Study Finds Vitamin D Raises Risk of Schizophrenia - http://clapway.com/2015/10/29/new-study-vitamin-d-tied-to-schizophrenia123/

We get Vitamin D for a wide slew of things: sunlight, fish, soymilk, milk, even chocolate. A healthy level of Vitamin D gives us healthy bones and teeth, and it’s even been linked to help keep type 1 diabetes at bay. A new study has linked it to the incidence of multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia, and its results reveal that while vitamin D deficiency has a surprising effect on specifically schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis.

This Study Finds Interesting Evidence about Vitamin D’s Link to MS and Schizophrenia

Did your doctors ever say that if you get a lot of sunlight exposure, you’d get tons of good sunlight and it would decrease the chance of getting multiple sclerosis? Actually, Vitamin D has been linked to a couple neuropsychiatric disorders, like schizophrenia, autism and Alzheimer’s. It’s been clear with most of them, but not as much with schizophrenia. A new study attempts to analyze the real effects of vitamin D deficiency on the incidence of schizophrenia and multiple sclerosis.

The main focus of the study was to explore if a variation of a gene associated with vitamin D deficiency had any effect in chronic psychosis and if it played any roles in multiple sclerosis by testing it on chronic psychosis patients. The results of the study were quite disparate: one of the results showed that increased vitamin D levels can increase the risk of multiple sclerosis while at the same time decrease the risk of schizophrenia.

What Does This Mean?

The study isn’t conclusive enough to draw any definite conclusions, but this can only mean one thing: nothing in excess or surplus is good for the human body. So to all of that vitamin D loaded orange juice, milk, those fish oil supplements, and the soymilk in your coffee: just keep it simple. You might end up having to deal with multiple sclerosis. Some will argue that you’ll at least not go crazy.

Jokes aside, being healthy and not health-obsessed goes a long way. Spend ten minutes under the sun but cover up well and wear sunblock if you have to, and talk to your doctor about your vitamin levels, because it is always better to be safe than sorry.

Study Finds Vitamin D Raises Risk of Schizophrenia

Lack of Vitamin D May Cause Multiple Sclerosis #vitamind #ms #multiplesclerosis - http://clapway.com/2015/08/27/vitamin-d-multiple-sclerosis123

A study published in the journal PLoS Medicine has, for the first time, established a possible causal role for vitamin D deficiency in the susceptibility to multiple sclerosis ⎯ a debilitating neurodegenerative condition that has no cure yet.

Vitamin D and multiple sclerosis: what’s the deal?

Multiple sclerosis(Ms) is an autoimmune condition wherein the body’s own immune system attacks the nerves in the brain and spinal cord. The attack is specifically directed to myelin, the insulating material that sheaths nerve cells. Destruction of this coating disrupts communication between nerves, thereby causing both physical and mental problems. Since this disease has no known cure yet, efforts are ongoing to detect any risk factors that may increase the likelihood of developing the disease. A low level of vitamin D is one such risk factor; multiple studies have found an association between deficiency of the vitamin and an increased risk for MS. This study wanted to take it a step further and determine if vitamin D deficiency could actually cause MS. For that purpose, the researchers studied four genetic variants linked to low production of vitamin D and quantified how much each variant affected vitamin D levels.

Genetically lowered vitamin D strongly increases the risk for multiple sclerosis

The study used a method called Mendelian randomization to rule out confounding factors that generally plague genetic analyses. They examined the four genetic variants among participants of the International Multiple Sclerosis Genetics Consortium study, a genome-wide association study with up to 14,498 people with MS and 24,091 healthy controls. All the participants of this study were of European descent. When looking at the relationship between the genetic variant-induced reduction in vitamin D and the risk for MS susceptibility, they found that a decrease of one standard deviation of the vitamin levels increased the risk of MS twofold.

Still some questions unanswered

Since the genetic variants are randomly inherited in individuals, the results from this study are majorly unbiased and credible. However, there are still many confounding factors that cannot all be accounted for, even after randomization. Therefore, the causal link between vitamin D and MS cannot be established unequivocally. Nevertheless, more studies that replicate these findings may establish this close to a certainty. Meanwhile, research exploring the effect of vitamin D supplements on the prevention or stalling of MS symptoms could be a viable avenue.

#TouchFREE tech is here, serving those with #disabilities looking for a solution like this one. - http://clapway.com/2015/08/13/sesame-enable-touch-free-technology-is-here-somehow-353/

It feels like yesterday flip phones having one camera and your favorite song as a ringtone were the must-have gadgets. But in only 10 years, technology has progressed from manual handheld cellular devices to the world’s very first Touch FREE cellular device.

Who are Sesame Enable?

Sesame Enable was created to assist individuals suffering from illnesses such as ALS, paralysis, MS, and Parkinsons that prevent mobility/operating high-tech devices. The invention came to life after Co-Founder & CEO, Oded Ben Dov was given the idea from his Co-Founder, Giora Livine. Livine has lived quadriplegic for nine years after a spinal cord injury.

A Touch-Free Video Game

After discovering a video game invented by Ben Dov, Livine contacted Ben Dov and asked him to build him a smartphone that possess the same features. The game enabled its players to navigate through the game by simply motioning their head.

According to the Sesame Enable website, “The Sesame phone works by tracking the user’s head movements using the built-in, front-facing camera on the phone. . . The on-screen cursor is controlled by the position and movements of a user’s head, and supports even minimal movements.” Individuals who are physically challenged have the ability to check e-mails, play games and browse the web without lifting a finger.

Ben Dov was Down on his Luck and Indiegogo Answered

The irony of this occurrence is Ben Dov’s difficulty with finances upon the creation of his device. Oded Ben Dov struggled during the early stages of his project trying to fund it. His goal was to raise $30,000 and after coming across crowdfunding, Ben Dov has managed to receive $50,276 to support the cause. Indiegogo.com is the largest global fundraising site in the world and also the crowdfunding site Ben Dov decided to use. In addition to Ben Dov and his team’s accomplishments on, under the name Sesame Enable, they won first place in Verizon’s powerful answers contest.

Where to find Sesame Enable Touch-FREE Devices?

The device is not yet available in stores for in the U.S. however, it can be ordered through the Sesame Enable website. “About 2 million people in the U.S. could benefit from such a device,” said Ben Dov, “”Smarter devices that can be activated by voice, vision or slight movement have the potential of transforming many lives, increasing independence, access and communication.”
