NASA Grew A Flower in Space, is Medical Marijuana Next? - http://clapway.com/2016/01/19/nasa-grew-a-flower-in-space-is-medical-marijuana-next-123/

A thirteen petal orange zinnia has bloomed in zero gravity, thanks to the work of NASA astronaut Scott Kelly at the International Space Station. The agency wasn’t sure the flower would amount to much in the first weeks of 2016, but the #spaceflower is in full bloom!

Scott Kelly Tweets Picture of First Space Flower Grown at ISS

This is basically alien life form since it grew very far from Earth. The fact that this zinnia blossomed is a first for science, and it shows the deep dedication Kelly had after the flower showed signs of dying. The zinnia was overcome with mold as of the last week of December. This was because the seed containers had a leak, causing the plants to become flooded.

Much like Matt Damon in the Martian, Kelly put his full effort into reviving the plants, and he succeeded. He watered them not on schedule, but whenever he felt like the plants needed it. Only one plant managed to flower while the rest died. These will be sent back to Houston and analyzed.

This plant isn’t the first to be grown in space itself. In 1996, NASA astronaut Shannon Lucid managed to grow what stalks aboard the Russian Mir space station. In 2014, another group of astronauts grew lettuce at ISS. Kelly’s is the first flower to ever bloom in space.

Will NASA Grow Medical Marijuana Next?

So long as the plant remains illegal, it’s unlikely that NASA will be growing cannabis in space to make into medical marijuana. However, they are planning on growing food at the ISS. The growth duration of a zinnia plant is 60-80 days, which is a lot longer than lettuce and wheat stalks. This is why this was a particular challenge for Scott Kelly. The next step, according to NASA’s blog, is to grow a tomato plant.

The ISS Could Have its Own Farmer’s Market

NASA Human Research Program representative Alexandra Whitmire expressed that growing veggies in fruits in space make extended space explorations more feasible. During these longer missions, astronauts will be able to oversee the growth of Earth food in space. After testing their safety, the ISS could even feature a farmer’s market of its own, with naturally grown food. If space does affect plants and their phenotype, we could even have bizarre but natural and new kinds of veggies, like blue-yellow spotted tomatoes. Maybe in a very far future, once marijuana is legalized at least in all of the United States, they could try and grow medical marijuana.

For now, NASA will be following the growth of the space flower closely. It’s another exciting day in space and for Scott Kelly, and a great kickoff to 2016.

Candy E-Cigarettes Are More Tempting to Children than Medical Marijuana - http://clapway.com/2016/01/18/candy-e-cigarettes-are-more-tempting-to-children-than-medical-marijuana-123/

A new study from the University of Cambridge reveals that e-cigarettes that are bubble gum or chocolate flavored attract children into trying and buying them. The vapor sticks are now the most widely used nicotine product for children in countries with strict tobacco control policies.

The Use of E-cigarettes by High Schoolers Tripled Between 2013 and 2014

The exact figures declare that the rate of high schoolers using e-cigarettes in the United States went up from 4.5% to over 13%. Middle school students using e-cigarettes using e-cigarettes went up from 1% to 4%. In England, use of these sticks in people between the ages of 11-18 went from 5% to 8%.

These findings have raised many concerns to the academia and regulatory bodies. The attraction that younger kids have to e-cigarettes might lead to tobacco use and addiction. As things stand, e-cigarettes are advertised in more than 8,000 flavors. These include anything from fruits to sweets. The candy-like flavoring is the most concerning, as younger people are more attracted to them.

Children Are Mostly Exposed to Sweet Flavored E-Cigarettes

The Cambridge study was published in the journal BMJ Tobacco Control. The researchers took 598 children and split them into three groups. One group was shown advertisements for candy-like flavored e-cigarettes while the second was shown ads for non-flavored cigarettes. The third group worked as the control group and saw no advertisements.

After the jump, the groups were asked questions in regards to the appeal of using e-cigarettes. They were asked about tobacco smoking, the harm in smoking and their reaction to the ads. The goal was to gauge if they were interested in buying and trying e-cigarettes. Group one responded that they liked the ads and had increased interest in buying and trying e-cigarettes. None of the groups expressed interest in tobacco smoking.

E-Cigarettes Are More Attractive than Medical Marijuana.

This study proves that e-cigarette smoking doesn’t make tobacco smoking more attractive. However, it doesn’t take away from the appeal of e-cigarettes themselves, which is also a nicotine product. There’s a lot that regulators need to take into account as e-cigarettes become more widespread.

There’s no exact study on the appeal of medical marijuana on kids though exposure might be at similar levels. However, using marijuana is a significant leap upwards in the scale of drug use for young people under 14 compared to e-cigarettes. Accessibility and financial feasibility are very different for medical marijuana. As it is introduced into several states with time, it will be regulated more closely. The same will definitely happen for e-cigarettes.

Medical Marijuana Doesn"t Fly in New York Like in LA - http://clapway.com/2016/01/10/medical-marijuana-doesnt-fly-in-new-your-like-in-la-123/

The first medical marijuana dispensary opened its doors in New York this week. It is one more sign that weed just doesn’t resonate with New York like it does with LA. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo just passed a medical marijuana program this week. However, it looks like it will only do the bare minimum to be politically expedient.

Marijuana Clapway

New York Government Officials Don’t Want Weed Propagated

Only a handful of dispensaries will be opening through the state. Not only that, it’ll be really tough to get a license. New York is going to be awfully picky about who needs marijuana. This is definitely not the case in California. LA is one of the most liberal cities in the world. They have seen a lot of stability after legalizing medical marijuana. Other Western states like Colorado, Oregon and Washington have even legalized it recreationally. They are not going up in smoke. So why is the East coast so reluctant to let weed in?

Apparently, Only Severe Medical Conditions Should Be Treated With Weed

According to the program, some of the only conditions that allow use of medical marijuana are cancer, HIV, ADIS, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. What’s more, inhaled forms of weed and edibles are still illegal. People with these specific conditions can only buy marijuana oils that can be vaporized, or get access to pills with THC.

The program is obviously just a formality to get with the weed program that western states and Washington DC are starting. The main criticism the program faces is that it is not addressing the needs of real patients that actually need or want weed to handle pain. It only addresses people in extreme cases. New York just doesn’t want to extend their scope to moderate conditions.

Will The New York Medical Marijuana Program Ever Look Like the One in LA?

New York won’t be seeing any radical change in regards to medical marijuana, at least not anytime soon. Laws may curb as time progresses. New York needs a little more motivation to be persuaded, and it’ll come in the form of more specific laws with good regulations.

Alzheimer"s Benefits From Moderate Drinking, Not Medical Marijuana - http://clapway.com/2015/12/15/alzheimers-benefits-from-moderate-drinking-but-not-medical-marijuana-123/

Early Alzheimer’s disease patients who engage in light or moderate drinking have been shown to have fewer chances of dying in a new study. The research was conducted at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark.

Alzheimer

Moderate Drinking Can Have A Protective Effect on Cardiovascular Disease

The team, lead by Dr. Sine Bernsten, took data from a previous 12-month study that looked into a psychosocial counseling and support program for people with Alzheimer’s in early stages. This study had 321 participants, with details of lifestyle habits. 10% of the people didn’t drink at all, and 70% had about 10ml of pure alcohol per day. This would be about 1/3 of a pint of beer or half a glass of wine per day.

People Who Drank Moderately Had Better Life Expectancy

People Who Drank Moderately Had Better Life Expectancy

17% of the participants drank about 30ml per day, and less than 5% drank over 30ml per day. After four years, 53 out of the 321 study participants died. The average life expectancy for people with Alzheimer’s is 8-10 years. In conclusion, people in the study who drank between 20ml and 30ml had a 77% lower risk of death than those who drank less.

Alzheimer

Alzheimer’s Could Benefit from Alcohol

This was concluded after taking into account gender, age, education and smoking. This is evidence that moderate drinking has a protective effect on mortality and reduces risk of cardiovascular disease, modification of inflammation and insulin sensitivity.

Though this can’t say for sure that drinking has a positive effect on Alzheimer’s patients or in people in general, it definitely doesn’t dissuade from the idea that it could have some benefits. As moderate drinking can have a link to social drinking, this would bring further benefits to anyone.

Can Medical Marijuana Prevent Alzheimer’s?

Very small doses of TCH can slow the production of beta-amyloid proteins, a key contributor to the development of Alzheimer’s, according to a study in the Journal of Alzheimer’s disease. Though the study was published last year, it retains some merit, especially when more states are introducing medical marijuana production.

The study stresses that though it prevents the development of the beta-amyloid protein, it cannot be ruled out to be safe for use by anyone. However, TCH can be considered to be used in medications that can be safe and legal and useful in treating Alzheimer’s disease.

Medical Marijuana Has No Effect on Dementia Patients

Medical Marijuana Has No Effect on Dementia Patients

There wasn’t a significant difference in studies researching the effect of marijuana in the treatment of dementia. A team from Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, Netherlands researched the effect of marijuana on depression, anxiety, aggression, insomnia and hallucinations.

A group of 50 participants were split into two groups. One of them received 1.5mg of medical marijuana in pills, while another received a placebo. This was administered three times a day for three weeks. The behavioral symptoms for both groups were found to be exactly the same as before the study was conducted.

Further Research Could Provide Different Results

The research was led by Geke A.H. van den Elsen, who still believes that medical marijuana could have positive effects on dementia. He expressed that there is a higher dose could be beneficial. Further research could shed new light on the effect of medical marijuana on theses kinds of patients, which are becoming increasingly stigmatized and less commonly treated. Medical marijuana, perhaps in higher doses and ingested in different methods can have more beneficial effects than initially projected.

Alzheimer’s is a very dangerous disease. If more treatments are found to handle it in its early stages, the lives of millions will be impacted. Even if moderate drinking and medical marijuana aren’t the answer, there should be a natural compound that can help reduce the progression of the disease. The scientific community has still to discover more alternatives to treatment.

LSD is Way Healthier Than Medical Marijuana - http://clapway.com/2015/12/12/lsd-is-way-healthier-than-medical-marijuana-123/

Microdosing with LSD is the new drug trend, and some are claiming that it’s even healthier than using medical marijuana. A lot of technology professional adults in their twenties are taking minute doses of acid to increase productivity at work.

Medicinal Marijuana LSD

Mircodoses of LSD Can Actually Be Very Effective

The actual definition of microdosing is taking doses of a drug that is so low that it becomes sub-therapeutic. This means that effects are minimized, and do not affect the whole body. This is usually applied to hallucinogens. The microdose for LSD is six-25 micrograms, while for mushrooms it’s between 0.2 and 0.5 grams, and it lies between 50-75 micrograms for mescaline HCL.

It sounds crazy, but there could be some science behind it. Hallucinogens, while having a detrimental effect on the body in full doses, can help ease communication between the brain and the body. It naturally encourages creative thinking, since these drugs entertain thoughts that one wouldn’t naturally occur while sober.

Medicinal Marijuana LSD

Microdosing Isn’t Just Taking the Drug

The key to microdosing properly isn’t just to take a minute dose of the stuff, but also remaining active after taking it. Activities that are usually done while microdosing include extreme sports, appreciating nature, going into spiritual practices, and just going on with your daily activities in general.

The Research on LSD Microdosing isn’t Solid

The true effects of this kind of therapy are loose. While it can be helpful with creativity, it can also be incredibly distracting. The effectiveness of this method should depend on the condition of the user since they’d have to have low risk of dependency. LSD and mushrooms are both very high-risk drugs, so further research would have to make up for these risks.

Silicon Valley Takes A Trip Back to the Summer of ‘69

This is the latest trend in Silicon Valley, allegedly because it helps people ‘think out of the box’ and get boosts of energy. In addition, it quickens the time spent doing complicated problem solving, which is commonplace in the industries based in the area.

People who have experienced it first-hand say that it gives them insight and an energy ‘lift’ of sorts. The idea of microdosing therapeutically was first introduced by James Fadiman, who authored The Psychedelic Explorer’s Guide. The book goes over the results of his own experiments microdosing. This kickstarted the trend, specifically to treat depression, migraines and fatigue of chronic nature. Not only does this unconventional therapy get rid of the pain, but it also boosts creative thinking.

How does Microdosing Work?

As told by Fadiman, microdosing should be done every four days, in the morning, and nothing else about your daily routine should change. Results show that microdosing helps people eat better, sleep better and encouraged to exercise or meditate. This is because the nature of the drugs makes it easier for the brain to communicate. Though a better explanation might be that it makes synapses ‘looser’. This simplifies problem solving and increases the secretion of dopamine and serotonin, which attributes to the ‘happy’ feeling and the rush that is often associated with hallucinogens.

The Science Behind LSD Microdosing vs. Medical Marijuana

There’s loose evidence in terms of real science, but guesswork suggests that microdosing rebalances any parts of the brain that are imbalanced. Where these imbalances are adjusted is still a big question. It could be in the central nervous system or the brain stem. It’s also theorized that it could be helping the mitochondria to function.

Medical marijuana is a natural drug, unlike LSD. This drug has been shown to work well as an analgesic. Although it isn’t associated with ‘out of the box thinking’ at the level that LSD would bring you, it has been revealed that it’s possible to remain active while using. Bottom line, it has lower risks, but it will not give users the same rush.

Marijuana Can Treat Back Pain, But Also Destroy Your Brain - http://clapway.com/2015/12/03/marijuana-treat-back-pain-destroy-brain/

Minnesota has just added ‘intractable pain’ to the list of conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana. This involves injuries from car accidents or pain from conditions like multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, chronic abdominal conditions or daily migraine headaches.

9. Back Pain Medical Marijuana 2

Weed Has Many Health Benefits

Weed is often used recreationally and medically to ease basic pains. THC has the ability to relax muscles and give users a feeling of ease. Minnesota’s medical marijuana program is scheduled to start August 2016. Many modifications have been made to the program as it grows and develops. Due to the nature of the program, it is bound to change often and adjust to the needs of patients.

Pain is Subjective

The 2014 Minnesota Medical Cannabis Law defines intractable pain as pain that cannot be treated and no solution has been found for it. This is a vague definition, as rate and intensity of pain is very subjective. This is why the Minnesota Department of Health clarifies that whether or not medical marijuana is prescribed is up to the doctor and their patient.

Medical Marijuana Can Also Do Significant Damage

Medical weed has been shown to have health benefits, but there are some drawbacks to its use. Cannabis slows down synapse processes in the brain. It can even cause paranoia and more stress in some people.

In addition, a recent study from Kings College revealed that people who used a large amount of weed had a smaller amount of white matter in their corpus callosum. This is a sign of brain damage, as the white matter enables the brain to function without disruptions. While this is great news for Minnesota, everything should be followed up with caution.

Medical Marijuana causes Significant Brain Damage - http://clapway.com/2015/11/28/medical-marijuana-causes-significant-brain-damage123/

There has been a recent study that has taken place at Kings College London, and they have decided to scan the brains of multiple drug users. Researchers at Kings College London stated that their data showed that people who smoked a large amount of pot had smaller amounts of white brain matter inside their corpus callosum. Basically, they are stating that users who smoke a significant amount of high-potency drugs are experiencing brain damage. Also, what does this mean for medical marijuana?

MEDICAL MARIJUANA: MORE OF A CURSE THAN A SOLUTION?

The scientists that performed this experiment said that they tested around 56 patients who were excessive drug users, and also 43 patients who had never done drugs. Paola Dazzan, a neurobiologist at Kings College, stated that their team of scientists said that they noticed the patients who used heavy doses of cannabis had a significant effect on their white matter fibres in the brain. Dazzan then concluded that the more cannabis one smokes, the more damage to the brain there will be. So, this leads to another very interesting question; is medical marijuana a good solution? One of the key aspects that need to be taken away from the study done at Kings College is the use of the word high-potency. Medical marijuana was never met to be taken in high doses, and if it is then brain damage can be expected. Just as is the case with so many other products, if medical marijuana is taken the way it was intended, as a medicine, it should not result in brain damage.

Dazzan has also stated that they most important factor to remember when taking medical marijuana is how much one takes and what type. Any drug can be abused by its patients, and all of them can cause side effects, but overdosing on medical marijuana is much more dangerous than any drugs. The scientists behind this study did not officially say why they ran these tests, but maybe they were trying to send a message to anyone who overdoses on is what is only supposed to be a medicine. However, that is purely speculation.

Could #marijuana really help effects that come with #autism? - http://clapway.com/2015/07/20/can-medical-marijuana-ease-severe-side-effects-of-autism-221/

Two months ago, the Medical Marijuana Review Panel has made their case that marijuana might be able to ease severe side effects of autism and the motion seems to be now considered for approval in Michigan.

Parents Want to Treat Children with Marijuana

The fact that marijuana can relieve the side effects of other diseases, such as glaucoma, cancer, HIV or hepatitis C is already known. But will it be approved for autism, as well?

Even if there have been opinions against the use of marijuana, when it comes to autistic children, quite a large number of parents are beginning to use medical marijuana to help their kids deal with the severe symptoms whatever disorder or disease they have might bring.

Marijuana Should Be Used for Aggressive Behaviors, Doctors Say

In accordance with the advice given by many doctors, it seems that medical marijuana should only be used for aggressive behaviors and meltdowns in autistic children. However, there are many parents who are already treating their children with this plant.

According to their declarations, the kids managed to achieve a more normal life since they started the treatment with marijuana.

The Marijuana Approval Meeting Postponed

A meeting to decide if marijuana should be accepted as part of the autism treatment was supposed to happen today. However, the Michigan Medical Marijuana Review Panel postponed action Monday in order to allow the members to read the research. They will meet again on 31st of July.

The members have information regarding both sides of the problem: those who proposed medical marijuana as a treatment for autism stated that the oil extracted from it can control the behavior of autistic persons. However, their opponents strongly believe that there is not enough information that sustains this affirmation, considering that marijuana is not helping people with autism.

The Panel Will Make a Recommendation in Favor or Against

There are more people who are in favor of allowing medical marijuana as part of the autism treatment. However, the decision is in the hands of the director of the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.

Until this moment, in Michigan, medical marijuana can be used against the side effects of cancer, glaucoma, HIV, hepatitis C and a few other conditions. But in order to know id autism can be treated with this plant, we have to wait until the end of July.

Cannabis Could Help Heal Broken Bones - http://clapway.com/2015/07/17/cannabis-could-help-heal-broken-bones678/

Cannabis has been used as a medical remedy in many societies around the world for centuries. It is just now making a serious comeback into the world of modern medicine. Some of the important medical benefits of cannabis are alleviating symptoms associated with cancer, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson’s disease have been evaluated.

THE STUDY WAS DONE BY TEL AVIV UNIVERSITY AND HEBREW UNIVERSITY

A study that was recently published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research by Tel Aviv University and Hebrew University showed another promising medical application for marijuana. According to research, the use of non- psychotropic component cannabinoid cannabidiol, also known as CBD, helps heal bone fractures. This study was conducted on rats with mid-femoral fractures and the results were that CBD enhanced the healing process after just eight weeks. This is even when it CBD is isolated form THC, tetrahydrocannabinol, the major psychoactive component of cannabis. The same team that did this study also found in earlier research that cannabinoid receptors in the body stimulate bone formation and prevent bone loss. This opens the door for cannabinoid to fight against osteoporosis and other bone related diseases (BRLDs). This research study was led by doctors at the Bone Research Laboratory at the Department of Anatomy and Anthropology.

THIS IS A PATHWAY FOR OTHER CANNABINOID FUELED TREATMENTS

The potential for the clinical use of cannabinoid-related compounds is going to be thoroughly discovered in order to properly develop more therapies. This clinical therapy used cannabinoid that has no psychoactivity and is anti-inflammatory.

The body naturally with a cannabinoid system that regulated non-vital and vital systems. The body only responds to cannabis due to the receptors that can be activated by the same compounds in the cannabis plant. Researchers also found that the skeleton is regulated by cannabinoids. The addition of non-psychogenic compounds acting outside of the brain still affect the skeleton.

CBD MAKES THE BONE STRONGER THAN BEFORE

CBD itself does a lot of beneficial things to the bones during healing. It makes the bones stronger during the healing process, and enhances the maturing of the collagenous matrixes that provide the basis for new mineralization of bone tissues. This process helps the healed bone become harder to break in the future.

Colorado Says No to Medical Marijuana for Treatment of PTSD - http://clapway.com/2015/07/16/colorado-says-no-to-medical-marijuana-to-ptsd567/

The trauma

Dealing with any mental health issues is extremely troublesome for the patient, their family, and those around them. Some take years to go away, and some some never truly do.
PTSD affects many people who have suffered a traumatic event in their life. One may periodically see or relive that moment and become severely stressed in the process. PTSD is often seen in returning soldiers or victims of a violent attack. But it can be seen in other cases as well, such as in small children.

Medical marijuana for treatment?

Since the legal advancements of allowing medical marijuana legal in health applications have been made, another doctor by the name of Dr. Mechoulam discovered that certain properties of marijuana may have positive effects on PTSD patients, with respect to memory. What was found in experiments with mice was that, after use, marijuana helps a subject to forget shock triggered by stimuli, whereas others without marijuana simply never forgot.

This novel idea for treating PTSD was fascinating and potentially promising to many, and this was likely the reason why officials and voters wanted to conduct research and start putting it in practice. Voting in Colorado were underway recently, and a decision was made.

The decision about medical marijuana treatment

A decision was made by the Colorado Board of Health yesterday about whether nor not to allow the state to let PTSD patients use medical marijuana as treatment. However, they said no to the measure due a variety of factors, including lack of sufficient research and medical trials on the effectiveness of this type of treatment for PTSD patients.

Despite the usage of marijuana being legal in the state, the decision was almost unanimous in its vote with a vote of 6-2. This is not the first time the recommendation to use medical marijuana for PTSD has been put to the vote.

However, even though the motion was not passed, patients can still continue to use medical marijuana as treatment on their dime. The downside of all this is that Colorado implements a tax on medical marijuana which is significantly lower than the tax amount for recreational use. Studies are now underway for the practical use of medical marijuana in treatment of PTSD by the state.

"If getting #marijuana in #California wasn’t already easy enough..." - http://clapway.com/2015/07/01/uber-for-pot-eaze-the-revolutionary-weed-delivery-app-233/

If getting marijuana in California wasn’t already easy enough, Eaze, a weed-delivery app makes it possible to receive medical marijuana in less than 10 minutes, all this while you sit comfortably on your couch.

Through their newly launched EazeMD service, the California startup helps potential medical marijuana patients to electronically receive a state-issued ID almost “instantaneously”. Patients will not be required to travel to specific clinics, pay around 100 US dollars, and wait days before receiving their card in the mail. Those days are over.

“The process of acquiring medical marijuana can be slow, cumbersome and unpredictable,” said Keith McCarty, founder and CEO of Eaze, upon establishing his services last year. “Eaze’s technology automates all of that so each patient can have a consistent, comfortable experience — and can focus on getting better.”

Virtually connecting patients and doctors

EeazeMD will sell legal cannabis identification cards, combining on-demand cannabis with on-demand ‘virtual doctors’ visits’ through what developers say is a “secure real-time video chat environment”. Potential patients are able to talk with one of the weed-delivery app partner doctors who then decide whether or not to approve the demand.

This ‘technique’ is completely legal. The secret behind EazeMD is what the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services calls telehealth: “the use of electronic information and telecommunications technologies to support long-distance clinical health care, patient and professional health-related education, public health and health administration.”

Technology makes it cheap and effective

Upon passing an evaluation the weed-delivery app prescribes a state-issued cannabis identification card for only 25 US dollars.

Patients are then transferred to the virtual platform where they are able to order their medication, access an entire network of dispensaries, and utilize a delivery service, which has an estimated 10-minute delivery rate that patients can track in real time.

Apps helping medical marijuana users

Weed-delivery app Eaze has raised 12.5 million US dollars from investors like Snoop Dogg, since its initial launch in 2012. The service is currently only available in San Francisco, and will expand to Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange County.

You can use the Eaze web app on your phone or computer by clicking here.

The app comes about a year after the debut of Nestdrop, another weed-delivery app that offers medical marijuana users high quality products through their smartphones.
