Extensive #AIDS and #HIV research has lead to the discovery of a new #drug that could prevent the spread of the #HIV virus. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/04/hiv-prevention-drug123

A new study found that PrEP, a drug created to prevent the contraction of HIV, is showing success at mitigating the virus’ spread.

HOW THE STUDY WAS CONDUCTED

More than 650 people receiving PrEP were evaluated for the study over a period of more than 2.5 years. The average age of the participants was 37, and 99% of them were men who were having sexual encounters with men.

During the period, no new HIV infections were recorded. The report was published Wednesday in the Clinical Infectious Diseases medical journal.

The research was led by Dr. Jonathan Volk of the Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center, where the tests on the study’s participants were conducted.

WHAT THE STUDY MEANS

“Our study is the first to extend the understanding of the use of PrEP in a real-world setting and suggests that the treatment may prevent new HIV infections even in a high-risk setting,” Volk said in a statement to the press. “Until now, evidence supporting the efficacy of PrEP to prevent HIV infection had come from clinical trials and a demonstration project.”

As the study was done in a “real-world setting,” it has exciting implications and provides another layer of evidence for PrEP’s potential.

MORE OUTREACH IS NEEDED

However, as most of the study’s participants were men who had sexual encounters with men, the press release noted that the study’s researchers acknowledged that outreach is still necessary for other groups that are at a risk for HIV, like heterosexual women and men and transgender women.

HIV DRUG: WHAT IS PrEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a HIV prevention drug that is often recommended to be used everyday by people “at ongoing substantial risk of HIV infection” according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). An important thing to note is that it is not a vaccine and even if taken properly, it does not provide absolute protection from the virus.

It is estimated that a person taking PrEP has a 92% smaller chance of contracting HIV than someone who isn’t taking the drug, which was approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2012 according to TIME. Check out these infographics that the CDC made to learn more about PrEP.

%Here is some news that will not make #parents happy, now, that schools are about to open and head #lice will become one of the most popular concerns.% - http://clapway.com/2015/08/22/mutant-lice-resistant-to-treatment-101/

Here is some news that will not make parents happy, now, that schools are about to open and head lice will become one of the most popular concerns.

According to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about six to twelve million infestations by lice get recorded every year in the U.S. in children 3 to 11 years old.

Ouch.

HOW DO LICE SPREAD?

Lice do not jump or fly and it’s all a matter of hair and head contact. The only bridge that helps them travel from one head to another is the other head itself:

“It[‘]s really head-to-head contact, lice do not jump, they do not fly, it is all hair-to-hair, head-to-head contact,” Diane McGinley, Owner of Shiny Strands says.

Of course there are drugs that can help parents with their children’s lice but what has been really difficult to control are the nits, which are their eggs, and some chemicals are not strong enough to eradicate them.

BUT NOW WE HAVE A BIGGER LICE-PROBLEM

A new head lice strain that has become resistant to the conventional, chemical treatments has appeared in the U.S., according to health officials.

A new study, presented Tuesday at the American Chemical Society meeting and funded by Sanofi, a pharmaceutical company that owns Sklice lotion, which contains a newer generation lice-fighting chemical, says that in samples from 25 of the 30 states, there were insects that had resistance genes. In some samples, including ones from California, Florida, Maine and Minnesota, every insect in the sample did.

And as Kyong Sup Yoon, associate professor of biological sciences and environmental sciences at Southern Illinois University says, people are going to have a very hard time fighting the lice with permethrin or pyrethrin based products.

According to a CNN report, lice resistance is not something new and it started in the mid 1990s in the United States. Head lice remover manufacturers suggest that parents be sure to eliminate nits from the scalp of the infected person, which are attached to the base of hair and hatch in about eight days.

HOW TO ELIMINATE NITS

The first thing you do in order to fight the new species of the resistant lice that appeared across the U.S. recently is to try higher doses of the standard lice treatments like Nix and Rid, which contain over-the-counter permethrin.

“Tell you[r] child that if he or she takes their coat or sweatshirt off during recess, don’t make a pile of jackets. No matter what you use, if it’s a chemical or all-natural, there isn’t a shampoo or magic formula that will just completely eradicate head lice,” McGinley of Shiny Strands suggests.

Some alternative methods suggest olive oil, mayonnaise, and vinegar on a child’s head but remember that after the treatment you have to vacuum the area, wash bedding and bag everything up. There are some cities where you can hire professional lice checkers and cleaners to do the hard work for you. Google it!

Overpriced Cancer Drugs a Hot Topic in Medical Community - http://clapway.com/2015/07/26/overpriced-cancer-drugs-a-hot-topic-in-medical-community425/

The concern about overpriced cancer drugs

Since cancer was discovered by humans, the search for suitable ways of treatments has been a hard one. Even more hard sought is a possible cure.

However, for now, many are focused on the topic of overpriced cancer drugs. The questions of affordability come to mind in the face of rising prices, especially for those who could barely afford the cancer treatments in the first place.

The journal article on the concern

In response to the continually overpriced cancer drugs in the medical practice, a group of doctors came together to publish a piece in the Mayo Clinic Proceedings recently. In the piece, the doctors expressed their concern that the high costs for the drug treatments affect patient care, in helping them to battle cancer or treat it.

Among the one hundred and eighteen doctors that made up the group of people that expressed concern over the overpriced cancer drugs was Dr. Ayalew Tefferi of the Mayo Clinic. His work consists of working with leukemia patients, among other things.

To get a better idea of the issue on the high costs of the cancer drugs, picture that you made an income around the fifty thousand-dollar mark; and the cost of some of the drugs even with health insurance is nearly twice that much. This is not taking into consideration how much you would have to pay yourself, if health insurance cannot cover it.

The other side of the spectrum

For the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing Association, they did not agree with what the doctors wrote in the article. They argued that it failed to take into consideration how much cancer drug cost figures into the demographic of the total spending on cancer treatments.

They also mentioned that to follow through with the suggestions mentioned in the article would inhibit rather encourage the positive changes the article hopes to achieve. To put it simply, it would render much of the progress made thus far in cancer treatment in vain.

In the end, both sides continue to make arguments for their sides and the future of cancer drug treatment costs. Neither are relenting in their arguments.

It"s no #secret -- #geniuses don"t alway avoid #recreational #drugs. Do you know your favorite #genius" drug of choice? - http://clapway.com/2015/07/22/fear-and-loathing-in-science-5-geniuses-and-their-favorite-drugs/

While drug abuse certainly presents several obvious risks, plenty of history’s most influential scientific and technological visionaries used drugs. From cocaine to psychedelics, mild-altering substances were often closely associated with their most famous works…

1. Sigmund Freud – cocaine was his “wonder drug”
