Pinterest vs Snapchat: Who Is More Diverse? - http://clapway.com/2016/01/11/snapchat-vs-pinterest-who-is-more-diverse-123/

Pinterest is doing their best to go diverse and get out of their white CIS male comfort zone, while Snapchat is avoiding the question of diversity entirely. Today, diversity and equality are among the most relevant social issues, and it is only fair that it also applies to the people who run social media.

Diversity in Snapchat and Pinterest

The team behind Snapchat have never given any specifics as to their staff body. The company had 30 in staff a few years ago, and the number has spread to over 300 since. Snapchat is one of the fastest growing platforms on the internet, but they’re quite secretive.

Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel has spoken mildly of diversity, declaring that he doesn’t count in numbers but in awareness. He has claimed diversity among the team, but hasn’t specified in numbers. The transparency could be interpreted as lying, but Snapchat is the kind of platform that needs to remain transparent.

In short words, all Snapchat does is provide with a way for people to communicate. The people who run the platform only need to worry about user safety and censorship where it is due. So far, Snapchat hasn’t received criticism for lack of diversity. In fact, its Discover tab displays snaps from all over the world. Regardless of what corners we see, Snapchat does work of putting the world in front of user’s eyes. Now, whether or not these stories are filtered is an entirely different story.

The truth is Snapchat hasn’t answered any questions about diversity in detail. It’s likely that they won’t, at least until the company grows a little bigger. Maybe then they will be more comfortable disclosing that information or the internet will come for their heads.

Pinterest Owns Diversity in 2016

Pinterest has just gotten their first head of diversity. This position will be in charge of giving the Pinterest staff body a way to get out of the white and male employee body. The new head of diversity is Candice Morgan, a black woman.

The announcement received positive response, unlike Twitter. The latter announced a white man as head of diversity, and they received serious negative backlash for it. Morgan’s plan is to hire women to make part of at least 30% of incoming engineers. She will also work on getting at least 18% of the engineering body from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds and implement a ‘Rooney Rule’. This means that at least one minority candidate and one female candidate will be interviewed for all leadership positions.

Pinterest is also auditing pay to make sure that there is fair payment for men and women. Now there’s some diversity done right. The firm will likely be getting a lot more support from its user base, who are women spread across all walks of life and races.

Apple Increases Workforce Diversity but Still Has Room for Improvement - http://clapway.com/2015/08/14/apple-increases-workforce-diversity-but-still-has-room-for-improvement123/

A recent report from Apple suggests the company is making strong progress towards expanding diversity in its workforce.

Apple Hired 65 Percent More Women in 2015

Apple’s annual Diversity Report shows some impressive numbers when looking at pure percentages. Over the past twelve months, Apple has hired 65 percent more women, 50 percent more blacks, and 66 percent more Latinos.

“This represents the largest group of employees we’ve ever hired from underrepresented groups in a single year,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook in a corresponding letter.

Taking a look at pure numbers, that equates to 11,000 women, 2,200 blacks, and 2,700 Hispanics – still impressive numbers. However, Apple employs over 110,000 people, which means the company still has a large amount of ground to cover if it wants to continue strengthening the diversity of its workforce.

Apple’s Workforce is Still Predominantly Made Up of White Males

After taking a look at the landscape of Apple’s entire workforce, the picture doesn’t change much. White males still dominate the workforce, and things begin to look more bleak going up the ladder.

According to the same Diversity Report, 79 percent of white males are either engineers or programmers, and white males make up 54 percent of the total workforce (down from 55 percent in 2014). When it comes to Asian men, 78 percent are engineers or programmers, but only make up 18 percent of the workforce (up from 14 percent in 2014).

Apple Admits There is Still Much to be Done

Progress is progress, and Apple openly admits that they’re not done yet.

“We are proud of the progress we’ve made, and our commitment to diversity is unwavering. But we know there is a lot more work to do,” said Cook.

Expanding workforce diversity isn’t just an Apple problem. Many other major tech companies are making progress in expanding their workforce as well. In the past six months, 43 percent of Intel’s new hires have been women, and Google reported that 21 percent of its new hires have been women. By comparison, Apple is making great progress in expanding the culture in its workforce.

Pinterest is Testing New Ways to Increase Diversity - http://clapway.com/2015/08/01/pinterest-is-testing-new-ways-to-increase-diversity123/

Pinterest announced on Wednesday that it will begin transforming its working environment to become more diverse in terms of gender and race. They plan to begin this by hiring more women and professionals of different cultural and racial backgrounds. Pinterest has been valued at around $11 billion.

PINTEREST PIONEERED PUBLIC DIVERSITY INFORMATION IN TECHNOLOGY

They believe that by making this information public, that it will encourage professionals of different backgrounds that will eventually assist the company in fulfilling its pledge. Pinterest has also released company diversity statistics that women are making up a positive 42 percent, and employees are still predominantly white, at around 49 percent, and Asian, at 43 percent. Pinterest has assured that they are taking a step beyond the other companies that claim that they want more diversity in technology. Although, the overall diversity statistics have been consistently low within the past few years, many civil rights activists are pressing for Silicon Valley to increase diversity.

PINTEREST HAS VOICED CONCERS OF DIVERSITY IN THE PAST

This isn’t the first time that Pinterest has voiced major concern about diversity in the office. In 2013, an engineer for Pinterest called on other technology companies to release their diversity statistics in a Medium post. The engineer’s efforts pre-date the conventional reports that some of the big firms have started releasing since the publishing. In 2014, Apple, Facebook, and Google all released diversity reports about the internal set up of their work forces. A second report came out and the numbers showed that white males are still in the majority.

PINTEREST REQUIRES EMPLOYEES TO PARTICIPATE IN CULTURE AND DIVERSITY TRAINING

Pinterest also requires its current employees to participate in training that is hoped to increase and improve the diversity numbers and avoid culture bred differences. Under 4 percent of Pinterest’s engineering team has an ethnic background that is not exclusively Asian or white. They are aiming to have around 8 percent of engineers and 12 percent of non-engineers to come from underrepresented ethnic backgrounds, including Hispanic and African-Americans. According to Pinterest, “If you don’t reassure it, you don’t mean it.”

These are definitely things worthy of rejoice thanks to June 26th historical decision! - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/3-benefits-of-making-same-sex-marriage-just-marriage/

It’s official! On Friday, June 26, same-sex marriage became just marriage. It was legalized in all 50 states and we all became witnesses to this moment in history. This is something we will be able to tell our grandchildren one day: “I was standing right outside the Supreme Court when they announced that me and your grandfather could get married anywhere in the country.” Although it was a 5–4 decision and I would have preferred it be unanimous, progress is progress. Majority rules! I love democracy. There are a number of benefits of making same-sex marriage just marriage and here are three you should now:

1. Better Weddings

It is no secret that gays are more stylish, fashion forward, and more creative than the rest of the population. Don’t deny it, it’s true. Accept it and move on. Our innate creativity allows us to throw the best parties and events. And if you’re invited to a gay wedding, definitely get ready for the time of your life.

2. More Adoptions, Happier Kids

Adoptions are easier for couples that are married. Hopefully, more same-sex couples will start to adopt more children in need. When these children are adopted, they will be the happiest children on the planet. Same-sex couples understand diversity and practice acceptance, allowing children to be true to themselves. Adopted children of same-sex couples will also never have to want for anything. Gay couples plan for children. They make sure that their finances are intake and that they have enough time to take on the responsibility. Unlike parents who have children because they forget to take the pill, gay parents prepare their lives for a new member of the family.

3. Focus On a New Cause

Now that we have conquered same-sex marriage, it is time to move on to a new cause. There are so many problems and issues out in the world that need our attention. Let’s all put our focus on to making history and bringing big changes to our world in a new way.

Although, I only listed three benefits of making same-sex marriage legal, there are plenty more out there. I’m sure if you pay close attention you will start to see our society developing a better well-being. Not to mention that this will boost our economy with the increase in the amount of weddings and honeymoons. Same-sex marriage is now just marriage. No matter your sexual orientation, remember that Friday, June 26, was a win.
