The Consumer Electronics Show has been the stage for many exciting announcements. Most notably, Toyota announced amazing details on the development of Toyota AI. Toyota Hires Google AI Robotics Staff for Toyota AI

James Kuffner is one of the most surprising names on the Toyota AI staff list. Kuffner was the leader of the Google AI robotics program until he was recruited by Toyota. He joins the team as a leader in cloud computing for TRI. Another notable addition to the staff is Rodney Brooks, who hails from Rethink Robotics, as well as Marc Benioff from Salesforce.

Toyota is Very Serious About Home Robotics

Just last year, Toyota made the announcement that they would be investing a whopping $1 billion in research and development of AI and robotics. Their goal is to look into how to make cars safer and smarter. Not only that but they also hope to design robots that can serve as home assistants. The Toyota Research Institute has since then joined hands with Stanford and MIT. Toyota will even be opening a center between the schools. According to the company, there are as many as 30 projects under development with Stanford and MIT researchers. Toyota holds more autonomous car patents than any other company.

At the Consumer Electronics Show, TRI CEO also spoke about the institute’s mission. The mission is to create a car that is incapable of causing a crash. It also looks to increase access to vehicles for people who cannot drive, and make mobility technology for the indoors. Along those lines, they also hope to advance machine learning and the intricacies of artificial intelligence.

Toyota and IBM AI Move for the Bigger Picture

Toyota started out in the 1930s as a fabric looms manufacturer. They spotted the potential in car making and went on to make it a household name around the world. Now, the gears might shift again as Toyota sees the potential in robotics. This move could prove to be a pivotal one for the robotics and artificial intelligence as a whole.

Just today, IBM announced a partnership with UnderArmour and Softbank. Watson, the IBM AI, will be assisting UnderArmour’s fitness and health apps. One of the most notable announcements is that the partnership will introduce a feature that will allow the apps to suggest regiments to people based on their profile. Kind of like having a cybernetic nutritionist/fitness trainer. IBM AI will also be used on Softbank’s new robot, Pepper. Pepper is the Japanese company’s entry into the world of hospitality and consumer retail robotics. Powered by Watson, the Pepper will attempt to ‘understand the world the way humans do: through senses, learning and experience.’

The new company has no financial obligations to their investors, so they intend to spend all of their time figuring out the extent of the damage that it can do. This AI Could Even Be Used for Weapon Development and Military Capabilities

The danger with this kind of company is that it could go as far as becoming a nuclear weapon. It is a big leap from what AIs are now. Facebook and Google have given artificial intelligence a good-natured face, but this kind of effort may take it a bit too far.

Autonomous weapons aren’t a far-fetched idea, but they are a dangerous one. While Facebook and Google are focusing on understanding deep learning technology to aid the human experiences, Elon Musk is looking to find out how far it can be taken. They aren’t looking to make a profit from it, merely conduct research.

It’s Not Likely That We Hear Anything from Open AI

This kind of venture tends to be a secretive one. We shouldn’t expect to be getting the latest scoop on artificial intelligence in Open AI press releases. It may take decades for the intelligence to be advanced enough to become the stuff of nightmares, but it will inevitably happen.

On the venture, Elon Musk has said that he believes that so long as AI knowledge and technology remain within reach of the people, it really shouldn’t be a problem. The venture is no less dangerous and the risks are no less heavy, but this is a positive notion. Hopefully, experiments conducted at Open AI can find the ways AI can be harmful to people, and also figure out ways to counter any attacks courtesy of this intelligence.

In Twenty Years, AIs Could Be 100% Autonomous

Currently, any kind of artificial intelligence need input from humans in order to function properly. Whether or not this will change is still in debate. Artificial Intelligence is being researched by the most important companies in the world. We don’t expect much to be kept in the dark, but as the technology grows, things could go get covered in a lot of red tape.

After releasing a statement on its artificial intelligence development efforts, Facebook’s AI looks like it’ll kick Google’s Smart Reply right to the curb. Chief Technological Officer Mike Schroepfer took to to the Facebook newsroom to announce the latest in Facebook’s AI, including not only a function that allows Facebook to become accessible to the blind, but the ability for the AI to understand language, but also recognize objects, make predictions and make planning.

Among the most surprising revelations were just how accurately Facebook’s AI an not only understand and recognize language, but it can also recognize images. The system, called Memory Networds or MemNets, can read and answer questions about short texts. Similarly to Google’s new Smart Reply Tool, the system can read text, understand, and devise a way to respond. But unlike Google’s Smart Reply Tool, it cannot recognize images. Facebook’s AI allows users to even ask it what’s in a photo, and the artificial intelligence answers simply and accurately.

Additionally, Facebook’s AI will have object detection integrated into its systems. The new upcoming system would segment images 30% faster than any other artificial intelligence using 10 times less data.

All things point to the fact that Facebook is measuring up to both Google and Apple in terms of artificial intelligence, a tool that has become increasingly smart and useful for all consumers. It’s yet to be seen what the competing companies will bring to the table next.
