Tropical Storm Erika is rapidly advancing toward the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean, USA Today reports. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the storm formed overnight. It is currently centered about 750 miles to the Leeward Islands’ east.

WHERE THE STORM IS GOING

Caribbean islands such as Antigua, Montserrat, St. Kitts, Nevis and Barbuda have been issued tropical storm watches. According to the NHC, these announcements are given when sustained winds of 39 to 73 miles per hour are thought to be possible because of a storm that would occur within around 48 hours.

HOW HURRICANE ERIKA STARTED

According to Decoded Science, the first “serious” wave associated with Erika happened around ten days ago on the coast of Africa, and analysts have detected warm temperatures in Caribbean waters that support the assertion.

In five days, it is expected that Erika will “skirt” the most severe winds and become a Category 1 hurricane. Its winds are currently 45 mph; it is moving west at 20 miles per hour; and according to Orlando’s News 13, the storm’s pressure is 1003 mb / 29.62 inches.

Out of this year’s hurricane season on the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Erika is the fifth of its kind. Another storm named Danny became a hurricane recently and according to the Washington Post, Danny was a Category 3 storm just days ago. Since Monday, it is considered by the NHC to be dead because of a lack of “sufficient organized deep convection” caused by strong upper-level winds and dry air.

THE STORM’S POSITIVE EFFECT

Despite the danger of the storm, Tropical Storm Erika will bring rain that will be ecologically beneficial to the plants in the areas where it will occur. Many of the islands that Erika is expected to “hit” are undergoing a drought. According to Decoded Science, Danny positively affected the Puerto Rican ecosystem, which was going through the driest July on record.
