Ever wonder why our #colorful world looks different to you out there? #ColorPerception could be off on you... - http://clapway.com/2015/08/06/humans-color-perception-changes-seasonally-325/

Color perception is such an interesting thing. Art thrives off it, and it’s true that you can never really trust your eyes because visual perception is limited. In school, did your teachers every show you that picture of the young woman with her head turned? It’s a perfect example of what we are talking about here. It’s safe to say that many of us are aware that as humans, we all perceive things differently, whether it’s by a slight difference or on a grander scale. Now, researchers are beginning to understand more about the human ability to process colors and light. They have recently discovered that humans color perception changes seasonally.

The Shades of Summer

Seasons are dominated by colors, as we well know, that can be seen naturally and all over seasonal décor. We often associate bright blue and yellow with summer, forest green or orange with fall, and white, green, and red with winter. However, researchers at the University of York claim that our perception of color changes with each passing season.

The study started out with researchers attempting to find out how individuals perceive the color yellow between the changing seasons, however, they discovered more than they anticipated. According to the Apex Tribune, scientists said that people can identify four colors – red, blue, green, and yellow – and their blends. Although each color in this group is unique, they still gathered the most interesting information about the color yellow.

What Was Their Testing Method?

Live Mint explains the scientist’s method of testing, saying that they had 67 male and female participants in January and June, and placed them in a darkened room. They were allowed to adjust only the light, and used a machine called a “colorimeter” where they were asked to adjust a dial forward and backward until they found what they thought to be a true color, without any hint of another.

People see different colors differently, varying in shade and hue, and frequently disagree what the “real” color is. However, participants in this study all agreed on what “real” yellow was. Researchers discovered that what participants identified as “real yellow” varied between summer and winter, making this the first study to focus on the proof that humans color perception changes seasonally. Lead author of the study, Lauren Welbourne, said that this was the first time we’ve seen a relationship in the natural changes in the environment and our perception.
