The co-pilot of the Russian Su-24 downed in Syria has reported that he heard no warnings before the jet was shot down, which highlights faults in Turkish technology. Konstantin Murakhtin, now at a Russian base in Syrian territory, was rescued by Russian military overnight.

There Was No Contact Between Jet and Turkish Military

The pilot maintains that there was no contact, no visual and no warnings issued via radio from the Turkish military. His other pilot, Oleg Peshkov, was killed by rebels once they ejected from the jet. The jet, apparently, didn’t even see the Turkish rocket in time to evade it, which is why they resorted to ejecting from the jet.

Murakhtin adds that he did not cross towards the Turkish border either. They had been following a routine route around Syria and were bombed in Syrian territory.

NATO and US Are On Turkey’s Side

Turkey maintains that the jet violated Turkish airspace, and that after issuing more than enough warnings, it resorted to shooting the jet down. Turkish officials say that the jet was warned 10 times in the span of five minutes before they took action, but the co-pilot is now refuting everything. NATO is backing the Turkish account of events, as is US military. According to them, there is audio proving that the warnings were given and promptly ignored.

Turkish technology is not lacking, according to Turkish authorities, and they sustain that it will back them up with video and audio.

An American counter-terrorism analyst claims that Russian military technology is very far ahead of America’s. This comes after Sunday reports that the US military conducted a successful test on Lockheed Martin’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense systems and Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense.

US Military is Suspicious on America’s True Power

The test, which cost $230 million, were conducted aboard the USS John Paul Jones destroyer, and according to the results, all missiles hit their targets in every test but one. The US Missile Defense Agency nevertheless declared the test successful, boasting on its power.

Certain members of the military, including Scott Bennett, a former US Army psychological warfare officer, regard this test as a bluff. The technology, according to him, is not up to par to what has been seen of Russian military technology. And judging by what’s been seen so far with Russia in Syrian territory, it’s obvious the Russians did their homework.

While this can be considered just cynical theorism, the truth is Russia is widely known for their technological expertise, be it for war or for space exploration. Russian presence in Syria means that they aren’t there to play, and according to anti-terrorism analysts, it’s best if the US has the same outlook.

Turkey released a purported picture of the flight path of the airplane revealing that it had breached Turkish airspace. Turkey stated it issued 10 warnings to the airplane prior to responding ‘within engagement rules’ near the Turkey-Syria border.

But the Russian Defense Ministry stated that objective surveillance confirmed the plane was not in Turkish airspace. Russian authorities claimed among its warplanes was obliterated by ground fire in north Syria. The Su-24 bombing jet remained in Syrian airspace at the altitude of 6,000 meters, the Russian Defense Ministry said. The pilots were able to parachute out of the jet before it crashed.

Syria Is At the Center of Terror

Syria has been embroiled in a brutal civil war for 4 and a half years that has killed countless people, made millions of refugees, and laid waste to entire cities. Turkey emphatically opposes the Syrian program of Bashar al-Assad. Russia is propping up the Assad regime.

Skirmishes between Turks and Syrians have taken place in the past, with Turkish officials charging Syrian aircraft of violating Turkish air space. According to Turkish reports, the minute of the aircraft falling into Bayirbucak region throughout from Hatay’s Yayladagi was captured on video camera, the pilot’s evacuation via parachute was also caught. Heavy smoke has been seen in the location where the aircraft dropped.

This kind of case was inevitable, given the number of nations included either directly or indirectly in the Syrian war. Currently, the United States, Russia, France, the Gulf states, Turkey, and Israel are involved in one way or another in military activity in Syria.

The terrorist organization known as “ISIS” has been taking control of essential territories in the Middle East, leaving hundreds dead in their wake, and piles of rubble in place of cities and artifacts. They threaten the stability in the Middle East and test the strength of the still developing armies in places like Iraq. Most recently ISIS has captured the historically significant City of Palmyra, killing over 200 as it lays waste to the ancient city. In capturing Palmyra ISIS proves to be a new type of threat. ISIS now greatly threatens the population of an endangered species known as the Northern Bald Ibis, and without intervention ISIS will cause the total extinction of the species.

 

Conservation Efforts Put On Hold Leaving Ibis Helpless

Many previous efforts have been made to ensure that the bird population not dwindle to a dangerously low level, and prevent the extinction of the species. In 2013 a few of the birds were moved to Europe for the first time since all of the Northern Bald Ibis were completely wiped out in Europe due to a lack of hunting regulations and other environmental causes, forcing them to die off in the region completely. Now they face an entirely new threat from the active combat present in the Syrian city of Palmyra.

As shots ring out and bullets fly, the conservationists in Palmyra are desperate to save the last of these Northern Bald Ibis that are left from extinction. Militant groups came into the city, causing many of the citizens charged with taking care of the endangered bird to flee for fear of losing their lives. Northern Bald Ibis in Palmyra once had a population of about 11 total birds, but this has been reduced now to only 3. Left behind are 2 male and 1 female Ibis. All three have not been moved out of Palmyra, because there is an egg that has not hatched, and cannot be moved without risking damage to the single egg that the 3 remaining birds have produced. ISIS proves to be a grave threat to the inhabitants in the Middle East, and to the historical artifacts that they will destroy. Although the fate of the 3 Northern Bald Ibis left behind is unknown, if there is no intervention to prevent the further destruction of Palmyra, it is likely that these 3 will prove to be the last of their kind.
