How effective is talk therapy for treating depression? If research does not yield great results, it is usually left unpublished and herein lies the problem. #depression #mentalillness #talktherapy - http://clapway.com/2015/10/02/talk-therapy-depression123/

Depression is a very serious illness. That’s why it is important to gather honest reports and findings about the topic. Unfortunately, if research does not yield great results, it is usually left unpublished and herein lies the main problem.

The Study and the Results

VU University Amsterdam’s Ellen Driessen, along with Vanderbilt University’s Steven Hollon, decided to examine this issue by conducting a study, similar to one done in 2008, involving the effectiveness of antidepressants. According their research, now published in the journal PLOS ONE, scientific literature has overstated the benefits of talk therapy as a treatment for depression. To conduct the study, researchers gathered data from thirteen pieces of research – all of which were funded, conducted and then never published due to poor results. From this information, they were able to conclude that talk therapy is 25% less successful than it was formerly thought to be.

Talk Therapy is still effective…

This is not to say that talk therapy is not an effective form of treatment. However, research that raises its negative concerns are generally unseen and not factored into account. The 2008 antidepressants study, as previously mentioned, revealed similar findings: antidepressant drugs also seem to be 25% less effective than previously thought. Today, the best and most successful form of treatment is believed to be a mix of talk therapy, particularly Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

What can be done to fix inaccuracies in the future

Going forth, researchers state that all finished studies, even the ones that do not yield desired results, should be published. They believe this will help correct the way that mental illness is treated and will ultimately help to eliminate bias, skewed in favor of the published studies. Furthermore, researchers emphasize the difficulty of treating depression as a whole; because of the instability of this disorder, it is very difficult to judge the effectiveness of the treatments that have been used or are currently in use. In fact, depression, along with a host of other mental illnesses, still has a cloud of stigma surrounding it. The best way to understand it and in turn, to combat it, is to look at depression from a variety of different perspectives.

Ignoring Hearing Loss Can Lead to Depression - http://clapway.com/2015/08/10/ignoring-hearing-loss-can-lead-to-depression123/

According to a study by the National Council on Aging, untreated hearing loss can lead to depression. The study showed that those who didn’t take advantage of hearing technology were 50 percent more likely to have anxiety and depression. The research was conducted with around 2,000 people with hearing problems.

The Neglect of Hearing Loss

It is a known fact, that hearing loss goes untreated for many individuals. Although there has been numerous innovative technological advancements, in an effort to better help hard of hearing people, most people between the ages of 20 and 60 push off getting their hearing loss checked. Data from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) shows about one in three people with difficulty hearing , in the age group of 70 and above, have never tried to use a hearing-aid.

The Correlation Between Hearing Loss and Depression

Dr. David Myers, a psychology professor at Hope College in Michigan, stated that “ anger, frustration, depression, and anxiety are all common among people who find themselves hard of hearing.” Loss of hearing can also result in a difficult social life and a constant worry of missing out on life. “Many hard of hearing people battle silently with their invisible hearing difficulties, straining to stay connected to the world around them, reluctant to seek help,” says Myers. These people no longer have complete control over their lives and increase their chances of emotional distress or healthy cognitive functions.

Technology Can Help Counteract Effects of Hearing Loss

At the American Psychological Association Annual Convention, a presentation revealed that hearing aids can help decrease anxiety and depression within hard hearing people. Also, they can help improve cognitive functions. Hearing technology helps people feel less alone, less apprehensive, and less pessimistic.

Loop technology is the newest technological advancement for hearing loss. The technology mimics WiFi and delivers sound signals directly to hearing aids. “Getting people to use the latest in hearing aid technology can help them regain control of their life and achieve emotional stability and even better cognitive functioning,” says Myers.Currently, loop technology is installed in public spaces in Great Britain and Scandinavia.

Does Your Man Take Selfies? Warning: Studies Show He Might Be Psychotic - http://clapway.com/2015/06/24/does-your-man-take-selfies-warning-studies-show-he-might-be-psychotic435/

“But first, let me take a selfie.”

Remember that annoyingly catchy song by The Chain-smokers that got everyone getting out their cell phones in time to the beat back in 2014? Yes, how could you forget it? Thanks to Kim Kardashian and her infamous Selfish book, on -you guessed it- selfies, this phenomenon is still very much alive.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for those posing in front of the camera (or behind if, like me you still have to turn your phone around to take a photo of your face). According to scientific research, there is a lot to be said for this infamous new part of modern communication and it isn’t all that positive, especially if you are a man. It seems that the selfie is taking our generation on a slow self-destructive road, and here’s how.

Never Trust A Man And His Camera

Scientific studies at Ohio University have looked into the selfie – taking habits of a modern man. The conclusion? According to lead researcher Jesse Fox, a man who takes selfies is far more likely to be narcissistic and self-centered. All that posing in front of the phone is just about him, after all. As a result, he is far more likely to objectify himself, leading to psychotic behavior and mental illnesses such as eating disorders– yikes! There is also evidence to suggest that a relationship is not as strong or supportive if both partners are constantly taking photos of themselves, rather than focusing on each other.

Ladies– Your Selfie Could Cost You That Dream Job

It’s not just the men who are suffering at the hands of the selfie stick – yes, there is even a stick named after this trend now too. There is evidence to suggest that taking a selfie is less likely to get you a job, and less likely for other people to take you seriously. That’s right, a selfie study at Oregon State University, posted on on Woman’s Forum revealed that over 100 females were analyzed, with those taking more selfies being considered less competent at work and less socially attractive. With the power of the Internet, that selfie we take and post on social media is then forever afloat on the big World Wide Web.

While girls should not run a mile next time they go on a date to catch their guy taking selfies (chances are he wants to make sure he is looking his best anyway), nor should men Google symptom themselves for Psychotic Selfie Disorder after reading this, we should be aware of the consequences this vain new revolution will have on our reputations. But one more selfie won’t harm I guess, so

“first, let me take a selfie…”
