US Army veteran and Bronx native Christine Jorgensen was the first well-known public figure to undergo gender reassignment surgery in 1951. She used her influence as a public figurehead, along with her trademark charm and witticism to help advocate transgender acceptance across the nation.


2. Laverne Cox

Known best for her Emmy-winning performance in Netflix’s hit series “Orange is the New Black,” Laverne Cox is the first transgender woman to receive an Emmy Award. Since her rise to stardom, she has become a major advocate for the LGBT community.


3. Kye Allums

In 2010, Kye Allums became an NCAA Division 1 Athlete for George Washington University, making him the first openly transgender college athlete in the division.


4. Isis King

Isis King is the first transgender model to compete on America’s Next Top Model. She earned 10th place in the competition, out of thousands of contestants.


5. Reneé Richards

In 1976, tennis champion Reneé Richards was denied entry into the US to compete, after having undergone gender reassignment surgery just one year prior. Richards took the case all the way to the Supreme Court, eventually winning the right to compete openly as a woman, becoming a hero for transgender people worldwide.
