The aftermath of Climate Conference at Paris brought UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon to taking the stand to speak out and encourage nations to fight global warming. The Secretary General is urging governments to set of an energy revolution to cut down on carbon emissions and stop global warming from evolving any further.

Paris Conference Solved Nothing, So Ban Ki Moon Takes Initiative

All agreements drafted during the Paris Climate Conference left all the most important issues out. Because of this, the UN has looked to take things into their own hands. Ban Ki Moon declared that the hands of the clock are turning towards climate catastrophe in a speech delivered to all world leaders. The world is expecting more from politicians than the superficial measures that have been taken so far.

Developed Countries Must Take the First Step Against Climate Changes

The mission of world leaders, beyond handling economies and politics, is to help eradicate poverty, promote clean energy and help provide jobs, opportunities and hope for future generations. Ban Ki Moon hopes ministers from around the world will do just that. This year marked the 21st Climate Conference, whose only purpose is to find solutions to the threat of global warming and climate change.

The World’s First Priority is to Find and Use Cleaner Sources of Energy

Ban Ki Moon went on to address all nations. Not only developed powers have to take on the initiative to find clean energy alternatives. While developed countries must take the lead, all other nations must follow suit to the best of their ability. He pointed out major developing countries like India are insisting on their right to use fossil fuels to develop, like Western countries did during the Industrial Revolution.

According to that logic, the West is responsible for the peaking levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. It’s a very valid claim. However, it won’t help solve global warming. India has declared that it will ensure that first-world countries will pay their debt to the environment for taking advantage of it.

After the failure of the 2009 Copenhagen conference for climate change, the Paris climate conference hopes to bring some more realistic solutions to global warming. International negotiators will be meeting at the famed city to attempt to produce plans to press world governments to lower greenhouse gas emissions and to create institutions that monitor this progress.

More than 125 Nations Are Participating in the Conference

The result of the conference, according to analysts, will likely be something similar to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade after World War II. This encouraged nations to negotiate with each other and form agreements to lower trade barriers. With over 125 countries participating, there can be a lot of positive initiative to start making some changes.

The Countries With Highest Rates of Emissions Are Already Pledging Change

The United States is already on board, promising to cut their greenhouse gas emissions by 26%-28% from 2005 levels by 2025, and China promises to peak their emissions within 15 years, and increase the use of renewable energy nationwide and setting a carbon price. In Europe, there is already a carbon-price in place, and the participating European countries are promising to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 40% from their 1990 by 2030.

If These Promises Are Followed, Global Temperatures Will Rise 2.7C

The target is to keep global warming below 2C, and 2.7C is a much closer target and a much more feasible one. The Paris climate conference, if it is more than talk, can bring the world closer to cutting down climate change and reduce the warming of the oceans.
