Doctor Sergio Canavero is raising funds to conduct the first ever human head transplant, and it could be funded by Mark Zuckerberg. The Italian neurosurgeon has already conferenced with doctors in Russia who are willing to carry out the surgery.
Doctor Makes Video For Support Towards the World’s First Head Transplant
The patient and recipient of this procedure is Valeri Spiridonov, a 31-year-old Russian computer scientists. He was born with Wedin-Hoffmann disease, a rare degenerative illness. He wants to become the first person to have a human head transplant, which would be carried out by Dr Canavero. Canavero has declared that he has a 90% chance of success. If the surgery is actually successful, he could make medical history.
This surgery could cost about $12 million, so Canavero is calling for the world’s billionaires, like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, to help fund the surgery.

As one of the founders of the Breakthrough Prize foundation in Sciences, Mark Zuckerberg awarded a group of young scientists the New Horizons Prize in Mathematics. This was due to their hard work and dedication in discoveries about the universe, life, and the mind, named after the most far reaching probe in history, the New Horizons Space Probe.
One of the prizes, the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Mathematics, is a $3 million grant, and it was presented to Ian Agol from the University of California at Berkeley and Institute for Advanced Study on November 8. The meaning of this award is to recognize young people that open up new ways of understanding humanity in the life sciences.
The board, of which Priscilla Chan is also a member, awarded five New Horizons prizes in addition. These are $100,000 grants that recognizes young scientists, physicists and mathematicians. The recipients for the New Horizons Prize in Physics were B. Andrei Bernevig, Liang Fu, Xiao-Liant Qi, Raphael Flauger, Leonardo Senatore and Yuji Tachikawa. The awardees for the New Horizons Prize in Mathematics were Larry Guth and André Arroja Neves.
Members of the Breakthrough Prize board expressed their excitement and the importance of every scientific achievement, as it is our duty as a community to support it.
The ceremony was produced and directed by Don Mischer Productions and broadcast live on National Geogrphic Channel, and it will air once more on FOX on November 29.
So imagine you’re re-watching The Social Network, trying to jump on the bandwagon and like Zuckerberg’s snobby, reactionary computer-elitist-sellout-hacker-stand-in. Suddenly, you realize that the only reason you have for really detracting your fandom from the guy, i.e., that he became one of the biggest corporate entities, commodifying every facet of subjective and social experience for the profit of any high-bidding corporation, that maybe somewhere about thirty minutes into the movie, he should have just decided to stick with hacking. How far would he have gone?
Perhaps as far as seventeen-year-old Julius Kivimaki, who was recently found guilty of 50,700 “instances of aggravated computer break-ins.” Now we’re talking. Official court documents state that Kivimaki’s hacker attacks affected Harvard University, MIT, and many others. The attacks involved hijacking emails, jamming up traffic to websites, and the pilfering of credit card information.
JUSTICE TO BE SERVED for the teenage hacker
Most awesomely for himself, the teenage hacker Kivimaki is not in jail. Yes. Instead of prison or any comparable hard time done, this young one isn’t worth the effort, says the District Court of Espoo, who sentenced the boy–whose online moniker is Zeekill–to a two-year suspended prison sentence.
The District Court of Espoo also confiscated his PC, and court ordered him to give back €6,588 ($7,282) worth of property he’d taken throughout his crime run from the law. A Judge Wilhelm Norrmann mentioned in the proceedings that Kivimaki was actually only 15 and 16 years old when he committed the crimes, back in 2012 and 2013.
“[The verdict] took into account the young age of the defendant at the time, his capacity to understand the harmfulness of the crimes, and the fact that he had been imprisoned for about a month during the pre-trial investigation,” said a statement from the court. Ignorance, it seems, is legal bliss.
SOME DESIRE MORE PUNISHMENT
However there’s one consultant of Europol on cybercrime who was very concerned about the [lack of] sentence. “Whilst [really?] I’m sure the courts concerned all the circumstances surrounding the conviction and the sentence that was warranted, there is a question as to whether such sentences will act as a deterrent to other hackers…It is not necessarily the place of the courts to factor in deterrence in their sentences…[h]owever, if I were another hacking group, was not that bothered about just having something on my record, and saw someone attract a suspended sentence for over 50,000 hacks, some of which caused significant damage, I don’t think it would cause me much concern.” His name (the consultant’s) is Alan Woodward.
WHAT PRECISELY KIVIMAKI DID
He infiltrated more than 50,000 computer servers by exploiting their vulnerabilities in a specific software program each operating system used, called “ColdFusion.” Insodoing, Kivimaki was able to install “backdoors” into tens of thousands of computers, and this allowed him open-access to their information, in de rigueur of old-school hackers.
YES, BUT ANY REAL DAMAGE?
The prosecutors originally accused the teenage hacker of adding malware to roughly 1,400 servers. They went on to say that he used this proliferation to create a botnet, which he in turn to begin denial of service (DoS) attacks on other systems–a system action which bombards affected computers with internet traffic, swamping them until the term “lagging” doesn’t even begin to limn the state of the screen, one would notice on the receiving end of such an attack.
Kivimaki’s PC’s chat logs reveal that he used the botnet to attack the news site ZDNet and the chat tool Canternet. He was also aiding in the theft of seven gigabytes’ worth of data, which were sent to and from email addresses ending in @mit.edu, i.e. the Massachusetts Institute of Technologies’ system. He used stolen credit card info to make online purchases and shared the info with others, and he was also charged with laundering Bitcoin, which he purportedly used to fund a journey to Mexico…the list goes on. One supposes when it comes to being a digital outlaw, there really are no checkpoints to let you know the order of legally screwed you’re becoming with each passing month and every casual black market deal.

Founder and CEO of Facebook wants brain-to-brain thoughts directly transmitted
In a recent Q and A conference with Facebook users, CEO Mark Zuckerberg expressed his vision of the future – one in which people will be able to think something and instantly, directly, have the thought sent to another user of the same platform. The transmission of thoughts through telepathic communication would be achievable over regular Internet satellites like the ones we have today, but problems still have to be resolved before such futuristic and controversial technology can be marketed.

Fear not, folks. Such technology, which is sure to baffle a number of people, cause scary privacy concerns to users (imagine having your thoughts hacked into), and make luddites’ heads explode worldwide, is years and years away for a number of reasons. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tinder, and almost any other imaginable form of non-telepathic social networking available today will have to sate your appetite for social media for a while.
So, what’s preventing telepathic communication from being viable today?
Foremost, we would require a device that would somehow plug in to a person’s brain and be able to both send and receive electrical signals. Basically, neurons communicate using neurotransmitters, which are a form of chemical signal. Whenever neurons receive these chemical signals, they give off little jolts of electric energy. Believe it or not, millions and millions of these neurotransmitters are needed for even our more basic actions, which results in millions and millions of bursts of electricity being sent and received by neurons. Capturing these electric bursts is currently impossible, since we simply don’t have the hardware to do it. Then there’s the question of how to plug in to someone’s brain; do you use a brain implant? Is surgery needed? Well, there’s a few devices being worked on today that would make that unnecessary.
What kind of mind-reading gear is being developed as we speak?
Currently, researchers are working on telepathic communication using the revolutionary principle of TMS, short for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. By generating a magnetic field over a person’s brain, neural pathways within can be activated, allowing users from India to “beam” thoughts to others in France in a recent test. However, the system is very rudimentary, and only really let the users send simple words like “hola” and “ciao” to those on the receiving end. In order to help treat post-traumatic stress disorder in soldiers, an engineering student from the University of Pittsburgh has used an Oculus virtual reality headset to simulate environments. The researcher, Jennifer Patterson, hopes that therapists and doctors will learn more about how virtual reality can help people recover from PTSD.
How can virtual reality systems be used to treat PTSD?
Patterson’s research involves using software that creates virtual environments. For example, if a soldier is afraid of certain settings like a road in the desert or a city with Middle Eastern architecture, the headset can simulate those places. Hopefully, after some virtual time in synthetic environments, the soldier will stop avoiding similar ones in real life.
What other medical uses have been found for virtual reality headsets?
This is not the first use of virtual reality in medical treatment. In the past, researchers have used the Oculus headset in treatments and studies ranging from the treatment of glaucoma to easing pain in burn victims. One of the main advantages to the Oculus system is its affordability. Unlike medical headsets and simulators ranging from $30,000 to $300,000 in price, the Oculus headset is available for developers from $350 to $400. The medical headsets are still needed in certain studies due to their ability to accurately detect sensitive movements and be mounted on other places than a patient’s head. Yet, the Oculus Rift and other cheaper virtual reality headsets are still quickly taking the place of the more expensive medical units.
What does the future hold for virtual reality headsets?
Facebook has purchased Oculus for $2 billion last year in anticipation of the rise of virtual reality. Mark Zuckerberg thinks virtual reality is the next major computing platform, and he’s taking steps to ensure that. His company plans to make the headsets available in 2016, but developers have had access to prototypes since 2013 in order to stimulate app creation. In fact over, 100,000 headsets have already been distributed to developers. Other tech companies, such as Sony, Samsung Electronics, Microsoft, Google, and HTC are seeking to get in on the market. Some, like Sony’s system, will be solely for video games. Others, like the Oculus Rift, allow scientists and developers to make their own software. Future studies will pit headsets from different companies against each other and see how well they can aid research and recovery.
