Obesity Becoming A Huge Problem in New York City - http://clapway.com/2015/12/02/obesity-becoming-a-huge-problem-in-new-york-city123/

One of the biggest issues in the world today is undoubtedly people who are obese. Add on to that how big of a city New York City is and how many good foods there are there, and this problem is escalated. People are seeming to become more out of shape every day. This is a huge case in New York City as obesity numbers there have increased dramatically over the last two decades.

Obesity New York City

OBESITY IN NEW YORK CITY

Obesity is not an easy thing to stop. It is the result of not getting enough physical activity, not eating correctly, and other factors. The big one is eating unhealthy and that is the hardest to stop for most people. Good tasting foods can be as addicting as nicotine and alcohol. Now we shift to the problem that is arising in New York City. Statistics was given by The State of Obesity: Better Policies for a Healthier America and it noted how New York City is actually the 12th lowest obese state in the country. However, the amount of these people there is increasing rapidly. The State of Obesity states how the percent for New York City was only 9.3 in 1990 for people who were obese. Shift forward ten years and they had them at 17.1 percent. However, currently they have their rate at 27 percent. In 25 years, the rate has risen nearly 20 percent there and that is hard to believe.

WILL OBESITY CONTINUE TO GET WORSE IN NEW YORK CITY

As this trend of percentages of the obesity rate of New York City, from The State of Obesity, continues, it does not seem likely that the rate will decline. Each decade the rate has gone up 10 percent, so with this trend in 2025 the rate will be around 37 percent. It is absolutely crazy to think how bad it has become. The rate is not rising slowly, it is rising rapidly and why should we believe that that will change?

Obesity is a Privilege in the UK, You Have to Pay More to be Fat - http://clapway.com/2015/11/30/obesity-is-a-privilege-in-the-uk-you-have-to-pay-more-to-be-fat123/

Much like in the days of the Renaissance, when the higher your weight was equal to the height of your status, the UK is making obesity an expensive privilege. The British government is adding a 20% tax to all junk food, sodas and all other unhealthy foods.

Obese People in UK

A Quarter of British Children Are Obese

With the increasing rate of obesity in the United Kingdom, many children are unable to participate in the active parts of their education. British people are citing food and drink advertisements as one of the leading causes of the gluttony that springs obesity, as well as product placements in TV shows. They’re calling for the government to impose a ‘sugar tax’ on soft drinks and a general tax on unhealthier foods so people are less compelled to buy them.

The secret to the success of junk food is accessibility. People can get a complete meal (though some will argue that it’s mostly empty calories) for less than $5, and although its at the expense of people’s cholesterol and glucose levels, it’s easy, it’s fast and it’s cheap. Imposing a tax on these foods that will make it just as expensive as a salad at a coffee shop will make people think about the choices they’re making.

Jamie Oliver Takes A Stand Against Obesity

Famous English Chef Jamie Oliver will be taking part on a discussion about bringing down the rate of obesity in the UK at Parliament. The people are encouraging telling people just how much sugar goes into a single can of soda. He will be joined by Helen Jones, chairman of the British Petitions Committee and Dr. Sarah Wollaston, chairman of the Health Committee.

Specifically, they’re calling for a 20% sugar tax on sodas, a ban on guilt lanes (the racks of sweets and sodas just before the cash register) on supermarkets and other grocery establishments, as well as a halt on any ‘buy one, get one free’ sales on junk food. They also call for a change in the advertisements played on TV, especially during times when popular TV shows like the X-Factor and football matches are on so that there is a limited number of advertisements with junk food and fizzy drinks.

In a surprising turn, they’re also calling for a comedown with the cartoons normally associated with junk foods, such as the Kellogg’s cartoons and the Dairylea cow, which target children and entice them into asking to buy these unhealthy foods. The committee is also demanding a label on all sugary foods stating exactly how much sugar spoonfuls there are in each serving of the product, and they’re calling for an end to free soda refills at restaurants, fast food chains and cinemas, and an end to supersized portions.

Any Country With High Obesity Rates Should Take Notes

The demands posed by the committee are somewhat strict, but could prove to be effective. According to the World Health Organization, 74% of British men and 64% of British women will be obese by 2030, so it’s only natural that the UK takes preventative measures, but it’s worth noting that most of the demands will do all countries a world of good.

New Research Reveals Beer Bellies Can Kill You - http://clapway.com/2015/11/11/new-research-reveals-beer-bellies-can-kill-you123/

New research reveals that people should be weary of beer bellies, as people with fat around their middle are at higher risk for dying early than even the obese. Central obesity, the study finds, increases the change of early death regardless of BMI.

People with central obesity have less muscle mass, which does increase mortality risks, but this study focused on people with beer bellies specifically against people that are classified as overweight or obese in regards to factors including death rate.

Beer belly - clapway

The Study

15,184 between the ages of 18-90 participated in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and the study looked at their body fat distribution as well as deaths assessed through records, and this it was confirmed that there is a connection between central obesity, specifically beer bellies, and early death.

This study has since inspired a slew of modifications from physicians all over the medical community. The data proves risks to an important fragment of the population, and preventive measures must be taken.

This Doesn’t Mean the Obese Are in the Clear

The complete findings are published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine, and it urges people to measure belly fat alongside their BMI as it could be the difference between death by beer bellies or a healthy quality of life. This, however, does not mean that people with obesity have a lower risk of dying early.

For a long time, type 2 #diabetes was only seen in adults. But the increasingly poor lifestyles of many people, children included, has led to a correlated increase in the prevalence of #type2diabetes, especially considering that #obesity is a huge contributor to insulin resistance. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/17/three-year-old-girl-type-2-diabetes123/

A three-year-old girl was diagnosed in 2013 with type 2 diabetes, after her parents brought her to doctors at the University of Texas complaining of excessive urination and thirst. She has since reversed the condition through treatment.

What Leads to a Childhood Diagnosis?

Upon examining her, doctors at the UT clinic for pediatric endocrinology established that the girl had no family history of diabetes. However, her diet “consisted mainly of fast food, candy, and sugary drinks, and she hardly ever played outdoors.” She was also in the heaviest five percent of children her age, weighing a little over 77 pounds. Her parents were also obese.

This instance may represent the earliest lifetime diagnosis of type 2 diabetes to date. Type 2 diabetes occurs when the body develops a resistance to insulin, the hormone produced by your pancreas that metabolizes sugar. Insulin resistance means that the body has trouble converting sugar into energy, and the glucose builds up in the bloodstream instead. If left untreated, diabetes can be life-threatening.

For a long time, type 2 diabetes was only seen in adults. But the increasingly poor lifestyles of many people, children included, has led to a correlated increase in the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, especially considering that obesity is a huge contributor to insulin resistance.

Reversing Childhood Diabetes

Thankfully, this girl’s diagnosis was reversed after six months of treatment. Doctors prescribed her the liquid form of a drug called metformin, which helps reduce glucose production by the liver. Perhaps more importantly, they worked with her parents to swap out sugary drinks for water, fast food for home-cooked healthier meals, and inactivity for walks, swims, and outdoor playtimes. Within half a year, she had lost 25% of her weight, her blood sugar levels had normalized, and she was able to stop the metformin treatments. Today, at age five, she is symptom-free.

Taking Proper Precautions against TYPE 2 Diabetes

Genetics are also a factor in the onset of type 2 diabetes, but a healthy lifestyle can go a long way for most in working to prevent the disease. Early screening and diagnosis is also important for reversing symptoms, especially in children. Warning signs include excessive thirst and urination, blurry vision, irritability, and tingling or numbness in your extremities, among others. If you’re worried about you or your children’s risk of developing the disease, see a doctor!

We all know that #obesity is linked to a host of other diseases. Now, a new study points out that you could develop #AlzheimersDisease sooner if you’re #overweight. - http://clapway.com/2015/09/01/obesity-alzheimers-disease123/

Obesity has previously been associated with an increased risk for developing Alzheimer’s disease; now, a new study points out that you could also develop the disease sooner if you’re overweight.

Researchers looked at midlife risk factors that could set off Alzheimer’s

The study, published in Molecular Psychiatry addressed the effect midlife obesity had on the onset as well as the severity of Alzheimer’s disease. The Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, a population-based cohort was used in this long-term study. Data was obtained for 1394 cognitively normal individuals, who were followed up roughly every 14 years. The basal metabolic rate (BMI) at the age 50 was used as a marker of midlife obesity. Participant brains were scanned for the presence and extent of tangled protein or plaques, which are like the cellular signatures of a brain with Alzheimer’s disease.

Midlife obesity associated with early Alzheimer’s onset

142 of the total number of participants developed Alzheimer’s during the span of the study. The researchers found that for every unit increase in midlife BMI, the onset of Alzheimer’s was 6.7 months earlier. They compared autopsy brain samples and brain imaging samples from non-demented participants, and found that participants with higher than normal midlife BMI had worse neuropathology. This means that higher BMI is associated with more protein tangles, which indicate worse disease outcomes.

Controlling midlife obesity could stave off Alzheimer’s

Although the study did not establish that midlife obesity causes Alzheimer’s disease, the strong correlation points to the possibility of delaying the onset of this debilitating disorder by maintaining a healthy body weight. It is believed that risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes that are often coexistent with obesity could, as a combination, raise the risk for Alzheimer’s. While the mechanism for the observed effect isn’t clear, the researchers speculate that obesity puts the brain at a higher risk of inflammation and thereby a higher risk for developing the neurodegenerative condition. Alzheimer’s disease exacts tremendous amount of societal as well as economic resources; it is slated to become a trillion dollar disease by 2050. Therefore, lifestyle changes that could delay the illness would drastically relieve the economical burden and improve the disease-free quality of life for the older population.

Diets that are rich in #fishoil versus those that are rich in lard produce very different bacteria in the stomachs of mice, which can reduce #inflammation and #obesity. - http://clapway.com/2015/08/31/fish-oil-obesity-inflammation123/

Diets that are rich in fish oil versus those that are rich in lard produce very different bacteria in the stomachs of mice. These findings, which are now published Cell Metabolism, are reported on in a study from the Sahlgrenska Academy.

Probiotics Could Help Protect You from Obesity - Clapway

MICE THAT RECEIVED MICROBES ASSOCIATED WITH FISH OIL HAD LESS CHANCE OF DIET INDUCED WEIGHT GAIN

To come to this conclusion, researchers transferred microbes into mice to see how they affected the overall health of the animals. The mice that received the transplant of microbes associated with a fish oil diet were protected against diet-induced weight gain and inflammation, whereas the mice transplanted with gut microbes associated with a lard diet were not. This research demonstrates that gut microbes are an independent factor associated with aggravating inflammation and that probiotics might help counteract the effects of a greasier diet.

SCIENTISTS WERE DETERMINED TO FIND OUT IF GUT MICROBES MADE A METABOLIC DIFFERENCE

The scientists stated that they were determined to figure out whether or not the gut microbes directly contributed to the metabolic differences that are associated with diets rich in healthy and unhealthy fats. Although the study was conducted on mice, their ultimate goal is to identify interventions in healthy humans.

MICE WERE FED FISH OR LARD FOR 11 WEEKS

The researchers worked in a lab and fed either lard or fish oil to the mice for 11 weeks and monitored the signs of metabolic health. Although the consumption of lard promoted the growth of bacteria, which can be linked to gut inflammation, the fish oil diet decreased the abundance of bacteria that is known to reduce weight gain as well as improve glucose and metabolism in mice.

Despite having the same energy content and the same amount of dietary fiber, the scientists were surprised to find that the lard and fish oil diet resulted in different gut microbiota communities, which influences overall health in significant ways.

Firstborn Women More Likely to Be Overweight #obesity #overweight #sisters - http://clapway.com/2015/08/28/firstborn-women-overweight123/

While firstborns may bask in the glory of having slightly higher IQ than their younger siblings, when it comes to their body weight, the news is not so good. A recent study revealed that firstborn women are more likely to be overweight.

The study looked at sister pairs from the Swedish national register

In line with previous research that birth order affects body weight in men, scientists from the University of Auckland wanted to find out if a similar relationship existed for sisters too. Published in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health, this study examined the prenatal clinic records from the Swedish National Birth Register and followed up for a period of 20 years spanning 1991 to 2009. The register was started in 1973 and has the record of virtually all births in Sweden. Totally, 303,301 girls were born between 1973 and 1988 and these women gave birth between 1991 and 2009. Only first and second born women were selected for the study resulting in 13,406 sister pairs. Their weight and height were assessed at birth and, next, at the time of their first prenatal visit (3 months into pregnancy). Twins were excluded from the study.

Firstborn women: Birth order influences their bodyweight

Firstborn women were found to be lighter at birth than their younger sisters. However, during their first three months of pregnancy, the firstborn sisters had a 2.4% higher BMI. Overall, firstborns were 29% more likely than their second born sisters to be overweight and 40% more likely to be obese. In addition, firstborn women were more likely to be taller (1.2 mm) than their younger siblings in adulthood. Though this might seem like a negligible difference, it corroborates what researchers call the resource dilution hypothesis, which states that as the size of a family increases, there’s less to go around, thereby diminishing genetic resources for each additional child.

The reduction in family size may be contributing to the rise in adult BMI

This study is purely observational and even though comparing sisters ruled out common genetic factors, nutritional and physical activity variables could have been responsible for the observed difference. Still, the study examined a large sample of the population, and found a considerable spike in the BMI of firstborn women. Also, this supports similar findings in men, where birth order affects both their height and weight. This warrants further studies to explore the metabolic health issues that are unique to firstborns.

Water Before Your Meals Helps With Weight Loss #obesity #water #weightloss - http://clapway.com/2015/08/27/drink-water-weight-loss123/

Something we already knew was important has further proven itself invaluable to human existence – water. According to a previous study completed at Boston College, two-thirds of Americans do not drink nearly enough water each day. This is a frightening statistic as two to three quarts of water can be used by the body everyday for a variety of purposes, from body temperature regulation to nutrient metabolism, and joint, organ and tissue cushioning, states Sheila Tucker, the Administrative Dietitian of Boston College Dining. According to a new study lead by Helen Parretti, a lecturer at the University of Birmingham, water is also an efficient source to prevent excess weight gain and help with weight loss.

Published in the September issue of the journal, Obesity, the experiment included 84 obese participants. Each person was given specific directions for the amount of water they should consume each day; participants were randomly split into one of two groups, where they had to either: 1) drink 500 ml of water 30 min before their main meals (intervention group [41]) or 2) visualize being full before having their meals (control group [43]).

Guzzle before You Chew For Effective Weight Loss

The study began with 30 minute face-to-face weight management consultations for each participant, followed by a 10 minute follow-up telephone consultations after 2 weeks. “At 12-weeks, participants who ‘preloaded’ with water reduced their body weight by 1.3 kg more than participants in the control group,” said Peter Janiszewski, Ph.D. According to an article posted on the Daily Mail, participants also lost 9.48lbs (4.3kg) over the span of twelve weeks.

To ensure accurate result, the experiment was completed a second time in regards to characteristic differences such as ethnicity, age, and gender.

Weight Loss: 2 Cups a Day, Keep The Pounds Away

The results of this randomized study display similar correlations to prior epidemiological studies that prove “caloric intake in water drinkers is on average 200 calories less than among non-water drinkers,” according to Janiszewski. “The results provide compelling evidence to encourage all those attempting to lose weight to increase their daily intake of water to help in their efforts. Specifically, one should consume approximately 2 cups of water, about half an hour prior to most meals.”

Heavy Smoking Associated with More Weight Gain #smoking #weightgain #obesity - http://clapway.com/2015/08/24/heavy-smoking-weight-gain123/

Many smokers delay quitting out of weight gain concerns. While quitting has been associated with weight gain, the story isn’t that simple, as a recent study points out.

The study looked at the 10-year weight gain of a nationally representative sample

The study compared the weight gain among current smokers, smokers who quit between 1-10 years ago, and people who have never smoked. A total of 12,204 adults were selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The study gathered the baseline Body Mass Index (BMI) and the average number of cigarettes consumed per day for each group. The never-smokers served as a control to look at the average weight gain of the non-smoking demographic over the same time period. At the end of the 10-year period, the weight gain that can be attributed to quitting was calculated by the difference between the adjusted mean weight of quitters and that of continuing smokers.

The heaviest of smokers gained the most weight upon quitting

The 10-year weight gain of continuing smokers was 7.7 pounds compared to 18.5 pounds for people who quit smoking. This results in a weight gain attributed to quitting of 10.8 pounds. However, this difference in weight gain is inconsequential in former smokers who smoked 1-14 cigarettes per day. The highest weight gain (22.7 pounds) was noticed among former smokers who smoked at least or more than 25 cigarettes per day. Another important factor influencing the post-quitting weight gain was the baseline BMI at the start of the study; obese people gained more weight after quitting.

Why do people gain weight after quitting?

The study clearly defined the factors that could be associated with increased weight gain after quitting: heavy smoking and obesity. While this shouldn’t be an incentive to stop quitting, it’s interesting how the body responds to the lack of nicotine in the system. It is well known that nicotine is an appetite suppressant and a metabolic stimulant. The absence of nicotine increases the appetite and dulls the heightened metabolic status. Also, people could use food as a comfort to help with the nicotine cravings. Together, these factors could result in weight gain.

Weight gain may seem like too high a price to pay for quitting. However, it is a relatively manageable obstacle in an otherwise right decision to a healthier, longer life.

Did you know that bacteria could help you quit smoking?

%VitaminD pills are quite popular, but scientists suggest that providing #obeseteenagers with many of them may have adverse consequences.% - http://clapway.com/2015/08/16/vitamin-d-pills-dangerous-teenagers-101/

Vitamin D pills are quite popular, but scientists suggest that providing obese teenagers with many of them may have adverse consequences. The new research of Mayo Clinic Children’s Center on childhood obesity advises that vitamin D pills may elevate adolescents’ cholesterol and fat-storing triglycerides levels.

VITAMIN D IS NOT THAT BENEFICIAL. YET.

Dr. Seema Kumar, a pediatric endocrinologist from Mayo Clinic, has been studying the effects of vitamin D for 10 years, but recently she came up with a discouraging conclusion:

“After three months of having vitamin D boosted into the normal range with supplements, these teenagers showed no changes in body weight, body mass index, waistline, blood pressure or blood flow,” she says, “We are not saying the links between vitamin D deficiency and chronic diseases do not exist for children – we just haven’t found any yet.”

VITAMIN D PILLS ARE NOT SLIMMING

While teenage obesity has quadrupled in the past thirty years, many studies indicate that vitamin D deficiency can lead to a series of weight-related medical complications. As a result, worried parents and providers increase the recommended daily intake, in an attempt to fight the clinical complications associated with obesity.

Dr. Kumar, however, notes that the pills’ popularity as a homeopathic weapon against obesity is what made her want to study their effects on overweight teenagers, a population at increased risk for chronic disease.

BE CAREFUL WITH THE INTAKE

Dr. Seema Kumar says that she is surprised that she and her team haven’t found more health benefits, but she made clear that, while vitamin D supplements at reasonable doses are not harmful at all, their usefulness for improving overall health in adolescents is still not clear.

Also, if you ingest too much vitamin D, you will suffer from  a condition called hypervitaminosis, which can result in poor appetite, nausea, vomiting or even kidney complications.

Coca-Cola Want People To Ditch The Diet And Keep Drinking Coke - http://clapway.com/2015/08/10/coca-cola-want-people-to-ditch-the-diet-and-keep-drinking-coke123/

According to reports recently released by The New York Times, Coca-Cola has been funding a non-profit group to encourage Americans to pay more attention to their exercise regime and less towards their diet.

It is well known that obesity has become an extremely worrying health concern in the United States and many western countries over the past years. This is something that has been discussed numerous times in the media and as a result, consumers have become more health conscious and aware of the dangers of fast food.

However, even though many studies have shown the negative outcomes as a result of consuming fizzy drinks such as Coca-Cola, health experts hired by the company have been researching the benefits of the product and have recently released new information promoting the positive aspects of the drink.

Coke Less Dangerous than Believed?

In accordance with The New York Times, Coca-Cola have been spreading the message that the popular fizzy drink is not as dangerous as previously believed. This has been further promoted by scientists hired by the company through social media, at conferences and in medical journals.

Records show that $1.5 million was donated last year by Coca-Cola to begin an organization – the Global Energy Balance Network. However, health experts are skeptical towards the companies motives behind this campaign, especially as soda sales are currently in a decline.

Americans Consume Less Sugary Drinks

It seems that over the last two decades, the average American has reduced his consumption of full-calorie sodas quite considerably, drinking 25 percent less.

Therefore, the fact that Coca-Cola have recently hired a new group of scientists to convince people that exercise can make up for an unhealthy diet has caused a lot of suspicion towards Global Energy Balance Network.

Is the Coca-Cola Company Trying to Manipulate People?

Of course, this is not the first attempt the company has made to try and associate their product with a healthy lifestyle. According to reports, at the beginning of the year, nutrition, as well as fitness experts stated that a mini-can of Coca-Cola was believed to be a ‘healthy treat’.

While a can of Coca-Cola once in a while will do you no harm, it is definitely worth taking into consideration all aspects of a healthy lifestyle and what is right for your body on a daily basis, rather than simply going by reports from international companies.

Health Benefits of Standing -- Over Sitting - http://clapway.com/2015/08/02/health-benefits-of-standing-over-sitting-245/

A new study shows that those who spend more time standing in comparison to those who sit more often were associated with all the health benefits of standing — including lower fasting plasma glucose, triglycerides, and cholesterol. Researchers attached a monitor to almost 700 participants over a seven day period and found for every two additional hours spent sitting were significantly associated with a higher body mass index, and waist circumference.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF STANDING INCLUDE LIPID METABOLISM

The study was done at the University of Queensland in Australia and appeared in the European Heart Journal. Sitting is associated with fasting glucose and lipids were independent of moderate to vigorous physical activity, according to the researchers. Associations with the adiposity markers and the 2-hour plasma glucose weren’t statistically significant after they were modified for exercise.

These findings provide important preliminary evidence of the potential health benefits of standing for cardio-metabolic risk makers and especially improved on their lipid metabolism. This study shows that there are important public health implications because sitting is a very common behavior.

SPENDING MORE TIME SITTING INCREASES ALL-CAUSE MORTALITY

A lot of research has been done on the detriments on sitting and a recent meta-analysis found that those who spend a lot of time sitting in chairs face a higher all-cause mortality risk, independent of whether or not they exercised after sitting. But exercise has been shown to lead clear benefits for adults and children who lead otherwise high sedentary lifestyles.

In the study, they also found that replacing two hours a day of sitting time with stepping was associated with a lower BMI and lower triglycerides and higher HDL cholesterol. This study offered an important contribution to the amount of evidence pointing to the need to avoid sedentary behavior.

ACTIVITY WHILE AT WORK BURNS MORE CALORIES THAN WORKING OUT

A person who walks while at work for 2 hours, stands for another 4 hours, and does other daily chores at home for another hour will burn more calories than those who jog or run for an hour. Data was taken from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle Study, which began in 2000 but went under its third data collection in 2011 and 2012.

There is #hope for #America yet. - http://clapway.com/2015/07/27/americans-are-eating-healthier-234/

The diets followed by people who live in the United States have been discussed on many occasions. The fact that the rate of obesity had been increasing was an issue of full awareness. What is new is that Americans’ eating habits began to change, and this time they are not worsening.

The fact that the consumed calorie percentage has dropped might appear unexpected, and, unfortunately, this doesn’t change the obesity rates at this moment. However, the news that Americans are now eating healthier foods and drinking less sugary beverages is extremely promising. Furthermore, this is the first time the calorie consumption has a significant decline in 40 years since the government began tracking the food consumption.

Obesity Rates have Stopped Rising with Healthier Eating

As stated above, obesity is still an enormous problem in the US since over a third of America’s population is obese. However, the proportion has stabilized. It seems that when it comes to adults and children who are already going to school, the rates of obesity are not rising anymore. Furthermore, when talking about younger children the rates have also dropped. Both African Americans and European Americans stopped eating as many calories as they used to. But the change varies from one group to another.

Significant Fall in the Level of Sugary Sodas

The impact sugary sodas have on our bodies is known by everybody. But this didn’t stop people from consuming large quantities of sugary beverages. In accordance with the report, the average American has cut down on soda consumption by 25 percent in the last 25 years.

Americans Still Don’t Eat Healthy Enough

According to the study, it seems that both lower income families, as well as families with high income, have been cutting down on calories lately. While this is fantastic news, doctors say that there is still a lot more to carry out.

The fact that Americans don’t eat enough fruit and vegetables, and still eat junk food instead, remains a problem since unhealthy eating and manner of living can actually be the cause an impressive number of diseases, like diabetes or cancer. However, the fact that the consumption of calories has a much lower rate shows that healthier eating and lifestyle in the US will be improved over the next years.

People with Obesity Unlikely to Lose Weight - http://clapway.com/2015/07/17/people-with-obesity-unlikely-to-lose-weight697/

Losing weight is difficult for all of us, yet it’s harder for some than for others. A recent study shows that when it comes to obese people, this task is close to being impossible to achieve.

According to a new study, most people who are obese have extremely low chances to return to a normal weight. The scientist at King’s College, in London, affirmed that the results to their study showed there are very low chances for obese people to have a normal weight.

Obese People Have a 1 in 124 chance to Have a Normal Weight Again

The recent study was funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). There were 278,982 participants (129,194 men and 149,788 women). Their weight was tracked using electronic health records from 2004 to 2014.

The aim of the study was to find the probability of obese people to attain normal weight, or a 5% reduction in body weight. In order to estimate the weight change, the scientists used a minimum of three body mass index per patient.

Obese People Tend to Regain the lost Weight

All doctors recommend losing at least 5% to 10% body weight since it has been shown to have meaningful health benefits. However, according to the researchers’ results, most people don’t manage to lose weight at all.

It appears that the chance of losing between 5% and 10% weight is just one in 12 for men and one in 10 for women.

In addition, the scientists found out that, more than half of those who did manage 5% weight loss, regained it within the next 5 years.

These results show how difficult it is for people who have obesity to achieve and maintain even small amounts of weight loss.

Obesity Is a Serious Problem

Even if there is a high number of people who don’t seem to be taking this issue serious, obesity is an alarming problem.

All health officials warn people all over the world that obesity should be treated as a serious global public health epidemic.

According to the World Health Organization, the disease has more than doubled since 1980. In addition, it seems that almost 40 percent of adults measured were obese in 2014.

These are the reason why, in order to deal with this issue and to find treatment for obesity, new approaches are needed.

Able to Imagine the Smell of Food? You Might be Predisposed to Obesity! - http://clapway.com/2015/07/08/able-to-imagine-the-smell-of-food-you-might-be-predisposed-to-obesity-126/

For many of us the smell of some kinds of food makes it difficult to stop from eating, even if we shouldn’t. Even if people are more and more scared of obesity, anyone able to smell but refuse a chocolate cake, for example, is considered to be quite a strong person.

It is a known fact that the smell of food can give us cravings, even if the body doesn’t feel the need to eat something. However, recently a new fact has been discovered: It appears that even an imaginary fragrance can give people insatiable desires.

According to an early research, obese people were likely to have overwhelming cravings based on smell. In addition, on the authority of a new study, obese people are predisposed to imagine the taste of food in a more vivid manner than people who are skinny. Also, the differences in visualizing smells can actually be an important explanation for cravings.

CAN IMAGINATION GENERATE OBESITY?

The researchers who applied D.J. Kavanagh’s elaborated intrusion theory of desire, which states that a mental image of cake might trigger a craving that’s quite hard to pay no attention to, conducted the new study at the John B. Pierce Laboratory and the Yale School of Medicine.

The experiment was based on more than 80 people and each of them had to complete a questionnaire. All questions were related to their ability to imagine visual and odor cues. They were asked to rate the vividness they experienced.

In accordance with the results, people who can imagine the smell of foods at a more vivid rate, have a considerable risk of obesity. This study was created to be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Society for the Study of Ingestive Behaviour (SSIB) in Denver and it gives us interesting results.

However, the ability to smell food is the tricky business, when it comes to obesity and this is the reason why, according to researchers, future studies will focus on measuring smell ability and not self-reported ratings.

Rearranged "Food Order" for Those on a Type 2 Diabetes Diet - http://clapway.com/2015/06/25/rearranged-food-order-for-those-on-a-type-2-diabetes-diet765/

When it comes to being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes, restrictions immediately begin to follow. The most evident of the restrictions have to do with eating, to the point where it has been stated by experts that most foods are to be avoided, as opposed to being consumed in moderation. Fortunately, a recent study featuring people on a type 2 diabetes diet shows that avoiding foods is highly unnecessary, just as long as they are eaten in a specific order.

Significance of type 2 diabetes diet on glucose and insulin levels

Not only is the type 2 diabetes diet significant to individuals suffering from the disease, but it also applies to those suffering from obesity as well. The main food groups these diseases tend to focus on are protein, fruits and vegetables, and carbohydrates. In previous years, two groups that were considered to have a significant negative impact on glucose and insulin levels were fruits and carbohydrates. This is due to both of these food groups raising blood sugar at highly drastic, potentially dangerous, levels. According to researchers of studying the matter, “Carbohydrates [and fruits] raise blood sugar, but if you tell someone not to eat them -or to drastically cut back- it’s hard for them to comply.” Following this statement is the breakdown of the recent study of the type 2 diabetes diet itself.

A new study further breaking down the typical type 2 diabetes diet

Featuring 11 participants, the study had them eat two different sequences of type 2 diabetes diet meals, one for each week. In the first week, the participants ate carbohydrates and fruit juice first. A few minutes later, it was followed by vegetables, fat, and protein. During the second week, vegetables, fat, and protein were eaten first followed by carbohydrates a few minutes after. While the participants were eating in two different orders for the next few weeks, their glucose levels were taken. There were many findings and, a new phenomenon was revealed.

A potential new food order for the type 2 diabetes diet

Researchers found that when the participants were eating carbohydrates first and vegetables afterwards, glucose levels proved to be a lot higher than when they were consuming vegetables and protein beforehand. Although more research and studies need to be conducted in order to fully confirm this new finding, it is safe to say that this new food order of eating veggies and protein before carbs is a good bet for Diabetes Type 2 patients.
