San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium Could Destroy Cancer - http://clapway.com/2015/12/04/san-antonio-breast-cancer-symposium-could-destroy-cancer123/

The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium is starting next week, and it will bring plenty of presentations of breakthrough research on cancer and chemotherapy combinations. This includes the findings of a ten-year study on the benefits of medications like herceptin, doxorubicin, docetaxel and carboplatin.

Breast Cancer - San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium

The Symposium Will Focus on the Treatment of HER2-Positive Breast Cancer

New data on the efficiency of anthracyclines will be revealed at the symposium, which will verify the safety of its use on patients with HER-2-positive brain cancer. TheS an Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium will also have an oral presentation discussing avelumab, an inhibirot from Pfizer that can help treat this specific kind of breast cancer.

Some Treatments Discussed Have Already Been Approved for Use

Several medications that will be showcased are already in use, such as denosumab, which increases bone mass in breast cancer patients who are undergoing endocrine therapy and are at risk for bone fracture.

The San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium is looking to reveal how it can help treat the cancer in addition to aiding in bone-building.

A lot of the data revealed comes from the Netherlands Cancer Registry. The Netherlands is home to few cancer treatment hospitals, and most work cohesively to try and find cures for its different strains. At least one in every eight women will suffer through breast cancer in their lifetime, and this kind of conference sheds new light on how to rid patients of this malevolent disease.

You Can Go to Mars, But It Could Give You Cancer - http://clapway.com/2015/11/10/you-can-go-to-mars-but-it-could-give-you-cancer123/

Help wanted: NASA‘s looking for new astronauts to join future Mars missions, which they still insist will be possible come 2030. Health hazards that come with the position include damage to the central nervous system, radiation that could lead to cancer, infertility, cataracts, weakened bones and muscles and extended periods of isolation.

NASA’s Efforts to Manage Health and Human Performance Risks for Space Exploration

NASA has since launched an audit named NASA’s Efforts to Manage Health and Human Performance Risks for Space Exploration, where they highlight focus on these health hazards particularly in regards to manned travel to Mars or to deep space. NASA is optimistic about resolving these issues by 2030. The audit, led by NASA Inspector General Paul Martin, NASA assures that progress is being made in regards to food and medical supplies as well as these adverse health effects. Much data has been collected from the year long mission at the ISS, and lessons learned and measures taken will optimize the first manned mission to Mars, which they have a tentative schedule for 2030.

The 54 page report details that it is NASA’s intention to host a deep-space mission to Mars had keep a presence on the Red Planet, but that many concerns must be addressed first. No American astronaut has spent more than seven months at space at a time, and the longest record held by a human is 14 months, courtesy of Russian cosmonaut Valeri Polakov.

NASA is recruiting a new generation of ‘space pioneers’

With the return of Scott Kelly from his year long journey at ISS, NASA plans to study all effects of the trip on his health thoroughly. Meanwhile the agency is recruiting a new generation of ‘space pioneers’, as there are only 47 active astronauts in the agency currently.

So all aspiring space explorers can sign up for a world of wonder by walking the surface of Mars, and a potentially extensive list of health hazards unless NASA handles this by 2030.

Researchers announced that a lab plant has been engineered to produce a new, potent #chemotherapy drug. In other words, this plant will help cure #cancer. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/12/synthetic-plant-fight-cancer-110/

THREE HURRAHS FOR SYNTHETIC BIOLOGY

Medicines comes in all shapes and sizes. There are pills and syrups and there are teas and herb blends, all to ameliorate different kinds of ails. In many cultures, alternative medicine is preferred to pharmaceuticals, and in others it is the opposite.

PHARMACEUTICAL AND NATURAL MEDICINE COMBINED

Earlier today, researchers announced that a lab plant has been engineered to produce a new, potent chemotherapy drug. The drug was initially harvested from an endangered Himalayan plant, and this new organism may provide an abundant supply of the anti-cancer drug, thus making it easier for chemists to experiment and eventually create the most safe and effective version of the drug. It has been a trend as of late for drugmakers to combine pharmaceuticals with plants to devise new drugs, but many plants with countless benefits are endangered.

One of them is the one our lab plant is made in the image of, the Himalayan mayapple. It’s scientific name is Podophyllum hexandrum, and the stubby, leafy plant was once the main source of podophyllotoxin. Podophyllotoxin is a cytotoxin particle that makes up one of the building blocks for the anticancer drug Etoposide. This drug has been on the US market since 1983, and it’s used to treat dozens of varying cancers including lymphoma and lung cancer. Since the Himalayan mayapple is an endangered plant, the American mayapple has been used to extract this cytotoxin, but this version grows slowly and produces very small quantities of the compound.

HOW THE COMPOUND IS MADE

Devising the lab plant was no easy task. Researchers had quite a bit of time trying to decipher how and when the compound is synthesized in the plant, and they came to the conclusion that it is not always present in the plants. Elizabeth Sattely, chemical engineer at Stanford University and leading researcher of the research effort, reveals that it is only when the leaves are wounded that the molecule is made, that it is a response to injury.

This new discovery may give drug making companies and suppliers all over the world a solid and abundant supply of cancer-fighting drugs, and it may lead to better engineered drugs that could work even more efficiently against more strains of cancer.

On Thursday, reports of the very first #3D-printed #titaniumsternum and rib cage hit the news. Among many applications are the needs of #cancer patients. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/12/cancer-patient-first-3d-printed-ribs-110/

Ten years ago the idea of 3D printing hadn’t even crossed the minds of most people but now we’re already seeing consumer-grade 3D printers cheap enough to be purchased by everyday people. And on Thursday, reports of the very first 3D-printed titanium sternum and rib cage hit the news.

ADDING TO THE LIST OF 3D-PRINTED MEDICAL IMPLANTS

A 3D-printed rib cage is certainly a first, but it’s also certainly not the first 3D-printed medical implant. There have been skulls, jaws, spinal fusions, vertebrae, heel, and a bunch of other impressive implants that have been printed and promptly placed inside other human beings to great success.

SEE ALSO: RESEARCHERS HAVE CREATED A 3D MILLIPEDE AVATAR

The implant that the Spanish patient received was the first of its kind. The patient suffered from a chest wall sarcoma, and part of the cancer treatment involved having his sternum and part of his rib cage removed. Rather than using a traditional method, which would need to eventually be replaced as the flat plate implant would begin to loosen, the patient’s surgical team opted for a solution that was not only a little more fancy, but more effective too.

HOW THE PROCEDURE WAS DONE

Part of the magic involves creating a 3D-printed sternum and rib cage that could closely model the patient’s own anatomy. In order to do this, the surgical team turned to Anatomics, a company well versed in 3D printing, implants, and other biomedical technology. Anatomics used CT scans in order to mirror the patient’s chest wall and create the appropriate implants.

During surgery prep, Anatomics used a $1.3 million electron-beam printer to create the titanium implants in record time. The operation was considered a success, and after 12 days of recovery in the hospital, the patient was able to go home. So far the patient has responded well to the surgery.

MORE TO COME

3D printing has made a ton of headway in low-cost biomedical solutions for patients that would otherwise spend thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills. So far doctors are able to print prosthetics hands for $100, and prosthetic feet for just $15. 3D printing still has a long way to go, but things are looking good so far.

Scientists have been working with #mice to put a stop to #metastasis, which causes the spread of #cancer cells in a patient"s body. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/11/mice-metastasis-cancer123/

Once cancer cells spread throughout the body, in a process known as metastasis, the mortality rate for cancer patients greatly increases. For this reason, scientists have been working tirelessly to combat the issue. Now, researchers at the University of Michigan in the Department of Biomedical Engineering may have found the solution: an implantable device that can detect metastasis early.

Preventing Metastasis in Patients

Preventing metastasis is key in order to grant a cancer patient a longer life. This is difficult to do – even with effective treatment – because the process generally goes unnoticed until after it has already spread cancer cells to other parts of the body. The new device, however, allows doctors to identify metastasis sooner, which, in turn, will cause treatments to also become more effective.

How this device works

The device, measuring 5mm in diameter, is created from a biosynthetic substance that has already been approved by the FDA. It essentially acts as a sponge that soaks up cancer cells in the tissue it is implanted in. Simultaneously, it functions as a beacon for immune cells, which flock to the device. As a result, cancer cells naturally follow and end up attaching themselves to the implant, along with the immune cells. Not only does this help with the early detection of metastasis, it is also able to prevent the spread of cancer by actually capturing the cancerous cells.

Testing on mice

So far, tests conducted on mice have shown promising results, although human trials have yet to begin. As part of the clinical study, the device was implanted into mice with breast cancer, and within two weeks, all the cancer cells had moved to the implant and stopped multiplying. Given the positive test results, the researchers are optimistic that the new technology will have the same impact on humans.

It’s always been a mystery why completely #healthy people are diagnosed with #cancer at some point in life. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/10/liquid-biopsy-cancer123/

It’s always been a mystery why completely healthy people are diagnosed with cancer at some point in life; people who have never smoked a cigarette can contract lung cancer, and children are frequently diagnosed with pancreatic cancer or leukemia. Pathway Genomics, infamous for pushing boundaries when it comes to genetic testing, has just developed a liquid biopsy that can detect cancer DNA in the blood of healthy men, women and children.

How Does the Test Work?

The test uses gene sequencing technology to spot traces of DNA related to different cancers in screen blood samples. To be precise, it looks at 96 genetic markers associated with breast, ovarian, lung, colon and melanoma cancers – ones that have specific treatment regimens and are well known. Many cancer diagnosis companies have been working on these tests in order to research factors such as fetal anomalies in the event early stages of carcinomas are detected in expectant mothers. One of these companies, Cowen and Co., estimates that the expenses on DNA blood testing for cancer screenings will surpass $10 billion a year by the end of the decade.

While this biopsy may screen for early signs of cancers in the blood, there is heavy debate on just how much genetic information should be made available if it is not yet clear how the tests can ameliorate health. The Walgreens vs. Pathway altercation – when the pharmacy withdrew the company’s genetic testing kits fearing patients might take action into their own hands before fully understanding the results – is a definitive example of this.

Still A Ways to Go

The discoveries still must undergo additional studies to prove that they can help people beat cancer via early detection, and doctors, as well as potential distributors, will want a clear report on its accuracy. Dr. Keith Stewart, head oncologist at the Center for Individualized Medicine at Mayo Clinic, comments that information should be available regarding the rate of false positives that may cause needless alarm, as well as false negatives that would provide false security.

Pathway has designed an additional test to detect the efficacy of a specific treatment in a person already diagnosed with cancer, and if developments are followed closely, we may see great improvements in the prevention, detection and treatment of this threatening condition.

E-cigarettes are reported as 95% healthier than actual cigarettes, but the #CenterofEnvironmentalHealthinCalifornia will take sue many #E-cigarettes. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/05/e-cigarettes-cancerous-110/

VAPING ISN’T AS SAFE AS YOU THINK

E-cigarettes have been reported as 95% healthier than actual cigarettes, but the Center of Environmental Health in California is about to take legal action against some of the best known brands of these substitute cigarettes after some testing on the toxic chemicals in them.

A study by the CEH finds that 90% of e-cigarette companies produce at least one brand that produced high levels of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, both of which cause cancer, birth defects and reduced fertility. The figures show that 50 of 97 products studied contain both of these components in levels that violated the California safety standard, even in the nicotine-free versions of the products. Some of these exceeded the standard by 10 times, and seven of them exceeded it by 100 times.

A CALL TO ACTION

This incident has caused e-cigarette use to come under question, even inspiring an initiative to ban them despite the fact that e-cigarettes remain a healthier alternative to actual cigarettes. While supporters claim that e-cigarettes facilitate quitting, the fact that they contain these cancer-inducing chemicals cannot be ignored. Executive director of CEH, Michael Green, says that the tobacco industry has campaigned many lies about cigarettes, and that e-cigarette companies are now doing the same, and that their studies ineffably show that vaping is not as safe as it has been broadcast. In fact, despite the fact that vaping doesn’t include the inhalation of smoke, they still contribute to the risk of spreading of nicotine from secondhand smoke. Some products studied even contained toxic metals in the vapor.

The CEH is invoking California’s consumer protection law, and this is the second time they’ve commenced legal confrontation with e-cigarette companies. Previously, they’ve engaged in legal confrontation to warn users about the nicotine risks in their products.

FDA REGULATIONS FOR E-CIGARETTES PENDING

Over a year ago, the Food and Drug Administration made a ruling to allow e-cigarettes to be as regulated as traditional tobacco products, but said ruling is still winding its way through the approval process. This latest ordeal has inspired many California counties to implement a smoking ban on these products, both aiding CEH and bringing awareness to citizens about the dangers of e-cigarettes.

Much remains unclear about #prostatecancer, but raising awareness and scheduling a screening for this #cancer is #commonsense. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/03/prostate-cancer-the-things-to-know-110/

September is prostate cancer awareness month. While there’s a lot that still remains unclear about the second most common form of cancer for men, gaining awareness and getting screened for this disease is a no-brainer.

WHAT IS PROSTATE CANCER, AND HOW DOES IT AFFECT MEN?

Prostate cancer is caused by the abnormal growth of cells in the prostate gland, and is most commonly called an adenocarcinoma. It is the second largest type of cancer seen in men, after skin cancer. About 1 in every 7 men is diagnosed with prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that 2015 will see 220,800 new cases of this disease. Prostate cancer is mostly seen in older men, with an average diagnosis age of 66. Though, it is the second leading cause of cancer death in men (first is lung cancer), the survival rates for men with prostate cancer is quite high. The 5-year survival rate for this cancer is 100%, and the 15-year rate is still 94%, which are relatively good odds.

LESS THAN ONE-THIRD OF PROSTATE CANCER DIAGNOSES REQUIRE TREATMENT

A longitudinal study conducted among older men with low-risk prostate cancer revealed that most cases do not require treatment. The study followed up with 1298 men diagnosed with prostate cancer for a period ranging from less than a year to 18 years. They found that men diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer had a low chance of dying due to cancer; death in such men is far more likely due to other causes, like heart disease. Thus monitoring, rather than treatment, is the best option for most men diagnosed with this cancer.

MONITORING REQUIRES HEALTH SCREENINGS

Prostate cancer isn’t always a death sentence, and there’s plenty that can be done to better deal with a positive diagnosis. Other than a general awareness of risk factors and symptoms, health care professionals urge men to get the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test. It is a simple blood test that gives an indication of the risk for prostate cancer. Though it isn’t definitive, it could be meaningful when combined with risk factors like age, family and medical history.

Compared to women, men are less likely to seek medical consultation. It is therefore important to spread the word about prostate cancer, especially because it is fairly manageable once detected soon enough.

Scientists Find How to Turn off Cancer Switch #health #cancer #breastcancer - http://clapway.com/2015/08/26/scientists-cancer-switch123/

In a groundbreaking study, scientists have unearthed how to put the brakes on cancer, and allow the growth of healthy tissue. Published in Nature Cell Biology, this research is expected to spur therapies that could stall or even reverse cancer damage.

Explore some of the other strategies to fight cancer

In cancer, cells grow without any control

The normal cell cycle is a heavily controlled mechanism; cells grow up to a certain point, perform their functions and die to make way for new cells. This mechanism has multiple checkpoints so that the malfunction of any one doesn’t hamper the entire process. However, when this systematic control of cell life-and-death is lost, cells divide rapidly and uncontrollably, leading to the development of tumors. Cancerous tumors can invade other tissues by using the blood and the lymphatic system. Many scientists have been baffled by these abnormal cells and how they manage to escape the body’s own cancer-fighting sentinels. Therefore, a lot of work has been devoted to the possibility of endogenous factors reversing the growth of tumors.

Scientists Find How to Turn off Cancer Switch - Clapway

Cancer can be reversed by activating connection between a cell glue and a microprocessor

Adhesion molecules have long thought to be only involved in keeping the cells glued together. But, their malfunction plays a major role in the growth of cancer. When cells grow enough to make contacts with each other using adhesion molecules, they trigger the end of the cell-growth cycle. This trigger is warped in cancers and the study focused on reigniting it using molecules called microRNAs. When they removed microRNAs from cell, they discovered that they could turn on cancer. As such, scientists predicted that loading cells with these regulatory microRNAs would have the reverse effect by turning off the cancerous process. They verified it by studying the effects of a protein called PLEKHA7 that shut off cell growth and was produced only when microRNAs were delivered to cells.

How effective is the new strategy of shutting off cancer?

The study was carried out using human cells of aggressive forms of breast and bladder cancer. While this is a promising angle, it might take studies beyond the cellular level to understand the ramifications as a whole. Often, shutting off one cancerous mechanism may not be enough to stop cancer. But novel perspectives such as this could one day lead to a working model for beating cancer.

Drug Increases Ovarian Cancer Survival Rates - #ovariancancer #cancer #hypertension http://clapway.com/2015/08/25/drug-ovarian-cancer-survival-rates212/

A new study has found that ovarian cancer patients taking beta blocker medications for heart disease had better survival rates than those who didn’t.

HOW THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED

The research, a retrospective study of the health records of 1,425 women who had undergone ovarian cancer treatment between 2000 and 2010, was led by Dr. Anil Sood of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. 269 of the women whose records were researched took beta blockers of two kinds: a nonselective beta antagonist (NSBB) and a beta-1-adrenergic receptor selective agent (SBB).

THE RESULTS

Of the patients who took the NSBB, the median survival rate was 94.9 months and the same median rate was 38 months in the patients that took SBB, indicating that NSBB has some anti-ovarian cancer properties. Of those patients with hypertension, the ones who took NSBB had a median rate of 90 months; the others that took SBB had a median rate of 38.2.

WHAT ARE BETA BLOCKERS?

Beta blockers are used often to help patients with heart issues like hypertension, and they can be used to treat the body’s physical response to stress, which can make a heart beat rapidly.

“Beta-blockers treat a variety of conditions, such as heart disease, high-blood pressure, glaucoma and migraines. They target a receptor protein in heart muscle that causes the heart to beat harder and faster when activated by stress hormones,” Sood said in a statement to the press.

The property of beta blockers that could be helping the ovarian cancer patients, according to researchers, is the way that the drugs protect stress pathways that have a role in the spread and growth of tumors. “Our research has shown that the same stress mechanisms impact ovarian cancer progression, so these drugs could play a new role in cancer treatment,” said Sood.

IMPLICATIONS OF THE STUDY

According to the press release, the data from the study will be used to make “prospective, randomized clinical trials” that further measure the effects of NSBBs on patients. “[The study] also builds on the mounting evidence that beta-blockers may become a key treatment component for many patients in the future,” said Sood.

The entire study can be read in the journal, CANCER.

%Public Health England published a report proving #e-cigarettes 95 percent less hazardous than regular, "normal" #cigarettes; recommends them as quitting aid.% - http://clapway.com/2015/08/22/e-cigarettes-95-percent-less-harmful-than-smoking-110/

Public Health England, an agency of the British Department of Health, published a report which describes e-cigarettes as 95 percent less hazardous than the regular, “normal” cigarettes and recommends them as a quitting aid.

“Best estimates show e-cigarettes are 95% less harmful to your health than normal cigarettes and when supported by a smoking cessation service, help most smokers to quit tobacco altogether,” Public Health England Chief Executive, Duncan Selbie, says while one of the study’s authors, Peter Hajek, professor at the Queen Mary University adds:

“My reading of the evidence is that smokers who switch to vaping remove almost all the risks smoking poses to their health.”

E-CIGARETTES DO NOT LEAD THE MASSES TO SMOKING

Anti-smoking activists and public health officials do not believe in vaping as a method for smokers to quit their unhealthy habit and believe that e-cigarettes are making smoking seem glamorous luring non-smokers into nicotine addiction.

The report though says that almost all of the 2,600,000 adults who use e-cigarettes in Great Britain used to be smokers and that most of them are using their devices in order to quit. In addition, less than 1% of adults and less than 1% of teenagers have become regular e-cig users without ever being smokers in the past.

In other words, as in the United States, smoking rates in the U.K. have decreased as vaping rates have risen and “there is no evidence so far that e-cigarettes are acting as a route into smoking for children or non-smokers.”

PHE’s report calculates that 44.8 percent of the population in Great Britain have not realized that e-cigarettes are less harmful than smoking. This number is quite small compared to the 65 percent of Americans who, according to a Reuters poll, believe that e-smoking is either worse than regular smoking or don’t know.

Related Post: Are E-Cigarettes Bad for Your Health?

Misleading pronouncements by anti-smoking organizations and public health agencies about vaping have made the masses believe that e-cigarettes may be, in fact, more dangerous than smoking. For example, CDC Director Tom Frieden says that “When it comes to tobacco products we really have to assume they’re dangerous until they’re proven safe, rather than the other way around.” However, e-cigarettes do not contain any tobacco at all.

E-CIGARETTES ARE NOT RISK FREE

This kind of misinformation may lead smokers to serious behaviors, making them believe that e-cigs are, at least, as harmful as normal cigarettes. This could keep million of smokers from quitting.

Kevin Fenton, PHE’s director of health and wellbeing, says:

“E-cigarettes are not completely risk-free, but when compared to smoking, evidence shows they carry just a fraction of the harm. The problem is people increasingly think they are at least as harmful, and this may be keeping millions of smokers from quitting,”

Ann McNeill, professor of psychiatry, psychology, and neuroscience at King’s College London, who co-authored the study adds that in her view smokers should try vaping and vapers should stop smoking entirely, in order to prove that e-cigarettes could change everything in public health.

Find out if this #LungCancer #Drug can save lives? - http://clapway.com/2015/08/21/new-genentech-trial-targets-multiple-cancers-by-attacking-a-single-gene-342/

In an interesting new trial funded by Genentech, vemurafenib, a skin cancer drug showed positive results in certain kinds of lung cancer and some other malignancies. The trial was based on a new concept of targeting gene mutations common to many cancers.

Current cancer therapies are usually specific to the type of cancer

Most clinical trials test the effect of the drug on a single type of cancer. Lately, advances in gene therapy made it possible to study cancer at its most fundamental level⎯genes. Scientists believe that although cancers may show organ heterogeneity, many of their molecular mechanisms have common genetic origins. For example, a genetic mutation called the BRAF V 600 is found to be present in many cancers.

BRAF is gene that makes the protein B-Raf, which when functioning properly prepares a cell for its death. An aberration in this mechanism sends the cell life-and-death cycle askew, leading to the development of cancer.

The Genentech clinical trial design

The clinical trial, also called the “basket” trial, attempted to test vemurafenib⎯a drug already approved for the treatment of melanomas showing the BRAF mutation⎯in other cancers with the same gene defect. Vemurafenib was developed by Plexxikon and marketed by Genentech under the name Zelboraf. A total of 122 patients with BRAFV 600 mutation-positive, non-melanoma cancers were enrolled in this open-label clinical trial. At the end of the study they were testes on the basis of response to cancer, survival without disease progression, and overall survival.

The clinical trial yielded mixed results

The study tested the drug effects on seven types of tumors. Among them, non-small-cell lung cancer showed a high response rate of 42%; the median survival time before progression of the disease was 7.3 months. Another group of cancer-like conditions⎯Erdheim–Chester disease or Langerhans’-cell histiocytosis⎯showed a 43% response rate and median treatment time of 5.9 months, with no one showing disease progression during this period. There were some anecdotal results with anaplastic thyroid cancer, salivary-duct cancer, ovarian cancer, and colorectal cancer; not much confidence can be placed on these results.

This study is a proof-of-concept that ushers in an era of molecular medicine. Though the results aren’t enough to yield an approval, this is a good starting point.

FDA Approves New Skin Cancer Drug - http://clapway.com/2015/07/25/fda-approves-new-skin-cancer-drug567/

Some Basic Info about skin cancer

It seems that every day there are some advancements being made in medicine, and more and more of them seem to be related to treating or curing cancer.

Today, more specifically, skin cancer and the drug that was approved today by the FDA have been making headlines. Currently, the Skin Cancer Foundation said that melanoma kills nearly 10,000 people every year and almost fifteen times that much are diagnosed every year as well.

Skin cancer is not incurable, but if caught late it can spread throughout the body. Then, the disease may reach a place where it becomes inoperable.

The skin cancer drug’s fda announcement

The press release was made available yesterday afternoon by Novartis, mostly known for their new drug for heart disease recently approved by the FDA. The new skin cancer drug is called Odomzo, and it is now available for public consumption.
Novartis is a healthcare company based in Switzerland that focuses part of its efforts on pharmaceuticals. The new skin cancer drug is the newest pharmaceutical released by their company.

the drug comes with a small catch, though

The new skin cancer drug is, according to the FDA a sonidegib, which will help treat patients with melanoma that have come back after treatment and those not approved for surgery or therapy. The thing is that the drug will be used for the basal cell carcinoma in the advance part of the illness.

But the benefit is that when taken daily, the new skin cancer drug should help stop the spreading of the disease quite a bit for patients. Trials showed that the small group of testers had tumors that grew smaller and smaller when taking the new skin cancer drug, and some even went away completely.

Keep in mind, some of the side effects are not great – you will still lose hair and such, but one major concern is that there may be some muscle tissue problems that form as a result of the new skin cancer drug. FDA Approves New Skin Cancer Drug

Study suggests a connection between wireless devices and cancer - http://clapway.com/2015/07/25/study-suggests-a-connection-between-wireless-devices-and-cancer678/

A bit of Background for the connection

Cancer has always been very concerning in and of itself, especially when it is afflicting those you know and around you. This is why the WHO organized the International Agency for Research on Cancer to help find causes, cures, and treatment for cancer.

At a certain point in time in May 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified RFR, or radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, as a possible carcinogen to people. This was due to the rising concern of the negative health effects from continual exposure to RFR via wireless devices, thereby beginning the connection between wireless devices and cancer.

Research suggested that these RFR might have long-term effects and may increase the risk for cancer. Although the evidence for the research was judged to be inadequate, new research suggests that might have been a call made too soon.

The connection between wireless devices and cancer

A review study that was published in the Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine on the 7th of this month took on the task of looking over that connection between wireless devices and cancer. The press release for the research said that the study suggested a metabolic imbalance caused by the radiation from wireless devices could be a factor for many health risks.

The study goes on to explore the effects of low radiofrequency radiation has on the metabolism and has shown some signs of what is called oxidative stress. The presence of this type of stress may help to explain a number of illnesses that can arise after being exposed to RFR for too long.

What does this mean?

With all the data of the study about the connection between wireless devices and cancer, researchers of the study have concluded that there is a connection between the two. The exposure to low RFR acts as a danger to living cells that cause oxidative stress to arise, which then can lead to numerous health ailments.

As a result of the connection between wireless devices and cancer, the researchers also asked the public to be leery of using said devices for reasons of health concerns. Only more research can be reveal if the truths be behind concerns are set in stone.

Cost of Cancer Drugs Adversely Affecting Cancer Patients - http://clapway.com/2015/07/24/cost-of-cancer-drugs-adversely-affecting-cancer-patients654/

The Journal of Economic Perspectives published a study that found the costs associated with cancer drugs have increased by $8,500 a year over the last 15 years.

Americans have a 1 in 3 chance of developing cancer within their lifetimes

A study produced by the Duke Clinical Research Institute attempted to understand the impact of health care related expenses on the treatment and well-being of insured cancer patients who requested copayment assistance.

They found that among 254 participants 42% suffered from significant financial burdens that required them to cut back on spending in categories including leisure, food, and clothing. 46% of those surveyed used savings to cover some of the out-of-pocket expenses. In an attempt to minimize the costs associated with drugs used during cancer treatment 20% took less than the amount they were prescribed.

The high price of cancer drugs creates different outcomes based on economic status.

Recommendations from Experts on Pharmaceutical Reform

Dr. Ayalew Tefferi, a hematologist at Mayo Clinic says, “High cancer-drug prices are affecting the care of patients with cancer and our health care system.”

Tefferi and 117 of his colleagues agreed on seven recommendations to address the unfair costs associated with cancer drugs. The Mayo Clinic Proceedings published these recommendations.

One of those recommendations is to allow cancer drugs to be imported across the border for personal use. Prices in Canada are about half the prices in the U.S.

Additional recommendations include allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, passing legislation to inhibit drug companies from delaying access to generic drugs, and creating a post-U.S. FDA drug approval review mechanism to offer fair pricing for new treatments based on value to patients. A comprehensive list of all the recommendations may be found here.

Calling for Action

Tefferi and his colleagues are in support of a petitionon change.org that calls on the President, the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), and Members of the United States Congress to implement their suggestions. The petition accurately states that exorbitant prices of cancer drugs are decreasing the life span of patients who cannot afford treatment.

The petition has a goal of 15,000 signatures and has, as of now, collected just under 14,000 signatures.

Could #marijuana really help effects that come with #autism? - http://clapway.com/2015/07/20/can-medical-marijuana-ease-severe-side-effects-of-autism-221/

Two months ago, the Medical Marijuana Review Panel has made their case that marijuana might be able to ease severe side effects of autism and the motion seems to be now considered for approval in Michigan.

Parents Want to Treat Children with Marijuana

The fact that marijuana can relieve the side effects of other diseases, such as glaucoma, cancer, HIV or hepatitis C is already known. But will it be approved for autism, as well?

Even if there have been opinions against the use of marijuana, when it comes to autistic children, quite a large number of parents are beginning to use medical marijuana to help their kids deal with the severe symptoms whatever disorder or disease they have might bring.

Marijuana Should Be Used for Aggressive Behaviors, Doctors Say

In accordance with the advice given by many doctors, it seems that medical marijuana should only be used for aggressive behaviors and meltdowns in autistic children. However, there are many parents who are already treating their children with this plant.

According to their declarations, the kids managed to achieve a more normal life since they started the treatment with marijuana.

The Marijuana Approval Meeting Postponed

A meeting to decide if marijuana should be accepted as part of the autism treatment was supposed to happen today. However, the Michigan Medical Marijuana Review Panel postponed action Monday in order to allow the members to read the research. They will meet again on 31st of July.

The members have information regarding both sides of the problem: those who proposed medical marijuana as a treatment for autism stated that the oil extracted from it can control the behavior of autistic persons. However, their opponents strongly believe that there is not enough information that sustains this affirmation, considering that marijuana is not helping people with autism.

The Panel Will Make a Recommendation in Favor or Against

There are more people who are in favor of allowing medical marijuana as part of the autism treatment. However, the decision is in the hands of the director of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Until this moment, in Michigan, medical marijuana can be used against the side effects of cancer, glaucoma, HIV, hepatitis C and a few other conditions. But in order to know id autism can be treated with this plant, we have to wait until the end of July.

This #medical #nightmare has to be put to a stop. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/19/dr-abracadabra-fake-doctors-strike-again-234/

While most health providers are legitimate, there are many fake doctors that are completely bogus. Unaccredited, unregulated ‘phony’ doctors, are criminal scammers for the most part, who cold-bloodedly exploit the credulity and desperation of the most vulnerable people in society: terminal patients.

Fake doctors are in vogue

Dr. Abracadabra- Fake doctors strike again -- ClapwayIndeed, fake medical degrees are so prolific that have become an “urgent national problem.” If twenty-five years ago, a Congressional committee calculated that there were over 5,000 fake doctors in the United States, just imagine how many more there are now. People have died because of these mockups. Something must change.

Alleged chemist arrested in California

The latest incident was reported in California. Here, an alleged chemist who claimed he could treat cancer with alternative medicine scammed a mother out of thousands of dollars, police say. According to news reports, the victim identified as Fern was upset to witness somebody preying on cancer patients “who are desperate to live”.

The battle of a cancer patient

Fern has been battling breast cancer for seven years. Despite years of chemotherapy, the cancer spread. She decided to turn to natural treatments and in 2009 found a website promoting Vincent Gammill’s “Natural Oncology Institute”. It was her last resort, she thought. She believed the doctor had answers to her problems, but he didn’t. Gammill was no guru.

The first visit cost her $2,000. She was given various prescriptions that were all expired and had to listen to comments “that didn’t make any sense”.

After her visit, the mother of two contacted the police. “He robbed me of my money, of my time. It was three days driving up, I was away from my children and my family,” Fern told 6abc Action News.

It turned out that Gammill had no formal education beyond high school. In his home, investigators found laboratory equipment and bottles labeled corrosive and poison, along with over 25,000 prescription pills, including morphine, Ambien, steroids and Mexican and Russian drugs.

The Big Lie

The “Natural Oncology Institute” is still online. Here we read that Gammill became well known in international clinics “for the effectiveness of certain cancer vaccines he developed”. His aim was to create a non-profit where “cancer patients could get a honest answers from someone who knew both conventional and alternative medicine without sizing up their wallet”. Right.

Gammill, 69, who was arrested on July 9, is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court on Aug. 31.

Over the years, organisations such as the California medical board has investigated a mounting number of people pretending to be doctors and offering risky treatments, including a San Francisco man who performed liposuction while smoking a cigar and a San Diego woman who sickened a patient with lengthy IV infusion treatments.

Fake doctors and unlicensed physicians are everywhere in the US. Check out this page for more stories. Have you ever met a bunch of fake doctors? Share your experiences in the comments section below.

Could you having #sittingdisease? Now, just stop for a second and think: how many hours do you spend sitting down? - http://clapway.com/2015/07/14/sitting-disease-increases-chances-of-cancer-in-women-by-10-percent-234/

Leisure sitting is linked to a 10 percent higher risk of cancer in women — even after factors such as total physical activity and body mass are taken into account, a new study found. Researchers for the American Cancer Society studied 146,000 people — of which 69,260 were men and 77,462 were women — between 1992 and 2009. During this timeframe 18,555 men and 12,236 women were diagnosed with cancer.

Are you spending too much time sitting?

Researchers concluded that longer leisure time spent sitting was associated with a higher risk of cancer in women – notably with “multiple myeloma [bone marrow cancer], breast cancer, and ovarian cancers.”

Surprisingly, according to lead author Alpa Patel from American Cancer Society, sitting time was not associated with a considerably higher cancer risk in men. Further research is needed to solve this scientific mystery.

Stand up and walk around

Ultimately, the real problem appears to be not how much physical activity you manage to get, but rather you much time you spend sitting. According to researchers, several factors could explain the positive association between time spent sitting and cancer in women. Studies have revealed that prolonged time spent sitting, independent of physical activity, has important metabolic consequences, which may in turn trigger chronic diseases.

The sitting disease

The sitting disease, or a sedentary lifestyle, is a term used to describe people whom engage in prolonged periods of sitting or overall inactivity. It’s no news that over the past few decades the times we spend sitting has increased due to several factors, ranging from technological advancement to car-driven cultures.

Sitting down all day, however, is not as harmless as one may expect. Now, just stop for a second and think: how many hours do you spend sitting down? According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 60 to 85% of the population worldwide does not engage in enough activity.

Physical inactivity is the fourth leading risk factor for global mortality as it is responsible for 6% of coronary heart disease cases, 7% of type 2 diabetes, 10% of breast cancer in women and 10% of colon cancer cases.

You don’t need to start training for a marathon to change your sedentary habits. Check out the Activity Pyramid Health based on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services recommendations to explore the innumerable ways you can integrate movement into your schedule, whether at home or in the workplace.

Ultimately to reduce the risk of cancer in women and to boost people’s health, experts argued that public health messages and guidelines should be refined to include reducing time spent sitting in addition to promoting physical activity.

"Sitting Disease" Increases Chances of Cancer in Women by 10 Percent

There might be another use for that #prenatal #bloodwork. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/14/prenatal-blood-tests-find-cancer-in-moms-to-be-235/

In the past decade, cancer became one of the most dangerous diseases, being part of the leading causes of death. There is no doubt that just hearing the word “cancer” scares all people, no matter their age.

This disease can appear in different parts of the body, for a variety of reasons. What happens is that abnormal cells divide without any control, invading other tissues of the body. Afterwards, it spreads to the whole body through blood and lymph system.

Cancer can affect both men and women. According to specialists, people who have family members diagnosed with cancer are more prone to have the disease, as well.

Prevent Cancer Through a Healthy Lifestyle

However, even if there is cancer history in a family, the disease can be prevented through periodic screening and, of course by choosing a healthy lifestyle. Also, there are some vaccines available, which are meant to prevent cancer.

Recently, a new discovery regarding cancer has been made. It seems that cancer can be spotted in moms-to-be through the prenatal blood tests that they have to take.

Early Cancer Can Be Detected through Prenatal Blood Tests

These tests are created to help the pregnant women find out if there is any fetal distress or abnormal developments such as Down syndrome. This way, any chromosomal disorders, or other problems found can be prevented. In addition to this information, it seems that prenatal blood tests can now help determine if a pregnant woman is suffering from cancer.

According to a study, published in the Journal of American Medical Association, non-invasive prenatal blood tests are now able to discover the existence of cancer in pregnant women, even before these mothers are aware of any symptoms or get tested.

Cancer Spotted Without Having Symptoms

According to the authors of the study, the principle behind it is that “liquid biopsy” can detect cancer, even at its earliest stage. This can only mean that cancer can be spotted even without any of the usual symptoms.

This research was conducted with the help of more than 100,000 women, who were tested and analyzed over a period of more than three years.

Taking care of yourself is one way, but screening should never be neglected. Check out the Clapway Trends review of this health lover’s favorite:
