On Wednesday, Apple had their annual iPhone unveil in San Francisco where they announced the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus. This year, however, they also announced a new revamped version of the Apple TV. For $149, you can now get a fancy new streaming set-top box and a shiny new microconsole, too.

THE NEW APPLE TV

Several weeks ago, we ran a story about a new Apple TV rumored to show up at Apple’s iPhone event, and it looks like most of what was discussed ended up coming to fruition. The new Apple TV has a brand-spanking new 64-bit A8 processor, and sports 802.11ac Wi-Fi support, too.

The device is about 11-millimeters taller than its predecessor. It’s also kept the same HDMI, power, and ethernet connections. The 32GB will run you $149 and the 64GB is a modest bump up to $199.

APPLE TV = MICROCONSOLE

The most interesting part of the new Apple TV is its gaming capabilities. When Apple announced that it was going to show off the Apple TV, it also made mention of an App Store that will allow developers the opportunity to create games for a brand new operating system called tvOS. When the new Apple TV launches in October, it will be launching with a few games, too: a multiplayer version of Crossy Roads, and a collection of rhythm-based mini-games by Harmonix called Beat Sports.

CAN IT SUCCEED?

Here is where you’ll get slapped with an opinion. The new Apple TV will most likely get a lot of attention from the same casual gamers that help mobile games like Clash of Clans make millions of dollars a day. But the reality is console gaming and mobile gaming aren’t even remotely related. They’re supported by two different audiences.

So far, the games announced for tvOS are based on mobile games, which are fun when you need to kill a few minutes at a time, but you won’t be spending entire afternoons diving into the world of Crossy Road – not like core gamers will with Fallout 4 or Metal Gear Solid 5, at least.

Now, that’s not to say that there aren’t some really good mobile games. You Must Build A Boat is one that comes to mind, which I sunk hours and hours into. But again, it was all done in between commercials, while standing in lines, and maybe even during a bathroom break or five.

Development is also a crucial part of the equation. Console developers already have to develop for PC, PS4, PS3, XBox One, Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS, and the Wii U. Support for the Wii U has dropped considerably for third-party developers because the platform is so different and the audience isn’t there for it. The PS3 and XBox 360 are also starting to miss the boat on some releases due to dated hardware, not that you should expect to see AAA titles released with something sporting a mobile processor.

But it leaves a burning question in my mind: where are all of these microconsole players? The Android-based Ouya suffered a quick but painful death due to a lack of audience. I can only see the same fate for the gaming aspect of the new Apple TV.

Apple TV And Its Survival as a Gaming Console

Microsoft Xbox Gamescom is kicking off this week with a press conference focusing on what games the powerhouse is looking to release in the near future. Microsoft Xbox Gamescom is a German videogame trade fair, much like Comic-con, where you will see costumes and characters represented in amazingly unique ways. It is said to be the world’s largest computer and gaming expo. The conference started at 10 AM EST, and many games have already been confirmed as either having sequels or being new to their territory. Here are a few things Microsoft Xbox Gamescom has released so far:

Crackdown 3

This game takes you into a futuristic city where evil is lurking in every shadow, and your goal is to save the city from a dangerous criminal empire. According to IGN, this game will feature transforming vehicles and a very destructible game world, and since it will be running off Microsoft’s cloud, the game is expected to have much more processing power than the Xbox-one console. This exciting new game will be available to play in summer 2016.

Quantum Break

This time-travel game is not lacking excitement or intrigue. The storyline is a fantastic one, and you’ll recognize many faces. Quantum Break is still expected to have an in-game live action show, as previously promised by Remedy Entertainment, and it will have an affect on the outcome of the choices you make with your character in the game.

This game will be released for play in April 2016.

Scalebound

Platinum Games graciously gave those in attendance at Xbox Gamescon conference it’s first look at this new Xbox-one action game. This game takes you to a hostile, new world and has you battling various creatures, with the help of your friend – a massive dragon – but what stands out the most with Scalebound is it’s four-player cooperative mode. Things are sure to get chaotic, which every gamer love, so several in the gaming world are expecting Scalebound to be a big success. However, many are drawing visual comparisons to Devil May Cry, and arguing that the main characters have similar “personality” traits as well.

Irony is when a country manufactures every major gaming console on the market, but bans its citizens from owning one. All of that is set to change, however. According to The Wall Street Journal, China will finally be lifting this 15-year ban. The country’s Ministry of Culture will be allowing Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony to both manufacture and sell their gaming consoles everywhere in the country.

What this means for the industry

China had already made some modifications to its restrictions last year when the country allowed console manufacturers to operate in Shanghai’s free-trade zone. On September 29, 2015, Microsoft brought the Xbox One over. Sony then brought the Playstation 4 over on March 20 of this year.

By China opening the doors all across the country, console manufacturers now have a huge market to target all future gaming console sales.

Growing Fears of ‘Wasted Youth’ in China Brought About the Ban

Gaming consoles were originally banned in China all the way back in 2000. Many parents believed that gaming consoles would cause their children to waste too much of their time with the devices. As a result, the government believed the best plan of action would be to ban all companies and individuals from producing and selling electronic gaming equipment and accessories.

Of course, this didn’t stop people from gaming, nor did it fix the “problem” parents were hoping the ban to fix. Plug’n’play consoles were a legal alternative to gaming consoles, and many players (like Nintendo) released these alternatives to keep China gaming.

China’s Golden Age of Gaming

Even though the console ban isn’t strictly enforced, the ban has had a major effect on gaming culture in China. While it’s possible to obtain an illegal console through the gray market, most people are content with playing mobile games or games via the web. Now that Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo are able to get their consoles into the country via legal means, China will undoubtedly see a huge increase in the quality of games. The real question is, how long will it take before China decides to jump on the gaming console bandwagon?

Facebook releases its first ever Messenger game, Doodle Draw.

If you love games, then the Facebook messenger is the most “happening” location for you. Facebook just came up with its first game, Doodle Draw, and it is already creating a buzz among people. In the recent F8 conference where developers came from around the globe, major announcements were made, the most striking being games for the messenger. Facebook announced that the third party developers can now integrate varied features within the messenger application. The most key feature was that the messenger will be able to host games.

 

The Doodle Draw game is engaging and easy to play.

On that note, Facebook launched its first game. It is called Doodle Draw, and you can download it at App Store on Android, IOS, and Google Play Store. Being 4MB, the interactive game will let the users play with their Messenger contacts. All you are required to do is just scribble doodles within the game and share them with your friends in the Messenger contact list. On the other end, the receivers will have to guess the doodle and answer. The more one wins, the more colors can be accessed. The user has a chance to earn in-game currency simply by referring the Doodle game to others.
