3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process used to create three-dimensional objects. Although the technical definition doesn’t sound too captivating, 3D printers have been used for a variety of conventional and non-conventional purposes; take for example, Boris the tortoise, who recently received a prosthetic 3D printed jaw. Researchers have also utilized the technology in the scientific domain by using it to make bird eggs for research purposes, among other things.


Unsurprisingly, because of their growing popularity, 3D printers are constantly being optimized to perform more effectively. In the past, the majority of 3D printers could only utilize a single printing material – most commonly a plastic or resin of some sort. As you can imagine, this severely limits the type of objects a typical consumer can produce. Luckily, a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory is looking to change all that.


The 3D Printer Is Made Accessible for the Average Consumer


Generally speaking, a 3D printer that can utilize more than one printing material is extremely expensive. As such, the team at MIT wanted to develop a more affordable version that is accessible to every day consumers. With that goal in mind, The MultiFab was born.


What Makes The MultiFab 3D Printer Unique?


The MultiFab is capable of printing in full color, using as many as 10 materials at a time – anything from plastic, resin to fabrics. The new system, which can self-calibrate and self-correct, is built entirely from “off-the-shelf” components, attributing to its overall low cost.


The technology behind the MultiFab, according to the Christian Science Monitor, is also different. Javier Ramos, the project engineer, told Wired that traditional multi-material printers utilize an extremely precise mechanical system in order to ensure each layer of printed material is correctly aligned. The MultiFab, however, can precisely scan down to 40 microns through a machine-vision system, which is much cheaper to construct.


Furthermore, this unique 3D printer can scan large areas to “understand” a variety of surfaces and building materials. It is even capable of printing directly onto other objects. Unfortunately, the procedure to do so is quite extensive and can take anywhere from an hour to print simple objects to over a day for more complex items.

Tarek Loubani, a doctor working at the Shifa hospital in Gaza, has figured out a way to give hospitals across the blockaded strip easy access to low-cost medical instruments. Loubani has developed a stethoscope which costs only 30 cents and can be 3D printed.


THE PROJECT GLIA


Tarek Loubani has been “trying to release high quality free medical hardware to increase availability to those who need it”, as the website of Glia project states. Project Glia, according to The Register, was developed in the aftermath of the conflicts between Israel and Gaza in 2012, when Loubani and his medical team had no access to important equipment in order to take care of those injured.


In fact, as he said at the Chaos Communications Camp, he was forced to put his ear to the victims’ chests in order to hear their heartbeats due to the lack of good stethoscopes.


THE 30-CENT-STETHOSCOPE


Together with a team of medical and technology specialists, Tarek Loubani designed the stethoscope and tested it against global standard benchmarks and, as he says, it is as good as any stethoscope -“and he has the data to prove it”.


Now, he is confident that the medical instrument that he funded himself and has cost him more than 11,000 dollars so far will be approved soon since it has only been used locally for the past six months. Also, audio-frequency response curve tests revealed that it provides better sound quality than the infamous Littman Cardiology III.


The idea of the 3D-printed stethoscope was inspired by his nephew. When Loubani tested his stethoscope toy, he found it performed much better than expected.


The innovative stethoscope by project Glia has been released as an open source model on Github for anyone to use.


WHAT’S NEXT?


The stethoscope was just the beginning since the team is now working on some of the most expensive devices in medical centers including a pulse oximeter, an electrocardiogram for cardiac patients and will work on haemodialysis machines.


Loubani’s goal is to replace expensive solutions, following the footsteps of the Free Software Movement, and he hopes that in 25 years the world is going to be a better place. For everyone.

Lose the can of dancing beans. Seriously, it’s not worth your money, because robotics at Harvard University have just produced a 3-D printed, soft-skinned, jumping robot that is capable of autonomous navigation by combining speed and the looks of classic, clunky robots of the eighties’ rigid dreams.


SOFT SKIN, HARD JUMP


Science magazine described the jumping robot as “[a] 3D printed functionally graded soft robot powered by combustion,” in an issue dated for the 10th of July. The Harvard Gazette explains that the true engineering marvel in all of this is the capability to integrate soft and rigid materials. One such engineer named Robert J. Wood said that the idea of soft robotics is to create a line of robots that is totally soft to the touch. However, due to practical reasons, even soft robots will have to have certain specifically rigid components, e.g., electronics and batteries.


SOFT SKIN IMPROVES DURABILITY, VERSATILITY


So far, the soft jumping robot has shown a method of integrating its rigid components with a soft body via gradients of material properties softening the transition from hard to soft. If such material fails, it’s often the case for the quickened, unmediated transition from hard to soft causes damage, causing the robot to cease functioning, and fail.


The little guy–powered by combustion–comes in two pieces: the body is a plunger with three legs, and the core module, which contains mechanical components and power. A soft shield envelops this module, one created with a 3D printer. In order to move, the robot’s pneumatic legs inflate in order to shift its weight. However, the oxygen and butane in its core module are then mixed and ignited, blowing the robot up into the air.


EXPLODING ONESELF INTO THE AIR IS NOT A useless TRICK


According to robot pros at the University of Harvard, this little bot can achieve a net body weight six times that of its normal (that is, when it leaps vertically), and half of its body weight during lateral jumps. If the technology is employed in any sort of military field, the robot using the tech will prove a useful means of navigating through dangerous or obscure obstacles.


This jumping robot can also take quite a beating


Nicholas Bartlett, the first author of the paper on the robot, actually said that the robot is wonderful because of the way it lends itself so nicely to abuse. No, really. The gradient of stiffness the robot has available to it allows it to internalize the impact of many different kinds of dangerous landings, and can survive the explosions from combustion better than you would any sprite from a first-person-shooter.


The goal of this project is to explore the benefits of soft robotics in cybernetic design.

Amazon announced that customers could now use 3D printing to create and customise action figures from video games.


Since it launched its 3D printing services last year, Amazon said the number of personalised options have increased 150% in the last year. According to The Street, 3D printing is still at an embryonic stage as far as revenue is concerned, but the industry is expected to quadruple in size in four years as per Wohlers Associates forecast.


3D printing extends to gaming industry


The news to extend 3D printed products to the video game industry comes just ahead of the 46-year-old ‘Comic-Con’ convention in San Diego.


According to Steve Johnson, director for the Amazon Marketplace, the company sees great potential in gamers’ creativity. Studies have found that globally more than half a billion people play video games on different devices at least an hour a day. The number is jaw dropping in the U.S. where over 183 million people are faithful to the gaming industry.


“There is a lot of passion and excitement in the culture of gaming, as well as 3D printing, and by combining these two worlds and allowing customers to design and personalise their favourite video game characters we can bring enthusiasts even closer to the games they love,” he said.

I was raised with the notion that the world was my playground. My dad took my brother and I on summer vacations all over the United States and definitely gave me the wanderlust bug. Like most working class American families, we didn’t have the money to be taking trips overseas or to extravagant places–even in the U.S., but he always made sure we saw something. Needless to say, it is still a tradition for us to travel every summer, funds-permitting, of course.


Summer is upon us now and that means that many families will be road tripping or visiting other countries via air travel. To an ecologist, this might not be best news. More travel means more emissions released into the Earth’s atmosphere, and as we all know by now, won’t be helping with our climate change issues.


I’m the type of person who recycles everything that can be recycled. I get angry at my husband when he throws his beer cans into our regular trash. We as a society definitely have some landfill problems, and I refuse to add to that if I don’t have to. Our environment affects us in so many more ways than people realize.


Nobody thinks about how “dump soil” could affect later farming in the area. You think the food you eat now is bad for you? Just wait until even your “fresh vegetables” are genetically tainted because of the earth they’re growing in, not because of chemicals we put on them. Now, to step off my soapbox rant: I saw something really cool the other day that made a travel-hungry tree-hugger such as myself pretty excited.


The Environmental Protection Agency made a proposal to limit air traffic’s gas emissions just like they did with vehicles. How will they attempt to do this, you ask? After further research,I found that there are certain technologies might be our greatest resource for this air travel dilemma:


1. New Fuel Efficient Technologies


Just as we have new home appliances that are promised to help us live a more “green” lifestyle, the same “green” contributions can be made to many different types of technologies. Consider a fuel-efficient engine. Many manufacturers are attempting to make more fuel-efficient parts for planes, like using light-weight carbon fiber parts.


2. 3D Printed Planes


To add to the idea of fuel-efficient parts, a recent case study done by a Northwestern University confirms that lighter parts can cut fuel costs. According to their press release, they think fuel costs could be reduced by up to the 7% by printing some of the parts from a 3D printer. Of course, as the leader of the study, Eric Masanet, points out, we might still be many years away from this solution as scientists are still perfecting 3D printing.


3. Biofuels for Air Travel


We have all heard that term before, and I think what most of us assume with using biofuels (not just with planes, but even your car) is that it’s going to cost us an arm and a leg. There’s no way around this argument because it’s true. Biofuels are more expensive. However, a biofuel blend could be a great start!


These new ideas give me hope that we are on the right track to putting our environment higher up on our priority scale. It can’t take care of us if we don’t care of it. I strongly believe that, and I don’t think it should be considered only a political topic, just one of common sense and humanity. If you don’t care for the house you live in, it will start to deteriorate and fall apart. If you don’t take care of your body, it will do the same. What makes the earth we live on any different?
