Candy E-Cigarettes Are More Tempting to Children than Medical Marijuana - http://clapway.com/2016/01/18/candy-e-cigarettes-are-more-tempting-to-children-than-medical-marijuana-123/

A new study from the University of Cambridge reveals that e-cigarettes that are bubble gum or chocolate flavored attract children into trying and buying them. The vapor sticks are now the most widely used nicotine product for children in countries with strict tobacco control policies.

The Use of E-cigarettes by High Schoolers Tripled Between 2013 and 2014

The exact figures declare that the rate of high schoolers using e-cigarettes in the United States went up from 4.5% to over 13%. Middle school students using e-cigarettes using e-cigarettes went up from 1% to 4%. In England, use of these sticks in people between the ages of 11-18 went from 5% to 8%.

These findings have raised many concerns to the academia and regulatory bodies. The attraction that younger kids have to e-cigarettes might lead to tobacco use and addiction. As things stand, e-cigarettes are advertised in more than 8,000 flavors. These include anything from fruits to sweets. The candy-like flavoring is the most concerning, as younger people are more attracted to them.

Children Are Mostly Exposed to Sweet Flavored E-Cigarettes

The Cambridge study was published in the journal BMJ Tobacco Control. The researchers took 598 children and split them into three groups. One group was shown advertisements for candy-like flavored e-cigarettes while the second was shown ads for non-flavored cigarettes. The third group worked as the control group and saw no advertisements.

After the jump, the groups were asked questions in regards to the appeal of using e-cigarettes. They were asked about tobacco smoking, the harm in smoking and their reaction to the ads. The goal was to gauge if they were interested in buying and trying e-cigarettes. Group one responded that they liked the ads and had increased interest in buying and trying e-cigarettes. None of the groups expressed interest in tobacco smoking.

E-Cigarettes Are More Attractive than Medical Marijuana.

This study proves that e-cigarette smoking doesn’t make tobacco smoking more attractive. However, it doesn’t take away from the appeal of e-cigarettes themselves, which is also a nicotine product. There’s a lot that regulators need to take into account as e-cigarettes become more widespread.

There’s no exact study on the appeal of medical marijuana on kids though exposure might be at similar levels. However, using marijuana is a significant leap upwards in the scale of drug use for young people under 14 compared to e-cigarettes. Accessibility and financial feasibility are very different for medical marijuana. As it is introduced into several states with time, it will be regulated more closely. The same will definitely happen for e-cigarettes.

One-fifth of teenagers who have smoked e-cigarettes admitted to also using the device for smoking pot, according to recent survey, which included responses from 3,800 students from five high schools in Connecticut.

Less than a decade ago, e-cigarettes were an obscure product marketed by a single company in China. Today, electronic cannabis delivery devices have turned into a trend among teenagers in the U.S.

Experimenting with vaporizers

As electronic cigarette use is increasing rapidly among high school students, researchers started to wonder if younger generations were inventive enough to use the devices to vaporize cannabis instead of e-juice.

“To better understand how students were using e-cigarettes or other portable vaporizing devices to vaporize cannabis, we asked students, ‘Which of the following have you used to smoke marijuana?"” scientists wrote in their new paper on the subject, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

Vaping weed

Researchers found that of the teenagers who admitted to being so-called dual users – having smoked both e-cigs and marijuana – 29 percent said they had vaped dried pot leaves, while 23 percent had used e-cigarettes to vaporize hash oil, and 15 percent to vape THC-infused wax.

Unlike a spliff, which involves actual smoke and combustion, a vaporizer turns substances into aerosols that can be inhaled by the user. Little is known about the health effects of vaping pot versus smoking it.

Researchers believe teens may be using e-cigarettes to consume weed for the added potency, or because it’s harder to detect than smoking.

“When you vape cannabis, the smell is way less pungent and strong than it is when you smoke pot,” study co-author Meghan Rabbitt Morean, an assistant professor at Oberlin College said. “Everybody kind of knows that characteristic pot odor.”

The rise of the e-Joint

Businesses promoting liquid THC claim it contains “all of the healing benefits of cannabis without the psychoactive effects”. They argue it is the easiest way to consume cannabis for the novice user as it is difficult to smell and easier to transport than traditional marijuana.

“It’s possible that teenagers are using pot in a much less detectable way,” Morean says.

Researchers now know it’s happening, but more questions remain about who is consuming pot this way and the extent to which it is damaging. The next step is to collect similar evidence from other states across the U.S. to see if vaping cannabis is just a passing fad or a permanent trend.

E-cigarettes are reported as 95% healthier than actual cigarettes, but the #CenterofEnvironmentalHealthinCalifornia will take sue many #E-cigarettes. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/05/e-cigarettes-cancerous-110/

VAPING ISN’T AS SAFE AS YOU THINK

E-cigarettes have been reported as 95% healthier than actual cigarettes, but the Center of Environmental Health in California is about to take legal action against some of the best known brands of these substitute cigarettes after some testing on the toxic chemicals in them.

A study by the CEH finds that 90% of e-cigarette companies produce at least one brand that produced high levels of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, both of which cause cancer, birth defects and reduced fertility. The figures show that 50 of 97 products studied contain both of these components in levels that violated the California safety standard, even in the nicotine-free versions of the products. Some of these exceeded the standard by 10 times, and seven of them exceeded it by 100 times.

A CALL TO ACTION

This incident has caused e-cigarette use to come under question, even inspiring an initiative to ban them despite the fact that e-cigarettes remain a healthier alternative to actual cigarettes. While supporters claim that e-cigarettes facilitate quitting, the fact that they contain these cancer-inducing chemicals cannot be ignored. Executive director of CEH, Michael Green, says that the tobacco industry has campaigned many lies about cigarettes, and that e-cigarette companies are now doing the same, and that their studies ineffably show that vaping is not as safe as it has been broadcast. In fact, despite the fact that vaping doesn’t include the inhalation of smoke, they still contribute to the risk of spreading of nicotine from secondhand smoke. Some products studied even contained toxic metals in the vapor.

The CEH is invoking California’s consumer protection law, and this is the second time they’ve commenced legal confrontation with e-cigarette companies. Previously, they’ve engaged in legal confrontation to warn users about the nicotine risks in their products.

FDA REGULATIONS FOR E-CIGARETTES PENDING

Over a year ago, the Food and Drug Administration made a ruling to allow e-cigarettes to be as regulated as traditional tobacco products, but said ruling is still winding its way through the approval process. This latest ordeal has inspired many California counties to implement a smoking ban on these products, both aiding CEH and bringing awareness to citizens about the dangers of e-cigarettes.
