Some people think “climate change” is just a phrase used to cover up “global warming.” Global warming sounds so scary, but climate change sounds like something we can help combat or something less scary than the thought of our planet burning up due to a hole in the ozone layer. It’s remarkable how word-choice can have such a big impact on our ideas and feelings. It’s also interesting to see politically how people react to each set of words. Either way you look at it, changes are happening and we need to understand why. NASA and the NOAA are constantly studying the Earth and it’s climate changes.


Hot And Cold


We are typically taught in grade school that the Earth’s climate has always been changing. Evidence suggests Earth experienced an ice age previously, around 800 million years ago, as well as a “warm age” about 56 million years ago. According to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), Earth’s hottest period occurred before we even existed. Since humans have been present, our temperatures have been relatively stable. Before the industrial revolution, the climate changed naturally. Events like meteors, making their way to the earth’s surface, volcanic activity and natural energy variations caused these changes. So how do we know a large climate change is happening right now? And how do we know that we are assisting it?

Evidence


NASA has gathered evidence proving that in the last 650,000 years, Earth has gone through 7 cycles of drastic climate change. They attribute most of the changes in the climate before civilization to slight alterations in the orbit of the Earth and the amount of solar energy it receives. However, they believe that humans have induced the current warming trend. Scientists have discovered that global sea levels have risen 6 inches in the last 100 years and are continuing to rise. They have also made note of the rise in temperatures of the water and also global surface temperature. Intense glacial retreat and acidification of ocean water are other indicators that Earth is warming much faster than it naturally should. There are several more clues that scientists and NASA have spotted leading them their conclusion.

Scientists believe that Earth’s temperature, having risen 1 degree in the last century, will raise possibly 3 to 10 degrees more by the end another 100 years. While some of the causes are still natural today, there are several that we have control over. Burning fossil fuels is a significant contributor to the excess gas in the atmosphere. However, various environmentalists have found alternative fuels that work and slowly but surely, we are making transitions to aid our sick planet. (Link “Power of Poop blog post.) NASA is still studying on a global scale the effects of excess carbon dioxide and other harmful greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere.


Climate change is going to happen whether we are aiding the process or not. However, with our ignoring the fact that we are contributing to it, we are speeding up the process. These types of changes to the Earth often time takes hundreds, if not millions, of years to correct.


What You Can Do To Help


I feel like these are always questions about the always trending and always significant topic of Climate Change. There are many small changes you can make to help slow climate change. You can invest in energy efficient appliances and light bulbs. While various appliances might be a little more on the expensive side, you are saving money in the long run. Not only do those appliances help the environment, they also help your electric bill. Another tip we all hear about often is to recycle. How does this really help, you ask? It helps to reduce pollution from the extracting of resources, manufacturing of more products, and the disposal of said products. Using water efficiently also helps in a large way. It takes a great deal of energy to pump, treat, and heat water. By saving water, you are saving the atmosphere from gas emissions that are adding to the problem. If you have a green thumb, you can compost your food and yard waste to reduce the amount of overflow garbage in landfills. Everyone does it, and now there are more uses for it other than funny Snapchat pictures you send to gross out your friends. Wait, you don’t do that?–I mean, I don’t either, I’ve just heard of it. It’s a crappy topic of conversation at dinner, and sometimes having to talk about it downright stinks. However, behind that, poop is power! It’s a type of biomass.


What is that, you ask? It is a biological material that comes from living, or recently living organisms. Typically the term is used when discussing energy derived from plants, but it doesn’t always have to be from greenery. The most common form of this type of biofuel energy that we all know is burning wood. Other forms of biomass fuels can come from wheat stalks, corn (another very common type) or sugar cane. Cooking oil is another widely known form. These types of fuels are considered renewable resources, which is why they are constantly being advocated for in place of what we currently use. Biomass materials also take carbon out of the air and release only the same amount of carbon when burned.

Poop, along with rotting plants, is specifically considered a biogas. We all know that our poop has methane and carbon dioxide gases in it. These gasses are collected from burning the poop in an airtight container and extracting the gas, a process called gasification. This method produces energy.


Who Uses The Ecological Power Of Poop?


Farmers in Vermont have been using the power of poop for many years. This process begins with the farmers throwing anaerobic bacteria onto the cow poop. The bacteria eat away at the waste and then produce methane themselves. These farms often produce excess amounts, so they send their leftovers to nearby homes in the area, thereby giving them a more ecological form of power.


Energy doesn’t just come from animal poop. Humans can also produce it. Researchers in China have made a special toilet that takes human waste and produces hydrogen energy for use in the home. Though it cannot yet fuel an entire home, it can be used up to 40 times a day creating more and more energy to assist in sustaining your home. Another invention out of Singapore, also a no-mix, vacuum toilet, separates liquid and solid wastes and converts the former into energy and the latter into fertilizer.


This type of biofuel doesn’t have to be used solely in the home, and maybe one day can sustain us in a greater capacity. It sounds gross, and I definitely wouldn’t want the job of the person who has the messy job of handling poop all day, but it’s our duty to find alternatives to the nonrenewable resources we are currently using up. We no longer have to waste our waste, because poop is power!

I was raised with the notion that the world was my playground. My dad took my brother and I on summer vacations all over the United States and definitely gave me the wanderlust bug. Like most working class American families, we didn’t have the money to be taking trips overseas or to extravagant places–even in the U.S., but he always made sure we saw something. Needless to say, it is still a tradition for us to travel every summer, funds-permitting, of course.


Summer is upon us now and that means that many families will be road tripping or visiting other countries via air travel. To an ecologist, this might not be best news. More travel means more emissions released into the Earth’s atmosphere, and as we all know by now, won’t be helping with our climate change issues.


I’m the type of person who recycles everything that can be recycled. I get angry at my husband when he throws his beer cans into our regular trash. We as a society definitely have some landfill problems, and I refuse to add to that if I don’t have to. Our environment affects us in so many more ways than people realize.


Nobody thinks about how “dump soil” could affect later farming in the area. You think the food you eat now is bad for you? Just wait until even your “fresh vegetables” are genetically tainted because of the earth they’re growing in, not because of chemicals we put on them. Now, to step off my soapbox rant: I saw something really cool the other day that made a travel-hungry tree-hugger such as myself pretty excited.


The Environmental Protection Agency made a proposal to limit air traffic’s gas emissions just like they did with vehicles. How will they attempt to do this, you ask? After further research,I found that there are certain technologies might be our greatest resource for this air travel dilemma:


1. New Fuel Efficient Technologies


Just as we have new home appliances that are promised to help us live a more “green” lifestyle, the same “green” contributions can be made to many different types of technologies. Consider a fuel-efficient engine. Many manufacturers are attempting to make more fuel-efficient parts for planes, like using light-weight carbon fiber parts.


2. 3D Printed Planes


To add to the idea of fuel-efficient parts, a recent case study done by a Northwestern University confirms that lighter parts can cut fuel costs. According to their press release, they think fuel costs could be reduced by up to the 7% by printing some of the parts from a 3D printer. Of course, as the leader of the study, Eric Masanet, points out, we might still be many years away from this solution as scientists are still perfecting 3D printing.


3. Biofuels for Air Travel


We have all heard that term before, and I think what most of us assume with using biofuels (not just with planes, but even your car) is that it’s going to cost us an arm and a leg. There’s no way around this argument because it’s true. Biofuels are more expensive. However, a biofuel blend could be a great start!


These new ideas give me hope that we are on the right track to putting our environment higher up on our priority scale. It can’t take care of us if we don’t care of it. I strongly believe that, and I don’t think it should be considered only a political topic, just one of common sense and humanity. If you don’t care for the house you live in, it will start to deteriorate and fall apart. If you don’t take care of your body, it will do the same. What makes the earth we live on any different?
