Pamela Anderson has just announced that she is hepatitis-C free after going through treatment. She first contracted the disease in 2002, after sharing a tattoo needle with then husband Tommy Lee.

The actress is counting her blessings and hoping to spread them to other patients. There are around 150-200 million people around the globe that have the disease, and treatment is not always easy to come by or affordable, and Pamela Anderson expresses her concern for this in her announcement. This disease causes cirrhosis of the liver that can sometimes require a transplant, as well as fatigue and nausea. Despite its latest FDA scandal, Gilead Sciences filed a New Drug Application to Japan’s Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, who approved the company’s once daily oral tablet hepatitis C treatment.

Harvoni, the name of the mediation, along with Gilead’s other hepatitis C treatment regiment Sovaldi, represent about 60% of the company’s revenue, and they hope to see an increase in their stocks as this project moves forward.

The company expects a 9.3% increase in stocks, and analysts are speculating that this move may just be what puts Gilead back on the market. Harvoni and Sovaldi have always been Gilead’s saving graces, and being top of the line in class regimens, it was only to be expected that these two medications would be what saved them from the inevitable plummet caused by their most recent run-in with the US FDA.

The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning that AbbVie’s Viekira Pak and Technivie drugs for hepatitis-C treatment can give patients serious liver injuries. Once this statement was released, AbbVie’s shares took a serious dip while Gilead Sciences’, their main competitor, soared.

AbbVie’s Shares Drop, it’s Competitors Gain

Gilead Sciences, on the other hand, has had its shares go up 6.4% to $108.10. One of AbbVie’s collaborators, Encata Pharmaceuticals, has taken a hit because of this statement and had its shares drop 32% to 27.12. Achillion Pharmaceuticals, known as ACHN, which is developing its own drug for hepatitis-C, has taken a 3.2% rise to $8.08.

Express Scripts was also affected by the FDA’s statement. The company, a pharmacy benefits manager, had made Viekira Pak and Technivie the treatment of choice for hepatitis-C patients in exchange for a discount from AbbVie. Their shares fell 6.1% initially, but they managed to regain some of the loss. In the latest update, its losses are reported at 3.7% to $83.

Comments on the Decline of AbbVie and Rise of Gilead Sciences

On the news, Mark Shoenenbaum expressed that there’s been this kind of impact only because this is the time when people are trying to scour reasons to sell or buy stocks. Reactions to news like this tend to be overreactions. Although ISI is sympathetic to the market environment, but in this particular instance, the impact is unfounded and difficult to understand.

Now the company is contraindicated in both, but they sustain that this should not impact their current prescribing patterns, as they were not likely used in these patients under their old label.

More patients each year

The number of patients who report suffering from hepatitis C has risen over the years and in the last year only, the number of released prescriptions has doubled. According to doctor Douglas Dieterich at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, this happened due to an increase in the willingness of people to be treated. While this seems to be due to the efficiency of newer drugs which have less adverse effects, the fact is that results are the same if not worse in terms of the curing rates. “When I started in 1989, I used to have a 3 percent cure rate. Now I have a 3 percent failure rate,” said doctor Dietrich. In this case, why should people buy more expensive drugs?

Low competition and high demand allow for high cost of pill

Harvoni seems to have obvious advantages compared to other hepatitis C drugs in terms of its low impact on the patient’s lifestyle. It only needs to be taken once a day and for a maximum of 12 weeks, without requiring the simultaneous administration of other drugs. By comparison, its cheaper competitor, Viekira Pak, should be taken four times daily. While the latter is reported to be equally effective, simplicity seems to be the main factor in choosing drug treatments. But choosing exorbitantly expensive drugs just for the sake of easy administration seems like a weak argument.

Solutions?

DRX surveys of private health plans indicate that the patients on Harvoni benefitted from a 13.7 discount between the months of April and June. Jim Yocum, the DRX executive vice president, worries that this will influence cancer drug companies in pushing for more expensive drugs on the market. In the meantime, Medicare is forbidden to have its say in the drug pricing strategies. Solutions seem scarce at this present moment, but Cara Miller, the spokeswoman for Gilead, has stated that the company is trying to widen the accessibility of its product to the public by working with private insurers.
