A team of Italian and Swiss engineers have announced that they are building an experimental telepresence robot that will be controlled by brainwaves and nothing else. They explain that this machine is intended to help those people who have severe motor disabilities.

The engineers that are creating this robot have released some details on how this machine will work. The team of Italian and Swiss engineers have acknowledged that this machine will consist of a laptop that will be mounted on a base that is capable of free movement controlled by a skullcap that reads brainwaves. They say how the user can train the robot to recognize movements and react accordingly. The engineers continued by saying that the laptop will come with a webcam and this will let the user see its surroundings and also communicate over Skype with its built-in speakers. It seems like although this machine can think on its own, it will still need human assistance. However, the creators mention how this robot’s controlled software will allow it to decide a future command and that it will be able to avoid all obstacles during the process.

ATLAS, THE HUMANOID ROBOT

Meet Atlas, the gargantuan humanoid robot developed by the Alphabet-owned Boston Dynamics. Atlas can be seen running through a forest in an astonishing new video. The video’s experiment is also the first time that the robot’s capabilities have been tested outdoors. It has inspired a comparison of the 344 lb, 6’2 tall Atlas to the Terminator.

Marc Raibert, the founder of Boston Dynamics, explained the details of the experiment at the Fab Lab 11 conference at MIT earlier this month. The purpose of Atlas’ run through the woods was to find out how the robot would perform in an unfamiliar setting and test its balance.

Though Atlas currently requires the assistance of someone holding a connected power pack to run, Raibert has said that it will be able to run on its own in the future.

The Irish Examiner commented “Yes, the robots can now chase us through the woods.”And, aside from running, Atlas can also turn doorknobs because it has the ability to rotate its own wrists.

HISTORY OF ATLAS

Atlas the humanoid robot was debuted in July 2013 by Boston Dynamics, when the company was owned by Google (which is now owned by Alphabet.) It receives funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, which is interested in using the robot for military situations.

Like Google’s self-driving cars, the humanoid robot perceives the world with a laser radar system. As PCWorld pointed out, several changes were made to the robot this year as part of an upgrade. Among other improvements, its arms were repositioned to become visible to it, its actuators were modified to help it pick itself up from the ground and it was given lighter materials.

ROBO SAPIENS

After its release, artificial intelligence expert Gary Bradski claimed that “A new species, Robo sapiens, are emerging.”

Raibert’s ultimate goal is to develop robots that can equal or exceed human capabilities, he explained at the conference. The Boston Dynamics founder told the Fab 11 conference’s crowd that “We’re making pretty good progress, so [Atlas] has mobility that’s sort of within shooting range of yours.”

This goal, if achieved, might lend credence to some fears about AI.

Pepper is a Hit!

Pepper is a humanoid robot developed by the Japanese company SoftBank. On Saturday at 10 am, the first 1,000 Peppers were on sale for the first time ever. By 10:01 am, all 1,000 had found themselves an owner. That’s right, SoftBank sold out its first batch of the groundbreaking humanoid robot in just one minute. Pepper costs 198,000 Japanese yen, a figure that roughly translates to $1,600. However, that initial figure does not take into account the extra costs needed for insurance and the Cloud-based database that SoftBank has Pepper running on. There is also the potential hourly wage for using Pepper as a worker at meet-and-greets and other public events. A special draw at a SoftBank store on Friday also resulted in an additional thirty Peppers being ordered.

What is Pepper?

So, what is the selling point of Pepper the humanoid robot? What makes Pepper so different and so compelling to purchase is that by using its camera, touch sensors, and microphone, the humanoid can actually learn to recognize emotions, SoftBank claims. Pepper can not only learn to read its owner’s different emotions, but eventually develop its own set of ‘feelings’. In this way, the humanoid robot can potentially fill the role of an office receptionist. But in a household, where it doesn’t have to be a servant or worker; Pepper’s emotions can make it another member of the family. And with its capability to download apps and connect to the internet, Pepper has multiple ways of helping with the children, be it by aiding them with homework or telling stories. These apps are visible on a tablet found on Pepper’s chest; this tablet also has an emotion map that allows Pepper to demonstrate the emotions it is feeling at that moment.

You’ll Have to Wait for More Pepper

Don’t expect to order your own Pepper anytime soon. SoftBank does plan to sell the humanoid robot overseas at some point, thanks to new partners in China and Taiwan, but there doesn’t seem to be a clear timetable. The time for new orders will be announced sometime in July, which is also when the first shipments of Pepper will be delivered.

Humanoid robots working with astronauts may sound like part of a science fiction movie. Yet, they are slowly being implemented in the real world. Case in point- the first humanoid robot in space, Robonaut 2, has recently been picked for NASA’s Invention of the Year award for the year 2014. Robonaut 2’s home is ISS, where it works side by side with human astronauts. The technologies needed to make this space robot aren’t just useful to space exploration, as those technologies will be adapted for use on Earth.

Robonaut 2 was judged by six different criteria

R2 was chosen for the award by the NASA General Counsel, the NASA Invention and Contributions Board, and NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden. It was rated in six different areas: Aerospace Significance, Industry Significance, Humanitarian Significance, Technology Readiness Level, NASA Use, and Industry Use and Creativity. It is interesting to note how heavily usefulness to people on Earth was weighed during evaluations for this award. Due to its number of possible Earth tech applications, Robonaut 2 did very well in those areas.

Who was behind development of the space robot?

R2 was developed together with General Motors through a Space Act Agreement. The original prototype, R1, was built as a ground prototype meant to examine the potential uses for a humanoid space robot. R1 was envisioned to help astronauts conducting spacewalks by preparing their worksites and providing a precise set of mechanical hands for helping to perform maintenance and repair objectives. R2, predictably, is a better version of R1, upgraded to be faster and more dexterous than the original. It features greater mobility and a safety system that permits it to work alongside astronauts and potentially be of great help.

What are some technologies employed by R2 that may be useful in Earth applications?

Robonaut 2 is truly cutting-edge. It is the first robot ever in a human space vehicle operating without a cage, and also the first robot in space to work with tools designed for human us. Technologies originating from this project have given way to 39 patents issued, with more being reviewed. A few examples of the important technologies showcased by this remarkable space robot are a robotic glove, a robotic exoskeleton, and certain telemedicine tech.
