How a hot #fat implant might be to to reduce your #weight - http://clapway.com/2015/08/23/hot-fat-implants-to-reduce-weight-422/

HOW HOT FAT MAKES AN APPEARANCE

In recent news, scientists at the University of Berkeley have developed a way to encourage the growth of hot fat (also known as “brown fat”) that aids in reducing weight and low blood sugar in mice subjects. The study is available to read online in the Diabetes journal.

In the University of Berkeley’s press release made available by the university, the hot fat implant was shown to produce the favorable results mentioned in the beginning, involving the use of the fat to help burn the calories. The implications of this study have some promising potential, according to one of the researchers of the study, Kevin Tharp, a student in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and Toxicology.

FURTHER ILLUMINATION ON THE RESEARCH

Before, what was known about brown fat was that it disappeared as one grew older, but can still be found in certain areas of the body in adults. According to him, the potential uses for the hot fat implant could be applied to a great deal of things such as being used for therapy.

In the mice tested on for the study, not only has the hot fat had a positive impact on the mice’s metabolism and health, but it also helps them produce heat. This is evident in a thermograph when viewing a place with no implant in the mice, and the opposite side of the mice where the hot fat implant does exist. The latter was shown to have a warmer temperature than the former.

HOW THE IMPLANT CAME TO BE

When a body is cold, a flip happens and more food is usually eaten. So to explore the hot fat research more, researchers toyed with the idea of promoting more growth of hot fat without the cold temperatures that would negate the effects of it.

Researchers took on the task of experimenting with stem cells in a soft 3D mesh of hydrogel and other things that would allow the stem cells to grow into fat instead of bone. After the conversion, they placed the new fat into the mice genetically engineered with an enzyme from fireflies that illuminate in order to track better. The now known increase in body temperature was recorded in the initial observations and in the accompanying high-fat diet gained only half as much weight as those without the implants did and had lower blood sugar.

With the promising results of the hot fat in mice, researchers are excited to see what the effects would be like on humans. But also how it can change the health concerns surrounding obesity and its related afflictions to something that is not so pressing or not so much a concern.

Hacking the Hospira Pump is Real, FDA says - http://clapway.com/2015/08/01/hacking-the-hospira-pump-is-real-fda-says456/

Catching Up With Some Small talk

Medical care has always been a serious topic and an area of concern. Many court cases arise from the lack of professional courtesy, or due to operations that were unnecessary. With that being said, we cannot argue that the advancements in the medical field are astounding and ingenious at times, especially when thinking back to a century when penicillin, a heart monitor, or even the Hospira Pump didn’t exist.

The surprise announcement about hacking the hospira pump

Hacking the Hospira Pump is Real, FDA says - clapway

It is very surprising to hear that the US Department of Homeland Security issued a warning to the public, revealing that Hospira’s Symbiq medication pumps, or computerized pumps used to deliver drugs, can be hacked remotely. The concerning news was discovered by a white hat (or ethical) hacker while checking the system out. According to the Food and Drug Administration, this is the first instance it has warned health care providers and caregivers to stop using a product due to a cybersecurity risk.

Inevitable Results

But what exactly is the main concern regarding the Hospira hack? The biggest worry is that the security breach gives someone the opportunity to manipulate the system. Because the device can be potentially remotely controlled, an intruder essentially has the power to change the amount of medication a patient receives. Although, newer pumps have additional protection against these potential hacks, the FDA suggests that health care providers disconnect them and update drug libraries manually. However, this method also has its drawbacks, as it is prone to human errors. The process is also much more labor intensive and may not be entirely feasible.

Overpriced Cancer Drugs a Hot Topic in Medical Community - http://clapway.com/2015/07/26/overpriced-cancer-drugs-a-hot-topic-in-medical-community425/

The concern about overpriced cancer drugs

Since cancer was discovered by humans, the search for suitable ways of treatments has been a hard one. Even more hard sought is a possible cure.

However, for now, many are focused on the topic of overpriced cancer drugs. The questions of affordability come to mind in the face of rising prices, especially for those who could barely afford the cancer treatments in the first place.

The journal article on the concern

In response to the continually overpriced cancer drugs in the medical practice, a group of doctors came together to publish a piece in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings recently. In the piece, the doctors expressed their concern that the high costs for the drug treatments affect patient care, in helping them to battle cancer or treat it.

Among the one hundred and eighteen doctors that made up the group of people that expressed concern over the overpriced cancer drugs was Dr. Ayalew Tefferi of the Mayo Clinic. His work consists of working with leukemia patients, among other things.

To get a better idea of the issue on the high costs of the cancer drugs, picture that you made an income around the fifty thousand-dollar mark; and the cost of some of the drugs even with health insurance is nearly twice that much. This is not taking into consideration how much you would have to pay yourself, if health insurance cannot cover it.

The other side of the spectrum

For the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing Association, they did not agree with what the doctors wrote in the article. They argued that it failed to take into consideration how much cancer drug cost figures into the demographic of the total spending on cancer treatments.

They also mentioned that to follow through with the suggestions mentioned in the article would inhibit rather encourage the positive changes the article hopes to achieve. To put it simply, it would render much of the progress made thus far in cancer treatment in vain.

In the end, both sides continue to make arguments for their sides and the future of cancer drug treatment costs. Neither are relenting in their arguments.

Study suggests a connection between wireless devices and cancer - http://clapway.com/2015/07/25/study-suggests-a-connection-between-wireless-devices-and-cancer678/

A bit of Background for the connection

Cancer has always been very concerning in and of itself, especially when it is afflicting those you know and around you. This is why the WHO organized the International Agency for Research on Cancer to help find causes, cures, and treatment for cancer.

At a certain point in time in May 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified RFR, or radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, as a possible carcinogen to people. This was due to the rising concern of the negative health effects from continual exposure to RFR via wireless devices, thereby beginning the connection between wireless devices and cancer.

Research suggested that these RFR might have long-term effects and may increase the risk for cancer. Although the evidence for the research was judged to be inadequate, new research suggests that might have been a call made too soon.

The connection between wireless devices and cancer

A review study that was published in the Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine on the 7th of this month took on the task of looking over that connection between wireless devices and cancer. The press release for the research said that the study suggested a metabolic imbalance caused by the radiation from wireless devices could be a factor for many health risks.

The study goes on to explore the effects of low radiofrequency radiation has on the metabolism and has shown some signs of what is called oxidative stress. The presence of this type of stress may help to explain a number of illnesses that can arise after being exposed to RFR for too long.

What does this mean?

With all the data of the study about the connection between wireless devices and cancer, researchers of the study have concluded that there is a connection between the two. The exposure to low RFR acts as a danger to living cells that cause oxidative stress to arise, which then can lead to numerous health ailments.

As a result of the connection between wireless devices and cancer, the researchers also asked the public to be leery of using said devices for reasons of health concerns. Only more research can be reveal if the truths be behind concerns are set in stone.

Beach Sand Makes It Easier for You to Get Sick - http://clapway.com/2015/07/17/beach-sand-makes-it-easier-for-you-to-get-sick784/

The memo by officials

Summer is the prime time for people to go on road trips, take their boats out onto the water, and settle on the sand for a tan. Basically, everyone wants a nice time out in the sun for the family. However, what you may not know is that the beach, specifically the sand, is what possibly making you sick.

The American Chemical Society put out a public release  on Wednesday warning everyone who goes to the beach about the illness you contract at beaches from the water may factor in more from the sand. The change in where you contract the ailments came from a study from the Environmental Science & Technology, which covers the fact that infections may come from the fecal contamination that linger in sand.

How does beach sand make you sick?

After initial exposure to whatever fecal contaminations into the water, the bacteria from the waste get split into the beach sand and into the open water. However, the water decays the bacteria faster, whereas in the beach sand, it decays slower, thereby allowing more time for you to risk getting infected.

Only certain bacteria decayed slower in the beach sand than in water. Those bacteria were the Enterococci and the C. perfringens. The latter causing abdominal cramping and some diarrhea that if not hydrated frequently could take you to the ER.

Efforts to prevent people from getting sick at the beach

Besides releasing a public announcement of the risk of contracting illness associated with the beach area, signs have been put up that warn against swimming so that the likelihood of infection is decreased. The reason being is that some coastal waters are subjected to sewage dumps and the fecal matter that then settles in the water contaminate it and begins the aforementioned contamination cycle.

So the next time you go to the beach, think twice about venturing too far to the water as that is where the risk of infection is most high. But maybe the consideration of relocating to a beach where waste dumps don’t occur is a better idea, or even a community pool.

Nearby Fracking May Be Causing Locals to Go to the Hospital - http://clapway.com/2015/07/17/nearby-fracking-may-be-causing-locals-to-go-to-the-hospital434/

Rising concern about fracking’s impacts on local health

The history of fracking is one filled with controversy, and never bodes well for the health of local residents involved. Even for those not a part of the industry, fracking has inadvertent and extremely harmful effects.

To emphasize how much of a concern it is, a study was conducted with PLOS to give some scientific proof of how the process is very aversive to the health of the public. The dangers of fracking is not new news or even new concerns, and there is even a website dedicated to the aforementioned risks.

One has to wonder with all the information about the danger of fracking out there, how it continues but there is no easy answer to that. In fact, the fracking industry only seems to be steadily growing.

Protests

The study in and of itself is a form of protest against fracking for the sake of the health of others and presents findings that indicates that yes, fracking has led to higher hospitalizations of locals for such things such ailments such as heart, neurological, and others. This is because the locals are exposed to the noise and toxins the process releases and the overall stress adding to their bad health.

This is not even the first fracking that has been protests in the U.S., in fact, a few months prior in April in the Southwest, on the Navajo Reservation, fracking went underway as well. There Navajos underwent a thousand-mile walk to help raise awareness for the dangers of fracking and in protest of it.

The danger of fracking was nothing new to the tribe; in the olden days of the 30s, 40s, and 80s, the land had been subject to a long history of mineral mining and also negligence from the mining industry in the past. The concern about fracking in the year 2015 after such a long history is no surprise and the wariness even more high because of the history.

It’s more than just hype

According to the data, thus far there have been an estimation of almost 200,000 hospitalization cases in the area fracking are being conducted in the state of Pennsylvania. Time will tell if the concerns are addressed.

Online Symptom Checkers Fail Testing by Harvard - http://clapway.com/2015/07/10/online-symptom-checkers-fail-testing-by-harvard567/

Reliance on internet for everything has its drawbacks

With our rising reliance on technology and the ever-growing presence the internet has in our lives, you would be hard pressed to find someone not glued to their electronic devices in some way, whether for work or leisure. This is true also for the medical field, with laymen feeling a tad paranoid about symptoms of illness or the occasional weird lump or mole, and wanting an internet solution for it.

They often take to Googling their symptoms on online symptom checkers such as WebMD or Mayo Clinic, and the like. However, this may prove to your biggest mistake according to a new study by Harvard researchers.

The study setup

A new study was published on Wednesday July 8th by Harvard researchers in the BMJ, looking into the accuracy of the online symptom checker. The examination was done in the form of an audit study in which twenty-three online symptom checkers where tested, all in English, with various medical conditions.

To help gauge the accuracy of the diagnoses of the online symptom checkers, the examination was divided into three categories of medical situations: emergency, non-emergency, and self-care. From there, the study observed which of these situations the online symptom checkers decided on, after the study came up with an illness it would take on and give the symptoms to the checker.

The Results

What the researchers then found was that the diagnoses were lackluster and the percentile of the number of times they were right on the money was low. It was enough to be concerned for the misdiagnoses and missed opportunities to get seen or medical care.

Also, the study found that the checkers would recommend going to the triage for treatment when self-care was the more reasonable choice. This was one of the problematic things the researchers found in the audit study on the online symptom checkers.

In fact, one of the authors of the study, Dr. Ateev Mehrotra, mentioned that the important thing about thinking about the symptoms of your ailments is not narrowing down what you have exactly, but rather to focus on seeking medical help immediately. Every second wasted on trying to diagnose yourself may higher your risk of serious injury or further injury to your health.

So yes, the online symptom checkers are pretty much all horrible guessers. Better brush up your acquaintance with your physician instead.
