The first medical marijuana dispensary opened its doors in New York this week. It is one more sign that weed just doesn’t resonate with New York like it does with LA. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo just passed a medical marijuana program this week. However, it looks like it will only do the bare minimum to be politically expedient.

New York Government Officials Don’t Want Weed Propagated

Only a handful of dispensaries will be opening through the state. Not only that, it’ll be really tough to get a license. New York is going to be awfully picky about who needs marijuana. This is definitely not the case in California. LA is one of the most liberal cities in the world. They have seen a lot of stability after legalizing medical marijuana. Other Western states like Colorado, Oregon and Washington have even legalized it recreationally. They are not going up in smoke. So why is the East coast so reluctant to let weed in?

Apparently, Only Severe Medical Conditions Should Be Treated With Weed

According to the program, some of the only conditions that allow use of medical marijuana are cancer, HIV, ADIS, Parkinson’s disease and epilepsy. What’s more, inhaled forms of weed and edibles are still illegal. People with these specific conditions can only buy marijuana oils that can be vaporized, or get access to pills with THC.

The program is obviously just a formality to get with the weed program that western states and Washington DC are starting. The main criticism the program faces is that it is not addressing the needs of real patients that actually need or want weed to handle pain. It only addresses people in extreme cases. New York just doesn’t want to extend their scope to moderate conditions.

Will The New York Medical Marijuana Program Ever Look Like the One in LA?

New York won’t be seeing any radical change in regards to medical marijuana, at least not anytime soon. Laws may curb as time progresses. New York needs a little more motivation to be persuaded, and it’ll come in the form of more specific laws with good regulations.

Here is some news that will not make parents happy, now, that schools are about to open and head lice will become one of the most popular concerns.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about six to twelve million infestations by lice get recorded every year in the U.S. in children 3 to 11 years old.

Ouch.

HOW DO LICE SPREAD?

Lice do not jump or fly and it’s all a matter of hair and head contact. The only bridge that helps them travel from one head to another is the other head itself:

“It[‘]s really head-to-head contact, lice do not jump, they do not fly, it is all hair-to-hair, head-to-head contact,” Diane McGinley, Owner of Shiny Strands says.

Of course there are drugs that can help parents with their children’s lice but what has been really difficult to control are the nits, which are their eggs, and some chemicals are not strong enough to eradicate them.

BUT NOW WE HAVE A BIGGER LICE-PROBLEM

A new head lice strain that has become resistant to the conventional, chemical treatments has appeared in the U.S., according to health officials.

A new study, presented Tuesday at the American Chemical Society meeting and funded by Sanofi, a pharmaceutical company that owns Sklice lotion, which contains a newer generation lice-fighting chemical, says that in samples from 25 of the 30 states, there were insects that had resistance genes. In some samples, including ones from California, Florida, Maine and Minnesota, every insect in the sample did.

And as Kyong Sup Yoon, associate professor of biological sciences and environmental sciences at Southern Illinois University says, people are going to have a very hard time fighting the lice with permethrin or pyrethrin based products.

According to a CNN report, lice resistance is not something new and it started in the mid 1990s in the United States. Head lice remover manufacturers suggest that parents be sure to eliminate nits from the scalp of the infected person, which are attached to the base of hair and hatch in about eight days.

HOW TO ELIMINATE NITS

The first thing you do in order to fight the new species of the resistant lice that appeared across the U.S. recently is to try higher doses of the standard lice treatments like Nix and Rid, which contain over-the-counter permethrin.

“Tell you[r] child that if he or she takes their coat or sweatshirt off during recess, don’t make a pile of jackets. No matter what you use, if it’s a chemical or all-natural, there isn’t a shampoo or magic formula that will just completely eradicate head lice,” McGinley of Shiny Strands suggests.

Some alternative methods suggest olive oil, mayonnaise, and vinegar on a child’s head but remember that after the treatment you have to vacuum the area, wash bedding and bag everything up. There are some cities where you can hire professional lice checkers and cleaners to do the hard work for you. Google it!

Climate change is no big news to all of us, whether we believe it is caused by man’s action on our planet or not. Studies are released frequently warning us and politicians that if we do not take immediate action on climate change, we might all drown or get heat strokes one day or another.

Venice to become a “Modern Day Atlantis”

A recent study has warned that sea levels could increase up to 20 feet (6 meters) above their current levels, meaning that all those living in the coastal areas of the world are at-risk. Warnings for cities like New York, Miami and Bangkok were included in the research, and Venice is believed to become a “modern day Atlantis”, being a city entirely built on water.

Researchers have reached this conclusion after analysing extensive research made on melting polar ice sheets over the past 30 years. This led them to discover that a 20-foot increase in sea levels had already occurred over the past 3 million years.

The most concerning thing is that this rise had occurred only after a “mere” one-two degree celsius increase in the planet temperatures. This is quite worrying for all, as today’s climate change research always puts emphasis on the rising temperatures, which would have a direct effect on the sea levels.

Poles warm faster than the rest of the planet

This comes especially when the poles — due to geographical reasons — warm faster than the rest of the planet and are the area where ice is mostly concentrated. This means that if temperatures there increase quicker than anywhere else, the sea levels won’t be struggling to rise at all.

Concerning this issue, lead researcher Andrea Dutton from the University of Florida said, “as the planet warms, the poles warm even faster, raising important questions about how ice sheets in Greenland and Antarctica will respond. While this amount of sea-level rise will not happen overnight, it is sobering.”

The Maldives at biggest risk

Scientists have warned that before New York or Miami, the Maldives would be the first world country to disappear due to rising sea levels. Most of the islands of the archipelago lie just 4.9 feet (1,5 meters) above sea levels. Ironically, the country’s leader is planning on buying land abroad in case the island’s population has to move, if the predictions turn into reality.

In December, world leaders will gather in Paris for a summit on Climate Change — an issues concerning the whole world — hopefully introducing new legislation to further safeguard our planet.

TRADING ON THE NYSE HAS BEEN SUSPENDED

Today, all the trading on the New York Stock Exchange came to a complete halt. There are unexpected technical issues occurring, which brings more worry to investors. This comes as another blow to ever present and growing economic concerns around the world.

The shutdown began at 11:32 a.m. ET. Outages like these rarely occur in United States markets but these bring back the memories of the August 2013 “Flash Freeze” when trading was halted on the NASDAQ for hours.

Traders on the NYSE floor were standing and looking at blank trading screens and terminals where no offers or bids were being exchanged. Trading in New York Stock Exchange-listed stocks was still occurring on other exchanges, including the NASDAQ.

The NYSE has released in a statement that they are currently experiencing a technical issue that is being worked on to reach a resolution as quickly as possible.

The United States Department of Homeland Security does not currently have an official statement about the computer outages, but says that there is no indication of a coordinated cyberattack.

Keep in mind, trading in stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange can still continue even when the NYSE is down. Most stocks trade on both the NYSE and the NSDAQ, along with other dedicated electronic networks. Only about 20 percent of the trading in NYSE listed stocks actually occur on the New York Stock Exchange. The majority of the volume has been moved to other exchanges in the past.

THIS COMES IN THE WAKE OF PROBLEMS IN GREECE AND CHINA

Currently, the Dow Jones industrial average is down 230 points to 17, 546. The NYSE technical outage comes as investors were already worried about the debt crisis in Greece and a drop in Chinese stocks.

There are 11 other stock exchanges available, says an official at Themis Trading. There is redundancy in the stock exchange system and stocks can continuously be traded fluidly.

TECHNICAL GLITCHES HAVE AFFECTED THE WALL STREET JOURNAL AND UNITED AIRLINES

This NYSE glitch occurs on the same day as a technical glitch affected United Airlines flights around the country for about two hours. The Wall Street Journal’s website has also stopped working after the NYSE suspended trading.
