Think about this: when you’re sitting at home after a long day’s work, you’re probably watching TV, aren’t you? Probably. According to a Nielsen report from 2014, the average American watches about five hours of television every day. This data is quickly becoming a thing of the past, however. A new report from Flurry says that people are actually spending more time using mobile applications than they are watching TV. The crazy thing? The amount of time spent watching TV hasn’t decreased.
PLENTY OF PEOPLE ARE STILL WATCHING TV
Nielsen received part of their information from a 2015 U.S. consumers report. According to the report, people spend an astounding 198 minutes in mobile apps every day, which is 20 minutes more than they’re spending watching TV (168 minutes). The same report indicates that these is up considerably from last year’s 139 minutes, and the 126 minutes in 2013.

The report says that there is no way to gather data on how much of this time is spent overlapping. Plenty of people will browse their phones while watching TV or during commercials. Apps also happen to be pretty easy to get in and out of quickly. Maybe people check Facebook while they’re walking to the bathroom, or while stopped at a red light on the way home (though they shouldn’t). The fact is, it’s like comparing apples to oranges.
OTHER STATISTICS
The report doesn’t just cover how apps compare to watching TV. According to the report, mobile users have also been “trained” to purchase content through mobile apps. What some might consider “TV” apps have surprisingly found their way to the top of the top-grossing apps, a place that used to be a popular hangout for gaming apps. The report believes that media companies could “move its content to apps and stream it over-the-top, charge consumers for it through the App Stores, and still make money from ads.”
APPLE WANTS TO COMBINE TV AND APPS
Following Apple’s news about the new Apple TV, Apple CEO Tim Cook had a lot to say about what he envisions to be the future of TV.
“We believe the future of television is apps. In fact, this transition has already begun,” said Cook. The new Apple TV sports a brand new operating system call tvOS, and has its own version of the app store. Users will be able to stream content, shop, play games, and do just about anything they would with their phone, but on the big screen. A lot of people are watching TV online, and Apple is trying to be one of the first companies to embrace this behavior.
