New photos have emerged for the new and improved Google Glass. Functionality is going to remain very similar, however, the design of will be a little different. As of right now, this new version is strictly intended for Google’s Glass at Work partners. Hopefully, Google eventually decides to release this device to the public.

THE ORIGINAL GOOGLE GLASS

As mentioned previously, the functionality for the new Google Glass is going to be much like the original. They are worn just like a pair of eyeglasses, but they do much more than allow you to see. Google Glass can almost be thought of as a hands-free smartphone. They have a few noteworthy features, as well. First, they have a touchpad located on the side of them that allows users to control the device. Using this touchpad allows users to view information such as phone calls, updates, weather, etc. Google Glass also has a built-in camera that records 720p HD video.

THE NEW GOOGLE GLASS

The major changes in this new device are in the design. One aspect that the new design will have is a pair of hinges. These hinges are going to allow users to fold up the glasses, just like a pair of regular eyeglasses. Not only this, but Google is also adding an indicator light to the glasses. From now on, whenever Google Glass is recording something there will be a green indicator light emanating. Also, the only major aspect that Google added to their glasses outside of the design is an external battery pack.

WHO WILL HAVE ACCESS TO THE NEW GOOGLE GLASS?

If you are excited about the new Google Glass, then you might be a little disappointed. This new device, as of right now, is only going to be available to Glass at Work partners. Some of the most notable participants of this Glass at Work program include the Advanced Medical Applications company. The AMA develops Glass-compatible software for various medical workers around the world. Basically, unless you are a Glass at Work partner, you will not be able to enjoy this new device.

WILL GOOGLE MAKE THIS PUBLIC?

Unfortunately, there is no word yet from Google on whether or not this will be available to the public. As a matter of fact, around this time last year Google actually stopped producing them. Only time will tell if Google decides to release this new version to the public.

Google, Huawei and Best Buy May Join Hands Again

Google may be bringing the gold Nexus 6P after Huawei’s announcements made at CES 2016, planning to introduce a few more products on January 5th, 2016. The gold Google Nexus 6P might be among them, with a release date in America and a possible launch of the Huawei Honor 5X. Currently, the Nexus 5X is available through Best Buy, and it’s likely that Google will take advantage of Best Buy’s openness to exclusive variants and colors of products to introduce the gold Nexus 6P.

Will the Upcoming iPhone 7 Be Waterproof?

Also, in the speculative side of the electronics industry is a strong belief that the upcoming line of iPhones will be waterproof. Many websites have suggested that the iPhone 7 will be made of a new kind of rubbery material, called self-healing elastomer, that can bend and return to its original shape. This has been confirmed to be one of Apple’s patents.

This would increase the device’s durability considerably, but it might take away from Apple’s customary classy design. Apple has also bought a patent for a waterproof logic board, which has been incorporated onto the iPhone 6 line, which can handle water but are not water-resistant.

Meanwhile, Lenovo Joins the Race With an Android OS

Lenovo smartphones might be upgraded to work with Android 6.0 OS, according to a leaked roadmap. The first device to receive the upgrade will be the international Lenovo K3 Note in March of 2016, as well as the Chinese versions of the Lenovo Vibe X3 and Lenovo Vibe P1.

All Rumors Should Be Taken With a Grain of Salt

Most of this speculation is likely ungrounded. However, a lot of it are almost expected moves. Google will greatly benefit from a gold Nexus 6P in the American market since the color has become popular after the iPhone 5 series made it available. The iPhone 7 would have some kind of waterproof feature in order to compete with other devices though it won’t likely have a waterproof casing. Leaksters are assuming that it might be something that’s attached to the phone, and it could possibly be sold separately. Finally, Lenovo can be updating their lineup merely for the sake of getting with the program, since phones are becoming more and more competitive when it comes to their OS.

There have been a lot of new technologies built around the third-dimension (3D), but no one has really stopped to think about developing a 3D cursor that can allow us to expand our set of tools to use within a virtual space. Sure, with a VR headset, users are able to utilize their hands to perform functions, but what if you’re working in a 3D environment that still exists within a computer monitor? A research team at the University of Montreal in Canada has developed software that will allow a user’s smartphone or tablet to become a revolutionary way to interact with a computer.

THE PROBLEM

Although the 3D cursor has not been named, it was revealed at the SIGGRAPH 2015 Conference, held from Aug. 9 to 13 in Los Angeles. The team spoke with NowItsLive about what it was hoping to accomplish with the device.

According to the team lead, Tomas Dorta, professor at the University of Montreal’s School of Design, current mouse cursors are trapped within the confines of a screen.

“It’s the kind of interaction that has to evolve,” Dorta said in an interview with NowItsLive.

A 3D SOLUTION

Most people are well versed in how well a traditional mouse cursor can navigate 2D planes, but what if you’re a designer that’s trying to work inside a 3D space within a 2D display? Right now, there aren’t a lot of cost effective options for most people, especially if you aren’t a designer or architect by trade.

The 3D cursor uses the screen of a smartphone or tablet to become the new trackpad for the 3D cursor software. The “new” trackpad produces a plane on the screen that users can then interact with within a 3D space.

“I have this cup. When it’s selected, it’s like I have it in my hand,” said Dorta.

USING THE 3D CURSOR

The development team from University of Montreal made the 3D cursor really familiar for users to interact with. The new trackpad almost feels like you’re using it like a camera. Users can pinch to zoom in or expand their fingers to zoom out, and they can rotate the view by rotating the trackpad.

According to NowItsLive, the 3D cursor only works with Hyve3D technology, a design system that allows users to interact with a 3D representation of a sketch.

The 3D cursor software also allows teams to work together collaboratively on the same project. Members on a team can view the same space from various angles using their trackpad devices, and can all manipulate the project individually from each other.

“You can navigate together … working together in the same computer,” said Dorta. “Everything 3D, everything collaborative, because the 3D cursor becomes our avatar.”

A new study about mobile phone etiquette by the Pew Research Center found that more than a third of millennials use their cell phones “for no particular reason” other than to have “something to do”.

As Pew notes, the new issues of etiquette introduced by the relatively new phenomenon of widepsread mobile phone use have been met with different responses by different generations. The generation gap with mobile etiquette, however, is not as wide as one might assume.

For example, in adults’ response to questions of situational appropriateness for mobile phones, 96 percent agreed that phones were not okay to use in religious settings and 95 percent in cinemas or “other places where others are usually quiet.”

As The Washington Post commented, it is often said that millennials are “horrible, antisocial subhumans who can’t be bothered to tear themselves away from their screens.” Older generations, however, aren’t much different from their millennial counterparts: the study found that 13 percent of them do the same thing with their phone to avoid interacting with others. 23 percent of cellphone owners reported using their phone in in public for this antisocial purpose frequently or occasionally, which accounts for 6 percent of all public cell phone use.

Perhaps the most striking statistic from the study was that 89 percent of all mobile phone users said they used their device at they last social event they attended.

Though this behavior may sound asocial and withdrawn, Pew found that most of the people using their mobile phones at social functions used them for a purpose related to the social function. A 45 percent plurality reported that they used their phones to share a video or photo that they had taken of the event; 41 percent said that they used their device to share “something that had occurred in the group” via a social media site, text or email and slightly smaller groups polled reported similar social activity with their phones.

Perhaps predictably, Pew found that overall, millennials approved of cellphone use in more situations and places than older generations. They are also more likely to use them in social settings and tolerate their use.

Life before smartphones and social media took over the world (wide web) went on just fine less than ten years ago. In the days of my childhood in the nineties, there was no Facebook messenger to socialise on, nor was there Tinder to efficiently swipe right and meet the man or woman (in some very rare occasions) of your dreams. Before smartphones, all mobiles with a color screen were considered smart, and as for filtering the life out of a photograph you took on Instagram to represent your day – who knew photographic filters on a mobile phone would even exist? Let’s take a trip down memory lane to reminisce about what life was like before the internet and all it’s social media offspring swept us all off our feet and into a stationary, techno-dependent existence.

Who else used to run home from school and wait for 30 minutes for the computer to load and for the internet connection to last before someone made a phone call and stopped your creative MSN Messenger emoji name in mid track? While many of my friends had heard hitting, emotional song lyrics as their display name (to prove to their friends just how hard it was being a teenager), mine was “rEmeMber me, I am gOing to Be fAmous” (flower emoji, heart emoji). So very modest I have to say. Thankfully for my generation, it is impossible to retrieve old MSN conversations and hilariously embarrassing names. Phew.

At the back of your favourite magazines, you could ring up a sketchy sounding company on the telephone from your home and order a ringtone that made your phone sound like the winning contender from X Factor. At over $6 a time, they weren’t cheap to buy. However, I had Black Eyed Peas waiting to play when I got a call. Unfortunately, I only ever got texts. I did phone myself once though and it did sound worthy of the $6. Phew.

Camera Phones

Now, I know that camera phones are a basic essential today, but it wasn’t until I was 16 that I got my first pixilated photo taken from my mobile. I couldn’t believe it. I remember thinking, “Oh I wonder what will come next” – maybe you will be able to watch television on your mobile. Today, with the help of wifi – you can indeed do that too. Camera phones used to require a lead to plug into you computer in order to print them out or change your MSN display photo. There was no filtering, apart from maybe changing it to black and white on Paint. Can you believe we couldn’t even email them to each other

Who else wonders what life will be like in the next ten years? Today’s generation don’t even know what it was like without wifi, let alone the Internet. With all the new apps and social media sites at our hands, anything seems possible. Everything, except for going back to life before smartphones, that is. That seems a very strange, slow world. How did we survive it?

Google’s advanced research arm that is Advanced Technology and Projects (Atap) division demonstrated its latest find at the I/O developer conference in San Francisco. In past, Atap, Google’s division has showcased high level projects such as Project Tango and Project Ara. This year Atap came up with Project Jacquard. This is all about controlling you devices like TV, smartphone, computers or tablets just by rubbing your thighs. Google is on its toes to do it. Apart from smart jeans, Google is offering something more. Just read this piece and know more.

The smart fabric is going to be laced with conductive wire which works like that of a touchscreen layer that can detect the changes in conductance just when it is touched. The woven textile tracks and monitors the touch and it shall work like a laptop trackpad used to control any kind of functions.
