Uber reached one billion passengers over the holidays, and to celebrate, it’s partnering up with Facebook Messenger, StubHub and United Airlines. So long, Lyft!

Uber Brings in Trip Experiences

The personalized cab service is on the lookout to make riding more fun, especially since a lot of customers use Uber for longer rides. As such, Uber brought in third party app developers to send notifications and other content to passengers upon getting permission from the riders.

This is the first major update the app has released since the Ride Request service update launched back in March 2015. Trip Experiences brings in music playlists that are completed exactly by the time you reach your destination. It also gives users news subjects on different categories. It also helps you look into the restaurant or bar you’re on your way to, offering honest reviews. It even allows you to set reminders.

Uber Tramples Lyft

Valued at $62.5 billion, Uber is really breaking ground. Now, it’s spreading out beyond being just a car services. Lyft has given Uber a lot of grief in terms of competition, and these features put it a step ahead. The service has even tested food delivery services in the US. Allegedly, they are now working on acquiring and operating self-driving cars.

By bringing in third-party apps, Uber takes things one step further. New Messenger for OS X and Windows Could Not Happen At All

Since this is a leak, there’s the chance that this desktop app never sees the light of day. It could be an app in testing, something that was designed only for internal use, or something that will get scrapped by tomorrow morning. Facebook was also tinkering with a standalone Windows application, but it was shut down after two years.

However, the lack of support for multi-chat clients has been heavily criticized in the past.

This is not even the surprising part, though. The statistics provided showed the top 10 services per monthly users. Google Hangouts was not even in the top 10. They are even behind KakaoTalk with 48 million monthly users.

THIS CHATBOT TECHNOLOGY IS WHAT GOOGLE HANGOUTS NEEDED

As seen by the statistics, Google Hangouts desperately needs a selling point. As of right now, there is no reason to switch to Google Hangouts. However, if this artificial intelligence technology turns out to be as good as it sounds then there might be a reason to switch. Google needed to massively spice up Google Hangouts. The good news is after this they will be ahead of the other messaging services. This does not necessarily mean by downloads, but by the product itself.

The company has made no bones about the fact that the main aspect they were focusing on was speed. Bonforte mentions how users want services that allow them to connect with people quickly and easily. Bonforte talks about the fact that users will be able to upload images in groups. Basically, users do not have to upload images one after another. Instead, they can upload dozens of images at once. On top of this, Bonforte mentioned how the overall speed of messaging and sending photos has improved. He said they did a test and it took less than a second for the photo/message to be received by another user. Bonforte also stated that users will get access to GIF’s insanely quickly as they will be available to users within seconds.

YAHOO ALSO ADDS UNSEND FEATURE

Does anybody send a message or photo without thinking about the consequences? Or has anybody ever sent one of these things on accident? Well, Bonforte explained that they will allow users to delete their sent message or photo in their messaging app. He also said it does not matter how long it has been up, it can be erased at any time. Sometimes people say stuff without thinking. There are also times when people accidentally hit send when they do not want to. Adding this feature will add a backup plan just in case this happens.

WILL YAHOO MESSENGER NOW BE BETTER THAN FACEBOOK, WHATSAPP, AND SKYPE?

Just like with any comparison of products, it is mostly a matter of opinion. However, Bonforte has shown some confidence that users are going to eat this up. He has not officially stated that it will, but he has hovered around the idea. If Yahoo Messenger is indeed faster than all the others, then that is a big factor in determining which app is better.

Expect the Unexpected With Facebook

Tech companies are always trying to find a way to expand their services in order to stay as relevant as possible, so it really isn’t all that surprising that Facebook is looking to do the same. Currently still in testing, the Facebook store is limited to less than 100 participating companies. It’s a small test for what the company hopes to be a foray into a very lucrative future.

How is This Going to Work?

Details about the new Facebook stores are surprisingly light and the testing phase raises more questions than it answers. While products are planning to be displayed on a special shop section of the trader’s page, the company hasn’t directly confirmed whether or not Facebook will be the actual platform that will host the transactions.

Facebook has been experimenting with “Buy” buttons placed on the pages of the products, and users aren’t expected to have to actually leave the site in order to complete the transactions either. Instead, a transaction should be able to be completed via a checkout method involving the money transfer capabilities of Facebook Messenger.

While many people would call Facebook a social media site, the idea of a Facebook store reinforces the idea that it is here to sell advertising space.  YouTube Gaming is part of an effort to correct a YouTube failure.

According to YouTube’s Ryan Wyatt, global head of gaming partnerships, YouTube “never really built gamers the experience they deserve,” with respect to live-streamed video. He tells us that the app was developed from scratch “for gamers by gamers,” and that now gaming videos won’t be blended in with a bunch of other random content anymore, necessitating lengthy searches. YouTube has stated that it will be launching YouTube Gaming in the United States and the United Kingdom sometime this summer.

Facebook releases its first ever Messenger game, Doodle Draw.

If you use Facebook Messenger, you’d be aware that a new Google Chrome extension map can track your location via Facebook’s location sharing function. The app is called Marauders Map, after the map in the Harry Potter series that tracks people at Hogwarts. It was created by Harvard College computer science student Aran Khanna.

Marauders Map works by taking Facebook Messenger’s location data from its users and plotting the results on a map. Sharing location data on Facebook is a default setting, so unless a user has turned this feature off manually, it is available for you to track your position as you travel. In fact, this new Chrome extension map is said to be able to track your position within a meter of your location.

Marauders Map Can Track Your Location Accurately

The Marauders Map creator says that he wrote the apps code using latitude and longitude coordinates that had over five decimal places of precision, which means it can track your position extremely accurately as you travel. It has caused alarm since it could potentially allow a person to stalk someone and possibly predict their future travel as long as they had access to the message thread of the person they wanted to locate.

Marauders Map to be Disabled, API Key Revoked

Because of this new function, Mapbox has revoked its API key and it will likely soon be disabled so it can’t find people as they travel. However, Facebook Messenger users should still reset their privacy settings so that their location won’t be shared. Additionally, the source code for the Marauders Map was made available to Github, which means some other developer could modify and use it elsewhere to track your location in another form.

How to Disable Ability to Track Your Location on Facebook

It’s not hard to disable the ability for Facebook Messenger to track your location as you travel so you don’t have to worry about stalkers. Just go to “settings,” then “privacy,” and “location services.” A list of installed apps will be displayed so that can track your location. Just locate Facebook Messenger or any other app you want to disable and make sure it reads “never.”
