Facebook gives Prostitutes, Gays, and Drag Queens More Power - http://clapway.com/2015/12/16/facebook-gives-prostitutes-gays-and-drag-queens-more-power/

The real names policy by Facebook is one that has received a vast amount of opinion over the years. This policy requires users to use their real name. However, prostitutes, gays, and drag queens in the past have protested against it. It now appears like Facebook has finally listened.

THE REAL NAMES POLICY BY FACEBOOK

The company has all of the details about what names are allowed listed on their website. They state that users must use the name that they use in real life. They ask users to refrain from using symbols, numbers, phrases, titles, or characters from different languages. They also tell their users to keep a few things in mind. The company states that nicknames can be used as your first name. They give the example of Bob instead of Robert. They also warn that pretending to be someone else on their website is prohibited. This policy affects prostitutes, gay, and drag queens because they can not use Facebook with an alter ego.

FACEBOOK GIVES REASONING TO THEIR POLICY

The product manager of Facebook, Todd Gage, mentioned some of the company’s reasoning behind this policy. One of the biggest reasons for the policy, Gage said, is because of accountability. He mentions how people are more accountable for their actions when they use the name they are known by. This is a tremendous point by Gage as he is 100 percent correct. He also talks about how this policy makes it harder for bullies to smear others reputations and harass users.

HOW THIS POLICY AFFECTS PROSTITUTES, GAYS, AND DRAG QUEENS

This policy prevents users like prostitutes, gays, and drag queens from hiding their identity and using Facebook without people knowing the real them. This policy was actually protested against by them. It went so far as to Facebook actually deleting some of the accounts of gays, drag queens, and prostitutes using fake accounts. However, Facebook actually issued a public apology last year for those incidents. Now, a year later, they have decided to give this community more power.

FACEBOOK TO MODIFY THEIR REAL NAMES POLICY

When users are on Facebook, they have to verify their identification. However, although the verification process is still present, now they are altering it. Gage stated that they are going to be looking for new ways to reduce the number of people having to get past the verification process. They collaborated with the gays, drag queens, and prostitutes community and will allow people to use assumed names.

FACEBOOK FAKE NAMES WITH A CATCH AS WELL

The company is modifying their real names policy in another way as well. They announce that now if someone suspects that a fake name account is present, they must express reason for concern. Not only that but for the people who want an assumed name they must provide detailed information to the company on why they want it. Gage stated this claim so they can see if their reasoning is sufficient.

THIS IS GOOD NEWS FOR GAYS, PROSTITUTES, AND DRAG QUEENS

The protests done by this group of people have paid dividends for them. This is great news for this community as now they will have a little more leeway when using Facebook. This is also good for Facebook too as they can have the assurance that this community will get off of their back. Although they did not completely get rid of their real name policy, they at least comprised and made life a little easier on gays, prostitutes, and drag queens.
