UNDERSTANDING THE WORMHOLE


Ever since the theory was first put forth in the early twentieth century by scientists Albert Einstein and Nathan Rosen, many have speculated what the ultimate implications of the theory of relativity could mean. We imagine it as a shortcut or cosmic detour through unimaginable distances.


Yet, it’s not without risks: from radiation to immanent collapse, et al interstellar horrors make even the idea of wormhole travel a harried venture at best. The mathematics behind the theorized wormholes predicts such a phenomenon, but as of yet there have been no scientific discoveries or research to indicate any wormhole’s presence.


We also shouldn’t mistake a cosmic shortcut for a means of time travel. It is meant simply to help get to a destination faster. Even Stephen Hawking has said that wormholes are probably not capable in assisting our will to time travel. Sorry, Interstellar fans.


THE RECENT FUROR IN SCIENCE


It’s no surprise that studying such an interesting scientific phenomenon has generated such widespread attention. After all, so many of us are eternally on the lookout for some way to time travel, whether by gadget or plot device (i.e., fate).


But recent research released by the journal Nature does involve wormhole theory but approaches it in a different way than what Einstein had envisioned.

The study presents to the scientific community and the public the idea of studying a wormhole via magnetism. What was proposed was last seen in an earlier study in 2007 in the journal Physical Review Letters, which described a type of wormhole capable of being invisible, or cloaking.


A STEP FURTHER INTO THE STUDY


But new research has taken a slightly different avenue, keeping the idea of a magnetic wormhole to the fore. The study approached the magnetic wormhole through the use of superconductors, constructing a model in the form of a three layered object.


What the combined models would accomplish is to create a wormhole that’s magnetically cloaked, making any object traveling through it invisible as soon as it enters, giving the impression upon exit of seemingly popping out of nowhere on the other side. To understand this better, imagine approaching a tunnel in a mountain, suddenly disappearing from one end, and then popping back into existence at the other end.


Though the study proves the existence of wormholes in terms of magnetic interaction, there is no way to verify the existence of wormholes in space. However, the use of this magnetic wormhole technology would be both profound and exceedingly practical.

There have been many studies to suggest that development disorders, such as Autism are very common in creative thinkers. In fact, some of the biggest thinkers in history have been suspected to have been autistic. Let’s take a look…


ALBERT EINSTEIN


Citing the physicist’s educational slowness and his delayed development of language, University of Cambridge psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen has posited that the legendary physicist may have been a high-functioning autistic. Einstein – whose name, of course, is synonymous with genius – was also better at processing visual information than verbal information and obsessively repeated sentences as a child, characteristics of many autistic people.


CHARLES DARWIN


The theory of evolution’s father may have been an Aspie, according to Professor Michael Fitzgerald of Trinity College in Dublin. Citing the scientist’s social awkwardness and strange obsessions, Fitzgerald has said “Asperger’s syndrome gave Darwin the capacity to hyperfocus, the extra capacity for persistence, the enormous ability to see detail that other people missed, the endless energy for a lifetime dedication to a narrow task, and the independence of mind so critical to original research.”


MICHELANGELO


Research by Fitzgerald and Dr. Muhammad Ashad in 2004 suggested that the Renaissance man may have been autistic. Though art historian and Michelangelo expert James Hall criticized the claims, some of the polymath’s personality traits – poor social skills, narrow interests and hyperfocused work method – are consistent with the typical autistic person. As Ashad noted, “He was a loner, self-absorbed, and gave his undivided attention to his masterpieces — a feature of autism.”


ISAAC NEWTON


According to a BBC article on the topic, Oxford and Cambridge researchers on the subject believe Newton had “classic signs” of Asperger’s syndrome. Far from socially adept, Newton was extremely quiet and treated the few friends he had poorly. The physicist, who has also been suspected of having bipolar disorder, had a nervous breakdown when he was 50 due to paranoia and depression.


ALAN TURING


The legendary cryptanalyst has been alleged by the British mathematician Ioan James to been autistic. As Michael Gerson pointed out at the Washington Post, Benedict Cumberbatch certainly played him like an Aspie in The Imitation Game. The film’s director said in an interview with The Independent that “From a lot of the research we did, we had people say that he probably had some version of autism or Asperger’s or something like that.”

For the most detail image of star formations ever released, you won’t want to miss these ALMA images. The image of the galaxy features a magnified view of its regions depicting stars forming. It is even more detailed than any images made via NASA’s/ESA’s Hubble Space Telescope. Using 66 high-precision radio telescope antennas, ALMA’s (Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre) Array’s Long Baseline Campaign captured and released this spectacular image:

One advantage the ALMA Observatory has is its location in the Chilean Atacama desert, giving it huge collection area. The Atacama desert also has a very stable atmosphere. This allows them to take advantage of gravitational lensing for the best close-up sort of view. Gravitational lensing is an astronomical effect that uses the gravitational field of a separate closer galaxy to warp the distant one’s light. This is similar to that of the lens of a telescope.


Gravitational Lensing and Einstein’s Ring


If gravitational lensing is familiar to you, this is because Einstein predicted this theory in his general theory relativity. The Einstein’s ring phenomenon is when the light from a source is deformed by an objected with an extremely large mass — this can be in the case of a galaxy or a star — through gravitational lensing. This phenomena allows large objects i.e. galaxies to act as cosmic magnifying glasses.


NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope’s images are taken in infrared, and ALMA is a interferometer. Its 66 high-precision radio telescope antennas works together to capture light as if it were an enormous digital telescope. This allows ALMA images to have a resolution of up to 6 times higher than that of Hubble Space Telescope. Its images are so sharp that they allow scientists to see star formation clumps in these distant galaxies from a ground-breaking and large distance.


So far, at least seven groups of scientists have closely analyzed the data provided by ALMA and this momentous release of research has provided us with an abundance of new information about distant galaxies, their structures, contents, movements, and other related information. The huge space ALMA collects information from is helpful.

The quick, study flow of research papers already written and published after ALMA’s data set was revealed indicates the exciting, enlightening future ALMA images and ALMA’s sensitive observations will bring astroscience rather soon. Soon, the study of galaxy formations at the far end of our universe might be possible.
