Coca-Cola Want People To Ditch The Diet And Keep Drinking Coke - http://clapway.com/2015/08/10/coca-cola-want-people-to-ditch-the-diet-and-keep-drinking-coke123/

According to reports recently released by The New York Times, Coca-Cola has been funding a non-profit group to encourage Americans to pay more attention to their exercise regime and less towards their diet.

It is well known that obesity has become an extremely worrying health concern in the United States and many western countries over the past years. This is something that has been discussed numerous times in the media and as a result, consumers have become more health conscious and aware of the dangers of fast food.

However, even though many studies have shown the negative outcomes as a result of consuming fizzy drinks such as Coca-Cola, health experts hired by the company have been researching the benefits of the product and have recently released new information promoting the positive aspects of the drink.

Coke Less Dangerous than Believed?

In accordance with The New York Times, Coca-Cola have been spreading the message that the popular fizzy drink is not as dangerous as previously believed. This has been further promoted by scientists hired by the company through social media, at conferences and in medical journals.

Records show that $1.5 million was donated last year by Coca-Cola to begin an organization – the Global Energy Balance Network. However, health experts are skeptical towards the companies motives behind this campaign, especially as soda sales are currently in a decline.

Americans Consume Less Sugary Drinks

It seems that over the last two decades, the average American has reduced his consumption of full-calorie sodas quite considerably, drinking 25 percent less.

Therefore, the fact that Coca-Cola have recently hired a new group of scientists to convince people that exercise can make up for an unhealthy diet has caused a lot of suspicion towards Global Energy Balance Network.

Is the Coca-Cola Company Trying to Manipulate People?

Of course, this is not the first attempt the company has made to try and associate their product with a healthy lifestyle. According to reports, at the beginning of the year, nutrition, as well as fitness experts stated that a mini-can of Coca-Cola was believed to be a ‘healthy treat’.

While a can of Coca-Cola once in a while will do you no harm, it is definitely worth taking into consideration all aspects of a healthy lifestyle and what is right for your body on a daily basis, rather than simply going by reports from international companies.

Magnetic Pulses as Treatment for Tinnitus - http://clapway.com/2015/07/19/magnetic-pulses-as-treatment-for-tinnitus436/

Tinnitus is defined as a conditioned characterized by ringing, swishing or other noises that seem to originate in the ear or head. Tinnitus isn’t a dangerous problem, but it is usually a symptom of some other underlying condition) such as hearing loss related to age, injuries to the ear) and can be considered quite annoying. About one in five people are affected by this problem. Currently, there is no proven treatment for tinnitus. Oftentimes, patients suffering from tinnitus develop their own remedies and strategies to cope with and manage their symptoms. Researchers now believe that they have found a new method for treating tinnitus after discovering that by delivering electromagnetic pulses, that the severity of the symptoms can be improved.

ALMOST 20% OF PEOPLE WHO SUFFER FROM TINNITUS CLASSIFY IT AS CHRONIC

Out of all the people who are classified as suffering from chronic tinnitus, almost 20 percent report that their ailment is clinically significant and negatively affect their quality of life. Due to this disruptive characteristic that their problem presents, many scientists have studied for decades and integrating new forms of treating tinnitus.

CURRENT TREATMENT ONLY ALLEVIATES THE SYMPTOMS

Current treatments that are available include medications that alleviate the severity of the symptoms and targeting the contributing health conditions that could impact the problem, and methods to suppress the noise.

This study is published in the JAMA Otolaryngology and makes an assessment of the repeated use of rTMS, or transcranial magnetic stimulation delivered via a coil to the scalp of the patient. This study state that the researchers do not believe that the rTMS should be used as a replacement for effective management strategies that are currently available for tinnitus. Rather, they say that the new methods can strengthen the existing tinnitus therapies and offer a viable option for patients whose response to other treatments wasn’t pleasurable.

THE TREATMENT INCLUDED 2000 PULSES EVERY DAY FOR 10 DAYS

The researchers randomly selected 70 patients who had tinnitus to receive either active rTMS or placebo. The treatment used 2000 pulses for every session that lasted 10 consecutive work days. Follow up assessments were conducted by the researchers after weeks 1, 2, 4, 13, and 26 after the final session of treatment.

Colorado Says No to Medical Marijuana for Treatment of PTSD - http://clapway.com/2015/07/16/colorado-says-no-to-medical-marijuana-to-ptsd567/

The trauma

Dealing with any mental health issues is extremely troublesome for the patient, their family, and those around them. Some take years to go away, and some some never truly do.
PTSD affects many people who have suffered a traumatic event in their life. One may periodically see or relive that moment and become severely stressed in the process. PTSD is often seen in returning soldiers or victims of a violent attack. But it can be seen in other cases as well, such as in small children.

Medical marijuana for treatment?

Since the legal advancements of allowing medical marijuana legal in health applications have been made, another doctor by the name of Dr. Mechoulam discovered that certain properties of marijuana may have positive effects on PTSD patients, with respect to memory. What was found in experiments with mice was that, after use, marijuana helps a subject to forget shock triggered by stimuli, whereas others without marijuana simply never forgot.

This novel idea for treating PTSD was fascinating and potentially promising to many, and this was likely the reason why officials and voters wanted to conduct research and start putting it in practice. Voting in Colorado were underway recently, and a decision was made.

The decision about medical marijuana treatment

A decision was made by the Colorado Board of Health yesterday about whether nor not to allow the state to let PTSD patients use medical marijuana as treatment. However, they said no to the measure due a variety of factors, including lack of sufficient research and medical trials on the effectiveness of this type of treatment for PTSD patients.

Despite the usage of marijuana being legal in the state, the decision was almost unanimous in its vote with a vote of 6-2. This is not the first time the recommendation to use medical marijuana for PTSD has been put to the vote.

However, even though the motion was not passed, patients can still continue to use medical marijuana as treatment on their dime. The downside of all this is that Colorado implements a tax on medical marijuana which is significantly lower than the tax amount for recreational use. Studies are now underway for the practical use of medical marijuana in treatment of PTSD by the state.

Online Symptom Checkers Fail Testing by Harvard - http://clapway.com/2015/07/10/online-symptom-checkers-fail-testing-by-harvard567/

Reliance on internet for everything has its drawbacks

With our rising reliance on technology and the ever-growing presence the internet has in our lives, you would be hard pressed to find someone not glued to their electronic devices in some way, whether for work or leisure. This is true also for the medical field, with laymen feeling a tad paranoid about symptoms of illness or the occasional weird lump or mole, and wanting an internet solution for it.

They often take to Googling their symptoms on online symptom checkers such as WebMD or Mayo Clinic, and the like. However, this may prove to your biggest mistake according to a new study by Harvard researchers.

The study setup

A new study was published on Wednesday July 8th by Harvard researchers in the BMJ, looking into the accuracy of the online symptom checker. The examination was done in the form of an audit study in which twenty-three online symptom checkers where tested, all in English, with various medical conditions.

To help gauge the accuracy of the diagnoses of the online symptom checkers, the examination was divided into three categories of medical situations: emergency, non-emergency, and self-care. From there, the study observed which of these situations the online symptom checkers decided on, after the study came up with an illness it would take on and give the symptoms to the checker.

The Results

What the researchers then found was that the diagnoses were lackluster and the percentile of the number of times they were right on the money was low. It was enough to be concerned for the misdiagnoses and missed opportunities to get seen or medical care.

Also, the study found that the checkers would recommend going to the triage for treatment when self-care was the more reasonable choice. This was one of the problematic things the researchers found in the audit study on the online symptom checkers.

In fact, one of the authors of the study, Dr. Ateev Mehrotra, mentioned that the important thing about thinking about the symptoms of your ailments is not narrowing down what you have exactly, but rather to focus on seeking medical help immediately. Every second wasted on trying to diagnose yourself may higher your risk of serious injury or further injury to your health.

So yes, the online symptom checkers are pretty much all horrible guessers. Better brush up your acquaintance with your physician instead.
