Could Coffee Be the Cure for Colon Cancer? - http://clapway.com/2015/08/18/could-coffee-be-the-cure-for-colon-cancer123/

There are approximately 200,000 to 3 million cases of colon cancer in the US each year; could coffee be cure for this illness? According to Diane Stern, co-anchor of WBZ News, drinking coffee daily seems to reduce the risk of colon cancer. In fact, the Dana-Farber Institute in Boston conducted a study revealing that “those who drank four or more cups of regular (not decaf) coffee per day saw the most benefit.”

Could Coffee Really Be the Cure for Colon Cancer?

Dr. Charles Fuchs, the director of the Gastrointestinal Cancer Center at the Dana-Farber Institute, led the study which examined 950 people suffering from advanced colon cancer who also went through surgery and chemotherapy. Patients suffering from stage III colon cancer and drank four cups (460 milligrams) of coffee daily lowered their risk of recurrence by 42 percent. “Even people who regularly drank slightly less (two to three cups) per day appeared to reap some of the same benefits, just to a lesser degree,” said Alan Mozes, reporter for HealthDay.

The Results Of The Study

329 participants experienced the recurrence of colon cancer within five years of the trial and 288 patients died of the terminal illness. “The researchers found that drinking two cups of caffeinated coffee daily was associated with a reduced risk for cancer recurrence and colon cancer death. That protection was even greater for those consuming three or four cups of coffee daily,” reported Mozes. However, despite the positive results of the experiment, researchers believe telling their patients to drink coffee as treatment/cure for colon cancer would be a rash decision, especially since there is only a 35 percent chance of colon cancer recurrence after treatment.

Granted coffee still has negative health effects such as weight gain, skin wrinkles and Osteoporosis. It’s also important to note “that this study was only designed to find an association between coffee consumption and a lower risk of colon cancer recurrence or death from colon cancer. It wasn’t designed to prove a cause-and-effect relationship,” said Mozes. Past studies have shown that coffee also has protective components against other cancers; postmenopausal breast cancer, melanoma, liver cancer and advanced prostate cancer. Although doctors do not intend to prescribe coffee to cancer patients; coffee may be responsible for the decrease in cases of colon cancer in the U.S. we expect to see next year.

Could you having #sittingdisease? Now, just stop for a second and think: how many hours do you spend sitting down? - http://clapway.com/2015/07/14/sitting-disease-increases-chances-of-cancer-in-women-by-10-percent-234/

Leisure sitting is linked to a 10 percent higher risk of cancer in women — even after factors such as total physical activity and body mass are taken into account, a new study found. Researchers for the American Cancer Society studied 146,000 people — of which 69,260 were men and 77,462 were women — between 1992 and 2009. During this timeframe 18,555 men and 12,236 women were diagnosed with cancer.

Are you spending too much time sitting?

Researchers concluded that longer leisure time spent sitting was associated with a higher risk of cancer in women – notably with “multiple myeloma [bone marrow cancer], breast cancer, and ovarian cancers.”

Surprisingly, according to lead author Alpa Patel from American Cancer Society, sitting time was not associated with a considerably higher cancer risk in men. Further research is needed to solve this scientific mystery.

Stand up and walk around

Ultimately, the real problem appears to be not how much physical activity you manage to get, but rather you much time you spend sitting. According to researchers, several factors could explain the positive association between time spent sitting and cancer in women. Studies have revealed that prolonged time spent sitting, independent of physical activity, has important metabolic consequences, which may in turn trigger chronic diseases.

The sitting disease

The sitting disease, or a sedentary lifestyle, is a term used to describe people whom engage in prolonged periods of sitting or overall inactivity. It’s no news that over the past few decades the times we spend sitting has increased due to several factors, ranging from technological advancement to car-driven cultures.

Sitting down all day, however, is not as harmless as one may expect. Now, just stop for a second and think: how many hours do you spend sitting down? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 60 to 85% of the population worldwide does not engage in enough activity.

Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality as it is responsible for 6% of coronary heart disease cases, 7% of type 2 diabetes, 10% of breast cancer in women and 10% of colon cancer cases.

Change your habits

You don’t need to start training for a marathon to change your sedentary habits. Check out the Activity Pyramid Health based on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommendations to explore the innumerable ways you can integrate movement into your schedule, whether at home or in the workplace.

Ultimately to reduce the risk of cancer in women and to boost people’s health, experts argued that public health messages and guidelines should be refined to include reducing time spent sitting in addition to promoting physical activity.

Why is #coloncancer rates remaining put in these areas? - http://clapway.com/2015/07/08/deaths-by-colon-cancer-reduced-nationwide-except-key-areas-253/

Researchers are now saying that deaths caused directly from colon cancer are on a steep decline all throughout the country except in three key areas: Western Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta, and the border between Virginia and North Carolina. According to the American Cancer Society, a few of the similarities that these regions share are also the reason why this cancer hasn’t declined there. They all have high obesity rates, low education standards, and a general lack of access to medical care due to unemployment.

Colon Cancer Shouldn’t Cause This Much of a Problem

In the recent years of scientific and technological advancement, especially for healthcare, colon cancer has become one of the most preventable cancers. With regular colonoscopies, it is easy for a doctor to find and subsequently remove the pre-cancerous growths long before they become malignant. If the growth does advance, however, these procedures will still help find the tumor so that it can be removed. Surgery along with several types of effective chemotherapy drugs will effectively get rid of/control the cancer.

How bad are these areas affected?

According to Rebecca Siegel of the American Cancer Society, the death rates from colon cancer among black men in the Mississippi Delta “are not declining at all.” This can be largely attributed to the common diet in this area.

Diets that include large amounts of fat, sugar, and red meat with little fiber can contribute to getting colon cancer. Instead of the death rate lowering, from 1970-2011, the death rate from colon cancer has actually increased by 40% in these three areas. Rebecca Siegel and her team used advanced computing software to come to this conclusion, and it deeply disturbs her.

The Positive News

One positive thought that can be gained from this is now that the groups who are most at risk are identified, more efforts can be put forth to raise awareness of the disease so that, hopefully, the rate of deaths will drastically decrease. Researchers believe that due to the culture in these areas, encouraging people to talk to their neighbors about this subject will be highly effective.
