Apple, Facebook and Sony are all about VR. Microsoft is taking a different approach with their HoloLens by taking a stab on Google Glass. Microsoft is choosing to focus more on augmented reality.


Microsoft Dishes Some HoloLens Details


Not much is known about the details of the HoloLens headset itself. Recently, Technical Evangelist Bruce Harris revealed that the HoloLens may not be wired at all. In addition, he shared that Microsoft is already working on a second-generation version of the headset.


Going wireless is for the best. When it comes to AR or VR, having the freedom to move is the essence of the experience. The headset will be connecting to other devices via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The features of the HoloLens put it in a seriously competitive position. The headset will be able to run any Windows 10 app and can pair up with other headsets to communicate. Users can even share what they’re seeing with other headsets. The device’s battery life is expected to run for 5.5 hours on basic usage. With more intense usage, users will get a minimum 2.5-hour life. Microsoft had to sacrifice quite a bit for this kind of battery life.


The actual vision is akin to having a 15″ screen right in front of your eyes. This may be small in comparison to other AR headsets. The second generation HoloLens might have the technology and materials to bring in something bigger. Nothing has been shared in regards to price though the developer kit is tagged for $3,000. The retail price will hopefully be more accessible.


What of Google Glass?


Google Glass was in the spotlight for a good fifteen minutes. These fifteen minutes revealed that the world just wasn’t ready for smart glasses. The HoloLens comes in as a combination of the Google Glass and the premise of VR headsets, and it could sell exceptionally better.


Google is reportedly working on a second-generation of Google Glass as well. There is buzz that they may even release two versions, one geared specifically for sports and fitness. Pricing and specs are still AWOL for this, but it could give Google some support in this market.

Smart headsets and glasses are dominating the world of smart wearables, and the new Garmin bike headset is shaping up to the likes of Google Glass and MAD Glass. Garmin Ltd. is a Swiss technology company that focuses on consumer, aviation, outdoor, fitness and marine technology, and they’ve released their own Garmin bike headset. The Varia Vision is the company’s take on keeping you safe on the roads while on your bike.

Just like Google Glass or the MAD Glass, the Garmin bike headset can provide users with traffic information and the distance between the biker and surrounding cars. The Varia Vision also provides bikers with the most important information regarding their cycling. This includes directions, relevant notifications and performance statistics.


What makes the Varia Vision a bit more special is its collaboration with the Varia rearview radar. This radar warns the headset about traffic behind bikers. This will keep bikers safe will keeping their eyes on the road. The headset’s price tag is not bad either, standing a $400. However, it’s likely not the best biking headset on the market.

While they don’t have a rear view sensor yet, it’s very likely that Google Glass will integrate one eventually. Both the Google Glass and MAD Glass feature turn by turn navigation. In fact, there already is buzz in Mountain View about the Google Glass 2 coming in a sports version.

Skully Inc has definitely stolen the show when it comes to motorcycling safety. The Skully AR-1, though pricey, is the best headset out there. It’s got unbeatable features. The helmet is DOT/ECE certified and features intelligent audio, helmet-to-helmet communication and hands-free calling. It even streams music. It naturally features turn-by-turn GPS navigation through Bluetooth from a cell phone.


Most importantly, though, the Skully AR-1 features an actual rearview camera with a near 180-degree view. It is displayed on a head-up display that is built into the helmet’s visor. It is fog, scratch and glare resistant and also serves as the navigation display. In fact, the Skully AR-1 has the ability to save maps in case bikers are headed off-road. On top of that, it also features access to real-time map updates and traffic information.


The most valuable feature of this headset is probably Infinite Focus. This means that the headset’s head up display focuses on the biker’s eye and not vice verse. Navigation and directions fade off when they’re not in use, which saves energy and gives bikers a wider field of vision. The AR-1 helmet is integrated with an app that can adjust the rear-view camera to adjust to different riding positions. The one drawback is that there is a steep difference in price between the Garmin bike headset and the Skully AR-1. The helmet costs around $1,500. But with features like those, it’s actually not a terrible price.

New photos have emerged for the new and improved Google Glass. Functionality is going to remain very similar, however, the design of will be a little different. As of right now, this new version is strictly intended for Google’s Glass at Work partners. Hopefully, Google eventually decides to release this device to the public.

THE ORIGINAL GOOGLE GLASS


As mentioned previously, the functionality for the new Google Glass is going to be much like the original. They are worn just like a pair of eyeglasses, but they do much more than allow you to see. Google Glass can almost be thought of as a hands-free smartphone. They have a few noteworthy features, as well. First, they have a touchpad located on the side of them that allows users to control the device. Using this touchpad allows users to view information such as phone calls, updates, weather, etc. Google Glass also has a built-in camera that records 720p HD video.


THE NEW GOOGLE GLASS


The major changes in this new device are in the design. One aspect that the new design will have is a pair of hinges. These hinges are going to allow users to fold up the glasses, just like a pair of regular eyeglasses. Not only this, but Google is also adding an indicator light to the glasses. From now on, whenever Google Glass is recording something there will be a green indicator light emanating. Also, the only major aspect that Google added to their glasses outside of the design is an external battery pack.


WHO WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THE NEW GOOGLE GLASS?


If you are excited about the new Google Glass, then you might be a little disappointed. This new device, as of right now, is only going to be available to Glass at Work partners. Some of the most notable participants of this Glass at Work program include the Advanced Medical Applications company. The AMA develops Glass-compatible software for various medical workers around the world. Basically, unless you are a Glass at Work partner, you will not be able to enjoy this new device.

Google is tackling all of the world’s most important industries, now going into the medical field with Google Eyes. The company is looking to change the way experts draw blood in an effort to help diabetics measure glucose levels. According to a new application published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, Google is moving in to make diabetic patients a lot happier.

Google Eyes Brings Needle-Free Blood Drawing to Life


There are no need for needles if this invention comes to fruition. Google is designing an instrument tentatively called a ‘Needle-Free Blood Draw’, which sends a shot of pressurized glass into a barrel connected to the skin. A micro particle then makes its way into the body and draws out a small amount of blood. Finally, it gives patients a reading of their glucose levels.


There’s no confirmation on whether or not this will be a legitimate product, but the patent alone is very exciting. Google has been working to devise a different way to measure blood sugar levels for diabetics through contact lenses. It licensed the technology to Novartis last year, and the giant is planning to commercialize the product for patients with diabetes.

The company also has efforts to build a cloud based platform to store information gathered, either from these contact lenses alone or from this new ‘needle-free blood draw’ device. It’s obvious the company is looking to get into the medical industry in small but very sure steps.


Google isn’t’ alone in these efforts. Apple has also made set a few patents, specifically one to built their own HealthKit platform to make new ways to monitor patient’s health. IBM has also dipped its feet on health-related technology. It’s Watson platform is looking to help the medical field as a whole to make more informed decisions. IBM’s hope is that the platform may even be able to find the cure for cancer in the future.

Medicine has always greatly benefited from new technology. They’ve received a tremendous amount of help specifically from robotics, helping to make new medical instruments that can make treatments less invasive and instruments that are smaller and more efficient. An entirely new drone has been created and it is called Fleye. This flying robot is one of the safest, yet most fun, drones in the world. It is also far superior to devices like Google Glass and the Quadcopter.

WHAT THE FLYING ROBOT FLEYE IS


The flying robot drone has many awesome features to it. It has an HD camera, intuitive smartphone control, protective grids, easy to swap batteries, seven sensors, and best of all an onboard computer. This onboard computer is run by a dual-core ARM A9 processor, has 512 GB of RAM, and runs the Linux operating system. Fleye is controlled by using your smartphone and there are various control schemes for it. All of this is great, but the safety of this drone is one of its best features. With its protective grids and circular structure, there is no chance of users receiving injuries from this drone.


A LITTLE ABOUT GOOGLE GLASS AND QUADCOPTER


Google Glass is an optical head-mounted display hardware that is worn like a pair of glasses. This device displays information in a smartphone-like format. The catch is, it is a hands-free smartphone. On the side of Google Glass, there is a touchpad that allows users to control it. A camera is built into Google Glass allowing users to take 720p HD videos. Turning over to the Quadcopter, it is similar to the Fleye. It is also a flying drone that can document videos and photos. However, there is no built-in computer or camera. Instead, there is a GoPro mount on the Quadcopter.


WHY THE FLYING ROBOT FLEYE IS SUPERIOR


The Fleye is simply above Google Glass and the Quadcopter. It is superior to the former because of the advanced features, as well as having more freedom. As far as the Quadcopter goes, the lack of a camera makes it below it. Not only that but also because the Quadcopter is not nearly as safe as the flying robot Fleye. The Quadcopter is not necessarily dangerous, but it does not have the spherical structure of the Fleye.

Google is planning the release of two additional models of Google Glass 2 specifically for sports and enterprise clients. There’s even buzz that one of these new Google Glass devices may not have a screen, which would make for a significant and quite an interesting change.

Google Will Not Give Up on Google Glass


It looks like the upcoming Google Glass 2 will come with a few siblings. Word on the internet is that Project Aura may or may not be working on a few different models of Google Glass, even one where the small screen the gadget is known for is absent.


This specific model will be marketed as a sports Google Glass 2, based on audio-only performance to accommodate active clients that want to have all the perks of Google Glass 2 while on their morning run or afternoon jog.


Project Aura (Not Project Ara) is Also Working on An Enterprise Model


The second half of the rumor reads that Project Aura is developing a Google Glass 2 model for the enterprise market. All these models will be using bone conduction to optimize audio, much like the initial Google Glass.


This is Somewhat Exciting, But Rumors Are Rumors


There’s no confirmation on any of these facts, and there’s even a chance that Google releases only the Google Glass 2 and the sports model. These reports should be taken lightly until more information is released officially.

Google’s Project Ara not a reality just yet


It looks like consumers are going to have to wait even longer for the reality of interchangeable phone parts, as their planned release in Puerto Rico was just put on hold. In January, Google announced that they were planning to use Puerto Rico, citing population diversity as a primary reason.


Why Project Ara Is So Important


According to the official website, the project itself aims to make phones customized for each consumer’s needs and aims to bring internet to an estimated 5 billion people. The traditional way of selling phones has been to have the manufacturer make the phones and ship them out to various vendors for sale. While consumers can already change things in their phone such as color and the occasional different model, Project Ara aims to make a phone customizable by using interchangeable phone parts.


A new form of consumer freedom


Being able to switch parts even while the phone is on has been toted as a feature that makes a large change in the way consumers interact with their devices. Instead of buying a phone for the features, one could in theory buy a phone and switch out the parts they wish to fix or upgrade. Such a concept would shake up not only the phone industry, but open the door for interchangeable tech parts on a variety of consumer products.


What’s next for Project Ara?


The most frustrating thing regarding Project Ara for many is that google has announced a stop to using Puerto Rico as a test market; a setback in and of itself, but hasn’t announced any other concrete plans. The last tweet on the official Project Ara profile did state that the initiative wasn’t going anywhere and that customers should stay updated for the latest news however. There is speculation however, that Google’s new restructuring at the corporate level may have had something to do with the sudden announcement of such a hyped project being put on something of a current indefinite hold. With the tech world currently in limbo over when the next piece of news is coming for Project Ara, consumers will have to wait longer than anticipated for a phone that’s truly customized to their wants and needs.

After Google disbanded its Explorer Program for Google Glass, many fans were left pondering what would become of the device that couldn’t quite find its niche. While many people believed the project to be defunct, news hit in March that Google was actually getting ready to talk about its plans.


What It Isn’t


To say that Google Glass was met with a bit of contempt from the public would be an understatement. The initial program required users to be invited, and then they would need to fork over $1500 for what is essentially a developer kit. Not many people had access to them due to the limitations set forth by Google, and a lot of the explorers found themselves in situations where they were met with hostility due to Google Glass’ ability to record video nonchalantly.


It seems that Google has taken notice of this and isn’t tailoring the Enterprise Edition to meet the same expectations users might be expecting in this 2.0 version. In fact, it’s not really a significant upgrade from the original dev kit at all.


What is Is?


Tony Fadell, project lead on the Google Glass project, has stated that most people won’t even be able to tell the difference between the Explorer Program editions and the Enterprise Editions unless they owned the former.


The Enterprise Edition has been built to be more durable for the workplace. The side housing the device’s internals is built to be stronger in order to withstand typical drops and bumps. Google has also managed to make the Google Glass “more” water resistant, though it hasn’t stated to what degree. The device also looks just a bit more industrial, which is where the device is probably more suited for anyway. The biggest change; however, is that Google Glass is now foldable.


Internally, the prism in front of the lens is larger so the user has a better viewing experience. Google has also thrown an Intel Atom CPU for better performance and improved battery life.


So How Do You Get Your Hands on a Pair?


The device is still in production, but the current plan is that Google will be distributing the Enterprise Edition through its certified list of Glass for Work partners. This means that the general public still won’t be able to get their hands on these, but then again, this version of Google Glass still isn’t as consumer friendly has it will be when it launches on a massive scale.


Currently there is no set release date for the Google Glass Enterprise Edition, but be sure to check back for more details as they come.

Human interface technology pioneer Dr. Tom Furness recently joined Envelop VR, an enterprise software company leader in the field of virtual reality, as its Senior Scientific Advisor.


Furness, also known as the “grandfather of virtual reality,” received the first-ever lifetime achievement award for his 50-year service to this futuristic industry last month, at the Augmented World Expo in Santa Clara, California. “The power of virtual worlds is not in the achievement of technological capabilities, but in the creative possibilities of the human imagination that transform the limits of reality,” Dr. Furness recently said.


Virtual reality for beginners


The promise of virtual reality has always been colossal. According to an in-depth report published by The Verge, “born of technology, virtual reality at its core is an organic experience.” In a man meets machine scenario, “what happens is strictly within the mind,” the authors of the study said.


The modern concept on virtual reality, born in the fifties, was initially pursued by the military that has used the technology for war simulation for years. A small crew of inventors, revisited the “utopian ideals of a VR universe,” in the late ’80s and early ’90s, The Verge reported.

Furness’ work is credited as some of the earliest in developing virtual and augmented reality. Furness is now exploring the next generation of augmenting human potential with profound and ubiquitous virtual world experiences. “His research and development of new interfaces have laid the foundations for virtual reality as we know it today,” Envelop VR said. Bob Berry, Envelop VR’s co-founder and CEO added that having access to Furness’ mindshare “is an added bonus” for his team moving forward in the universe of virtual reality.

Furness said that he has chosen to work with Envelop VR because the company is developing the most essential component for the future of the VR industry.” Founded in 2014, Envelop VR is creating productivity and enterprise software that enables businesses and consumers to create, work and play in an immersive, 3D environment.

Google stopped producing its wearable technology Google Glass in its present form earlier this year, but the company didn’t give up on the idea of developing “augmented reality glasses”. The technology, which has always generated news, will continue to do so.


New details revealed


Following a recent FCC filing discovery, 9to5Google has exposed details of the Google Glass Enterprise Edition. This next version of smart glasses will be designed to being used in the “enterprise space”, as opposed to the Explorer Edition, which was for general consumer use.


The updated Google Glass reportedly features a larger prism display, an Intel Atom processor that will be faster than existing Android Wear smart watches, increased connectivity, faster video streaming, and enhanced battery life.


The next edition seems to be tackling some of the problems that the former Google Glass had, ranging from battery life and heating issues to eyestrain complaints related to the size of the prism display.

Targeting the enterprise market


Tech-experts believe that targeting enterprise costumers instead of consumers will be a total shift in strategy that may shape the future of Google Glass. Earlier this year, in a statement posted to its Google+ account, the company had said that the Google Glass team would move out of the “Google X” incubator labs and become a separate division.

The technology has definitely been at the centre of many cooperate storms but the Google Glass project is not dead. While the next generation of Glass is still in the embryonic stages of development, Stephen Hall posted on 9to5 that several different prototypes of a future Glass hardware revision are being tested within some Glass for Work developers.


The Glass for Work programme which kicked off in 2014, gives potential partners access to the Glass Development Kit.


Earlier this year, Google had joined forces with Italian eyewear company Luxottica – the same company behind Ray-Ban and Oakley – to design the next version of Glass fashionable and something people would like to actually wear.


Although little details have been unveiled regarding the next Google Glass, a new patent published recently gave consumers yet another peek at what it might look like. Google previously said it planned to release new Google Glass editions later this year.

The minds at the Google X experimental group are working on a medical grade wristband so that doctors can track their patient’s vital signs.


In addition to taking a patient’s electrocardiogram (or EKG), the health tracker measures vitals such as heart rate, pulse, skin temperature, and environmental conditions such as light exposure and noise levels.


Data taken by the device could be downloaded by doctors so that they can accurately monitor their patient’s health. Google X is currently seeking regulatory clearance for the device so they can start clinical trials in the summer of 2015.


THE GOOGLE MEDICAL WRISTBAND IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE


The Google medical wristband will not be available to consumers. Instead, Google intends to have the wristband available only to the medical community so that doctors can prescribe the tracker to their patients or that organizations can research new applications for the device.


Google also wants to study the device and determine if it can predict disease patterns and ultimately treat disease.


“Our hope is that this technology could unlock a new class of continuous, medical-grade information that makes it easier to understand these patterns and manage serious health conditions,” said Andy Conrad, head of the life sciences team at Google.


Conrad also wants the device to help prevent disease. “I envision a day, in 20 or 30 years, where physicians give it to all patients,” said Conrad. “Prevention means all the time.”


MORE ACCURATE THAN CURRENT HEART RATE MONITORS


Current heart rate trackers on the market have been criticized for being inaccurate. Current devices use rapidly flashing infrared light in order to measure blood flow changes which indicate heartbeat. This technology can be inaccurate because tendons, muscles, and bone may interfere with the reading.


The Google medical wristband relies on different technology; the device measure electrical pulses of the heart which the Google X lab hopes to prove more accurate.


GOOGLE X IS CHURNING OUT INNOVATION


The laboratory that is working on the Google medical wristband, Google X , is responsible for a number of recent innovations. This is the same team that unveiled Google Glass, the driverless car, airborne wind power, and drone delivery. The team is also working on a medical device similar to contact lenses that can measure glucose levels.

Imagine for a moment glancing at the world around you, and seeing virtual images projected onto what already exists in front of your eyes. Imagine a completely interactive virtual world interspersed over your day to day life. This is a notion that belongs to the future, but the future is right now. The augmented reality platform known as “Magic Leap” announced Tuesday that they will be assembling a development kit, so that developers interested in pushing the development of their product can do so before it hits the market for consumers.


 


The magic behind the scenes of Magic Leap


Augmented reality is not a relatively new concept, nor is it a widely accepted one. Google Glass is an example of an augmented reality platform that never got to market before consumers became weary of being saturated with its premise. Essentially the user places the device (a pair of glasses) over their eyes, and the world around them becomes “augmented” with digital displays and overlaid graphics. This differs from Virtual reality such as the Oculus Rift platform which is completely immersive. Users can play games, view graphics, and interact with a separate virtual world around them without ever sequestering themselves from the real world. Magic Leap explains the idea behind Magic Leap and how it functions, “With our founding principles our team dug deep into the physics of the visual world, and dug deep into the physics and processes of our visual and sensory perception. We created something new. We call it a Dynamic Digitized Lightfield Signal™ (you can call it a Digital Lightfield™). It is biomimetic, meaning it respects how we function naturally as humans (we are humans after all, not machines). Magic Leap wants to move away from the rift created between human and the outside world due to technology, and hopes to enhance the experience of the world which already exists around us every day.


 


Why release something that isn’t ready for consumers?


In order to ensure that this augmented reality platform is the best possible product for consumers before it goes to market, the company has decided it would be best to release it through what is known as a development kit. This way there are already developers working with the product and creating usable mediums with which consumers will interact, and build the best possible community ahead of any potential release date. It’s not uncommon for a company like this to release a development kit ahead of the release date. Virtual Reality platform Oculus Rift released a similar development kit ahead of their release to market. Although the product will now be in the hands of developers, Magic Leap has nothing to worry about financially. They have already received more than 540 million dollars in funding from companies like Google, Kleiner Perkins, Qualcomm, and Andreessen Horowitz. The Magic Leap is large step forward in the way that we compute the company states, “It’s an idea based in the belief that people should not have to choose between technology or safety, technology or privacy, the virtual world or the real world.


Magic Leap wants to bring the elements of humanity into computing, and save us from the rift technology is creating in everyday life, but the first in doing so is putting the tools in the hands of developers who will determine just how far it will go.
