Everyone should be familiar with the song “Space Bound”, by Eminem. Well, if your are not, the lyrics are focused on space.

If Eminem wants to further his interest in space, then we have seven planets for him to check out. Also, these planets could end up sustaining life in the future.

PLANET 1: KEPLER-283C

On the quest to further inspire Eminem, we start with Kepler-283c. This is a planet that is 1,700 light years away from our home planet. Researchers believe that the outer part of the planet is the part of the hospitable zone.

PLANET 2: KEPLER-438B

Although this planet has a similar name than the previous one, it is much closer to Earth. This planet is 470 light years away from Earth and is around 12 percent larger than it. Scientists predict that the temperature on the planet is around 140 degrees Fahrenheit.

PLANET 3: GLIESE 667 CC

This is a planet that Eminem actually might be able to see through a telescope. Only a glimpse could be seen, but is is only 22 light years away. This planet could fit around 4 and a half Earth’s inside of it.

PLANET 4: HD 40307G

HD 40307g is a planet that supports full HD capabilities everywhere you walk. OK, so I am just kidding, but scientists show that it is a full 7 times larger than the Earth.

PLANET 5: K2-3D

Next up on the list is one of the ten closest stars with transiting planets to the Earth. This planet is not nearly as large as HD 40307g, but it is still a little bigger than the Earth.

PLANET 6: KAPTEYN B

Now we come to the planet that may have the best chance at suiting life. Kapteyn b is actually 8 billion years older than the Earth. This means that the likelihood of some sort of habitat living on the planet is greater. If Eminem actually wanted to look into this, then this planet would be a good starting point.

Brand new research suggests that the Martian moon Phobos may collide with Mars, making it a gas planet and transforming itself into a ring, like Saturn. The biggest planets in the solar system are the gas titans: Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune, and it looks like Phobos might help Mars join those ranks.

Mars and Saturn Will Look Like Siblings

The study, published in Nature Geoscience, suggests that these gas titans weren’t always aerated and that Phobos may become a ring around Mars as opposed to its largest moon. According to the study, every moon has one of three destinies: it will either stay in orbit infinitely, drift away or crash against its host planet. This is set to be Phobos destiny.

Part of Phobos Will Become a Tiny Moon and Another a Ring

The research, led by Benjamin Black and Tushar Mittal from the University of California, Berkeley, says that this all depends on what Phobos is made of. Phobos, which was hit by a crater and had its total area decimated, is a very porous moonlet, with low density. The experiments led the team to believe Mars will break apart a fraction of Phobos in 20 to 40 million years, forcing the moonlet to form a ring similar to the ones on Saturn. This ring could remain in place for as long as 100 million years.

If the Research is Accurate, We Now Know How Planetary Rings Form

The rest of Phobos will likely remain the same until it crashes against Mars, that is. More data acquired from probes like the PADME, PANDORA or MERLIN can verify these claims with time. Assuming the research is accurate, it’s possible that the same thing happened to the gas giants of the solar system.

MARS, THE RED PLANET

A number of things have been attributed to the red planet in contemporary times, much of it research-based, some cartoon-based. One’s childhood could have been filled with various science fiction novels about humanity colonizing the red planet or watching Bugs Bunny outsmart the Martian and his dog.

Regardless of how you know the red planet, it does not change what is known about the red planet and what secrets it continues to unveil to us. Recently, our present understanding of Mars has been complemented with the organization of Mars imagery, which can be seen on NASA’s webpage. There, you can actually take a tour of the planet.

NEW INFORMATION ABOUT MARS’ ANCIENT LAKES

Space news is always exciting to keep up with because there’s always something new to read in studies published with ever-more cosmic insights.

Although the study was published back at the end of June, the furor of the rocket launches and the impending arrival of the New Horizons and its information about Pluto overshadowed a new study about an ancient Martian Lake. But the study is now making headway; achieving its due attention.

In a press release published yesterday, the new information about Mars’ lake tells us that although the lake is now a dry-bed, it was once a sustainable place for life. It seems the lake evaporated much more quickly because the ancient body possessed a mere eight percent of the salt content as the ocean waters here on Earth.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

This means that the lake, since its formation 3.6 billion years ago, would have been able to sustain life. But there were other factors that were evaluated in the duration of the study that may or may not affect that finding.

One researcher commented that this lake would have been one of the last huge lakes on Mars and certainly had a long life before it dried out. Additional studies will have to be conducted to learn more about Mars’ lake, and the conditions surrounding its life and demise.

Our planet is the most amazing miracle. Not even just ours, but planets in general. Space has always interested me. You might have seen my blog on the most interesting Black Holes recently, so you know all about my youth as a space nerd. If you don’t, check it out. Black holes are insane. Anyway, so I was a space nerd and I know I’m not the only one either. Ancient Aliens on the History Channel is doing quite well in their ratings.

One of my favorite family trips was to the McDonald Observatory in Fort Davis, Texas. They would have special viewings and events and such, and one year when we went, I got to see Saturn. I have to tell you that from what I saw in that telescope, Saturn is just amazing. It’s so beautiful! While I don’t think any other planet compares to Earth when talking about beauty, (who can forget about the amazing sunsets we see and places like the Grand Canyon or the beaches of Greece?) Saturn came close. But what I’ve learned about Saturn’s moon, Titan might make it my second favorite rock.

Saturn’s Moon, Titan, Has More Earth Like Similarities

Scientists previously made a huge discovery that some of you, like myself, might’ve missed. Apparently, Saturn’s moon, Titan was found to have actual liquid on its surface. It houses a sea made of liquid methane. Not an ideal location to start planting your farm or anything, but it’s a pretty awesome discovery. Now, scientists are thinking that Titan might actually have an internal ocean made of water and ammonia. Massive movement of surface structures suggested that they had been resting on liquid. This theory hasn’t yet been fully proven, but they’re confident that it’s there and making changes to the surface of the moon.

Mars or Titan: Where will you build your new home?

Recent research suggested that Mars at one point might have had living organisms on it. Signs of water have been found and according to NASA, Mars might’ve had as much water as Earth’s Arctic Ocean. These new discoveries show not only an amazing advancement in our technology, but in our knowledge of the solar system we are a part of.

I think I’ll stay on Earth a bit longer, I kind of like it here. But won’t it be cool when we eventually see not only flights to Mars, but to Titan too. Would you take the opportunity to live on another planet?
