Something we already knew was important has further proven itself invaluable to human existence – water. According to a previous study completed at Boston College, two-thirds of Americans do not drink nearly enough water each day. This is a frightening statistic as two to three quarts of water can be used by the body everyday for a variety of purposes, from body temperature regulation to nutrient metabolism, and joint, organ and tissue cushioning, states Sheila Tucker, the Administrative Dietitian of Boston College Dining. According to a new study lead by Helen Parretti, a lecturer at the University of Birmingham, water is also an efficient source to prevent excess weight gain and help with weight loss.

Published in the September issue of the journal, Obesity, the experiment included 84 obese participants. Each person was given specific directions for the amount of water they should consume each day; participants were randomly split into one of two groups, where they had to either: 1) drink 500 ml of water 30 min before their main meals (intervention group [41]) or 2) visualize being full before having their meals (control group [43]).

The study began with 30 minute face-to-face weight management consultations for each participant, followed by a 10 minute follow-up telephone consultations after 2 weeks. “At 12-weeks, participants who ‘preloaded’ with water reduced their body weight by 1.3 kg more than participants in the control group,” said Peter Janiszewski, Ph.D. According to an article posted on the Daily Mail, participants also lost 9.48lbs (4.3kg) over the span of twelve weeks.

To ensure accurate result, the experiment was completed a second time in regards to characteristic differences such as ethnicity, age, and gender.

Weight Loss: 2 Cups a Day, Keep The Pounds Away

The results of this randomized study display similar correlations to prior epidemiological studies that prove “caloric intake in water drinkers is on average 200 calories less than among non-water drinkers,” according to Janiszewski. “The results provide compelling evidence to encourage all those attempting to lose weight to increase their daily intake of water to help in their efforts. Specifically, one should consume approximately 2 cups of water, about half an hour prior to most meals.”
