Bright light has been considered a sex signal in the animal kingdom, and it seems we are no different. New research published in the Journal of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics suggests that bright light therapy can improve sex drive and could even treat sexual disorders in humans.

This Wouldn’t Be The First Study

Studies have been made where it was found that glow worms that had the brightest tail were the most attractive to males and were more likely to lay more eggs, and this must have awakened curiosity to see if the same could be said for humans, because studies analyzing light therapy and its effect on sexuality have been going on for a long time.

A few years ago, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences sponsored a study that took 22 women with longer menstrual cycles, and used bright light therapy to test if it affected the ovulation process or any sex hormones. After a testing period, the results showed that menstrual cycles were relatively normalized and that sex hormone production was boosted.

This new study takes it to the next level, by examining if bright light therapy has any effect on people with hypoactive sexual desire disorder, sexual arousal disorder, and orgasmic disorder. They were between ages of 39-60. Two testing groups were formed: one that would receive real bright light therapy, or placebo light therapy.

The results found that 60% of of the group that received real bright light therapy no longer met their criteria of the sexual disorders and even had improved sexual satisfaction, while 100% of the placebo group still met the criteria for sexual disorder.

So Bright Light Treatment Makes Sex Better

The results of this study reveal that there is a significant improvement in sexual satisfaction in three out of five of the people in the study, so this could actually be used to treat people with sexual dysfunction disorders, even those linked to psychiatric illnesses, and obviously could give a boost to people with lower sex drives. It may not make you better at sex, but it could certainly make sex better.

Unsurprisingly, a double standard exists for many societal principals in the world today. In particular, when it comes to having sex, girls often are stigmatized, as opposed to boys, who are actually praised for the same “feat.” According to a recent five-year study, which followed nearly 1,000 kids, this double standard begins rather early in life and can ultimately influence the amount of friendships an individual has or maintains.

THE UNEXPECTED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SEX AND FRIENDSHIPS

Although the average person does not have sex until the age of 17, the study specifically followed “sexually precocious” kids between the ages of 11 – 16. Based on the data, girls who became sexually active had 45% fewer friends after having sex, whereas boys actually gained 88% more friends. Strangely enough, the opposite is true when it comes to making out. Girls who made out, but did not have sex, gained 25% more friends, as opposed to boys, who lost 29%.

What’s the reasoning behind this phenomenon? According to Derek Kreager, a sociologist at Pennsylvania State University, girls are rewarded for more modest behavior, while men are looked down upon when they take things too slowly.

The results of the study were obtained through analysis of data from the PROSPER longitudinal study (PROmoting School-community-university Partnerships to Enhance Resilience), which examined kids, ages 11-16, from 28 rural communities in Iowa and Pennsylvania across the span of four years (2003 to 2007). As part of the study, the kids took five surveys about their sexual activity and the number of friendships they had. Researchers than compared the number of friends with the age at which the students began to make out or partake in sexual activity.

The results obtained helped researchers identify a notable correlation. However, according to Kreager, it is important to note that other external factors, such as “attractiveness,” could have influenced the data. Even so, the relationship between sex and friendships seems to be “…long-lasting, even for people who don’t have sex early,” Kreager states.

The findings from this study will be presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Sociological Association taking place this week.

Believe it or not, but the topic of why we have pubic hair has been hotly debated.

As it turns out, our primate cousins evolved a bit differently. Our pubic hair still comes in big and bold, while studies show that apes developed soft, thin hair around their privates.

Unfortunately, sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a reality, and in case of infection, coming to terms with them is quite hard for anyone. Millions are unfortunately diagnosed with HIV every year, one of the most deadly diseases for which a cure has not been found yet. 
People who test positive to the virus today can live a “normal and healthy” life, although having to swallow multiple pills a day and live with the consequences of their side effects.

The way to discover whether you have contracted an STD is to get tested. But it may require time: in the case of HIV, for example, there is a “window period” of 4 weeks during which the virus will not show whether it is present or not (therefore altering the results).

A revolutionary idea

Three British schoolboys have come up with an incredible solution which would reduce the STD infections around the world. They came up with the idea of a condom which changes colour when it detects a disease. The intent of those behind this idea would be to “make life simpler, easier and better”.

The idea, which is still at the “concept” stage, involves a condom covered with antibodies which react in the presence of bacteria of an STD.

By taking inspiration from HIV-tests, which use colour-changing technology to detect the virus, one of the boys behind this new concept of condoms explains: “Once the body fluids come into contact with the latex, if the person does have some sort of STI, it will cause a reaction through antibodies and antigens hanging on to each other, which triggers an antibody reaction causing a colour change”.

The students explained how the colour of the condom would change according to the STD detected – green for chlamydia, purple for genital warts, blue for syphilis and yellow for herpes.

Thousands diagnosed with STDs yearly

They came up with this idea even by just looking at the figures – in 2013 alone, as many as 450,000 people were diagnosed with an STD.

Whether these colour changing and revealing condoms could lacteally turn into reality, is still not known.

Possible, but not a reality yet

Dr. Mark Lawton from the Royal Liverpool Hospital commented on how “It’s possible, [but] I’m not sure we have what we need at the moment.”, however complimenting the students for being aware of the issue of STDs and trying to reduce the problems they cause.

As a reward, the three schoolboys won £1,000 ($1,570) for they project and will meet the Duke of York in Buckingham Palace in London this fall.
