BLACKBERRY LEAKS ON BLACKBERY LEAKS

Plans for the phone were announced in March, and Blackberry promised a release sometime this year. But since then, the company has kept incredibly quiet on details. The press surrounding the Blackberry Venice has all happened in sneaky leaks like this one, with the company neglecting to respond officially for comment at all.

ANDROID OS CONFIRMED

The photos confirm that the Venice will debut as a sliding smartphone with a physical QWERTY keyboard and will, as expected, run an Android operating system. The images also show the phone with an 18-megapixel rear camera, a dual LED flash, and SIM and microSD ports on the top of the body (instead of on the side). Also rumored is a 5MP front-facing camera.

Internal specs have been leaked, too, although they aren’t visibly evident in the photos. Consumers have been told to expect a 5.4 inch 2560×1440 pixel touchscreen display, optical image stabilization for the camera, a Snapdragon 808 processor, and 3GB of RAM.

A RETURN TO PRACTICALITY?

Loyal Blackberry users and fans of the physical QWERTY keyboard are especially excited about the marriage between Blackberry hardware and Android software. The Blackberry Venice release and the mysteriousness surrounding it are promising as a means of returning the once-dominant tech company to some semblance of relevance, after having Apple and Google decimate its market share down to below 1%. If the leaks and silence are a calculated marketing strategy by the business, they might prove a successful one.

The tech community is still waiting for official statements of confirmation from the company for the Blackberry Venice. Until then, its specs and rumored November release still classify as rumors.

But a picture is worth a thousand words, and the internet now has at least ten of them. This is looking like the real deal. The question is, can the Blackberry Venice really compete in an Android/iPhone market? It might be nice to see some more competition among smartphone producers, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

Nintendo doesn’t understand gamers. Nintendo has archaic online policies. Nintendo is dying.

These are all sentiments that frequently fly around gaming forums any time the 125-year-old gaming company is brought up. No, that’s no typo. Nintendo was founded in 1889, and many people forget how innovative the company has been, even in recent years.

Admittedly, the Wii U has been a bit of the flop, but the company seems to be hard at work on their next console, codenamed NX, and recent US patent was filed that indicates the company may be completely nixing an optical disc drive.

Forum members on NeoGAF stumbled across a US patent filing application (20150231511) that was filed by Nintendo Co., LTD.

A lot of the information inside the application is pretty boring to read through. It describes what most people would believe to be a typical console. But the first first point of the article gives away one of the most interesting pieces of information in the entire document:

“A stationary game apparatus, comprising: an internal hard disk drive storing a program and/or data; a communication unit transmitting/receiving a program and/or data via a network; and a processor executing a program stored in the hard disk drive to perform game processing, wherein the game apparatus is not provided with an optical disk drive.”

The “stationary game apparatus” could mean a lot of different things. Maybe stationary means the user won’t be carrying it around with them like a handheld. However, the last sentence states that the console will be missing an optical disk drive, which means one of two things: either Nintendo is going back to cartridges, or they’re moving to a completely online format.

Another interesting find shows that the controller will include a display unit, which sounds like the gamepad for the Wii U.

NOT HAVING A DISK DRIVE ISN’T A NEW IDEA

NeoGAF commentators made a few interesting points: this patent doesn’t have the NX named in it, the patent isn’t reflective of a final product, and this isn’t the first time a console manufacturer has considered ditching the optical drive.

Fans were vehemently against Microsoft’s initial decision to omit a disk drive in the Xbox One. Not everyone has access to the internet, not everyone has a blazingly fast connection, and plenty of people have data caps. Console manufacturers also have a nasty habit of limiting hardware storage to officially branded hard drives, and charging obscene premiums for these products, so all of this makes sense.

Fan reception about Nintendo’s patent has remained neutral so far.

MORE ABOUT NINTENDO NX

Nintendo’s plans to keep a display-based controller is odd since third party developers rarely made use of it, and support seemed forced at times, even in some of Nintendo’s first party games. This may be a move to maintain backwards compatibility, it may be a brand new controller, or it may be a sign that Nintendo will finally combine handheld with console.

All of this is pure speculation, however. Nintendo said they won’t be willing to talk about the NX until sometime in 2016. Regardless, things are beginning to get interesting with the NX. Nintendo was the first to introduce motion controls, maybe they’ll be the first to lead us into a completely digital world.

Parallels, a company well known for its cross-platform solutions, has a surprise for Mac users: they’ve managed to bring over Windows 10’s virtual assistant software, Cortana, to their Parallels Desktop 11 users.

Cortana Gets More… Virtual

Parallels has been in the business of bringing OS-virtualization software for many years now, and they’ve grown to be quite good at it. Version 11 of their newest software is bringing a host of new features to the platform, but Cortana might be the most noteworthy, if not the most novel one.

Now, anyone familiar with Parallels, or their products, knows there is one caveat to this: Parallels Desktop is a virtual machine. That means that you won’t be installing the Cortana software directly onto your Mac computer in the same way you might install Photoshop. Instead, the software creates a virtual instance of a licensed version of Windows 10 in a blended sort of way.

This means that you are essentially running Windows 10 inside a window on your Mac. It’s a confusing concept to understand when you’re not experiencing the software yourself.

When Worlds Collide

Parallels is most notably known for the way they’ve been able to seamlessly blend virtual machines into Mac OS, and they’ve done some cool stuff with Cortana, too. For instance, Cortana will pop up from the OS X dock if you say “Hey, Cortana,” similar to how it works on Windows 10. It can also launch Mac apps in addition to its normal functions like checking the weather, searching the internet, and the usual.

Cortana aside, Mac users can also use features from OS X on Windows apps. For instance, Macs that sport Force-Touch touchpads can use them to look up word definitions in Microsoft Word.

You will need a Windows 10 license though, and if you don’t already have Parallels Desktop then the standalone will set you back $79.99. Current users will have to pay a $49.99 upgrade fee. There is also a Pro edition, which features developer tools and cloud storage for $49.99 a year.

It Doesn’t Get More Literal than the WalkCar

The name implies almost everything you need to really know about the purpose of the WalkCar. The device has a very portable design — it’s about as large as a typical laptop — which allows it to be carried with the user just about anywhere. Just throw it in your bag and you’re well on your way. “I thought, ‘what if we could just carry our transportation in our bags, wouldn’t that mean we’d always have our transportation with us to ride on?” said WalkCar creator Kuniako Saito in a recent report from Reuters.

The WalkCar is More Than Capable

The $800 mobile device is surprising in more ways than one. The WalkCar is composed of aluminum and only weighs somewhere in the neighborhood of four to six pounds. Even with its lightweight body, the device can still support a person weighing up to 265 pounds. Riding on the WalkCar is interesting, and it’s best thought of like a skateboard. The device activates and goes when the rider stands on it. To guide the board the user just shifts their weight, similar to a skateboard. The max speed of the WalkCar is around 6.2 miles, which is just about on par with a brisk walking speed. To make the device stop, the user just needs to step off the vehicle. So far the device seems to work largely as expected. The biggest complaint users have had so far has revolved around how loud the motor can be while riding around.

So When Can We Get One?

The good news is that people interested in the project will be able to reserve one sometime this fall when Saito says the Kickstarter page will go live. As stated previously, fans will be able to pick one up for right around $800. The current launch date is set in Spring of 2016. So what do you guys think? He is known as “PewDiePie” on the video-sharing website and regularly posts videos of him commenting to video games he plays.

In an interview he described his activity as “commenting unpopular and bad video games and turning it into comedy.”

He is also in a relationship with Italian YouTube personality Marzia Bisognin, better known online as “CutiePieMarzia”.
