The Mountain View Police Department pulled over one of a Google car for driving too slowly on the roads of the Californian town. According to the MVPD, they were tipped off to the Google car because traffic was beginning to build up about 2.3 miles from Google’s headquarters.

The Car Was Was Too Slow

They confirmed the Google car was driving 24mph on a 35mph road. According to the statement, the officer approached the car after stopping it and made contact with the operators to learn more about how the Google car chooses its speeds. It turns out the Google car operates only on roadways with speed limits at or under 35mph, and the road it was transversing, El Camino Real, is rated at 35mph.

Google Meets With Police Regularly

Since Google Headquarters is under the Mountain View Police Department jurisdiction, they have frequent meetings to ensure that the Google car operates safely around the community. This feeds recent buzz about Google cars being almost too safe, too careful to operate in real roads. The car has its maximum speed capped at 25mph, but hopefully this will evolve as the technology evolves.

Google commented on this in a blog post of their own, stating that the excitement of the Google car brings out curiosity in a lot of people. They state proudly that the Google car has carried out 1.2 million miles of autonomous driving, and they’ve never been ticketed.

The Google self driving car project is going really well, but some say it’s a bit too cautious. Google has expressed that the Google self-driving car should be ready to break immediately and efficiently in the presence or vicinity of children. Throughout this past Halloween, Google asked a few kids to volunteer to be studied by the smart car, so that the vehicle will know when to stop. Google wants their cars to know exactly how unpredictable children’s movements are, and how to work around them so they never get hurt.

The only accidents that the Google self driving car has been involved with have been at the hands and fault of human drivers unfortunate enough to find themselves in that situation, and Google is making sure that it will be the only instance when passengers may face danger. This shows just how far the project has gone, and also that Google’s inventions learn not by code input, but by experience.

The project will head in exciting directions for the future, and with this step the company will be held less liable for accidents in the future. It’s in everyone’s best interest that Google takes these kinds of measures and makes the Google self driving car experience and solve problems like these first hand.

Three Google Employees Suffered Minor Injuries in Accident

Self-driving cars are no longer a thing for the distant future. Google has been hard at work perfecting it as an art, but with that work comes concerns about how a Google self-driving car can work. These cars have been involved in accidents in the past when being tested out as prototypes, and this month it happened again. Google has recently made a blog post about a July 1st incident in Mountain View, CA. The Google self-driving car was stopped at a red light relatively close to the Google headquarters, when another vehicle rear-ended the prototype, a Lexus RX450h that had been equipped with special Google sensors and software. The three employees in the car were briefly hospitalized as a precaution for suffering minor whiplash, making this the first accident with a Google self-driving car where injuries were sustained.

Google Cars Have Had Several Accidents, But Not Been At Fault

With the Google self-driving car having been tested since 2009, accidents are no surprise. And considering that timespan, Google’s record with it seems less spotty – 14 accidents over a span of 6 years and one million test miles. Of these 14 accidents, the Google self-driving car has never actually been found at fault for any of the collisions. In fact, 11 of the 14 collisions fit the description of the most recent accident – a motorist rear-ending a Google self-driving car. It turns out the scariest part of being in a Google self-driving car are the other drivers on the road getting distracted!

Other Safety Concerns Are What’s Plaguing the Google Self-Driving Car

Google has said that by 2020, the technology for manufacturers to build self-driving cars will be more readily available. Hopefully that gives Google enough time to work out the kinks of their car, because even though it hasn’t been responsible for accidents, there are still a lot of steps before the Google self-driving car has been perfected as an option for all drivers. It still has difficulty navigating large and complicated parking lots, and has some problems with snow and rain. There are also issues with how the Google self-driving car can deal with unpredictable obstacles in the road. It’s not in the distant future anymore, but we still have a ways to go before Google self-driving cars are a mainstay on the road.

You hail a cab, and step out to the curb. Climbing over the cloth interior, and buckling your seatbelt, you notice something unusual about this particular cab: There is no driver, or no human driver that is. A recent study has shown that autonomous taxi cabs could replace our personal vehicles by 2030 reducing greenhouse emissions by as high as 90% as well as many other benefits to come with the end of manually driven cars. So begins with the rise of the autonomous taxi.

Reducing greenhouse emissions by giving up the driver’s seat

Autonomous taxis could slow global warming and climate change, by reducing the CO2 emissions on the planet. According to Berkley study published today by Berkeley scientists Jeffery Greenblatt and Samveg Saxena, “… if five percent of 2030 vehicle sales (about 800,000 vehicles) were shifted to autonomous taxis, it would save about 7 million barrels of oil per year and reduce annual greenhouse gas emissions by between 2.1 and 2.4 million metric tons of CO2 per year, equal to the emissions savings from more than 1,000 two-megawatt wind turbines.”

Giving up the role of driving to let robots drive us around

It seems far-fetched to imagine a world where humans no longer operate their own vehicles, but instead have autonomous taxis that take them everywhere they need to go.However, These ideas are not ludicrous in any way for companies like Google. In fact they have been testing self-driving cars on roads with non-autonomous vehicles for years, with an amazingly low number of incidents reported.

According to Google’s reports, “In the six years of our project, we’ve been involved in 14 minor accidents during more than 1.8 million miles of autonomous and manual driving combined. Not once was the self-driving car the cause of the accident.” Since the Google autonomous vehicle program began, never once have one of the 14 incidents been the direct result of the google self-driving car.

 

This is not due to a shortage of Google’s autonomous vehicles on the road either. Currently in Mountain view, California, there are a total of 48 cars operating on the public roads at any given time.

Autonomous Taxis are the clean transportation solution to brighter future for planet earth. At the rate that autonomous vehicles are being tested, and the tremendous benefits of switching to this mode of transportation, it may not be long before you’re hitching a ride with an autonomous taxi.

The main focus of the Qualcomm and Daimler/Mercedes-Benz collaboration is to find a way to charge electronic vehicles and hybrids without the use of a plug. With car charging stations not readily available everywhere, this new feature could finally make owning electronic cars a feasible option for the majority of people.

Thomas Webber, a board member for research and development at Daimler, stated that remaining on the cutting edge of technology is at the top of both companies’ goals. To do that they are taking wireless charging one step further.
