If you’ve watched the movie Valley Uprising, you’ll know that the massive Yosemite cliffs have convinced “explorers and madmen” to leave materialism behind and venture onto the high, lonesome granite. From Mount Everest to El Capitan, the world’s most challenging peaks have witnessed climbers going beyond human limits. Many, however, have died in the attempt…
Here’s a list of climbing tragedies that have shocked the world:
1. Veteran Northern California rock climber Brad Parker died in a fall in Yosemite just hours after proposing to his girlfriend during another climb.
2. Legendary rock climber and extreme sports adventurer Dean Potter lost his life while attempting parachute jumps from a 3,000-foot-high cliff in Yosemite.
3. John Bachar known for his skill at free soloing, died in a free solo accident at Dike Wall near Mammoth Lakes, California.
4. As a 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal on 25 April 2015, at least twenty two people were killed on Mount Everest, surpassing an avalanche that occurred the previous year that killed sixteen Nepalese guides, as the deadliest disaster on the mountain.
5. Militants stormed a high-altitude mountaineering base camp in Pakistan and killed 10 foreign climbers, as well as a local guide.
