They never get old. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/why-abisko-is-the-best-place-to-experience-northern-lights/

Experiencing the spectacular Northern Lights is probably everyone’s dream, although standing in freezing cold weather for hours in the darkness waiting and hoping for the lights to appear might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Abisko: 200km north of the Arctic Circle

In January, I visited Abisko in (very) northern Sweden, one of the best known places in Lapland. My trip included standing for up to four hours in -40°F in complete darkness, but the spectacular northern lights phenomenon was worth the wait and the pain.

Abisko is also where “Kungsleden” starts, the country’s biggest and most famous trail which measures over 400km and attracts thousands of hardcore nature-lovers every year.

In the winter, though, people travel there to see fluorescent green lights dancing in the sky and experience the arctic circle’s dark winter days. As a matter of fact, the sun almost never rises during the season. However, as many of you imagine it being completely dark, note that it is more close to “dawn” for a few hours per day, with the snow playing a big role in brighting up the atmosphere.

Lonely Planet’s best spot for Auroras

The UN has named 2015 the International “Year of Light” and Lonely Planet chose Abisko as the number one place (in a top 10 released last year) to experience the Northern Lights. What makes this location a great spot is the likelihood of clear skies due to its geographical position. Abisko is located in a valley surrounded by mountains, which often help in keeping clouds away and increasing the number of clear nights.

A cloudless sky is essential for you to experience the Northern Lights and so is complete darkness. So, being anywhere in Lapland is not enough. You ought to find the right spot far from any kind of light pollution and hope that no clouds get in the way.

As we are talking about nature and not fiction, Northern Lights might take time to appear. They start by being weak and fade with the sky, which is the main reason why, at first, they are often confused with clouds. However, experts told me there that the way to differentiate a could from an “aurora” at its early stage, is to check if stars are still visible behind it. Clouds would impede the view of anything they cover, while northern lights don’t.

Never go without a good camera

One great piece of advice is not to travel all the way to Lapland without a very good camera and a tripod. If you rely on your iPhone, you will end up with a number of pitch black shots which could be quite disappointing. So, make sure you have a high quality device with you which is able to shoot pictures with high exposure.

If you don’t have a good camera (like in my case), you can rent one there through organised expeditions. I took all the photos below in Abisko this winter:

Wall decor just got simple. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/photo-enthusiasts-meet-flixi-the-user-friendly-picture-frame-123/

Canadian company Toboggan has just launched a Kickstarter campaign promoting FLIXI, a product that allows framing and hanging a photo, in less than a minute, without any tools or holes in the wall.

Usually the products originating from technology and design merging together are impressive. This is no exception. FLIXI has all the characteristics to make our lives easier.

Re-imagining the traditional photo frame

Let’s be honest. Framing and hanging photos starts as an exciting task but slowly turns into a tedious and stressful one for most people. Either the frame is not straight or your landlord asks you to pay hundreds of dollars from your pocket because the wall is now full of holes.

A group of Montreal industrial designers and avid photographers came up with a solution: making framing photos “just as simple, spontaneous and stylish as posting to your virtual wall”.

Photo Enthusiasts! Meet FLIXI the User-Friendly Picture Frame - Clapway

You don’t need any tools

Unlike conventional picture frames that use nails and hooks, FLIXI attaches to the wall with a double-sided tape and can be easily removed without leaving residues on the wall. No holes, no damage.

We all know how challenging it can be to place a single picture using traditional frames. For some paranormal reasons most of the time the picture frame doesn’t look straight. That “often goes beyond the limit of our patience,” according to Toboggan’s founders, Laurent and Kurt.

So imagine perfectly leveling and aligning a series of pictures to form a gallery of frames without any guesswork. With FLIXI you can. The product has an anchor and built-in level incorporated into the frame as well as a WallSnap system preventing the adhesive from sticking to the wall until it’s in the right spot and level.

Furthermore, FLIXI is flexible, easy to insert and remove; it’s stable and solid unlike the thin glass of conventional frames, thus making it completely safe even to have an army of kids running around your house.

Fully committed to local manufacturing, this group of designers made sure that FLIXI also works as a tabletop frame, and that it comes in 8 colours.

Use an app to preview your future wall

The company created a web application that helps users preview their future wall. You can upload pictures and build your own gallery wall.
Photo Enthusiasts! Meet FLIXI the User-Friendly Picture Frame

Over the past 16 years, this group of Canadian designers has been creating playful and mindful interactive experiences and objects, such as the award-winning Xenith football helmet and Capsul Case, for many the best minimalist wallet in the world.

For more information about FLIXI check out their Facebook page, Twitter account and Kickstarter campaign.

Poop is great. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/the-ecological-power-of-poop/

Everyone does it, and now there are more uses for it other than funny Snapchat pictures you send to gross out your friends. Wait, you don’t do that?–I mean, I don’t either, I’ve just heard of it. It’s a crappy topic of conversation at dinner, and sometimes having to talk about it downright stinks. However, behind that, poop is power! It’s a type of biomass.

What is that, you ask? It is a biological material that comes from living, or recently living organisms. Typically the term is used when discussing energy derived from plants, but it doesn’t always have to be from greenery. The most common form of this type of biofuel energy that we all know is burning wood. Other forms of biomass fuels can come from wheat stalks, corn (another very common type) or sugar cane. Cooking oil is another widely known form. These types of fuels are considered renewable resources, which is why they are constantly being advocated for in place of what we currently use. Biomass materials also take carbon out of the air and release only the same amount of carbon when burned.

The Ecological Power of Poop - Clapway

The Power Of Poop As Fuel

Poop, along with rotting plants, is specifically considered a biogas. We all know that our poop has methane and carbon dioxide gases in it. These gasses are collected from burning the poop in an airtight container and extracting the gas, a process called gasification. This method produces energy.

Who Uses The Ecological Power Of Poop?

Farmers in Vermont have been using the power of poop for many years. This process begins with the farmers throwing anaerobic bacteria onto the cow poop. The bacteria eat away at the waste and then produce methane themselves. These farms often produce excess amounts, so they send their leftovers to nearby homes in the area, thereby giving them a more ecological form of power.

Energy doesn’t just come from animal poop. Humans can also produce it. Researchers in China have made a special toilet that takes human waste and produces hydrogen energy for use in the home. Though it cannot yet fuel an entire home, it can be used up to 40 times a day creating more and more energy to assist in sustaining your home. Another invention out of Singapore, also a no-mix, vacuum toilet, separates liquid and solid wastes and converts the former into energy and the latter into fertilizer.

This type of biofuel doesn’t have to be used solely in the home, and maybe one day can sustain us in a greater capacity. It sounds gross, and I definitely wouldn’t want the job of the person who has the messy job of handling poop all day, but it’s our duty to find alternatives to the nonrenewable resources we are currently using up. We no longer have to waste our waste, because poop is power!

Imagine being the director of the OPM... - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/us-opm-cyber-attack-leads-to-total-shut-down-of-background-check-system-pending-investigation-234/

After a cyber attack on the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) left millions of Government Employees information vulnerable to thieves, the OPM has shut down access to the e-QIP background check pending the ongoing investigation due to a potential failure in the system’s security measures. Shutting down the system has created an odd situation for employers seeking to hire, and employees seeking work, by placing them in a position where neither can verify the background of the employee.

Office of Personnel Management’s position on the present state of affairs

While the office is continuing to investigate the OPM cyber attack which left Government employees vulnerable many are still speculating exactly how many have had the privacy of their information compromised by the intrusion into the Government databases.

Earliest reports from OPM on June 4, 2015 state that around four million may have had their data compromised, and urges Government employees to take measures to ensure that they will not become victims of the OPM cyber attack. Director of OPM, Katherine Aculet, is under a large amount of scrutiny for the department’s breach and issued a message stating, “Protecting our Federal employee data from malicious cyber incidents is of the highest priority at OPM. We take very seriously our responsibility to secure the information stored in our systems, and in coordination with our agency partners, our experienced team is constantly identifying opportunities to further protect the data with which we are entrusted.”

Tough Decision to shut down the e-QIP background check system

This is the largest scale attack on the OPM since its formation on January 1st, 1979, and in these difficult times, difficult decisions had to be made. Already under fire for the OPM cyber attack which began in April, Achulet made the difficult decision on Monday the shut down the background checking system during an in-depth review of what could have allowed hackers to enter into the databases.

The system is expected to stay down for at least 4-6 weeks while investigations continue, and Achulet had this to say about shutting down the program, “The security of OPM’s networks remains my top priority as we continue the work outlined in my IT Strategic Plan, including the continuing implementation of modern security controls. This proactive, temporary suspension of the e-QIP system will ensure our network is as secure as possible for the sensitive data with which OPM is entrusted.”

While the future of the Government employees who have had their information compromised is uncertain, for the time being OPM is doing everything possible to ensure that as few employees as possible become victims. In this case, that means shutting down a major part of their department altogether pending further investigation.

"In case no one ever told you, you can’t cheat your way through life." - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/3-reasons-why-you-really-should-not-fast/

Trying to lose weight? Want to be healthier? It turns out fasting may be in style, and quite beneficial to your diet. A new study suggest that fasting may actually be good for you. People eat normally and then once every few weeks they fast, tricking their body into thinking it’s starving.

According to Valter Longo, the fast-mimicking strategy has been proven to work. When Longo and his team rotated between giving yeast a nutrient medium and fasting them, they lived longer. In mice, researchers saw elevated levels of stem cells, which could possibly mean that the starvation like diet eliminated old, weaker cells in order for young healthy cells to surface. These mice also had less fat, fewer cancers, and less bone density loss. Although this study claims that fasting has a number of benefits, here are three reasons why you really should not fast:

1. Bad Breath

I know we have all experienced the disgusting taste that is left in our mouth when we go long periods of time without eating. That horrid taste, and smell, is not beneficial to you or anyone near you. When you fast, your body goes into ketosis mode and your blood becomes more acidic; which causes bad breath. You may lose the weight but no one will want to be around you if your breath smells like road kill.

2. Weight Loss is Temporary

The weight you lose, from fasting, is mainly water and stored carbohydrates. So as soon as you start to eat normally again, your weight will return to its previous state. In case no one ever told you, you can’t cheat your way through life. You should not fast in order to cut corners. You have to work hard to achieve your body goals.

3 Reasons Why You Really Should Not Fast - Clapway

3. Stress Increases

The change in your eating habits and lack of food and water can result in less sleep. Less sleep means you become stressed out and easily irritated. Even if you get the body you want, your personality will drive people away.

The study conducted by Longo and his team presents many benefits to fasting. But I think the cons outweigh the pros. If you want to lose weight, work out. If you want to build muscle, work out. If you want the body of your dreams, just work out. I have given you three reasons why you really should not fast, take them.

3 Reasons Why You Really Should Not Fast

A nightmare in Liberia. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/ebola-is-back-liberian-village-under-quarantine-234/

After Liberia was declared Ebola-free six weeks ago, a body of a dead citizen was tested positive for the virus, plunging a village into quarantine. That’s right — Ebola is back.

Deputy health minister, Tolbert Nyenswah said tests confirmed that Ebola is back after the deceased 17-year-old man, from a town near the main airport, had died of the disease. The conditions under which the young man contracted Ebola are still uncertain.

First case of Ebola in Liberia since country declared virus-free

Early investigations suggest that the boy was found in Margibi County among the worst impacted areas during the previous outbreak. A team collected bodily fluid, and the village where the boy was from was immediately placed under quarantine to prevent further infections. The body was buried according to anti-Ebola safety guidelines.

According to the BBC, this is the country’s first reported case since the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Liberia virus-free in May.

In Guinea, Ebola infections persist

Ebola is back in Liberia, but in Guinea, it had not even left. The boy fell ill June 21, died three days later in a region close to Guinea, where Ebola infections continue to persist.

In May 2015, cases of Ebola began to appear in Tanene, Dubreka Prefecture, Guinea. This is an area that had previously been unaffected.

The international health community is now doing its best to ensure that the outbreak remains limited to that area. The World Health Organization (WHO) and partners have launched a surveillance campaign to find individuals who might be infected while providing support to families.

Around 20 to 27 weekly cases of Ebola

According to WHO statistics, since the end of May, the weekly case incidence of Ebola appears to have stalled at between 20 and 27 cases .

More than 11,000 people have died of the disease since the outbreak in West Africa. The vast majority of the victims were found in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone. Experts fear that with the start of the rainy season, the number of cases will rise.

Cases continue to arise from unknown sources of infection, and to be detected only post-mortem. The international health community, has mobilized its largest response to what has been labeled “the most severe and most complex outbreak in the history of this disease”.

Here"s something we don"t think about all the time (unless being morbid). - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/water-overdose-exercise-associated-hyponatremia-can-kill-123/

How much water does it take to kill a person? According to new guidelines from an international expert panel, if you are an athlete you should drink only when thirsty in order to avoid exercise-associated hyponatremia (EAH) — a form of water overdose.

In the summer of 2014, two otherwise healthy 17-year-old high-school football players died. In both cases, the common denominator was excessive fluid consumption — a peril that is often underestimated.

What’s exercise-related hyponatremia?

Water overdose occurs when a person drinks too much fluids and the kidneys cannot “flush them out”. This results in the excess water entering the cells and causing them to swell. That’s when something as vital as water can quickly turn lethal, according to the guidelines published in the Clinical Journal of Sport Medicine.

Dr. Mitchell H. Rosner, from the Division of Nephrology at University of Virginia Health System, said that inaccurate statements can lead to dangerous behaviours and subsequent exercise-related hyponatremia.

Blanket statements that can be found on the Internet such as “don’t wait until you feel thirsty” have the potential for “disastrous consequences” as they reinforce the idea that near constant fluid consumption during athletic events is a judicious and even necessary thing to do, Rosner said.

Less is more

What could therefore be effective water overdose prevention techniques? The first is perhaps the most physiological and simple: drink according to thirst, according to Rosner.

Sports medicine physician James Winger, said that modest to moderate levels of dehydration are tolerable and pose little risk to otherwise healthy athletes. In fact, an athlete can lose up the 3 percent of his of her body weight during a competition without negatively affecting performance levels.

Exercise-related hyponatremia has mostly occurred during endurance competitions and military exercises, but the authors of the guidelines claim that it is not just athletes engaging in strenuous exercise that are prone to the condition. Cases have also been reported among people participating in “zen activities” such as lawn bowls and yoga.

At present, statistics show that at least 14 athletes are estimated to have died as a result of EAH.

Water overdose, intoxication is a real thing

The American Chemistry Society says that it takes about 6 liters of water to kill a 165-pound person. Death by water, or water intoxication as it’s officially known, is not a rare phenomenon.

It’s common among young people who challenge themselves to “water drinking contests,” or athletes who mistakenly over-hydrate while training, Scientific American reported.

To avoid water overdose, these new guidelines are targeting athletes in particular. Experts say that administering a concentrated saline solution containing 3 percent sodium — about three times higher than the concentration in normal saline solution, is a life-saving technique that can treat exercise-associated hyponatremia.

Space cadets, save the date! July 14 is when New Horizons FINALLY reaches Pluto. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/save-the-date-july-14-nasas-new-horizons-spacecraft-to-fly-by-pluto-234/

On July 14, 2015, NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft will fly by Pluto after nearly a decade of travel. The space mission is expected to bring new findings about the mysterious dwarf planet’s atmosphere and its five moons.

Save the Date: July 14 NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft to Fly By Pluto - Clapway

July 14 New Horizons Spacecraft will visit former planet Pluto

Save the date, space enthusiasts as NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft flies by Pluto on July 14, 2015. The spacecraft will be making history after journeying 3.6 billion miles over the past 9 years. In January 2006, the spacecraft became the first launched in hopes of reaching the former planet. In two weeks, the dwarf planet will finally have a visitor as New Horizons hovers over 7,800 miles above Pluto’s icy surface around 7:49 a.m.

Though New Horizons will arrive on July 14, we won’t be privy to the first pictures of Pluto for a few days and it may even take months for all the data gathered to be compiled. However, what’s a couple of extra days when we’ve been waiting for nearly a decade for this moment?

The space mission will also reveal the first glimpses of Charon, one of Pluto’s moons. After flying by Pluto, the spacecraft will travel along to explore the Kuiper belt, the solar system that Pluto and other dwarf planets call home.

Remember When Pluto Was a Planet? New Horizons Does!

When New Horizons blasted off on 19 January 2006, it became the fastest space mission ever launched. The main target was to reach our farthest planet Pluto, which Clyde Tombaugh discovered in February 1930. However, only seven months after the spacecraft launched, its mission would be changed as Pluto was officially demoted from planet to dwarf planet.

The demotion came after heated debate in the astronomical community drew proposals regarding Pluto’s inclusion or exclusion as a planet. The proposals used the International Astronomical Union’s definition of a planet to rule out our beloved Pluto.

Though Pluto meets the first and second criterion of being a planet–it is a celestial body orbiting the Sun with a sufficient enough mass to assume a round shape–because of the third criterion, which specifies that the planet must clear the area around its orbit.

Alan Stern, leader of the New Horizons mission, was quoted as saying he was embarrassed that less than five percent of astronomers cast a vote in the debate. Regardless of the vote, Stern could take comfort in the fact that New Horizons had already launched and would not be called back.

What will the New Horizons Spacecraft Reveal about Pluto?

Scientists and researchers involved in the New Horizons mission aren’t completely positive about what the space probe will find on Pluto. However, plenty of possibilities are in orbit in the astronomical community as to what that spacecraft will reveal besides the icy terrain. Some theories include lakes of liquid neon, an equatorial mountain range, and massive cryogeysers.

With all the speculation, everyone is eagerly awaiting July 14 for whatever images and secrets the New Horizons mission may divulge about Pluto, which is still our favorite (dwarf) planet.

We need this Scandinavian law in our countries. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/we-need-this-law-in-denmark/

I bet you read about Denmark being the world’s happiest country more than once, although in the last “happiness report” it ranked 3rd following Norway and Switzerland.

Denmark is also the country where citizens pay extremely high taxes, but are happy to do so as they receive a large number of benefits. These benefits include free education, student grants, childcare, health care, and so on.

After living in this small and flat Scandinavian country for six months, there is one important aspect of their culture I have noticed: the adherence to social norms. In fact, if you visit Denmark and end up anywhere but Copenhagen–the capital, so, not the best expression of the country’s culture, a few things will stand out:

An all-black closet

The biggest one among these, is that all Danes look and dress the same. They have a passion for black clothing, and it is one of the first things that catches your eye when travelling to Denmark. The phrase “once you go black, you never go back” might be the best one to describe the country’s dress code. Many joke about how all Danes look like they are dressed for a funeral, by sticking to the all-black trend, however they know how to style it well and elegantly. So, unless the Danes you meet are rebels who refuse to stick to the norm, it is extremely likely that they will be wearing a black jacket, black pants and Nike trainers (black ones, obviously).

Denmark: Where Showing Off is (Really) Uncool

Behind the all-black dress code, hides the biggest and most interesting aspect of Danish (and Nordic) culture. If you happen to travel up here, whether it is for leisure or work, you ought to know that Scandinavians never tend to stand out. Just to put things in perspective, Denmark’s neighbouring country Sweden bases its culture on one word: “lagom”, which has no direct translation to English. It essentially means “not too much and not too little” and it lies at the heart of the country’s manners, where nobody feels like they’re better than anyone else and there is little to no attempt to show off through fancy cars or expensive brands.

Janteloven: The “Law” Behind Great Dane Behaviour

This pattern of group behaviour within Denmark, Sweden and Norway has a name – Janteloven (Danish for “Law of Jante”), which negatively portrays the attitude towards individuality and success. While living in Denmark, I took advantage of the free, state-run Danish language classes. During one of these, my teacher explained that there are two sides of the same coin when it comes to Janteloven. While on one hand it is positive that nobody tries to feel better than others, on the other hand it draws people to never be fully happy about their achievements (maybe this was her personal opinion, but to be honest it makes perfect sense to me). So, taking it back to the Danish dress code, it is easy to understand group-belonging dynamics within the country.

A Hidden Gem

The Law of Jante is also what has led a Financial Times columnist to describe Denmark as “boring”, however classifying it as the world’s top nation for economic perspectives.

However, Denmark should be one of your next travel destinations. For many of its aspects, it is one of Europe’s hidden gems. It remains quite tourist-free (if compared to London, Paris and Rome) and Copenhagen, its capital, is an incredible dynamic, green and young city.

Is this good news or bad news for Alzheimers and HBP? - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/high-blood-pressure-now-may-mean-lower-risk-of-alzheimers-later-suggests-study-233/

A new study suggests there may be a link between individuals with high blood pressure and a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. However, the researchers have not ruled out whether it is high blood pressure itself or if anti-hypertension medication reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s.

Study Researches Link Between High Blood Pressure and Alzheimer’s

Researchers from the University of Cambridge, University of Washington, and Brigham Young University have published a new study regarding the link between individuals with high blood pressure and their risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease later in life.

The study, published in the journal PLOS Medicine earlier this month, used data from 17,008 individuals with Alzheimer’s and compared it to 37,154 people without Alzheimer’s. Though the team investigated several health conditions ranging from diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity, only high blood pressure presented a significant association with disease development.

Robert Scott, the study’s lead investigator scientist from Cambridge, said the research used Mendelian randomisatio to determine if there was a link between health conditions earlier in life and development of Alzheimer’s.

High Blood Pressure Now May Mean Lower Risk of Alzheimer

Does High Blood Pressure or Medication Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer’s?

Though a connection between higher systolic blood pressure and lower risk of Alzheimer’s surfaced, the study authors are hesitant to say whether high blood pressure itself is the cause for the reduced risk. It is more likely that the anti-hypertension medication used to control high blood pressure is the primary factor.

Whether its the condition or the medication used as treatment, lead researchers and co-authors have theorized that something concerning high blood pressure probably plays a role in reducing Alzheimer’s risk.

Can High Blood Pressure Medication Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease?

Co-author of the study John Kauwe believes investigating the medications for future use in Alzheimer’s prevention could be extremely useful. The associate biology professor at Brigham Young University also pointed out the drugs already have FDA approval, which can take years to obtain with newer drugs.

The next step may be using the medication specifically in the management or prevention of Alzheimer’s. Though it may take even more research and studies to determine what the causal relationship means, the researchers remain hopeful.

The published paper is now the lead authority in researching the link between the disease and modifiable health conditions, most notably blood pressure.

With additional research, the connection between high blood pressure and the debilitating form of dementia can be established, which can potentially lead to an improved quality of life for the millions of individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

"Why not make your career the first for us to see in space?" - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/3-careers-that-would-be-awesome-to-see-in-space/

Michael Najjar, a professional photographer, plans on becoming the first civilian artist in space. Since 2012, Najjar has been training, in hopes of flying on Virgin Galatic’s maiden voyage later this year. During his space astronaut training, Najjar is documenting every moment. Even though he experienced temporary loss of color vision and almost blacked out during a stratospheric flight at twice the speed of sound, he was not deterred from his goal. If anything, he learned from the experience. He learned that it is difficult to control your movements, let alone focus the camera for a decent picture. If Najjar makes it to space, the event will open up more opportunities for other civilians to travel to space for career development. Here are three careers that would be awesome to see in space:

1. Dancer

Can you picture the Nutcracker being performed in space? Or imagine Step Up (the first one, not the ridiculous sequels) taking place in space. Cool right? It would be hard for the dancers to get used to the lack of gravity and there is also a strong possibility that the dancers my vomit on the first go around. But I think they could make it work. It would give the performance a different aesthetic. This career would be awesome to see in space because it would definitely break down barriers in the art world and open up minds to more possibilities.

2. Football Player

I know football fans are really hardcore and don’t like sudden changes in their team or their sport, but football in space would be hilarious. Big guys trying really hard to run faster and throw further, when gravity is working against them. I’m sure that eventually they would have to change the rules and the players would become accustomed to the changes in the environment, but I think football would be great to see in space for pure shits and giggles.

3. Porn Star

Funding is already in progress for Pornhub to film the first porn in space. If this occurs, it will open up doors for porn stars to explore more bizarre places to shoot scenes. And I have to admit, porn in space would be interesting to watch. You know you would want to see it too. We’ll just agree that it’s for academic purposes only. Wink, wink.

I hope Najjar accomplishes his goal, but not just for his benefit, but for the benefit of society. Us, as humans, thrive on knowledge and discovery. People will realize that they can truly accomplish anything they put their minds to. Who knows what would be next after Najjar becomes the first civilian artist in space. Why not make your career the first for us to see in space?

Its been too long since a new Pokemon game. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/pokemon-releases-free-game-for-mobile-ios-and-android-users-234/

In the original Red or Blue version you caught all 151, and since then Nintendo has added 570 additional Pokémon to be caught, exclusively on Nintendo devices. Fans of the Pokémon franchise have been wondering for years when Pokémon would be available on something other than a Nintendo device, and Nintendo has finally conceded now nearly 20 years after its creation. Pokémon will finally be available on your mobile IOS and Android powered devices for free in the form of a game called “Pokémon shuffle.”

Pokémon after twenty years

In 2016 Pokémon will celebrate its 20th birthday. It’s hard to believe that the popular multi-media franchise has been around for twenty years, but it’s even harder to believe that since its creation, this is first Pokémon related game that will be available for mobile download on smart phones and other devices. The demand for a mobile Pokémon game has never decreased since the creation of the franchise, and the franchise is the second highest grossing after only the Mario franchise. Perhaps it’s the overwhelming success and the upcoming anniversary that has Nintendo a little more willing to share.

What can Pokémon fans expect from this new game?

A gameplay trailer was released showing the Pokémon shuffle puzzle-like game. The official website describes the game, “Pokémon Shuffle Mobile is a new mobile game where players will battle wild Pokémon with their wits and puzzle-solving skills. By matching three or more Pokémon, players can deal damage and whittle down their opponents. Fans can even battle through difficult stages by utilizing Mega-Evolved Pokémon.” The free version of the Pokémon games offers fans the opportunity to battle with some of their favorite of the original 151, as well as the many more of the newer generations. Generously they are releasing the game completely free of charge, but it’s not like the need to publicity. In 2014 alone the Pokémon franchise generated $2 billion in revenue.

This new game may not be the mobile version of the first Pokémon red and blue Gameboy games, but for Nintendo it’s a step in the right direction towards making their franchise more accessible on mobile devices.

These fishes are losing their natural abilities to function. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/pink-salmon-at-great-risk-due-to-acidification-in-the-water-233/

Navigating the World’s oceans is a difficult task, finding a small place where you were born two years earlier without any navigational tools at all is impossible for most. Pink salmon are an incredible species capable of this and so much more, but now they are faced with their greatest challenge to date. Pink salmon must somehow survive the changing chemistry due to climate change, that is altering their environment, and posing the greatest risk the species will likely ever face.

A disruption in overall function

While it is not entirely known how salmon manage to navigate treacherous waters to return to the place they are born, research shows that changes in the water have affected the way they perceive the world around them, and could greatly impact the way that salmon migrate. Researchers at The University of British Columbia are among the first to identify the areas of concern for the future of salmon in a changing environment, “These data indicate that future populations of pink salmon may be at risk without mitigation and highlight the need for further studies on the impact of CO2-induced acidification on freshwater systems.”

Pink Salmon at Great Risk Due to Acidification in the Water - Clapway

There’s something in the water

Acidification in bodies of water is caused by an increase in CO2 emissions on land, which in turns affects the ocean which absorbs a quarter of the CO2 that we produce on earth every year according to NOAA. Scientists are coming to terms with the ways that the species they study are being impacted by climate change every day, and playing the part of both researcher and conservationist to ensure the longevity of their research.

Colin Brauner of The University of British Columbia comments on the impact the change in water could have on the lives of the fish, “We found that freshwater acidification affects pink salmon and may impact their ability to survive and ultimately return to their freshwater spawning grounds.” If the salmon are unable to return to the place they spawn, they may be hesitant to spawn at all, or spawn in a place that is vulnerable to attack from predators. Salmon are a part of the freshwater ecosystem which faces unknown peril if CO2 emissions are not reduced, and acidification levels in the water continue to rise.

This spiky fossil isn"t spiky without reason. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/30/scary-spiky-fossil-discovered-in-china-is-new-species-collinsium-ciliosum-234/

A scary, spiky fossil of Collinsium ciliosum has been discovered by paleontologists in China. The now-extinct half-a-billion year old bizarre creature is believed to be one of the first animals to have developed armor for self-defense.

Spiky Fossil Found in China Reveals New Species Collinsium ciliosum

Collinsium ciliosum is the newest species of armored worms after researchers discovered the half-a-billion year old spiky fossil in southern China. The bizarre creature was almost entirely covered in spikes and is believed to be one of the first animals to evolve such heavy armor for self-defense against predators.

The study also showed that the creepy, spike-covered creature had developed an intriguing digestive system. Using its feather-like front legs, the ancient, sedentary worm filtered seawater to absorb nutrition. This specialized feeding system was also first of its kind according to the paleontologists.

Researchers from Cambridge University and Yunnan University made the discovery in the Xiaoshiba deposit in southern China. The study was published today in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

Spiky Fossil is Hallucigenia’s Scarier Monster Cousin on Steroids

The Collinsium ciliosum fossil found is around 500-million-years old, but it’s not the first discovery of the creature. In the 1980s, paleontologist Desmond Collins discovered and illustrated a similar fossil. Paying homage to Collins’ discovery, the researchers also call the creature the Hairy Collins’ Monster.

According to the study, the spiky, super-armored worm roamed during the Cambrian explosion, a time period that witnessed the birth of many major animals.

The Collins’ Monster is perhaps the earliest ancestor of modern velvet worms that presently reside in tropical forests all over the world. The researchers noted that the Cambrian ancestors have a much wider diversity than today’s velvet worms. Though observed in other fossils, this particular evolution pattern–diverse ancestors that led to unvaried descendants–was the first ever seen in soft-bodied animals.

Interestingly, somewhere in the line of descendants is Hallucigenia, another Cambrian worm that has been well-studied and has recently made headlines.

Both are lobopodians (legged worms), but researchers have said the Monster was “like Hallucigenia on steroids” with its heavier armor of five spines per leg. Hallucigenia had a measly 2 spines in comparison. Also, the Collins’ Monster had most likely adapted the heavy armor as a result of its sedentary lifestyle due to its specialized filter feeding system.

So what did the super scary, spiky monster look like?

Dr Javier Ortega-Hernández of Cambridge’s Department of Earth Sciences and his colleagues painted quite a remarkable picture from the well-preserved fossil. The fossil is so detailed, the researchers could identify the entire body’s organization, from its sharp spikes to the hair-like filtering structures on its legs.

Picture this: a soft, squishy body with six pairs of feather-like legs in the front and nine pairs of clawed legs at the back. Because this small creature was sedentary, it was only out of necessity that the 72 sharp spikes evolved. With the pointed prongs covering its entire body, it became the earliest soft-bodied adopters of armor as a self-defense mechanism.

Though the scary creature had adapted self-defense, it did not survive long enough to have any direct descendants left today.

As Ortega-Hernandez noted, these fossils are not only sparse, but to find one in such great condition was a truly rare and amazing find. The spiky fossil may seem like it has come out of a nightmare, but it’s a dream come true for paleontologists interested in understanding more about evolutionary patterns.

"The problem lays in national crime indicators not looking at the big picture," Finkelhor said. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/study-finds-over-one-third-of-us-children-and-teen-abused-assaulted-123/

Nearly four of every 10 US children and teens have been exposed to violence or abuse over the previous year, a new research unveiled. Researchers collected information on 4,000 US children age 17 and younger through phone interviews over the last two years. The results of the survey are shocking.

Children: the most victimized section of the population

According to the Crimes Against Children Research Center at the University of New Hampshire, just over 37% of kids in the study had been physically assaulted over the previous year, usually by siblings or peers. Almost 10 percent were consequently injured.

Furthermore, approximately 15 percent of US children faced mistreated by the hands of a caregiver or parent, including 5 percent who were physically abused.

According to study leader David Finkelhor, “children are the most victimized segment of the population”. So why is everyone missing the full burden of this? According to Finkelhor, “The problem lays in national crime indicators not looking at the big picture.”

US children physically assaulted and sexually abused

Overall, boys were assaulted by adults and peers about twice as often as girls were. The survey also found that 2 percent of girls overall had been sexually abused or assaulted within the year, those aged 14 to 17, in particular.

The findings published online in the journal JAMA Pediatrics were the result of children aged 10 to 17 being questioned about their exposure to violence, crime and abuse. Caregivers answered questions for children aged 9 and younger.

Going beyond the statistics

Experts believe that violence and abuse in childhood are big drivers behind many of the social and health issues we face today, ranging from suicide to crime.

According to Dr. Andrew Adesman, of the Cohen Children’s Medical Center of New York, these statistics should be a wake up call for public health experts and policy makers to ensure that children and adolescents are neither exposed to — nor the victim of — so many different forms of violence.

Various programs can help prevent abuse. These include parent education and psychological support programs, that can prevent family abuse as well as school-based ones to reduce bullying.

Study Finds Over One Third of US Children and Teen Abused, Assaulted

“You never 100% know if your attempts to create will be successful, or will amount to anything, but you can’t let that deter you. Success flows when you throw yourself in and have a go – mistakes and all!” - Emma Isaacs - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/unity-is-strength-women-online-network-business-chicks-goes-global-234/

Business Chicks, an innovative women’s networking group from Australia is launching its services in the US in July, creating a platform for business-minded women, from Wall Street to self-starters, to share ideas.

Business Chicks, founded by entrepreneur Emma Isaacs, 35, is currently the largest social network for women in Down Under.

“Together, we learn, grow, challenge and kick ass,” the company says. “We’re a tribe of explorers and a band of big thinkers. And we believe that together, we can shine even more brightly than we do as individuals”.

It started with only 250 members but it’s now at almost 38,000 – women and men – spread across the globe. Business Chicks has set up offices in New York and will start a series of launching events all across the US with celebrities and entrepreneurs such as Rachel Zoe in the ‘Big Apple’ and Arianna Huffington in Los Angeles.

So what exactly is Business Chicks?

Basically, Business Chicks brings “like-minded souls together”, in order to swap ideas, share stories, and spark inspiration.

The company hosts hundreds of successful events every year, allowing its members to “rub shoulders” with all sorts of celebrities and characters, from Sir Richard Branson to Diane von Furstenberg and Bobbi Brown. To inspire its members, original daily content is posted on the Business Chick’s website, allowing entrepreneurs to learn and share the “tricks of the trade”.

Isaacs, who started her first job staffing agency aged only 18, has business running through her veins. She was a finalist in last year’s Telstra Business Women’s Awards in the Young Business Woman category.

Business Chick goes Global

Business Chicks is now about to go global with the 35-year-old next month launching her company into the productive US market, while eyeing Asia and Europe as well.

“You never 100% know if your attempts to create will be successful, or will amount to anything, but you can’t let that deter you. Success flows when you throw yourself in and have a go – mistakes and all!” Isaacs was quoted saying by Naomi Simson, Influencer and Founding Director of RedBalloon.

Over the years, Business Chicks has worked on initiatives such as the ‘Immersion and Leadership Project’ where Isaacs went to Uganda with a group of members to empower women.

Women and the Labor Market

According to the UN, women continue to participate in labour markets on an unequal basis with men. Women in most countries earn on average only 60 to 75 per cent of men’s wages. It is calculated that women could increase their income globally by up to 76 per cent if the employment participation gap and the wage gap between women and men were closed. This is calculated to have a global value of USD 17 trillion.

Business Chicks, is not just a sort of “sisterhood”; it has the capacity to inspire everyone to do something different. To succeed. And to be excited about it.

Why not, sugar babies? - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/3-reasons-why-you-should-get-a-sugar-daddy-at-least-short-term/

According to Urban Dictionary, a sugar daddy is like a genie–he may be a little old, but if a girl rubs his lamp, he’ll grant her wishes. Sugar daddies are everywhere and if you are having trouble finding one, go to SugarDaddyForMe.com.

In a recent study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, it has been proven that men use money to lure women into short-term relationships, or flings. Men seem to think that women are oblivious to their tactics but that is not the case.

Women know the game and they don’t care. They know that men with money are only looking for one thing, but that doesn’t mean that women are not going to try to create something long-term.

Guys with money send the signal that they can provide for a family, by driving around in expensive cars and purchasing extravagant gifts. In a study conducted with Match.com, researchers found that a third of respondents reported having a one-night stand that turned into a long-term relationship. Women were able to turn these players into one woman men. But if you are not into long-term relationships right now, there a number of benefits to dating a guy with money. Here are three reasons (besides money) why you should get a short-term sugar daddy:

1. He Gives Good Advice

Sugar daddies are usually a lot older than you, which means they have experienced more of life. Something you may be going through at your entry level job, he may have experienced numerous times 10 years ago. Your sugar daddy can offer you great advice about your career, friends, and maybe point you in the right direction to an enlightening hobby. His wealth of knowledge may turn out to be more beneficial than his fat wallet.

2. He Knows People

Connections, connections, connections. Your sugar daddy knows plenty of high ranking people. He can introduce you to that one person who can take your career to the next level. Don’t hesitate to meet his friends because his friends can become your friends.

3. You Could Fall in Love

You may not have planned on it but you could fall in love. You knew he was using his money to draw you in but you didn’t care. You were using him, just like he was using you. But somehow, you both form a deep connection and you can’t think of a future without one another. You come to the realization that your sugar daddy may be the one, which isn’t so bad. He can provide for you in ways that a guy in a Corolla can’t.

Whether your a guy or a girl, get yourself a sugar daddy (or sugar mama). They may think they’re controlling you but you are the one tugging at the puppet strings. Get what you want, then ditch him. Don’t feel bad about it either because that is what he would have done. Play the game and play it better.

Animal tracking and the information we receive from it is crucial to our environment and us. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/how-animal-tracking-has-improved-our-knowledge-of-species-and-the-environment/

Scientists have always attempted to follow animals and track them in their natural environment. In the past, these efforts were limited for various reasons. We are in an age, now, where we know so much more about life on Earth (and even off Earth). It’s astonishing to look back and be able to see the advancements we’ve made in our understanding of the way our ecosystem is working.

We have made these strides by tracking animals in their natural habitats. Doing so, we are able to see how and where they live, what they eat, and how they react to intruders and dangerous situations. According to the authors of a research article in Science Magazine, animal tracking and the information we receive from it is crucial to our environment and us. Behold, the awesome strides made possibly by animal tracking technologies…

northatlanticrightwhales

Out With The Old, In With The New!

Scientists have used VHF radio technology in the past to track animals. This traditional form of tracking has previously given us a decent amount of information on animals and their whereabouts. Unfortunately, using radio technology has limited our ability to have a “big picture” view of the animal and its species. The main form of tracking that is being used today is by GPS transmitter. A satellite picks up the signal and transmits the information back to scientists where they record the data.

Killerwhales_jumping1

What We Can Learn With GPS Tracking

These new GPS trackers can observe a larger array of animals at once and also several different facts about the animals fitted with the transmitters. Specifically, we can learn physiological details and even monitor brain waves. This type of tracking gives us a more complete and accurate picture of the animal and its patterns. With this system, we can also track their energy levels, health condition, interaction with other animals, and real-time whereabouts.

According to the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute’s research associates, because of this new equipment, we are in a golden age of animal tracking and gaining knowledge about the environment. According to the Science Magazine article, written by Roland Kays, Margaret Crofoot and Martin Wikelsk, “The unique perspective offered by big-data animal tracking enables a new view of animals as naturally evolved sensors of environment, which we think has the potential to help us monitor the planet in completely new ways.”

Elephants_at_Amboseli_national_park_against_Mount_Kilimanjaro

Understanding each of these elements of the animal and its lifestyle is vital for biodiversity and ecology research. I think research of this magnitude could potentially assist us in preventing the destruction of smaller ecosystems and aid in our understanding of what is happening on our planet.

Tactile holograms. How unreal is that? - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/japan-scientists-have-created-a-holographic-image-that-can-be-touched-234/

Scientists have taken a technology which once was only dreamed about in science fiction, and taken it further than anyone could ever have imagined. Experts in Japan have created 3D holographic technology that not only projects an image, it allows a viewer to interact with what is projected before them.

Whether it was the first appearance in Jules Verne’s “The Carpathian Castle”, later in George Lucas’ “Star Wars”, or even James Cameron’s “Avatar”, Holographic images have always captivated daydreamers and scientists alike.

Engineering behind holograms that react to physical touch

Researchers from various universities in Japan have used what they describe as a safer alternative laser called a “femtosecond” to facilitate this invention. Femtosecond lasers use pulses of light that are emitted at a rate so fast that they are not harmful, it would otherwise burn skin with human contact if not for its special design, “a high-intensity laser excites a physical matter to emit light at an arbitrary 3D position. Popular applications can then be explored especially since plasma induced by a femtosecond laser is safer than that generated by a nanosecond laser.”

The femtosecond laser sounds rather miraculous, but it is has been applied for years in other facets of the modern world. The femtosecond laser uses ultra-short pulses of electromagnetic light and has been used for applications in the study of chemistry, medical imaging technology, and has been used in cataract eye surgery since 2001.

Japan- Scientists Have Created a Holographic Image that Can Be Touched - Clapway

So they’ve built a hologram that users can touch, now what?

Development doesn’t stop for the researchers at just creating the holographic technology. In their publication describing the details of their research, they discuss future practical applications of their advanced piece of engineering, “We envision a laser-induced plasma technology in general applications for public use, If laser-induced plasma aerial images were made available, many useful applications such as augmented reality (AR), aerial user interfaces, volumetric images could be produced. This would be a highly effective display for the expression of three-dimensional information.”

Research has led the team to believe that the public will benefit tremendously from the future 3D representations rendered using the laser imaging technology. Holographic images have been around for years now in the real world, but now science has taken a step beyond what imagination thought possible and created holograms that can be touched by human hands.

How social media saves lives: The democratization of information. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/could-twitter-have-saved-rwandan-lives/

Twitter plays the hero; Would it be crazy to say that if the Rwandan genocide happened today, lives might have been saved? Interviews and studies published in the last months suggest that the bloodshed of the 1994 slaughter, which killed up to 1 million people, might have been drastically reduced if the spread of social media happened merely one decade before.

Pictures showing the west exactly the harshness of the situation, would have put such a strong pressure on policy makers, that the UN would have never decided to withdraw its soldiers and politicians would have done whatever possible to gain more consensus.

Quite interestingly (and what led me to look into this topic more in depth) British former prime minister Gordon Brown, in a special interview to British leading newspaper The Guardian, went as far as stating that given the current spread of social media platforms “You cannot have Rwanda anymore”.

In the same field, a Canadian professor called Walter Dorn expressed a similar position on the matter, emphasising that “It is much more likely that the genocide could have been prevented, had there been social media at the time”.

Thinking of that terrible event in such ways it is hard to have a clear position, especially because re-imagining the course of historical events under different circumstances often turns out to be quite misleading.

In the case of Rwanda in particular, it is quite complicated to follow this path as politicians and the UN knew exactly what was going on and did not take the correct measures to save lives. Actually, the UN purposely withdrew its Blue Berets from Rwanda and the reasons behind this decision are still not clear.

The ongoing “internet revolution” is definitely more tumultuous than any previous social uprising. Social media websites have empowered individuals from all over the world to report breaking news, share stories and gather support for a cause.
Social media platforms allow any individual to become a reporter by letting the world know what is happening in a certain place at a given time.

Something all of us are aware of, is that technological advancements have been a major feature of recent years, thanks to the spread and development of social media tools like Twitter around the world and the massive growth of mobile phone and smartphone usage. Social media usage has inevitably had effects on political foreign policy choices and in reporting faraway disasters.

These advances have brought a “democratisation of information”, meaning that specific areas of political competence are no longer the province of just a few elites. But how does this occur?

Foreign policy shaped by public opinion

Visual material such as videos and photos always help deliver a clear understanding of the gravity of the events. When thinking about the impact of social media in reporting faraway disasters, we should think about its ability to shape public opinion in a way that the political class feels forced to act. Gordon Brown himself said that “information would come out more quickly about what is actually going on and the public opinion would row to the point where action would need to be taken”.

We can associate therefore the so-called Twitter Revolution to the CNN-Effect of the 1990s. This refers to the influence of then-new 24h broadcast service on International Politics, which largely shaped public opinion and drove foreign policy in specific directions.

Kenya’s successful technology

When talking about this “social media revolution”, think of the recent Arab Spring, which started in Tunisia in 2011 and had strong domino effect throughout other North African countries also thanks to videos and pictures of protests spread through social media. The tole of social media was Important in allowing young protesters from different backgrounds to come together to fight for a common cause, and for those affected by the violence to spread videos and images all over the web in order to stimulate political action from developed countries.

In fact, the moment in which pictures showing thousands of children and families killed by chemical weapons in Syria in 2013 spread all over the web, generated massive discussions in the developed west which turned into immediate political debate on whether humanitarian intervention was necessary or not.

NGOs in line with digital developments

It is interesting also to look at the role of NGOs in the effectiveness of social media of reaching a wide number of people from across the world. The idea that they can create impact through the use of social media platforms by gathering support and aid has in fact led many organisations to increase the use of Facebook and Twitter among their information tools.

Annelie Abildgaard, head of communications at IBIS, one of Denmark’s leading development NGOs with programmes in different countries, emphasised how the use of social media by NGOs in Denmark is growing, by creating platforms for participating debates.

Referring to the potential of social media to shape public opinion and force the political elite to take action, Abildgaard emphasised how “creating awareness is crucial, by informing people and making them understand that they can act in a way that pushes the pressure on the political class to change and end poverty”.

“What I really like about social media” she added “is that it is way less elitist than radio and television as it holds a great democratic position. With social media, you don’t have to be someone to have a voice”.

Could Twitter Have Saved Rwandan Lives?

These are definitely things worthy of rejoice thanks to June 26th historical decision! - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/3-benefits-of-making-same-sex-marriage-just-marriage/

It’s official! On Friday, June 26, same-sex marriage became just marriage. It was legalized in all 50 states and we all became witnesses to this moment in history. This is something we will be able to tell our grandchildren one day: “I was standing right outside the Supreme Court when they announced that me and your grandfather could get married anywhere in the country.” Although it was a 5–4 decision and I would have preferred it be unanimous, progress is progress. Majority rules! I love democracy. There are a number of benefits of making same-sex marriage just marriage and here are three you should now:

1. Better Weddings

It is no secret that gays are more stylish, fashion forward, and more creative than the rest of the population. Don’t deny it, it’s true. Accept it and move on. Our innate creativity allows us to throw the best parties and events. And if you’re invited to a gay wedding, definitely get ready for the time of your life.

2. More Adoptions, Happier Kids

Adoptions are easier for couples that are married. Hopefully, more same-sex couples will start to adopt more children in need. When these children are adopted, they will be the happiest children on the planet. Same-sex couples understand diversity and practice acceptance, allowing children to be true to themselves. Adopted children of same-sex couples will also never have to want for anything. Gay couples plan for children. They make sure that their finances are intake and that they have enough time to take on the responsibility. Unlike parents who have children because they forget to take the pill, gay parents prepare their lives for a new member of the family.

3. Focus On a New Cause

Now that we have conquered same-sex marriage, it is time to move on to a new cause. There are so many problems and issues out in the world that need our attention. Let’s all put our focus on to making history and bringing big changes to our world in a new way.

Although, I only listed three benefits of making same-sex marriage legal, there are plenty more out there. I’m sure if you pay close attention you will start to see our society developing a better well-being. Not to mention that this will boost our economy with the increase in the amount of weddings and honeymoons. Same-sex marriage is now just marriage. No matter your sexual orientation, remember that Friday, June 26, was a win.

Education introduces HIV and aims to prevent it in their futures. - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/study-discerns-secondary-education-can-close-the-hiv-gap-234/

Longer secondary schooling reduces the risk of contracting HIV, particularly for girls. Harvard researchers found this trend after a study in Botswana.

According to the research an estimated 2.1 million individuals are newly infected with HIV every year. Education is known to be closely associated with health, but whether or not it actually protects against HIV infection has been a debated topic for decades.

ASSOCIATION BETWEEN EDUCATION AND HIV RISK

The research used a policy reform in secondary schooling in Botswana as a ‘natural experiment’ to determine a casual effect for education on HIV incidence.

Botswana has one of the highest rates of HIV in the world, with nearly a quarter of the population aged 15 and above infected, according to Avert.

For each additional year of secondary school (grades 8-12), students appeared to decrease cumulative their risk of HIV infection. Individuals with an extra year of secondary schooling were 8% less likely to test positive for HIV about a decade later, when most of those exposed to the education system reform were in their mid 20s. Effects of education on the spread of the virus were particularly significant in women, whose HIV risk dropped by 12% with each added year of secondary school.

EDUCATION A COST-EFFECTIVE PREVENTIVE MEASURE

The first author of the study, Jan-Walter De Neve said the findings confirm that secondary schooling is a crucial structural determinant of HIV infection. Researchers also believe that education could actually be a cost-effective way to prevent HIV infections.

“Expanding the opportunities of young people through secondary schooling will not only have economic benefits but will also yield health benefits and should be a key priority for countries with generalised HIV epidemics.”

HIV IN BOTSWANA

Researchers examined data from about 7,000 people who participated in the Botswana AIDS Impact Surveys-national household surveys. The survey included HIV-testing to people who were at least 18 years old at the time of the surveys.

The study, published online in The Lancet Global Health, suggests that schooling should be considered alongside other interventions a part of a “multi-pronged ‘combination’ HIV prevention strategy.”

GUINNESS WORLD RECORD – CLOSING THE HIV GAP

Recently a HIV testing and counseling campaign in Botswana, South Africa and United Republic of Tanzania has set a new Guinness World Record by testing 4367 people over an 8-hour period.

“This is a true testament of the coordination and mobilization of local resources to achieve a magnificent result within such a short period of time. We hope to do more in actively involving civil society organizations and the community to achieve greater outcomes,” said Grace Muzila, National Coordinator of the Botswana National AIDS Coordinating Agency.

Keisha Eldred Mushi, one of the participants said that he decided to get tested so that he could be aware of his HIV status. “I have big dreams that I would like to achieve in life like everybody else and I want to stay healthy and prevent myself from HIV infection.’’

What do you think about the Facebook Messenger app? - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/facebook-messenger-and-whatsapp-same-same-but-different-234/

Facebook is now allowing anyone to use Messenger, even if they’re not a part of the 1.44 billion users social network. This is Facebook’s latest step in making the messaging app an independent and self-sustaining product.

MESSENGER NOW JUST LIKE WHATSAPP

Just like for WhatsApp, to sign up to Messenger without a Facebook account, a name, phone number and a photo will be enough. Facebook wrote on the news section of its website that with Messenger, they’ve been dedicated to creating the best messaging experience possible for users.

With this update, more people will be able to enjoy the innumerable features available on the app, regardless of their social media preferences. The option, however, is currently available only in Canada, the United States, Venezuela and Peru.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Now, on Messenger’s initial screen, users will find a “Not on Facebook?” option. Subsequently, one can sign up, without necessarily being a member of the social network. The app will create a friend list based on phone book contacts for users to share photos, videos, enjoy group chats, and make voice and video calls with their network of friends.

COMPETITION ON THE RISE

Facebook already owns photo-sharing app Instagram and messaging app, WhatsApp which has now increasingly similar features to Messenger, such as sending photos, stickers and videos, group chats, voice and video calling.

But the competition is getting fierce. Facebook Messenger must increasingly play the game with other popular messaging services such as WeChat and SnapChat.

Consequently, the company wants to turn Messenger into one of its most vibrant and dynamic components.

The recent strategic move to make Messenger accessible to virtually everyone will help Facebook to make the app available to all new kind of users who will join a ‘global army’ of 700 million people who already use the chat service.

Facebook recently opened its Messenger doors to developers, as well as businesses, allowing them to use the app to handle customers. The company also unveiled a number of new features and objectives for its different apps at its annual meeting. Guess what? The spotlight is increasingly on Messenger.

Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp "Same Same but Different"

Don"t be a doomsayer about dooms day. We"re already making it! - http://clapway.com/2015/06/29/the-myth-of-the-sixth-mass-extinction-how-fear-draws-attention-from-conservation-234/

While a study published last week about the sixth mass extinction is still spreading across the internet, scientists and conservationists are urging the public to redirect their efforts from the study’s fear-mongering media hype towards a more productive focus on active conservation changes.

Is The Sixth Mass Extinction a Myth?

As social media continues to fan the flames of our impending self-destruction in the “sixth mass extinction,” the much-sensationalized study is drawing criticism from the scientific community. The study was co-published in Science Advances by Gerardo Ceballos and Paul Ehrlich.

Ehrlich’s credentials should not be discredited as he is well-known in the scientific community. However, he has also been dubbed the Doomsday Prophet Professors by some for his incredulous cataclysmic warnings of certain doom, all of which have been, so far, false.

The new study concludes that with current estimates, there has been “an exceptionally rapid loss of biodiversity” that proves the sixth mass extinction isn’t just coming, it’s already upon us.

Study Findings and Dissent from the Scientific Community

While the study isn’t inaccurate, scientists and researchers want the public to know there is a sixth mass extinction underway. However, this event, called the Holocene extinction has been happening for the past 12,000 years. Yes, we are in the sixth mass extinction. Yes, many thousands of species have been eliminated (between 20,000 to over hundreds of thousands). But no, it’s not the time to give up all hope and accept the cruel fate we have thrown upon ourselves.

The study pins humans as the primary cause for the extinction with the researchers estimating that the extinction count is at 477 species over the last 10,000 years. Ehrlich says this rate of species extinction is the highest ever in 65 million years.

Some researchers dissent from this finding, including mass extinction expert Seth Finnegan.

“This study doesn’t take the inferential approach. They are tallying up well-documented, well-observed extinctions of mammals,” says Finnegan, assistant professor in the integrative biology department at UC Berkeley.

Don’t Lose Hope! Alleviating the Sixth Mass Extinction Damage through Conservation Efforts

Many news sources have cited the study as evidence that we currently in the sixth mass extinction, which has started and is being increasingly exacerbated by human existence. With thousands of species being threatened within these reports of mass extinction, the public response has been one of generalized fear and hopelessness, which is precisely the opposite of what scientists are urging us to do with this recently highlighted information.

The study also concluded that it “is still possible through intensified conservation efforts” to slow down the rate at which the extinction is moving. Rather than rely on the fatalistic terms of Erhlich, who insisted we are “sawing off the limbs that we are sitting on,” we can apply the knowledge gleaned from the study to focus on how we can improve our situation as recommended by a world leader in present-day extinctions.

Dr. Stuart L. Pimm suggests that conservationists should not be doomsayers, but instead should spend time using the very innovations that garnered the fear-mongering results to prevent extinctions. In a study published last year, Pimm offers a different view of the current mass extinction that focuses on protecting nature and providing suggestions to diminish its effects.

Rather than accept our doomed fate as one of extinction, with concentrated, real conservation efforts, we can alleviate the effects of the sixth mass extinction, bringing hope to the world rather than casting a dim shadow on our lives.
