The car maker has is honoring MLK by investing in education. Toyota Financial Services is supporting Historically Black Colleges and Universities and their communities. The company will give $60,000 grants to the Tom Joyner Foundation and five other institutions. These scholarships will help many students get and complete a college education.

The Rate of Black Graduates is Low

$10,000 scholarships will go to Bennett College in North Carolina, Tuskegee University in Alabama and South Carolina State University. Toyota will also give two $10,000 grants to Texas’s Wiley College and North Carolina Central through the Tom Joyner Foundation.

Tom Joyner Foundation gives support and scholarships to more than 80 institutions. This investment is a much-needed one. Education is the base of all success. The Japanese giant has given a great gift dedicated to black students. Toyota is definitely looking to help boost the positivity and spread it.

The Honda Ridgeline 2017 does comes with a 3.5 litre engine that reaches upwards of 550 horsepower and takes the same block, cylinder heads and crankshaft as its predecessor. This race truck, according to the company, is designed to be set apart from the production Ridgeline, making it a pickup with ‘true truck capability’. Honda will be running in the Baja 1000.

The car is set to be made in North America, specifically in Alabama, and footage reveals that it’s basically a 2017 Pilot in the front with a little more junk in the back to make it more faithful to the racer concept. Honda has dropped Takata Corp as its airbag supplier, and the company’s stocks have dropped 13% since the breaking of the airbag explosion scandal. US auto regulators have linked 8 Honda car deaths to Takata airbags, prompting the car maker to drop their ties to the automotive parts company, resulting in a $70 million fine in settlements.

The eight reported deaths were caused by Takata airbags, which use ammonium nitrate. This compound can explode under too much force or by being exposed to high humidity for an extended period of time, and it sprays fragments of metal inside vehicles. This is also only the first of the many bills Takata will receive since the root of the airbag defect hasn’t been discovered yet. If this forces Honda to issue a recall, Takata could face a steep downfall. As things stand, Honda takes up about 10% of Takata Corp’s global sales, which is about 38% of their total revenue. After an aggressively worded statement, Honda declared it could not and would not use Takata airbags any longer, particularly because of evidence that suggests that Takata Corp could have manipulated data to fit regulations.

The cost to recall and repair the damage to the airbags could well exceed the corporation’s current market value, which stands at around $820 million. Since 2008, Takata airbags have been the reason behind the recall of around 40 million cars. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration attached an additional command to the $70 million fine for the company to stop using ammonium nitrate in their products.

Takata Said to Be the Cause of Death

26 year old Jewel Brangman passed away after sustaining injuries to the neck and head while driving a rental Honda Civic that featured Takata airbags. As has become the case in a number of incidents relating to the airbags, too much force caused them to explode and send metal shrapnel flying. The airbag was determined to be the cause of Brangman’s death not only by Honda itself, but by the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. As a result of these determinations, Jewel’s father has filed a lawsuit against Honda and Takata, as well as the establishment where she rented the car.

What Went Wrong With the Takata Airbags?

The consensus is that the reason for the Takata airbags being so unreliable and dangerous stems from the use of ammonium nitrate. The major risk that comes with ammonium nitrate is that when it is exposed to moisture, it becomes highly unstable. When ammonium nitrate becomes unstable, it burns faster. And when it burns faster, the metal canister in the airbag that’s meant to contain the explosion breaks apart. These explosions have now resulted in eight deaths from the Takata airbags.

More Vehicles are Being Recalled

Honda has added one million vehicles to an already immensely large amount of cars being recalled due to the Takata airbags. The total now is up to nearly an astonishing 34 million vehicles. And Honda is not the only company reeling from the Takata controversy; Toyota has been forced to recall cars too as have General Motors and several other companies. Many of the recalled vehicles are models from 2003-2007.

Honda Claims They Tried to Prevent This

The Brangmans may be suing Honda as a result of the defective airbags, but Honda is working hard to cover themselves. Honda representatives claimed that in June 2013, they notified Sunshine Car Rental LLC of an airbag recall, but that their warnings went unheeded. In fact, this car was supposedly part of a recall that first started all the way back in July of 2009 and that up to four notices were sent for the car to get repaired.
