Volkswagen is kicking off the year with a great throwback. The car maker’s new BUDD-e concept is an homage to the timeless Microbus. Its hay day was between the 1960s and 1970s, but it has had great follow up models and has remained a fan favorite.

The van was iconic, and Volkswagen hopes to bring back some sparks through the new all-electric BUDD-e concept. The concept is a total zero-emission car powered by a battery. It features 373 miles of range on a single full charge.

The maker is joining elements of different eras to produce a truly unique car. The Microbus’s half-century legacy will be combined with a new set of tech features to make the car smarter and more intuitive. There are certain parts of the BUDD-e concept that can be controlled through hand gestures, and it can link home electronics to electronics in the car.

Volkswagen Had to Go Full Electric

This is exactly what everyone expected. Volkswagen is making an armstand dive into the world of electric vehicles. The BUDD-e concept will be designed with the car maker’s EV modular electric MEB architecture, which is fully dedicated to VW’s electric cars.

This architecture will hopefully put VW/s electric cars right on top with fuel cars by 2020. Electric vehicles only make up 1% of cars currently in the market and Volkswagen is one of many firms looking to make that number a lot bigger.

This is An Apology for the Scandal

The car maker has maintained that their most important goal for 2016 is solving the issue of the emissions cheating scandal in the United States. Beyond that, it will continue to develop the best electric cars it can. It will certainly develop cars that can easily compete with other electric cars like the Tesla Model S and the Nissan LEAF. This is not only because they can, but because they must.

Tesla is the leading company in making electric vehicles, and it seems as time goes along, the vehicles are starting to show issues that other companies seem to be wanting to take advantage of, but Tesla itself seems to completely look over.

The new Tesla Model S has had much hype attached to its release, what with charismatic CEO Elon Musk making every announcement about it seem like it would be the greatest car Nikola Tesla has ever made, but new data shows that the car has many problems to face, and things may only go downhill from there.

Consumer Reports recently revealed the results of their annual service, which rates car customer satisfaction and reliability. Tesla received a “worse-than-average” rating in reliability, and the announcement caused a 10% drop in the company’s stocks almost instantly.

Tesla Isn’t Perfect, and Neither is the Model X

Tesla is good at making headlines and hyping people up, but these announcements turn out less than surprising results. The only recent announcement that did get appropriate hype was the unveiling of its Model X, but otherwise, it has been quite disappointing.

Nick Jaynes writes in a report about the new model of the Tesla that the price, for starters, is steep. The Model X is set to hit the market for $132,000-$142,000, which means the targeted market is vastly different. While other Tesla models have been more accessible and targets customers new to the electric vehicle, the Model X aims for a more select crowd. The Model X, two years behind schedule, is forecast to be bought by current Model S owners by Elon Musk himself, which gives the project a surprisingly dark sense of publicity.

The Model X, as revealed at the unveiling event, runs on the same platform as the Model S and features the same powertrain. One of the differences is that the car was delayed from its 2013 debut and had more money invested than originally planned.

The Flashy Features that Delayed the Project

The Model X comes with Falcon Wing doors, which were developed by the company by manipulating ultrasonic sensors that can see through metal. The doors also required a restructure of the roof of the car to maintain crash safety. It looks like this was done just for aesthetics and not for functionality, apparently in Tesla’s attempt to compete as a luxury car.

The car also comes with a panoramic windshield, reaching well past the front passenger’s necessary line of sight. It is the biggest glass ever fitted to a production car, and required, according to Musk, a series of layered, gradient-tint glass to be possible. GM has been working on these kinds of windshields for 50 years, but it proved unreliable and unsafe. Tesla Chief Technical Officer Jeffery Straubel, Jayne writes, says it was made to enhance visibility. There’s also the tidbit about the Tesla coming with a feature called Bioweapon Defense Mode, which, in an apocalyptic situation, could keep passengers safe.

The Model X Won’t Be Available Until 2016

The Model X won’t get delivered until the summer of 2016, and in the meantime, Tesla has already made some more flashy announcements, including one for a Tesla Model 3, set to go on the market for $35,000, but there is a long way to go if Tesla hopes to re-engage working class customers.

Currently, the company seems to be focusing on marketing less than reliable cars to the wealthy, and it could potentially mean the end for the company as a whole or a serious downgrade.

Back when the Tesla S came out, there were rumors flying all over the place about a $30k variant coming along at some point. By some point, it seems the passage of several years was implied. On Wednesday Tesla opened up on Twitter about the new $35k Model 3, and set a date for when Tesla fans would be able to drive home their $132k Model X.

TESLA MODEL X

Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised a September delivery date for the Model X and that’s exactly what fans are getting. Musk said that customers would deliver their new cars by the end of September.

“First production cars will be handed over on Sept 29 at our Fremont Factory,” wrote Musk in a tweet.

The Model X is a high-end crossover utility vehicle that kicks things off at $132,000. Musk said that the X is a little pricier than the S, but because of its size, it will come with the same options. If you weren’t one of the first 23,000 people to pre-order an X then you will wait beyond September to get inside one, since they’ve been sold out for a while.

TESLA MODEL 3

Unfortunately, we won’t see the Model 3 for some time now. Musk has said that the mid-ranged car is set to debut in March 2016. On Wednesday Musk tweeted that production for the Tesla Model 3 car won’t begin for another two years, which means we likely won’t be seeing the car until around the fourth quarter of 2017 or possibly early 2018–no official word on a firm date, of course.

The Model 3 is rumored to get between 200 to 250 miles of EV range, which is a bit less than the Nissan Leaf’s reported 330 miles. Pre-orders for the Model 3 will begin in March, at the car’s unveiling and will start off around $35,000.

“The model 3 will be way different from any other car on the road. But, in a way that’s really useful and just doesn’t feel like a weird-mobile.”
