Fiat Chrysler was recently issued a huge blow. That blow is a $70 million fine for failing to submit safety data to the NHTSA. They require companies to send them that information. It was said by Anthony Foxx, a US Transportation Secretary, that when companies fail to do this, they will be punished.

FIAT CHRYSLER FAILS TO SUBMIT SAFETY DATA

The interesting thing about this revelation is the fact that a few months ago Chrysler admitted their fault. They said that they had not been providing any data for warranty claims, injuries, deaths, reports, and owner complaints for years. This is shocking especially considering Foxx stated that they require companies to do this. Foxx said that this is a legal requirement to protect the safety of people. As mentioned earlier, Foxx said any company to fail to do so will receive the necessary punishment.

FIAT CHRYSLER RECALLED A RECORD AMOUNT OF VEHICLES

Fiat Chrysler has recalled many vehicles this year. They have done so on around 11 million cars, which is a ridiculous amount. It is understandable that companies need to recall their products, but 11 million is just too high. Not only that, but the NHTSA has announced that Fiat Chrysler’s new penalty is $175 million. Even for a company as big as Fiat Chrysler, $175 million is a lot of money and losing that wouldn’t make anybody happy.

FIAT CHRYSLER STATES CONCERN

The company has issued a statement saying that they do take this situation extremely seriously. They mention how they are continuing to talk with the NHTSA to make sure this does not happen again. One thing for them is they better hope they get the memo. Hopefully, they do because if they do not and they continue to do this, they could be damaged for a long time.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has just imposed its largest civil penalty ever. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has slapped Fiat Chrysler with a fine of up to $105 million for allegedly mishandling the recalls of more that 11 million cars that are potentially defective.

The Transportation Secretary is using Fiat Chrysler as an example that they are sending very sharp signals to the industry that they are very serious about not violating laws. They are also enforcing the importance of proper recalls, and that their goal is to ensure the safety of the American public, and to make sure defective vehicles are off of the roads.

COMPANY MAY HAVE TO BUY BACK OVER A HALF MILLION VEHICLES

As a part of the agreement, the company might have to buy back more than half a million vehicles at prices that are significantly higher than the market value. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told reporters during a conference call that they are using their authority to get defective vehicles repaired or off of the road.

According to reports from the NHTSA, Chrysler inappropriately made over two dozen recalls including Dodges and Jeeps with electrical problems, defective switches, and faulty axles. Some car owners were not properly notified of their cars’ defects and the options for repairing them were not always timely or effective.

NHTSA SAYS CHRYSLER PROVIDED FAULTY INFORMATION

The NHTSA says that the company also provided the agency with incorrect and incomplete information which is potentially a violation of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. According to NHTSA officials, this is a very good example of how to not properly issue a recall.

In addition to the $70 million cash penalty, the NHTSA is also fining Chrysler Group LLC $20 million to address the recall issues and if the company doesn’t perform properly, it could lead to another $15 million fine which brings potential damages to $105 million.

THEY WILL HAVE TO OFFER INCENTIVES TO JEEP OWNERS

Chrysler will be required to offer certain Jeep owners cash incentives to get their vehicles fixed. Also, if the owner opts out of the repairs they may trade in the trucks, which are prone to fires after rear-impact crashes, at rates a lot higher than the market value.

Fiat Chrysler Will Have to Pay a Record Fine

It’s been a bad year for automobile manufacturers, and it’s only getting worse. Recalls have been consistently announced throughout the year for an ever escalating number of reasons, and investigations have shown a stunning amount of negligence that has led to these recalls needing to happen. Fiat Chrysler is one of the manufacturers dealing with some of these controversies, and while they’re just the latest ones in the news, they’ve been dealt the biggest blow of any company so far. Fiat Chrysler is expected to be fined $105 million in light of their actions surrounding a number of Jeep recalls. It’s the largest fine ever dealt out by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, besting the $70 million Honda was fined last year as a result of faulty airbags.

Fiat Mishandled Their Jeep Recalls

Fiat Chrysler has been forced to undergo 23 recalls centered around Jeep Grand Cherokees. The recalls involved, in total, about 11 million of these Jeeps. Among those Fiat Chrysler vehicles are 1.5 million Jeeps modeled from 1993 to 2007. Those vehicles desperately needed that recall, as there was a significant issue with the fuel tank. Severe impact to the rear of the vehicle could cause the tank to start leaking, and this had resulted in a loss of steering control, sudden shutdowns of the car, and even fatal fires. And yet, only 500,000 vehicles have been repaired for these issues, according to Fiat Chrysler. The NHTSA have deemed this response to the recalls inadequate.

The NHTSA Has Been On Fiat Chrysler’s Case

Fiat Chrysler’s issues aren’t exactly breaking news. The NHTSA has been extremely dissatisfied with Fiat Chrysler’s response to the necessary recalls, and this month it hit its breaking point. On July 2nd, they began a public hearing on the recall problems; the deadline for public comments at the hearing was July 17th.

Bad Week For Fiat Chrysler Getting Worse

On Friday, Fiat Chrysler had to recall 1.4 million more cars. This recall was a result of technology that could potentially allow hackers to access the vehicle. Presumably they’ll have a better response to this recall so as to avoid more fines.
