Ten attractions and dining spots will be closing down to make way for Star Wars attractions at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. This is a significant amount of space for the Disney theme park.

Disneyland Prices Rise 31%, Star Wars Attraction Take Over

Universal Studios will be opening a section of their California theme park dedicated to the Harry Potter series. In order to compete, Disney is bringing in Star Wars attractions that will take up a significant chunk of the theme park.

This will not bring down attendance rates since Disney is Disney. Tourists and local attendance will not let up. The mere announcement of a new Star Wars related land will lure in Star Wars and Lucasfilm fans. Though many fans are disappointed that some attractions will be closing temporarily and others permanently, this is just an update to the parks. It was about time, seeing as Star Wars: The Force Awakens is topping the box office worldwide.

Lucasfilm and Disney Unite Once More for Theme Park Attractions

Disney acquired Lucasfilm for $4 billion. Thanks to this acquisition, Tomorrowland spots are being taken over. This includes a section of the Innovations building. The building will become Star Wars Launch Bay. It will be the mix of an arcade, a store and a meet-and-greet spots for Star Wars characters. A new dining spot called The Galactic Grill will sell food inspired by the series, including desserts like Darth by Chocolate and Cheese 3PO Burger.

There’s A New Hotshot in Tomorrowland

Disneyland is hosting Season of the Force, which started on November 2015. There’s no launch date for the land area. By the time the attractions are finished, Tomorrowland will become the main area for a long time. Lucasfilm and Star Wars fans will be crawling on top of the already high concentration of tourist and California residents that the park gets regularly.

There’s been no word on possible attractions at Walt Disney World in Florida. Because there is so much more space, it’s possible that a project is already in the works. Disney has not made any official announcements regarding Disney World. But can expect a chunk of Tomorrowland in Florida to also be laden with iterations of C3PO, R2D2, BB8 and all other beloved characters in the Star Wars franchise.

When Disney originally acquired Star Wars many fans believed that their beloved franchise was going to be driven into the ground. But to the surprise of many, the opposite has been happening. They’ve launched two successful (and good) animated series, Episode VII appears to be everything fans have dreamed of, and now, it looks like fans will finally get to pilot the Millennium Falcon.

Star Wars Land

This announcement comes from Disney Chairman Bob Iger. At Disney D23 Expo 2015 Iger stood in front of 8,000 fans and announced that Disney would be adding on two Star Wars theme parks to its existing Disney parks: one in Orlando, Fla., and another in Anaheim, Calif.

Each park will span more 14 acres each, which makes them the largest single-themed parks that Disney has ever constructed. The idea is to give fans a taste of what it would be like to really live inside the Star Wars universe. Each park will take fans to never-before-seen locations and will be filled with characters from Star Wars.

“We are creating a jaw-dropping new world. We’re bringing Star Wars to life in a big way. … These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet,” said Iger.

The Attractions

As of right now, Iger has only detailed two major attractions for the Star Wars theme park. The first will allow fans to pilot the Millennium Falcon while it’s undertaking a secret mission. During the mission fans will engage in a “cinematic battle.” The other attraction will put fans right in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.

Outside of the attractions, the entire park will be ran by “locals.” These will include humanoids, aliens, and robots who all run and operate cantinas and other shops around the park.

So When is it Happening?

These two Star Wars Land theme parks aren’t the first Star Wars attractions to hit Disney’s parks. Back in 1987 there was an attraction called Star Tours that has since been redesigned and re-branded as Star Tours: The Adventure Continues.

Unfortunately, fans will have a decent wait before the parks are open. The only thing teased, aside from details, were some artist concept renderings of the parks. In other words, planning and development are still underway, so it’ll be some time before construction of the parks are underway. Iger made no comment on what kind of time frame Star Wars fans will be looking at until the parks are completed.

When it comes to the upcoming Star Wars movies–owned by Disney, logistically disowned by George Lucas, partially corrupted by sub-par prequels, and an aging Harrison Ford–most fans of the franchise are split between semi-religious release at the thought of a continuation to the universe the epic tale has weaved, or abhor the idea of seeing some favored actors limp around on stage for what may amount to nothing more than symbolic mania, deadening the old trilogy’s significance.

PROFESSIONALISM IS NEITHER ANTIQUATED NOR DISTANT

Wherever you happen to fall on the Star Wars fan spectrum, please know that these actors are alive and kicking. Literally. Harrison Ford, who recently sustained serious injuries when he crash landed his plane at a Los Angeles golf course in March, made his first public appearance for the fans’ ogling pleasure at a Comic-Con Star Wars: The Force Awakens panel. He showed up at the end as a pleasant surprise.

FORD PLEASED TO GREET HIS FANS

At the popping San Diego Convention Center, Ford’s entrance sent the crowd into hyper-drive as Harrison Ford joined fellow re-un-ex-costars Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill. Ford missed an earlier Star Wars event that came too soon after his flight mishap, but he certainly looked pleased to stand in solidarity with his cast and fans, despite what looked like an awfully painful limp.

HARRISON FORD UNDAUNTED BY PLANE MISHAP

The moderator, Chris Hardwick, made a point to inquire about the fictitious vigilante’s health, but was curtly redirected by Ford’s subject-changing responses, e.g., “Yeah, I’m fine. Thank you very much.” When a fan asked about his foot from the wild crowd, Ford simply responded, “My foot? I just walked here,” rhetorically ending that conversation. In pain or not, it seems Ford is here to work. However, perhaps he should keep Chewie closer for his next flight.

During the talk, Harrison Ford became slightly emotional when the group discussed the strangeness becoming more endemic of 21st century Hollywood of returning to a franchise this big, and this culturally affective, after such a long break. Ford reflects: “It should have felt ridiculous. That was 30-(something) years ago and I sort of grew up. And yet, there I was doing something I did so long ago. I will tell you that it felt great… The original Star Wars…was part of the beginning of my work life. I’m very grateful for the opportunity I had in that film and for the success of that film.”
