Blackberry Also Reported Losses of $89 Million

Things haven’t been easy for Blackberry since Samsung and Apple monopolized the Western smartphone market. The company is taking up a comeback strategy. While their losses show some merit, there’s a lot of work to do.

Blackberry generated a total revenue of $548 million, which is an increase from the $490 million reported in the previous quarter. This quarter makes the firs tin the whole year were there higher software revenue offsetting a fall in monthly service fees from older Blackberry smartphones.

Buying Good Technology Turned Out to Be A Huge Plus

Analysts predict that this revenue rise comes partly from Blackberry’s acquisition of Good Technology. Both companies used to be rivals, and their main focus was making software systems that would allow enterprises and governments to manage data from employee phones and tablets.

Blackberry CEO John Chen did not specify how much of the company’s revenue increase came from the Good Technology acquisition. He did declare that Blackberry software licenses rose 43%, rounding up to $154 million in total.

The new Blackberry Priv is now ready to be pre-ordered at $699, and it’ll start shipping everywhere in the US as of November 6.

New Blackberry Priv Apps Revealed

The Internet has had an inside look at the new smartphone, which promises to be the flagship slider device and the saving grace of the Android smartphone. The center of all of this leaked intel is the new Blackberry Priv’s ‘Prodctivity Edge’ feature, which displays notifications on the curved edge display.

But more of that later. Blackberry has released a list of Android apps that will be exclusive to the Priv from the Google Play store, and among them are: MicrosoftexFAT, Notes, Contacts, Tasks, DTEK, Blackberry Calendar, Blackberry Hub, Blackberry Keyboard, Blackberry Password Keeper, Blackberry Launcher, Blackberry Camera, Blackberry Device Search and Blackberry Services.

Some of these are not new to current BB users, but they have been updated for the new device, while others are brand new. A version of the Blackberry Content Transfer application, which will allow users to transfer data saved in an old Blackberry (running on OS 10.2.1 or later) to a new one, has also been released specifically for the Priv. This app will be able to use password-protected encryption, Google Drive, the phone’s media card or a private WiFi network to transfer all data that is associated with a web-based account. All of these will be available on Blackberry World.

The New Blackberry Priv’s Productivity Edge Feature

The Blackberry Priv has a 5.4″ Oled QHD display with curved edges, as we’ve seen on the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus. The company hasn’t yet detailed what the exact function of the new blackberry’s curved edges are, but the internet may have an inkling or two.

A Crackberry forum may have some answers about the function of this feature, having released a photograph that suggests that it enables users to select an icon to get an app preview. Leaked images reveal icons for quick view for Calendar, Mail, Tasks and Contacts. So this again may be the result of the Blackberry-Samsung partnership, because this feature sounds awfully similar to Samsung’s ‘People Edge’ feature.

The Priv and Samsung Galaxy Series Are Getting More Eerily Similar

It seems this partnership has set deeper roots than expected. At this point it almost looks like the new Blackberry is the Samsung Galaxy’s closest cousin, with similar features for a steep price compared to its relatives and competitors. Hopefully the device will do the partnership proud and do well in sales, but that is yet to be determined as pre-orders go along.

Blackberry is about to release its first Android smartphone, the Blackberry Priv. It looks to be a promising grab.

This new phone is the result of an alliance between Blackberry and Samsung, bringing their forces together to make the ultimate Blackberry.

The device has an extendable physical keyboard and is equipped with top of the line hardware. It’s set to make a debut in November, and the estimated price for it is around $900, putting it right alongside the iPhone 6S and the Galaxy S6.

This installment of the Blackberry is slightly curved at the side, much like Samsung’s Galaxy Edge series. With a 5.4 inch AMOLED display of 2560×1400 QHD pixel, it gives way for vibrant colours and vivid blacks without costing you your battery. The phone’s equipped with a 64-bit, 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 processor, paired with 3GB of RAM. Its internal memory will come in 32GB, and can be extended to up to 2TB with a microSD card.

The phone’s back camera is equipped with 18 megapixels and comes with double LED flash, but its front camera has a mere 2 megapixel resolution. Its battery’s capacity is 3410 mAh for long term use.

No details have been released with regards to the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth specifics.

The Priv Is Good Competition, But Is It Worth the Price?

The Priv, interestingly enough, is said to be quite a heavy smartphone for its size. The phone, at 9.4mm, is slightly thicker than the ones in other high end smartphones, and it weighs 192g. It has Blackberry’s customary polished finish, which gives the sense that despite the likeness to the Galaxy, it still holds some of the Canadian company’s classic look.

The fact that this smartphone, despite being Blackberry’s claim back into the market, has such a steep price may be discouraging for people looking to compare it to the new Samsung Galaxy or the new iPhone, but it could be what businesspeople have been waiting for. The Blackberry looks durable, less sensitive than its competitors, but there’s no word on what it really comes down to until it is released.

The Android fusion will come with the Android 5.1 Lollipop, and it will probably have a few specific gimmicks to increase appeal to the Priv. There’s no word yet on whether or not this phone might have the Android 6 Marshmallow OS.
