Hurray for excuses to go on #vacation -- why maybe that #overtime is not terribly worth it - http://clapway.com/2015/08/20/longer-hours-of-working-hard-for-the-money-may-kill-you-242/

If you need a vacation from your job, you may want to consider booking a ticket this week as a new study has linked working longer hours to an increased risk of stroke and heart disease. Working even as a little as one extra hour a day ups a person’s chance of suffering a stroke, so cash in your vacation time now to keep yourself healthy.

Longer Hours Increases Risks of Stroke and Heart Disease

The study findings revealed people working between 41 to 48 hours a week had a 10 percent higher chance of having a stroke. Workers falling in the 49 to 54 hour range upped their chances by 27 percent. Most frighteningly of all, those putting in over 55 hours a week showed a 33 percent higher risk of suffering a stroke.

All in all, the study analyzed over 600,000 people from 25 studies based in Europe, the United States and Australia for an average of 8.5 years.

One of the main authors, Professor Mika Kivimäki of the University College London said that health professionals should be made aware of the increased risk of stroke and heart disease, especially considering they work the longest hours.

But what exactly is to blame when it comes to working longer hours and our risk of developing deadly health conditions?

Risky Health Behaviors Associated with Longer Hours of Work

The main culprit behind the increased health risk appears to be how stress affects your body over longer periods of time. But there are other factors in the elevated risks of health complications, too.

Though the stress of longer hours at work could be linked to poor health cardiovascular health, the researchers in the study could not prove definitively that it is the only cause of more health risks. The researchers took into account other factors associated with high stress jobs that involve longer hours. These factors include smoking and drinking as well as lower physical activity levels, all of which put the hard worker at a higher chance of developing cardiovascular disease or having a stroke.

Study Says Even Occasional Longer Hours Ups Health Risks

Many studies have shown the negative side of working longer hours as seen in adverse health conditions, including higher blood pressure and women taking a longer time to conceive.

There are certain things high-stress job workers can do to help ameliorate and combat the stresses of their workdays. Most doctors would urge these workers to get up and move. Nutritionists would add that perhaps a change of diet would alleviate stress. Even changing the work environment may be helpful for workaholics who need to stay in their zen zones to reduce their chances of stroke and heart disease.

Still, if you work hard for the money, you may want find a way to cut down on the longer hours for the sake of your health.

Major Pollution: Massive Mine Waste Spill in Animas River - http://clapway.com/2015/08/08/pollution-in-animas-river-101/

AN UNFORTUNATE EVENT

Everyday, the news has to break a series of unfortunate events, some of which inevitably concern pollution. Today’s news is no different.

When the news first broke out amidst Colorado mainstream media about the mine waste spill in the Animas River in Colorado, reaching all the way to Farmington, New Mexico, everyone was wondering who did this and why natural environments must be so polluted.

Coverage by Colorado news outlets like the Denver Post, reported that around the mine waste spill was had one million gallons of wastewater spill into the Animas River from an abandoned mine. The result was the once clean waters now run an orange tinge.

TRACKING POLLUTION AS IT SPREADS

The question regarding who caused the mine spill was answered when in the same outlet source the EPA acknowledged the spill was caused by their mistakes. How did this major pollution happen?

The EPA had been using some heavy equipment to examine some pollutants at the Gold King Mine when it inadvertently let loose the contamination into the river. Officials are now examining the river to see the effects it will have on the ecosystem due to the variety of contaminants in the mine waste spill.

Shortly after the accident, which occurred in the morning at 10:30am, the EPA later released a statement late Wednesday (around 10:40pm) about how they will address the mine waste spill and what to do about it. You can find the EPA’s regulations about reporting oil spills and other such hazardous spills here.

THE AFTERMATH OF POLLUTION

The orange tinge is the visible result of the mine waste spill caused by the EPA that is now flowing into other water systems that flow as far as Farmington, NM. Samples are being taken from the contaminated water sources for further concerns.

However, not all are swayed into relief efforts by demonstrations thus far. In a press release by the Center of Biological Diversity dated to yesterday, the issue of federal officials downplaying the concern of the mine waste spill in the Anima River is brought to full bore.

The river contaminated flows into other river systems such as the San Juan River that goes into New Mexico and Utah. The San Juan River is home to several species of endangered fish and birds that are already suffering from the pollution of present contaminants. The downplaying raised troublesome doubts and questions about what the long term effects of contamination will be.

In the press release, the center will be taking actions. The actions include inspecting the EPA’s efforts in accordance to various laws in place involving endangered species, hazardous contamination and spills.

Study suggests a connection between wireless devices and cancer - http://clapway.com/2015/07/25/study-suggests-a-connection-between-wireless-devices-and-cancer678/

A bit of Background for the connection

Cancer has always been very concerning in and of itself, especially when it is afflicting those you know and around you. This is why the WHO organized the International Agency for Research on Cancer to help find causes, cures, and treatment for cancer.

At a certain point in time in May 2011, the International Agency for Research on Cancer classified RFR, or radiofrequency electromagnetic fields, as a possible carcinogen to people. This was due to the rising concern of the negative health effects from continual exposure to RFR via wireless devices, thereby beginning the connection between wireless devices and cancer.

Research suggested that these RFR might have long-term effects and may increase the risk for cancer. Although the evidence for the research was judged to be inadequate, new research suggests that might have been a call made too soon.

The connection between wireless devices and cancer

A review study that was published in the Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine on the 7th of this month took on the task of looking over that connection between wireless devices and cancer. The press release for the research said that the study suggested a metabolic imbalance caused by the radiation from wireless devices could be a factor for many health risks.

The study goes on to explore the effects of low radiofrequency radiation has on the metabolism and has shown some signs of what is called oxidative stress. The presence of this type of stress may help to explain a number of illnesses that can arise after being exposed to RFR for too long.

What does this mean?

With all the data of the study about the connection between wireless devices and cancer, researchers of the study have concluded that there is a connection between the two. The exposure to low RFR acts as a danger to living cells that cause oxidative stress to arise, which then can lead to numerous health ailments.

As a result of the connection between wireless devices and cancer, the researchers also asked the public to be leery of using said devices for reasons of health concerns. Only more research can be reveal if the truths be behind concerns are set in stone.

Nearby Fracking May Be Causing Locals to Go to the Hospital - http://clapway.com/2015/07/17/nearby-fracking-may-be-causing-locals-to-go-to-the-hospital434/

Rising concern about fracking’s impacts on local health

The history of fracking is one filled with controversy, and never bodes well for the health of local residents involved. Even for those not a part of the industry, fracking has inadvertent and extremely harmful effects.

To emphasize how much of a concern it is, a study was conducted with PLOS to give some scientific proof of how the process is very aversive to the health of the public. The dangers of fracking is not new news or even new concerns, and there is even a website dedicated to the aforementioned risks.

One has to wonder with all the information about the danger of fracking out there, how it continues but there is no easy answer to that. In fact, the fracking industry only seems to be steadily growing.

Protests

The study in and of itself is a form of protest against fracking for the sake of the health of others and presents findings that indicates that yes, fracking has led to higher hospitalizations of locals for such things such ailments such as heart, neurological, and others. This is because the locals are exposed to the noise and toxins the process releases and the overall stress adding to their bad health.

This is not even the first fracking that has been protests in the U.S., in fact, a few months prior in April in the Southwest, on the Navajo Reservation, fracking went underway as well. There Navajos underwent a thousand-mile walk to help raise awareness for the dangers of fracking and in protest of it.

The danger of fracking was nothing new to the tribe; in the olden days of the 30s, 40s, and 80s, the land had been subject to a long history of mineral mining and also negligence from the mining industry in the past. The concern about fracking in the year 2015 after such a long history is no surprise and the wariness even more high because of the history.

It’s more than just hype

According to the data, thus far there have been an estimation of almost 200,000 hospitalization cases in the area fracking are being conducted in the state of Pennsylvania. Time will tell if the concerns are addressed.

FDA Warning: Pain Relievers May Not Be Your Friend - http://clapway.com/2015/07/10/pain-relievers-may-not-be-your-friend654/

FDA warns public about pain relievers

Everyone loves pain relievers for one thing, their ability to take away all the sores and pain from whatever ails at the moment. However, the FDA is strengthening its warning about pain relievers and how they increase the risk for heart attack and stroke from the ingredient known as NSAID, or Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug.

NSAID, for those who don’t know, is one of the more common pain relief meds one can get and is used to treat a variety of pain symptoms. But also it is used to lower swelling and fever.

The Risks of Pain Relievers

Although there is already a written warning on all boxes of pain meds warning of the risk of heart attacks and strokes, the FDA is increasing the seriousness of the warning. Researchers are not sure exactly what is causing the attacks to occur, but the unfortunate side effects can occur in the first few weeks after taking a pain reliever.

It is important to remember that if you are continuing to use NSAIDs, then the risk of having those attacks increases. Also, it is noted that although aspirin contains NSAID, the risk warning does not apply to the medication.

Further warnings

Naturally in prescriptions there may be times when your doctor or physician prescribes more than one medication for you for pain management or other reasons. In these cases, considering the topic of discussion, you should avoid taking multiple meds that contain NSAID.

The reason being that other prescription medications contain NSAID. So if you were to take more of the same ingredient, naturally your risk of attack goes up exponentially.

Right now, the FDA is calling for manufacturers to update the information that is printed on medication both prescription and over the counter. The updated information with medication containing NSAID will be more specific in its risks of heart attacks and strokes. The FDA is also requesting that the manufacturers update their facts page about the pain reliever ingredient, NSAID.

Unfortunately, if you have already suffered a heart attack or stroke and you take pain relievers with NSAID, then the risk for you goes up as well. This means millions of Americans that suffer from heart disease and heart attacks are at an increased risk of having another attack in taking the medication. Even dying in their vulnerable state, which is why the FDA is issuing out the increased warnings about the NSAID ingredient to the public for their awareness.

Presence of Brucellosis at Yellowstone Has Science Panel Convening - http://clapway.com/2015/07/03/presence-of-brucellosis-at-yellowstone-has-science-panel-convening987/

Why in the world is there brucellosis at yellowstone?

Lately, there has been a presence of Brucellosis at Yellowstone in livestock, especially bison and elk populations. This disconcerting presence has officials talking and now have a team of people to convene in a panel to talk about the aforementioned problem. The team of people was assembled by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

It is also a concern with Brucellosis because there is a risk of people getting infected with it although the bacteria usually infects livestock such as sheep, cattle, pigs, dogs, and other animals. The CDC has said that people who come in contact with the infected animals or animals products made from them can contract the bacteria, thereby spreading it in the human community as a result.

Sincerity in Managing Efforts for Brucellosis at yellowstone

Ryan Clarke of APHIS told the National Academy of Sciences group, “We want you to . . . help us see a future path for actions we might take to address brucellosis in the Greater Yellowstone Area.“ Clarke later went on, saying that although they reached a dead end, they are looking at other options and are open to advice as to what to do next.

Complications

However not everyone is as hopeful in finding a solution to managing the presence of Brucellosis at Yellowstone. “Reducing the prevalence of brucellosis in bison in the park would take decades and decades of work and would still not change how the animals are managed and would still leave many bison carrying the disease,” said P.J. White, Yellowstone’s chief of wildlife resources on the finding of the earlier scientific results.

Complications such as one mentioned above make decisions on how to handle the situation and the next step forward difficult and no easy feat to manage.

What can you look out for?

Some of the symptoms that accompany this infection are: having a fever, headache, lack of appetite, malaise, fatigue, possible depression, and other concerning symptoms. All in all, at first it seems very innocuous and can be mistaken for a regular cold perhaps.
