Microsoft has decided to let China Electronics provide product and technical support for their operating system. This will include licensing the operating system to specifications of national agencies. Also, the Corporate VP of Windows, Yusuf Mehdi, commented in a blog post about what else China Electronics will do. Mehdi stated that they would serve state-owned enterprises in key framework fields. He noted that energy, transportation, and telecommunication would be some of the fields involved.

There are three main components to the ecosystem: the operating system, the Windows Store and the devices owned by each user.

The Windows Store is where users can find and install the apps they need for entertainment, information and productivity. The following five apps are highly recommended for Windows 10 users who wish to get the most out of their devices by staying productive.

Microsoft Office Apps

For many decades, Microsoft Office has helped millions of computer users manage and create documents, information and solutions for a variety of purposes. In the new Windows Store, the Microsoft Office apps come in two main categories: desktop and mobile.

Complex projects will generally require the use of desktop apps, which can be found in the Office 2013 and Office 2016 suites. Essentially, the desktop apps are more advanced than their mobile versions, and they are meant to be used in desktop and laptop systems. The mobile apps are optimized for the touch screens of smartphones and tablets.

Some Office apps are bundled with Windows 10; these include Calendar, Mail and OneNote. Users can install Excel, PowerPoint and the always versatile Word from the Windows Store; with these apps, users are able to read and edit Office documents to a certain extent. Security and dependability are the two major benefits of Dropbox; users do not have to worry about losing their files if their smartphone or computer is lost, stolen or suddenly stops working. The basic version of this app grants users 2GB of cloud storage.

Evernote

This app is a favorite of business users, journalists and researchers. Essentially, Evernote is a smart notepad and scrapbook that can collect just about any type of digital media. Notes can be handwritten, typed, scanned, copied from the Web, capture with a camera, and even recorded with a microphone. Users can easily organize their notes, share them with others and synchronize them across devices. Evernote comes in free and paid versions, and it is one of the most widely recommended apps in the Windows Store.

Pocket

With Pocket, formerly known as Read It Later, users can create and manage reading lists from various Web sources. Essentially, users can save articles into cloud folders that they can access later. Among the many features of Pocket, sharing and synchronization are the most powerful. Pocket formats articles for optimum reading in any platform by removing clutter such as JavaScript, frames, pop-up windows, etc.; it also allows users to adjust display settings such as text size, font style and background for an ideal reading experience. Pocket is available in free and subscription versions.

Trello

This free app provides more than just organization; it is actually a powerful project management solution for advanced task management at the personal or business levels. Trello is easy to use; users can simply write ideas organized as lists that make up a board. Each task or idea can be accompanied by supporting material such as photos, graphics, videos, recordings, comments, etc. Each board is a project that can be shared with other Trello users for the purpose of collaboration or to stay updated. Every update made is automatically synchronized.

Thanks to the rich app ecosystem provided by Windows 10, users can find apps that allow them to manage and organize their school, business and personal tasks, and they can do it on the go by clicking, tapping and swiping. On Thursday, The Inquirer reported that one of its users noticed a file on his computer that typically hosted the image files for the new Windows 10 operating system. That struck the user as odd since he hadn’t upgraded to Windows 10, hadn’t planned on upgrading, and hadn’t even reserved an upgrade.

THE READER’S STORY

According to the Inquirer reader, his computer had been experiencing a ton of obtuse symptoms that shouldn’t have existed.

“The symptoms are repeated failed ‘Upgrade to Windows 10’ in the WU update history and a huge 3.5GB to 6GB hidden folder labelled ‘$Windows.~BT’,” the reader said to Inquirer in an interview.

The reader said he never had any intentions to upgrade to Windows 10, even though Microsoft is offering Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 users a free upgrade to Windows 10 up to a year after launch.

MICROSOFT FESSES UP

Following the message, the news publication received from their reader, The Inquirer reached out to Microsoft for comment about the situation. According to them, Microsoft is automatically downloading the image files to users who have opted into receiving automatic updates through Windows Update.

“When the upgrade is ready, the customer will be prompted to install Windows 10 on the device,” said Microsoft.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THIS SCENARIO

While it is incredibly generous of Microsoft to offer Windows 10 to users for free, the company is overstepping its boundaries by making the operating system an automatic update. There are many reasons why this is wrong. First off, not all programs are compatible with Windows 10 right out of the gate. Small businesses that rely on older software might unknowingly download the Windows 10 update, which may cause some websites to not work correctly, at least without some finagling.

On-board storage is also a huge concern for consumers. What if you’re limited to flash storage? Having 6 GB stuffed on your machine “just in case” is a bit much. People with limited data caps are also at risk of reaching that ceiling without knowing it.

Cortana Gets More… Virtual

Parallels has been in the business of bringing OS-virtualization software for many years now, and they’ve grown to be quite good at it. Version 11 of their newest software is bringing a host of new features to the platform, but Cortana might be the most noteworthy, if not the most novel one.

Now, anyone familiar with Parallels, or their products, knows there is one caveat to this: Parallels Desktop is a virtual machine. That means that you won’t be installing the Cortana software directly onto your Mac computer in the same way you might install Photoshop. Instead, the software creates a virtual instance of a licensed version of Windows 10 in a blended sort of way.

This means that you are essentially running Windows 10 inside a window on your Mac. It’s a confusing concept to understand when you’re not experiencing the software yourself.

When Worlds Collide

Parallels is most notably known for the way they’ve been able to seamlessly blend virtual machines into Mac OS, and they’ve done some cool stuff with Cortana, too. For instance, Cortana will pop up from the OS X dock if you say “Hey, Cortana,” similar to how it works on Windows 10. It can also launch Mac apps in addition to its normal functions like checking the weather, searching the internet, and the usual.

Cortana aside, Mac users can also use features from OS X on Windows apps. For instance, Macs that sport Force-Touch touchpads can use them to look up word definitions in Microsoft Word.

You will need a Windows 10 license though, and if you don’t already have Parallels Desktop then the standalone will set you back $79.99. Current users will have to pay a $49.99 upgrade fee. The support software drivers need to be available, which will automatically be downloaded using Boot Camp Assistant. Boot Camp is Apple’s tool to allow Intel Mac owners to boot both OS X and Windows. This latest version was revealed on Thursday. Aside from this, the brand new Boot Camp 6 is also compatible with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1, and also comes with the official Windows 10 support. In addition Boot Camp comes with upgraded drivers for some of the hardware from Apple.

Windows 10 Is Available in Three Forms

On Friday an anonymous Microsoft employee reported that Windows 10 had been installed on 67 million PCs, which is surprising given that the OS was released to the public less than a week ago. Now those are some pretty impressive figures, but it seems like there is already a bit of stink being brought up by Mozilla about some of Microsoft’s express settings when installing the operating system.

The Big Stink

For most users, upgrading to Windows 10 is a relatively simple process, and most people will typically select the express install method. Mozilla, the guys behind the Firefox web browser, believe this is because the option to personalize the installation settings is subtly parked in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Now, that doesn’t seem to be a very good reason to be upset. After all, what company wouldn’t want to make it effortless for their users to upgrade to the newest iteration of their software? The issue lies in the fact that when a user selects the express installation method, it overrides the user’s previous default applications. What does it replace it with? Microsoft’s Windows Edge browser and Groove music.

Mozilla Believes This is an Aggressive Move

In a recent blog post, Chris Beard, CEO of Mozilla, went over why this is an offense against user choice. Beard accurately points out that it takes twice as many clicks to set default applications as in previous versions of the operating system.

Prior, a user only needed to open up a program that wasn’t set as the default and the operating system would prompt the user to set the program as a default if they wished to do so.

“These changes aren’t unsettling to us because we’re the organization that makes Firefox. They are unsettling because there are millions of users who love Windows and who are having their choices ignored, and because of the increased complexity put into everyone’s way if and when they choose to make a choice different than what Microsoft prefers,” said Beard in an open letter to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

Take the Power Back with Windows 10

Microsoft stands by its design decision stating, “We designed Windows 10 to provide a simple upgrade experience for users and a cohesive experience following the upgrade.”

For users who want to make sure they retain all of their default preferences, their best bet is to make sure they think ahead before upgrading. During the installation wizard, users will be prompted to select the express install method, but at the bottom of the screen is a custom settings button. Clicking this will allow a user to choose their own default apps rather than assuming the default programs in Windows 10.

Microsoft has finally launched the newest iteration of its operating system, Windows 10, and the reception has been largely positive. But as with most new things, a little change comes along with it. So, with the launch of Windows 10, Microsoft also saw fit to update their Privacy Policy and Service Agreement with a few modifications that users might find a bit worrisome.

Data Syncing

As soon as a user signs into Windows, the operating system begins syncing data to Microsoft’s servers. Most users might not think this is a big deal, and many people knowingly allow their data to be access by companies all the time. The issue is that Microsoft automatically opts all users in without giving them a choice before doing so.

The data being stored on Microsoft’s servers include browser history, favorites, passwords (even website and Wi-Fi passwords), apps currently opened, and more.

Advertising Profiles

Microsoft isn’t using Windows 10 to collect and store user data on its servers just for the heck of it. Signing into Windows 10 also generates an advertising ID unique to each user. This identifier is a way for Microsoft to allow developers and advertisers to build a profile about users in order to tailor advertisements for specific users. This can easily be turned off in the settings, but again, this is another option that should be opt-in rather than opt-out.

Cortana: Friend or Foe?

While some of these concerns were known about prior, the amount of data Cortana, Microsoft’s Windows 10 equivalent to Apple’s Siri, can accumulate and share about a user is certainly surprising. Fortunately, Cortana is an opt-in feature, and the disclaimer text fully discloses the software’s intention of collecting data ranging from voice input to communication data all upfront.

This issue is more ambiguous than the others because a virtual assistant can’t operate without these details. Cortana needs to be able to have access to this information in order to provide contextual answers to user queries.

Microsoft Owns Your Data

Most of these privacy concerns boil down to the fact that a user is essentially signing their data over to Microsoft.

“We will access, disclose and preserve personal data, including your content (such as the content of your emails, other private communications or files in private folders), when we have a good faith belief that doing so is necessary to protect our customers or enforce the terms governing the use of the services.”

That last bit of text, in tandem with the extensive amount of data Cortana can collect, is a bit worrisome, however. Microsoft certainly isn’t the only company who wants users to sign over all of their data, but consumers have a right to know what these companies plan to do with the data once they have it.

Windows 10 Launches With a Bang and a Few Privacy Issues

“Patch Tuesday” came a little early this week, as Microsoft issued an emergency fix on Monday for what the company has considered a “critical” security vulnerability that puts users of all Windows versions at risk. Those with automatic updating enabled won’t have to worry, but for those who choose to update their systems manually, you can download the Windows patch yourself here.

A MASSIVE SECURITY LOOPHOLE

Microsoft labelled this bug as “Critical,” indicating the highest possible level of threat. Without the Windows patch, users of all versions of Windows, including Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8 are subject to “remote code execution vulnerability,” allowing hackers to gain complete control over an unpatched system. Those who have been able to update to Windows 10 are also vulnerable to these cyberattacks. Through exploiting this bug, Microsoft claims hackers would be able to “…install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights.”

WHAT WINDOWS PATCH FIXES

Prior to the latest patch, Windows handled custom fonts in such a way that hackers were able to attack unsuspecting victims through OpenType: a common format for computer fonts developed by Microsoft and Adobe. By convincing Windows users to open documents or websites with the affected fonts, hackers are able to gain complete control over their systems, leaving un-patched Windows systems completely defenseless.

First signs of this vulnerability came earlier this month, with reports from security company FireEye’s Genwei Jiang and Mateusz Jurczyk—partners that work for Google’s security team—who reported corrupt emails leaked online from cyberattackers who successfully used the security loophole to breach the systems of Italian online surveillance firm Hacking Team.

IMPACT ON THE FUTURE OF WINDOWS

This security vulnerability has come at an extremely unfortunate time for Microsoft, who has been eager to put the universally-despised nightmare that is Windows 8 behind them, with the release of Windows 10 in just two weeks. Microsoft has been proud to announce on multiple occasions that Windows 10 would have the best security system to date, outshining all other operating systems—a claim that has since been massively weakened, as it has been shown to be just as susceptible to cyberattacks as its previous versions. However, Microsoft still aims to keep to their schedule, sticking to their original release date of July 29th.
