmon productivity and how many fish there are now. The Chinook salmon were all caught and tagged in 2011. The study resulting from this data appears in full in an article in the Science Advances journal. Christian Zimmerman from the US Geological Survey stated that the study is in response to societal issues and the need to learn more about these fish and their habits.
