If you’ve been a faithful iPhone 6 Plus user then you might have noticed that some of your snapped photos turned out to be blurrier than they should have been. Good news: Apple announced a new camera replacement program called iSight.

What is iSight?

On Thursday Apple introduced a new camera replacement program called iSight, which will cover a “small percentage” of all iPhone 6 Plus smartphones sold between September 2014 and January 2015. There aren’t any details on what exactly is causing the phones to sometimes produce blurry images. There is some speculation that it could be a flaw in the iPhone 6 Plus’ optical image stabilization since it’s an omitted feature from the original iPhone 6.

Apple says the iSight program will allow users to send in their iPhone 6 Plus to be replaced absolutely free.

Is You Phone Affected?

If you’ve owned your iPhone 6 Plus since the beginning and haven’t noticed any blurry images yet, then chances are you’re fine. If you have shaky hands and aren’t quite sure then Apple has provided a way for users to check whether or not their phone is eligible for replacement.

Fortunately, Apple is allowing users a three year window to replace their cameras after they purchase the device.

If you’re already a Tile user then you’ve probably found the app to be a life saver on more than one occasion. After all, the little tile dongle could be attached to any object: keys, purse, wallet.. you name it, it could be attached.

So, previously, you would have a Tile placed on an object that you frequently misplaced. When the inevitable happened, all you’d need to do was open up the app on your smartphone–or visit the company’s web app–and you would push a button. Said lost item would then begin to sing, as long as you were within about 100 feet of the object, and the hunt for “where’s that noise coming from” would begin.

UPDATED FEATURES

The new iteration of Tile brings along a device that has a much slimmer footprint. The last generation Tile was a whopping 0.5 inches thick, which is a pretty bulky device; however, the company conveniently left out any measurements for the new generation.

The Tile ring has also been upgraded to 90 decibels, which is roughly three times louder than the previous generation. That means you shouldn’t have a problem hearing your keys when they’re in the pocket of a pair of pants that just happens to be sitting under three loads of laundry.

There are also three ways to find devices, too. The new Tiles have a giant “e” button on them that basically opens up a two-way channel. So if you have your keys (for once) but not your phone, then you can simply press the “e” on your Tile and perk up your ears while listening out for your phone. This works even if your phone is on silent or vibrate.

Let’s say you don’t have your keys or your phone. How can you find your tiles then? Now you can simply jump onto the computer and activate the Tile’s rings from there.

GETTING SOCIAL

The last feature is probably one of the more exciting ones. With GPS capabilities, users can turn their phones into Tiles. What’s notable about this? Let’s say you leave your phone on the bus, but there happens to be a Tile user on the same bus. Without the other Tile user realizing, their phone will send the GPS location of your phone to the web app so you can locate it.

AVAILABILITY

You can actually go to Tile’s site now and order the second generation device. One Tile will set you back about $25, but if you buy them in groups then you get a pretty significant discount. A set of four is only $70 rather than $100. The only real downside is that the battery inside each Tile only lasts about a year, so you’ll have to keep buying them over and over every year.

Smart objects are so abundant that most interact with at least one everyday, so the idea that a smart collar exists shouldn’t be as surprising as it is. The device that Squeaker is working on is essentially a smartwatch for your dog.

What It Does

Squeaker is the same company that developed the Poochlight, which is an LED dog collar that lights up at night to help you keep track of your dog.

This new smart collar acts much like a smartwatch or fitness tracker. It has a GPS tracker, temperature sensor, an accelerometer, bluetooth connectivity, a rechargeable battery, and a built-in OLED information display.

There is a corresponding Apple and Android app that will allow owners to create designated areas their pet is allowed to travel. If they go outside this range then Buddy will send an alert to the owner. The Apple app has a higher degree of control over the smart collar–allowing the owner to track their dogs activity via the Apple Health app, and allow you to change the color of the LEDs on the collar.

The smart collar doesn’t look too bad either. The black band is surrounded on both sides by strips of LEDs that light up during the night–similar to the Poochlight.

Squeaker is dedicated to providing dog owners with ways to protect their dogs in a number of different ways. The Buddy is one of the more high-end products, but the Poochlight offers a great solution for owners who enjoy taking their dogs for walks at night. There are also Poochlight leashes and harnesses that do the same thing as the collar.

Availability

Right now the smart collar is still just a kickstarter campaign. The estimated delivery date is sometime in Oct. 2015, but you can pre-order the smart collar right now. It comes in three variants, the Buddy Lite retails for $180, and includes all of the basic functionality. The Buddy FIT is $240 but comes with an OLED display and wireless charging dock. Apple has been in the news a lot lately, but the latest rumors say the company is likely working on a heads-up display (HUD) similar to what you’d find in the cockpit of a jet.

Apple’s Rumored Heads-Up Display

This latest batch of rumors comes from Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry. According to Chowdhry, Apple is working on a heads-up display that will cover between 27 to 50 inches of screen real estate, which will undoubtedly span across a vehicle’s entire windshield.

This HUD will give drivers pertinent information while they are driving through the use of “vivid” icons. Chowdhry also indicated that the system will be gesture controlled. This will allow users to maintain their attention on the road since their eyes will never leave the windshield.

Reusing Technology

Apple hasn’t commented on the rumors, which isn’t surprising. According to Chowdhry, the HUD still has quite some time before it will see mass-production. Although rumors of Apple’s self-driving cars means that the company can’t be too far off either.

The technology being developed in this project can also be used for several other projects as well. The curved-screen technology is equipped with sensors and could be used in TVs or a number of other devices the company could be working on. Chowdhry says that this is the “early stage of something that could be a lot bigger.”

Credibility

Rumors are rumors though, and so far Chowdhry is the only analyst reporting that Apple is working on a HUD, so all of this should be taken with a grain of salt.

Apple executive Jeff Williams has called cars the “ultimate mobile device,” so the idea that they are developing a HUD isn’t entirely farfetched. Many auto manufacturers are working on self-driving cars along with bigger and better technology to put inside them.

Project Titan is what Apple is calling its own self-driving car project that is currently being tested at an old navy base. It was newer technology, so many people shrugged it off. Years later, the cost of flash memory (and storage in general) has decreased dramatically, but smartphone manufacturers are still charging $100 more for each upgrade. What’s the deal?

Manufacturing Cost

If you wanted to buy a subsidized 16GB iPhone 6, then you would be looking at spending $299. From there a 64GB version will run you $399, and a 128GB iPhone will run you a whopping $499–still subsidized, mind you. According to a new report coming from TechInsights, a patent consultant that performs gadget tear-downs, 16GB of flash storage runs Apple around $7.55. Doing the math, that means adding 64GB of memory should run Apple around $30, but we have to remember that Apple is already paying the cost for 16GB, since that’s what is included in the base model; that brings the cost down to $22.65, but they charge their customers $100 for the upgrade. Similarly, users buying the 128GB version are paying an extra $200 over the base model, while the extra storage only cost Apple around $60. Apple isn’t the only company to blame, however. Samsung actually has higher profit margins on its 128GB Galaxy S6 since it only costs them $44 to include the extra storage.

Micro SD Cards

For the longest time, microSD cards have been one of the best ways to mitigate the need for buying a smartphone with more on-board storage. Why pay an extra $100 for increased storage when you can purchase a microSD card for just around $25 on Amazon? The unfortunate reality is that many smartphone manufacturers are beginning to omit microSD card slots from their phones altogether, forcing power users to fork over their hard-earned cash. Now users are going to need to find an alternate way to store their information.

Looking to the Cloud

A lot of smartphone enthusiasts have been turning toward a cloud solution as an alternative solution to having extra on-board storage. Apps like Spotify and Google Music allow users to stream music to their phone, and many companies like DropBox, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft all have cloud storage solutions that are free for most users. The biggest caveat is that users will typically need to have a healthy data plan or be surrounded by Wi-Fi that is easily accessible. The unfortunate truth is that paying for larger data plans and subscriptions for streaming services end up being more expensive in the long run when compared to the $100 smartphone users were trying to save in the first place.

Samsung Has Decided To Contest the Fine

Samsung has chosen to contest the large fine that was given for allegedly infringing on copyrights of at least two dozen Apple patents. Currently, they have two choices, to either pay the fine, or to take the case all the way to the highest court of the land. The Federal Court also rejected Samsung’s appellate plea for the patent violations, noting that “For decades, they have invested heavily in developing revolutionary innovations in the mobile industry and beyond.” Samsung lost its appeal case against the original court ruling that ordered the technology company to pay $548 million for patent infringement of Apple’s designs. The said in a statement that they are disappointed that their request for an en banc hearing of the United States Court of Appeals was denied. They also said that they are confident that their products do not infringe on Apple’s design patents and they will continue to take the appropriate measures to protect their intellectual property and products.

The Current Patent Design Infringement Covers Only Minor Details

The patent design infringement in question at this time only covered a few minor details of the smartphone design, but doesn’t necessarily incorporate thousands of patents as originally alleged by Apple. Samsung, along with other companies related, believe that voting in favor of Apple could give them “unprecedented power” and promote unhealthy competition in the tech and mobile industry. The company state that if this decision is upheld, that it it would have a devastating impact on companies who spend billions of dollars annually to research and develop their respective complex technology and their individual components.

Apple Has Made No Comment, But This Isn’t the First Time They’ve Been to Court

Windows 10 Is Available in Three Forms

As far as the brand new Boot Camp 6 tool that was released by Apple that also supports Windows 10, Apple released a statement saying that Windows 10 is now available in the form of a USB flash drive, an installation DVD and an ISO file, all directly from Microsoft. If your Mac already has Windows 8.0 on it currently, you will have to upgrade to Windows 8.1 first before you can upgrade to Windows 10.

Facebook has been in the news quite a bit as of late — mostly in regards to testing new ideas like its giant drone that will spread free Wi-Fi over certain parts of the world, or testing out their new storefront. Now, it looks like Facebook is getting ready to compete toe-to-toe with Twitter as the company is looking into developing a news application that functions quite a bit like Twitter.

Not So Fast

It’s definitely true that a lot of people rely on Twitter for announcements and breaking news, but there are a lot of other social features that allows users to interact with each other. The Facebook app that Business Insider reported about is more focused on the business nature. That means users won’t necessarily be interacting with each other, and they won’t be creating content either.

Instead, Business Insider suggests that the app will be a “broadcast-only experience.” Facebook will only be allowing partnered companies to produce content. Users will follow various topics they are interested in and receive instant alerts that are limited to 100 characters — slightly less than Twitter’s 140 limitation.

Facebook Hopes to Clean Up the User Experience

One aspect that Facebook hopes will give it an advantage over Twitter is reliant on how Facebook’s new app, currently in alpha, will curate posts better. Information about the app is still pretty vague, but Facebook is hoping that news won’t dissipate into the social masses as quickly as it happens on Twitter.

Facebook believes that this provides new users with a bad experience since the more people they follow, the faster their Twitter feed moves. Some users may never see a post on Twitter unless the tweet is retweeted by someone else or the original tweeter, but with Facebook’s new app, news will stay relevant for longer.

Pebble just announced their newest smartwatch, the Pebble Time, but that wasn’t the only thing the company had to show off. The Pebble Time Steel is, as the name implies, a higher-end version of the same watch but with some extra must-have features.

An Upgrade from the Upgrade

The original Pebble Watch took the market by surprise since it was really one of the first smartwatches to hit the market, and it was developed by a startup company. The Pebble Time takes some of the things that the Pebble Watch did well and improves them across the board. The Pebble Time Steel takes things up another notch. First off, the entire smartwatch is made of steel, which looks leagues ahead of the original Pebble Watch. Interestingly, the Pebble Time Steel is also water resistant up to 50 meters — inline with the original Pebble Watch, but better than the Pebble Time. It also sports a 182 ppi screen and has a higher rated battery. The most notable change to the two devices involves its e-ink display. Aside from the higher pixel density, the display is also all in color now, as opposed to the black display of the previous model.

New Software

The new Pebble software is called Pebble Timeline, and it gives users more functionality when it comes to you calendar, weather, and many other things. These are all features present in the old watch, but Timeline changes the way users interact with this information. Now, the buttons on the side of the devices allow users to navigate pinned events. The up button corresponds to past events, the middle button is for present events, and the down button is for events that are coming up in the future. The good news? Pebble Timeline is coming to the Pebble Watch as well, so all Pebble users will be able to take advantage of the new software.

For anyone who just wants to upgrade their old Pebble Watch, you can grab the Time straight off the website today. It’s $199.99 and comes with either black, white, or red bands. The Pebble Time Steel only opened for pre-order, but has more options. For $249.99 users can have their choice between a black, tan, and red genuine leather band, or can get a black, silver, or gold stainless steel band for $299.99. Shipping for the Pebble Time Steel is currently set for 6 to 8 weeks.

Business Insider is reporting that Apple employees are currently testing a new feature in iOS that could help bridge the gap between people who like using voicemail and people who don’t.

The Death of Voicemail

Apple plans to use Siri’s speech-to-text transcription abilities in order to relay Voicemail directly to the user without them having to go in and actually accessing the feature. This is a great solution since people either love Voicemail or hate it. Business Insider correctly assumes that most people like to leave voicemails because they’re quick and easy, but people receiving voicemails typically don’t like to stop what they’re doing, and dial into their Voicemail to receive information that could be easily be received through a simple text. Apple’s solution gives users the best of both worlds.

How Will the Process Work?

The whole process is relatively simple on the user’s end, though there are obviously more complex things going on behind the scenes. When makes a phone call that isn’t received by who they are trying to call, Siri will answer the phone call rather than having the call be picked up by a regular audio receiver.

The report says that the iCloud Voicemail system that Siri will be utilizing has the ability to tell the caller where the receiving user is and why they aren’t able to pick up the phone — a feature that is hopefully optional. But the gist is that Siri will listen to the caller’s message and transcribe it in a text message.

Apple will most likely be using the same process Siri already uses in order to transcribe speech-to-text when users send oral text messages. So, while Apple has stated that Siri is due for another upgrade when iOS 9 hits, don’t expect messages to be perfect every time.

The Release Schedule

Apple isn’t the first to utilize a function like this. Google Voice users have had this function for years, though the messages are mostly useless unless the caller speaks incredibly clear.

Apple is currently prepping the new voicemail feature for a release sometime in 2016.

In the latest set of leaks involving the Apple iPhone 6s, new images have appeared that seem to point towards the company using Force Touch its upcoming pair of handsets.

May the Force Be With You

Unfortunately, Apple’s newest Force Touch has less to do with the Star Wars universe and more to do with what the name implies in a literal sense. It’s a press-sensitive technology that Apple has created to help a device understand the difference between different variations of touch. The most obvious use of this new technology would allow new gesture features to be implemented based on soft and hard presses — similar to short and long presses. This isn’t exactly a new feature, however. Apple first unveiled the feature earlier this year when it unveiled the Apple Watch and the newest MacBooks.

Source of the Apple iPhone 6s Leak

The Apple iPhone 6s leak itself comes from a Chinese repair firm called Geekbar on Weibo, but it was spotted by Steven Hemmerstoffer of Nowhereelse.fr first. The sources seem to be pretty legitimate, and the accompanying photographs show of a lot of details that support the claims.

The shape of the LCD display is largely the same, but components of the display differ in some key ways, though there are still some unknown details.

According to an Apple Insider, there is a rectangular cutout in the upper center of the screen which houses a smaller component of the same shape. They believe this could be a grounding insert. On the backside of the display, the edges have rivets rather than screws that are keeping it in place. And there are some mysterious black dots that run along the edges of the display that aren’t found on the previous device.

Apple Ramps Up Production of Their New Force Touch Displays

Whether these rumors are to be believed is almost besides the point now. According to suppliers, Apple has already started to ramp up production of these new displays and it just makes sense that Apple would be bringing this technology to one of their best selling devices. What new features Apple will be introducing with the Apple iPhone 6s remains to be seen, but stay tuned for more details soon.

To, probably, no one’s surprise, Apple is set to announce a new Apple TV sometime in September 2015, alongside the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus announcement.

For the first time in ever, Apple will force the iPhone to Share a Stage

Apple’s September event has historically been dedicated strictly to announcing iPhone devices, but this year the company will be demonstrating how the newest iteration of Apple TV will interact with the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

The idea is to bring Apple’s collection of Apple-TV centered HomeKit devices into focus. The company has been making a major push into smart home devices, but things have been slow to catch on.

Rumors placed the original announcement of the new Apple TV at this year’s WWDC 2015, a developer conference put on by Apple, but the event has come and gone without so much of a peep about the new devices.

What’s Happening With the New Apple TV

Outside of rumor and speculation, there isn’t really much known about the device. Apple has performed admirably in keeping a tightly run ship — at least so far.

According to some rumors, the device will feature a slimmer bodied chassis along with some new hardware upgrades. Supposedly the device will feature Apple’s new A8 SoC (system on chip), have increased storage, feature a “drastically” improved remote, an improved operating system, and Siri voice control.

Apple fans will also have a subscription based internet-TV service that Apple hopes to launch soon, though probably not in time for the announcement in September. In fact, one source says it may not launch until sometime in 2016.

What to Expect When Expecting

While an announcement for the new Apple TV is expected, it won’t be what the conference is focused on. Apple will be using this time to also make an announcement for the new iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, which will likely look identical to their predecessors, but sport faster processors and potentially better cameras. Demonstrations will also be made with the new set of iPhones and how they interact with Apple’s upcoming generation of smart devices.

Like an answered prayer, Google has decided to do away with interstitial ads on mobile devices.

What are Interstitial Ads?

The name given to these interstitial ads isn’t exactly descriptive if you don’t already know what they’re referring to. These are the ads that occupy the space between your mobile browser and the website you’re trying to view. A popular one, for instance, appears while trying to visit almost any forum. A user will likely be shown an ad saying something along the lines of, “Hey, you can view this forum via Tapatalk. Click here to download.”

Google Breaks Down the Statistics

In a new study done by Google, the company found out that these ads were just shy of being completely useless. In fact, so many people ignored these ads that Google decided to ditch the ad format completely.

Google used Google+ as the front end page for the study. When users would visit the site, they would be welcomed by an interstitial ad. From the study, only 9 percent of the users actually clicked on the ad, though that doesn’t mean they downloaded the app. That’s a pretty small number, but a staggering 69 percent of the users high-tailed it off the page entirely. A 9 percent click-through rate (CTR) actually isn’t that bad, but having so many users simply abandon the site altogether is pretty alarming.

When Google removed the interstitial ad they noticed that website activity had increased almost 17 percent while app downloads remained relatively stagnant.

“Based on these results, we decided to permanently retire the interstitial,” said Google+ software engineer David Morell.

Making Changes for the Better

A difficult part of Google’s job is maintaining harmony between the audience and the advertisers. Ads aren’t bad, but users want to see ads relevant to their interest and that they consider valuable, whereas advertisers want a good return on investment (ROI). After seeing the numbers, it was clear to Google that neither party was benefitting from the ad format.

Google will be publishing its findings in hopes that others will take a second look at using interstitials on their platforms.

When Google showcased its videos at 60 frames per second, they were very excited about this development. Only a little over a month later, after they launched the 60 frames per second 1080p full HD, and 720p HD live streaming, they are now offering this update to live video streaming, the YouTube app for Android and iOS devices. This is all in addition to being able to watch 60 frames per second video on the desktop.

These capabilities have been available for Android users as of last month, but there was never officially announced. They have also been available for YouTube for a while due to the increasing popularity of its platform.

MOST FILMS ARE IN 24 TO 48 FRAMES PER SECOND

Films with higher frame rates, also known as HFR, offers a large increase in the detail of the picture. To put it in perspective, there have only been a few films released to movie theatres in HFR. Movies such as The Hobbit are one of these films. The Hobbit, however, was one 48 frames per second. The 60 frames per second options are most popular among gamers who have already been using this technology for a while.

SUPPORTED THROUGH CHROME AND SAFARI

This live streaming is for the internet with the support of Google’s Chrome and Apple’s Safari browser. Now this update will allow for Android and iOS users to choose between 60fps, 720p, or 1080p without the app updating. This feature is only available for the official YouTube app, and not via the mobile browser. Any Windows phone users currently aren’t able to view videos and live streams at 60fps as those who use YouTube through third party applications.

Youtube 60fps playback ISN’T NEW FOR GAMERS

Those who play video games are already familiar with the 60fps game streaming videos on YouTube. This feature was added to the desktop over a year ago. The higher frame rates are desirable for smoother game play and avoiding stuttering that might cause frame rates to dip.
