%Recently, scientists reasoned out that #gasgiant #planets like #Jupiter and #Saturn are formed from little space rocks, pebbles no more than a foot in circumference.% - http://clapway.com/2015/08/20/planets-begin-space-pebbles-099/

The genesis of a planet is a long-held mystery in the astronomical repertoire of mysterious tales of the universe. Recently, scientists reasoned out that gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn are formed from little space rocks, pebbles no more than a foot in circumference.

PLANETS FORMATION A MYSTERY

Until recently the formation process these planets was largely unknown to scientists because contemporary planetary models lacked the requisite time believed to be necessary for massive gas giants like Jupiter and Saturn to grow.

Consider the fact that the Earth probably took only thirty million years to form, despite the upper limit of its potentially having taken up to one hundred million years. The question begged, then, is how did Jupiter and Saturn form so quickly?

PLANET BIRTH THEORY

The theory among contemporary scientists is known as the accretion model. Put simply, it holds that the gas giants started as a planet-sized core of ice and rock, then grew as stellar gas and dust from the disc gravitated inwards, enveloping the rocky core in gas for the remainder of the planet’s life. However, this leaves us with the problem of how said hard core first came to be. In order to accrete the amount of gas and dust we’re looking at, the core would have to be ten times the mass of Earth.

Although the theory of accretion can explain how planets of the same order as Earth form, they don’t satisfactorily explain how planets of the magnitude of Jupiter and Saturn snowball.

“The timescale problem has been sticking in our throats for some time,” explained Dr. Hal Levison, an Institute scientist in the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). He’’s also Planetary Science Directorate and lead author of the new study recently published in Nature.

“It wasn’t clear how objects like Jupiter and Saturn could exist at all,” he reminisced.

GAS HEADWIND ASSISTS PLANET FORMATION

However, new research reveals that these gas giants could well have come into being within the ten-million-year deadline. By channeling small planetary pebbles with the flow of accumulating gas, or rather the headwind such a flow would create, the rocky bits would be propelled inwards at a significantly faster rate.

So long as these pebbles gather slow enough to provide enough time for the gravitational wells of the planets to interact with one another, this model has a high degree of correspondence with our Solar System’s necessary timeline.

“If the pebbles form too quickly, pebble accretion would lead to the formation of hundreds of icy Earths,” warned co-author Dr Katherine Kretke, also from SwRI. “The growing cores need some time to fling their competitors away from the pebbles, effectively starving them. This is why only a couple of gas giants formed.”

Levison added, “[a]s far as [he] knows, this is the first model to reproduce the structure of the outer solar system, with two gas giants, two ice giants (Uranus and Neptune), and a pristine Kuiper belt.”

Phantom Planet Posited as Fifth Outer Giant - http://clapway.com/2015/08/15/phantom-planet-posited-101/

An amalgamate of icy bodies occupying roughly the same region of space as Pluto might be proof that the early solar system used to be home to a fifth giant planet, scientists have hypothesized. If it exists, this mystery giant’s gravity might have had a brief but major interaction with Neptune’s gravity well while Neptune was already on its migration away from the sun 4 billion years ago. This would have caused the ice giant to jump to its current, more distant orbit, and scattered a cluster of its satellites into the Kuiper belt, and the far reaches of our own solar system.

THEORIES OF PLANET FORMATION INSUFFICIENT

This cluster of thousands of icy rocks, lovingly known by the name “kernel,” has been a source of mystery for astronomers for quite some time. The rocks composing the kernel huddle together, and never stray from the orbital plane of the planets, much different from other bodies of ice present in the belt. Studies performed before have hypothesized that such kernels of ice are the result of violent collisions of bigger parent bodies of ice, but this proposal could not stand up to scrutiny after scientists learned that these descendants of collision should then be scattered across the entire Kuiper belt.

NEPTUNE WAS AN UNSTABLE PLANET

However, recently one scientist in particular believes he’s discovered an empirical narrative that happens to fit the facts of this Kuiper belt mystery. An astronomer named David Nesvorny at the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, thinks the jumping Neptune theory (published in the September issue of The Astronomical Journal) has merit. Tracing the kernel’s movements back 4 billion years with the help of computer simulations, David discovered that such icy objects were swept up in Neptune’s gravitational field as it moved farther from the sun, long, long ago. Originally (if such an adjective makes sense on a solar scale), the blue gas giant orbited near Saturn and Jupiter, but as it left their vicinity, Neptune tugged pieces of the early star system with it, and they began to follow a revolve around the sun at about twice the pace of Neptune.

PHANTOM PLANET WREAKS HAVOC

Roughly 4.2 billion kilometers (2.61 billion miles) from the sun, having nearly reached its current home about halfway to the Kuiper belt’s present edges, Neptune’s orbit was jerked out of normal sync, and migrated out an additional 7.5 million kilometers (4.66 million miles). This happened faster than the cluster of icy bodies could cop, so they were suddenly launched out of their orbit to one 6.9 billion kilometers (4.29 billion miles) from the sun, where they remain to the present day.

Nesvorny believes the only possible way such a sudden alteration in the kernel’s orbit could have occurred is if Neptune experienced a gravitational distortion from another body, of comparable gravitational force. It can’t have been the work of Uranus, Saturn or Jupiter, since their orbits have never interacted with Neptune’s in a way specific enough to create this cluster’s behavior. It thus must be David’s giant phantom planet.

Scientists are unsure what might have happened to the phantom planet, but Nesvorny’s earlier planetary model from 2011 could only account for the present’s orbital patterns by positing a fifth giant planet.

WHERE IS THE PHANTOM PLANET NOW?

It’s likely that the phantom planet was ejected from the solar system after changing the orbits of the surviving planets, said Nesvorny. Not all planets formed in an early solar system survive the process of settling orbits.

“The Kuiper belt is the clue,” Nesvorny explains. “You see the structures there, and you try to figure out what kind of evolution would fit those structures.”

HISTORY OF PLANET MODELS

Before choosing his current model of Kernel formation, Nesvorny tested 100 other alternative models. JJ Kavelaars of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria, Canada levels that one of the most difficult parts of modeling is to successfully predict the motion of multiple objects in the solar system so that they still end up in their present locations, with the same velocities, with the same trajectories.

Nesvorny’s next step is to identify more Kuiper belt objects, specifically those still within the kernel. This will in turn assist future scientists as they endeavor to improve model accuracy, and David believes studying the origins of the outer solar system at summer’s end is the way to go.

Learning new things about #Pluto and #Charon is the new norm as of yesterday. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/15/pluto-and-charon-shows-their-unique-orbit-245/

Upon reception of new data and photographs from the New Horizons mission that flew by Pluto on Tuesday, scientists are now reporting that, unlike the earth and the moon’s orbit, Pluto and Charon have quite a divergent orbit. It’s so different, in fact, that it is the only instance of this type of orbit in the solar system.

What’s different about Pluto and Charon’s orbits?

The data from the mission revealed new information about both Pluto and Charon. It was found that Pluto is only somewhere around 8 ½ times more massive than its moon Charon. On top of this, Pluto and Charon are only 12,200 miles (19,634 km) apart. To put this in perspective, Earth is about 81 times more massive than the moon and are 238,900 miles (384,472 km) apart. Because the differences in mass are so minute and because they are so close, Charon doesn’t actually orbit around Pluto.

In reality, Pluto and Charon have what is known as a binary system, and this is the only orbit of its kind in our solar system. What this means is that the small difference of masses and the close proximity causes both cosmic bodies to pull on each other, creating a gravitational point between the two that Pluto and Charon both orbit.

How is this orbit possible?

Scientists first reactions were that Charon was once a piece of Pluto that was broken off due to a cataclysmic collision with another planetoid. This is very similar to how our moon was formed. However, further investigation shows that Pluto and Charon are almost too different for that theory to be viable.

Pluto is very rocky and has a very thick atmosphere while Charon is made of about as much ice as it is rock and has no atmosphere at all. There are nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide ices on Pluto, but Charon mainly has water and ammonia ice. As of now, it is clear that the two bodies have been together for billions of years, yet they are so incredibly different.

What about Pluto’s other moons?

Pluto has four other, smaller moons besides Charon: Hydra, Nix, Kerberos, and Styx. Like Pluto and Charon, they also orbit the gravitational point the two larger bodies create. Because they orbit two different cosmic bodies, the sun could rise in the east and set in the west on one day, then rise in the west and set in the south on another. Since the four smaller moons orbit the gravitational pull at a farther distance, it is safe to say that the binary system of both Pluto and Charon have four moons.
